As if anyone doubted that the graphics card market was fickle with a short attention span, it almost seems as though NVIDIA is going out of its way to prove the point. Just as graphics cards based on the GeForceFX 5800 chipset (a.k.a. NV30) are finally making their way into the retail channel, NVIDIA is introducing its follow-up product. Following the company’s nomenclature, the new high-end chip will be called NVIDIA GeForceFX 5900 (NV35).

There are several compelling reasons behind this somewhat surprising step. The previous flagship, the FX 5800 Ultra, was plagued by several problems. Due to the high clockspeed of 500 MHz and the new 0.13 micron process, the yields for this chip were much lower than expected. The DDR-II memory it requires is expensive, not yet available in sufficient quantities and only supports a 128 bit bus, creating a memory bottleneck. On top of that, NVIDIA’s reference cooling solution proved to be unacceptably loud, earning the reference card the nickname «dustbuster.» Lastly, the chip’s image quality when using anisotropic filtering also didn’t live up to expectations and was criticized in many reviews. When ATi launched its Radeon 9800 PRO, it was able to beat NVIDIA’s flagship in practically every discipline. In short, the FX 5800/ NV30 is too loud, too expensive, offers sub-par image quality and is slower than its direct competitor, the Radeon 9800.

The GeForceFX 5900 Ultra looks completely different from its predecessor.

NVIDIA is aiming to remedy the situation with the new FX 5900 (NV35) series. Obviously, this is not a completely new design, but a lot of details have been changed and improved. For example, the memory bus has been widened from 128 to 256 bits, and the design no longer calls for DDR-II memory but uses conventional DDR modules instead. The chip’s core speed has been reduced from 500 MHz to 450 MHz to increase production yield. Many gamers and definitely all hardware testers will be relieved to know that the new cooling solution sounds a lot less like a vacuum cleaner and operates at a much more bearable volume. And lastly, a new driver is supposed to give the FX series a performance boost and improve image quality with FSAA and anisotropic filtering. There are a few other optimizations as well, which should help to counterbalance the reduction in clock speed. A new memory interface (IntelliSample HCT) improves the efficiency of 4:1 color compression by 50 percent, which should benefit FSAA performance. The CineFX Engine, now at version 2.0, has also been extended and offers a new technology called «UltraShadow.» Games that have been adapted to use this feature and use stencil calculations for shadows should see a tangible increase in rendering speed. To accommodate these additions and improvements, the chip itself had to grow and now consists of about 130 million transistors, a good 5 million more than the NV30.

NVIDIA made two poor bets a couple of years back that led to the lackluster
introduction of the GeForceFX 5800 (NV30).

The first mistake was one that has been widely covered — the decision to go
with a 0.13-micron manufacturing process. NVIDIA assumed that TSMC’s 0.13-micron
process would be much more mature than it was when NV30 was ready to go to production;
in the end, a 0.13-micron process that lacked maturity held the NV30 back many
more months than it needed to be.

The second mistake NVIDIA made with NV30 was in their assumption that flip
chip packaging technology would not be ready by the scheduled introduction of
the NV30. Without a flip chip package, NVIDIA did not think that a 256-bit memory
interface would be a viable option and thus chose to outfit the NV30 with a
128-bit memory interface.

Both of these mistakes combined with drivers that were still in their infancy
led to a very disappointing introduction of the GeForceFX. Not being the type
of company to just fade away, NVIDIA immediately shifted their focus to NV35
even before NV30 hit the shelves. The end result was everything the NV30 should
have been:

Just by looking at the table above you can see that NVIDIA was able to use
slower (and cheaper) memory with the NV35, as well as drop the core clock a
bit in comparison to the NV30. Will the architectural enhancements and 256-bit
memory bus be able to overcome these reductions? You better believe it and soon
you’ll find out exactly how. Also note that NVIDIA is planning on introducing
cheaper 128MB versions of the NV35 core in the next month.

Today we’re finally able to bring you all there is to know about NVIDIA’s latest
GPU and the new GeForceFX 5900 Ultra.

As if that weren’t enough, today we’ve got a special treat for you all as well.
You may have heard of a game called «Doom3» and later on in this review
you’ll see a total of 8 GPUs compared using a current build of the game.

Let’s get to it…

    NVIDIA’s return to Olympus — Ferra.ru

A long time ago, however, in our galaxy and even on our planet, NVIDIA became a leader among video chip manufacturers. It all started, perhaps, with the already forgotten Riva TNT. Soon a much more successful Riva TNT2 appeared with a bunch of variations on its theme. And since then everything has gone smoothly for the Californian company. The most serious competitor was crushed and subsequently absorbed. The consistently high quality and performance (for its level, of course) of each subsequent product made it possible to quickly acquire a huge number of not just buyers — supporters. Fans. This is already somewhat more even than the so-called brand loyalty.

Unexpectedly, a neighbor from Canada — ATI — previously noted only for interesting, but indecent because of its dampness products, releases a Radeon chip that made a splash. But, having retained the former zest in the form of crooked drivers, he did not become a serious competitor. However, the release of the next product — the Radeon 8500 — forced the Americans to take retaliatory steps. True, they limited themselves to a noticeable optimization of drivers, which brought NVIDIA’s flagship of that time, the GeForce3, out of harm’s way.

But last summer there was a serious failure. The competitor presented a very strong product — Radeon 9700 Pro. Only paper launches of the NV30 were able to answer this. Betting on the transition to a progressive 0.13 micron process technology and a new type of memory (DDR II), NVIDIA has painted itself into a corner. There were problems with the release of suitable products. Although there is another version of this delay — a serious deterioration in relations with the software giant Microsoft, which is in charge of the DirectX API. This seriously hampered the development of the NV30, which was required to support the new DX9..

Be that as it may, but at the beginning of this spring the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra became available for testing to a wide range of observers. It caused a very mixed reaction. On the one hand, high performance made it possible to overtake the Radeon 9700 Pro, and even then not by much. On the other hand, high operating frequencies did their dirty work, heating the video card to dangerous temperatures. To deal with this problem, a sophisticated cooling system was introduced, met with unequivocal public backlash due to excessive noise levels. All this predetermined both the place of the NV30, imperceptible on the market, and the imminent appearance of the NV35 on the arena.

    Architecture and technology

Unfortunately, NVIDIA is sticking to its policy of minimizing disclosures. As a matter of fact, there is nothing to tell about the architecture of the chip. The only known difference from the NV30 is the 256-bit memory bus and the rejection of the currently unprofitable DDR II and returning to regular DDR (although DDR II support is retained, but such variants are unlikely to use a 256-bit bus). This allowed us to achieve a peak memory bandwidth of 27 GB / s! Other than that, there are no major changes. Therefore, for those who are interested, I can only recommend our review of the NV30 architecture.

As for proprietary technologies, by and large, nothing has changed either. Of course, all sorts of optimizations and improvements in algorithms and buffers were made, but there are no fundamental changes (although a twofold increase in shader operations is claimed). However, this is what we expected from the NV35. Similar NVIDIA products (NV15, NV25) have always been an optimization of previous innovations (in NV10 and NV20, respectively).

The only new feature is the UltraShadow technology. It is easy to guess from its name that it is designed to speed up the processing of shadow effects. The above diagram shows that a developer using the new technology can set the depth (interval) of lighting effect processing (zmin;zmax). Theoretically, this will allow you to get a huge win. Especially in the next generation of games, the creation of realistic (read complex and resource-intensive) shadows is given great importance.

The obvious difference in appearance from the 5800U concerns, of course, the cooling system that caused so many complaints. This time things are much better. The board still occupies two slots in the (and two slots in the case) due to the high heatsink and fan, but the cooler itself looks very progressive and solid. Apparently, the release of air outside the system unit was considered unsuccessful. Not because of inefficiency, but rather because of excessive noise. As they say, there is no need to take dirty linen out of the hut: let the noise be isolated by the case, and the power supply fan will handle the heat exchange.

SilentRun technology fights high noise levels in the 5800U — it turns on high speeds only when, in its opinion, it is necessary (details of its implementation in NVIDIA 5200U, 5600U and 5800U reference cards can be found here). The 5900U also works in two modes — processing two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphics. Apparently, the choice of its fan mode, as in the 5800U, depends on the chip’s mode of operation. But there is also a positive difference. In addition to the noticeably lower noise of the second speed (approximately at the level of 5600U), a time delay (5 minutes) has now been added for switching back to low speed. This allows in most cases to get rid of unjustified
