HP has redesigned its gaming desktop with a new name, two looks and even more name-brand parts. The HP Omen 25L and 30L, each named for the number of liters the chassis holds, are redesigns of the Obelisk desktops of the last two years. The desktops, which will release on May 5, will feature the latest Intel and AMD processors and the latest GPUs from Nvidia and AMD. The 25L will start at $899.99, and the 30L will start at $1,199.99.

The primary difference between the two desktops is the size. But with the bigger option comes more cooling. The HP Omen 30L makes an improvement over the HP Omen Obelisk (our current best gaming desktop) by adding a 120mm system fan to the front, in addition to a 92mm exhaust fan. The 25L model, however, still doesn’t have a front intake. Both models will allow for either air or water CPU coolers.

Additionally, the new Omens are on feet that raise the system 15mm off the ground or a desk, which should allow for better intake through the bottom than the Obelisk, which was raised just 4mm. The GPU has also been raised to a higher slot on the motherboard. The systems will use the latest Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake-S desktop CPUs or AMD Ryzen 3000 processors. In theory, you can change out any of the parts and keep this going like a prebuilt system.

Image 1 of 2

(Image credit: HP)(Image credit: HP)

Otherwise, the design is largely similar to the Obelisk, with a button in the back to release one of the side panels so that you can change out parts (it also means that to remove the other side panel, you’ll need to remove an oddly placed screw inside). However, the look is a bit streamlined. HP has redone the logo to remove the Voodoo mask and leave only a clean diamond behind. This system will also have up to six RGB lighting zones, depending on the configuration.

(Image credit: HP)

Building on the Obelisk, the new Omen desktops use even more name-brand parts. HyperX is back as the RAM supplier with its Fury line. The PSU and CPU coolers are made by Cooler Master, and WD is making a WD_Black line of SSDs for these desktops.

Starting configurations will have lesser parts, like the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5500 GPUs, 500W Cooler Master PSUs with Bronze ratings and Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 5 processors.

It definitely seems like a step forward from HP’s previous attempts, which were quite good, at replicating the DIY experience in a prebuilt machine. We’ll have to wait for the new Omen machines to hit our test bench to see if they can take any crowns.

How Superstitions Arose and What They Really Meaned — T&P

Rituals, rituals and customs are an integral part of culture, no less important than the achievements of science or examples of high art.

The most ancient rituals and customs have come down to us through the thick of centuries in the form of signs, superstitions and holidays. Everyone knows the superstitions that warn against broken mirrors and spilling salt, in historical consideration, become a source for the restoration of an archaic type of thinking. An analysis of the origin of superstitions sheds light on the true meaning of signs that unconsciously live in the human mind.

Let’s remember the signs that our grandmothers and mothers believed in, and perhaps we continue to believe ourselves: a bird or a butterfly that flew into the house — to death, returning home before the road and not looking in the mirror — to failure, meeting a woman with empty buckets — to trouble, and to congratulate in advance on your birthday — to misfortune. Each sign is a kind of law that must be relentlessly observed. From almost every misfortune, superstitions offer some kind of magical tool of counteraction: either spit over the left shoulder, or show the tongue to the mirror. The simplest magical procedures performed to save one from misfortune are now no longer recognized as magical, they are automated and desemanticized. In order to understand why our ancestors were afraid of black cats and birds flying into the house, we need to turn to the origins of signs and their connection with the rites of passage.

A bird that flew into a house

A bird that flew into a house is one of the worst signs. According to the beliefs of our ancestors, such a bird is a harbinger of the imminent death of one of the inhabitants of the house. The flying bird must be released as soon as possible, and not to spend the night in the house the next night.

The meaning of this sign is hidden in the beliefs about the afterlife: in many Indo-European cultures it was believed that birds are the spirits of the dead. Drawings of a bird, as if flying out of the body of the deceased, can already be found in rock art. The ancient Greeks believed that birds could move freely between the worlds, plying from the land of people to the underworld of Hades.

Another variant of the sign is a butterfly that has flown into the house. A butterfly is also a messenger of death, typologically similar to a bird, able to fly, and, therefore, following the logic of ancestors, move freely between worlds. In this regard, the etymology of the word is most interesting. In ancient Greek, the words «butterfly» and «soul» were almost identical. In Russian, we observe a similar situation: a butterfly is a diminutive form of the word «grandmother», that is, the spirit of the ancestor. Again, there is a correspondence with the image of the bird-soul. In Germanic languages, the etymology is slightly different. Butterfly — butterfly or Schmetterling — translates as an oil thief, that is, a witch. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that witches were able to supernaturally transform into various living creatures, including black cats and butterflies, in order to steal oil. Obviously, being afraid of witches in the guise of butterflies, our ancestors invented an appropriate sign that gives reason to be always on the alert.

Return before the road

Everyone is familiar with this sign: when you return home, forgetting something, you must either show your tongue to your reflection or sit on the path. Otherwise, we will fail. Why?

From time immemorial, crossing any spatial boundary has been considered a sacred act. Crossing the border and finding himself in a «foreign», not home space, a person felt unprotected. The protection in the house was not only the walls and the roof, but also a host of ancestors: from time immemorial, all burials were made not in remote cemeteries, but right on the home plot. Hence the tradition of aristocratic family crypts, as a rule, located in close proximity to the house. Under the threshold of each house, stillborns were often buried — a ritual marking the border between home and other people’s space. Here you can also recall pseudoscientific theories that suddenly become relevant — try to pronounce the word «threshold» in reverse to make sure that the border is connected with the other world. And the rapids in many villages still look like coffins.

Accordingly, salvation from a «penalty» border crossing, returning home is an introduction to the power of home space, then the very grandmother’s «let’s sit on the path.» The reflection, which, according to many signs, takes all illnesses and hardships upon itself, acts in this sign as a symbolic double of the returner, to whom he conveys all the failures.

Happy birthday in advance

It was obvious for our ancestors that accepting congratulations before the appointed time could be a bad omen. After all, it was possible not to live until the birthday. But why did simple words mean so much to people?

Words in the representation of archaic cultures had a sacred meaning. The word itself was magical (hence all spells and incantations) — just like writing. The old Russian word «pesati» meant «depict something.» This is where the expressions “to paint an icon” and “to paint a picture” come from. In this etymology, we see that writing is identified with a real act — an image, albeit a writer, a device for drawing and writing, reality. The German verb lesen — to read — also refers us to magical practice: the second meaning of the verb is «to collect», and linguists tend to believe that the ancient Germans collected runic words from special sticks for magical purposes.

Woman with empty buckets

Meeting a woman with empty buckets is a disaster. Of course, there is a way to avoid it: you need to cross yourself, spit three times over your left shoulder, or cross a fig in your pocket. In this sign, the logic of participation works, correlating the part with the whole: in other words, if the bucket you see is empty, then in your pockets, on the table, in the pot in your house will also be empty. The methods of dealing with misfortune are also transparent: since the devilish forces are responsible for adversity, then you need to fight them either with the sign of the cross or spitting (it was believed that demons walk behind the left shoulder — spitting was aimed straight at their faces).

Another method, no less archaic, is a demonstration of sexual power, or rather, its reduction to the crossing of two fingers in a pocket. The fig, symbolizing the male genitalia, drives away the demon, showing him the life force of a person. It is no coincidence that many ancient Greek boundary pillars — herms — were in the form of men with a phallus. They symbolized, most likely, not fertility, but the potential possibility of using the phallus in relation to offenders illegally crossing the border, or simply demonstrated the power of the owners.

Thus, we can see that a large number of everyday rituals, signs and superstitions are associated with archaic ideas about crossing the border. The correct rite of initiation, competent crossing of real boundaries and conversation with otherworldly beings have always been important for our ancestors, and therefore, in the form of laws-signs, they have survived to this day.

Signs for travelers: what to do and what not to do before the road

The holiday season has begun. Of course, tourists dream that their trip would be great. To do this, many observe special road signs.

Have a good trip: folk omens before the road

Sit on the path

Perhaps this is the most popular sign among Russians, which is observed by most travelers. It is believed that if this is not done, troubles may arise, and the trip will go so-so.

There is an opinion that the folk omen originates from pagan times, when a brownie was considered the owner of the house. The household sat down on the path to respect him, as if asking permission to travel.

In fact, the omen is very useful. Vacationers have a few minutes to look around: whether everything is turned off, whether everything is packed for the journey.

Hold on to the corner of the kitchen table

Another sign of a successful journey.

Why a kitchen table? Since ancient times, people have believed that the table at which the whole family gathers is a kind of altar with special energy, a symbol of happiness and a talisman for each family member.

It was believed that to hold on to the corner of the kitchen table for a couple of minutes would attract good luck and return home to everyone.

Walk on the right foot

It is important to leave the house “on the wrong foot” — you need to step over the threshold with your right foot.

Stepping out on the left foot meant losing energy and giving the opportunity for evil spirits to do mischief.

By the way, for the same reason, shoes should only be put on from the right foot.

Popular and unusual signs.

Travel on certain days of the week

The best days to travel are believed to be Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday.

A trip that started on Monday or Friday can bring trouble and trouble. By the way, these days are considered unfavorable for moving.

The origins of this belief are unclear. However, there are travelers who carefully look at departure days according to signs, and not in accordance with the vacation schedule.

Put a coin under the seat

It is believed that if you put a coin under a seat on an airplane or under a mattress on a train, then the trip will be financially successful. At least there will be enough money for a vacation, and maybe a part of the allocated limit will remain.

«Happy» signs on the road:

to wait on the day of departure — to a wonderful rest;

⦁ to see a dog when leaving the house — the trip will be pleasant, and all vacation plans will come true;

⦁ sneeze several times before going out — the road will be easy;

⦁ find a coin on the road — good luck on vacation;

⦁ stumble with your right foot — for a successful and calm journey;

⦁ the worm crawled out onto the road — good news;

⦁ meet a person with a full bucket or a big bag — for a happy trip;

⦁ underwear accidentally put inside out — good luck in business.

Do’s and Don’ts before leaving

Don’t tell anyone about your vacation plans

It is advised not to share your ideas before the trip. Like, they can jinx or envy. Even if the neighbors ask where you soaped yourself with your suitcases, it’s better to answer: Kudykina Gora. There is also a less rude answer: on business.

By the way, the sign is useful in terms of the safety of your home. In order not to have a desire to rob an apartment or house during the absence of the owners, it is better to keep silent about the trip. Even in social networks, which is oh so difficult for many.

Do not wash your hair and do not cut your nails before a trip

It is believed that in this way a person loses his energy, which means that he will quickly run out of steam on the way, and part of the positive expected from a vacation will be washed away.

This sign is more often observed in the light version: do not cut your hair and nails on the day of departure.

Whoever wants to fully follow the sign, we can advise you to do a manicure in advance with gel polish, which holds firmly, and braid your hair.

Bad omen: what to do if you find yourself in a situation that promises bad luck

Ways to neutralize negativity.

Do not sew in front of the road

It is also not recommended to sew with the needle in front of the road. They said: you will sew happiness; how many stitches — so many obstacles.

If the situation is hopeless and you urgently need to patch a hole (by the way, riding in leaky clothes is also a bad omen), then you should do it alone, silently, biting your tongue between your teeth.

Not returning home

Coming back is a bad omen. This popular belief is true in everyday life, let alone travel.

But if travelers suddenly left documents with money at home, forgot to turn off the iron, they will have to come back.

In this case, it is advised to take a look in the mirror. You can sit on the path again.

And it’s better to arrange a control check before leaving: everything is turned off, closed and collected.

Do not wash the floors after leaving

Our grandmothers also said: if you don’t wash the floors after the relatives leave, you will cover up the traces. That is, a person will either stay on a trip longer or — the worst option — will not return to this house at all.

Picking up a rag and a vacuum cleaner was «allowed» after relatives or guests reached their destination.

By the way, this taboo does not apply to washing dishes.

Lovers of cleanliness should do the cleaning before the travelers leave.

Photo: pixabay.com

What else is not advised to do:

d Borrow money or things — to financial instability;

⦁ to see a button or a nail on the road — to failure;

⦁ count money on the way — to spend it quickly;

⦁ going around the car in front is not good;

⦁ touching the spare tire in the trunk will definitely come in handy;

⦁ take pictures of your train or plane — there may be problems, emergencies;

⦁ turn around at your home — homesickness and family will bite you.

«Do not anger fate»: about strange superstitions on Friday the 13th

We talk about popular beliefs and explain their meaning.

What to do if “bad” signs appeared before the trip

If you come across large sticks, branches along the way, you don’t need to step over them or step on them so as not to bring trouble on yourself. It is best to avoid these items.

If you meet a woman along the way, it promises problems. You can neutralize the influence by folding a fico in your pocket. But the met man or pregnant woman — fortunately, especially with bags.

If a black cat crosses the road, there are several ways to get rid of possible troubles. They recommend stopping and twisting the headdress, you can put a stole on your head. Walk the section of the road that the animal crossed, backwards. Cross the middle and index fingers first on the left and then on the right hand.

By the way, there is an opinion that if a cat ran across the road from left to right, then it brought good luck on its paws.

Earlier, Vsluh.ru told how to attract good luck and what to do with bad omens if the situation bodes trouble.
