I am impressed with this chip. The stock clock is 3.4ghz, with turbo up to 3.6ghz and 1.24v when all four cores are active. I prioritize stability and noise over performance so my overclocks tend to be conservative. I was able to overclock to 4ghz and reduce the core voltage to 1.07v! Using the stock cooler temps peak at 70*C under load and the fan doesn’t even spin up to 100%.
Next step is to put an aftermarket cooler on it and shoot for 4.4ghz with temps under 70*C and fan under 1200 rpm. Motherboard is the Asus P8Z77-V LK with an Antec Earthwatts 500W power supply.
Update: the stock cooler only spun up to 1280 rpm during a 5 minute burn.

I’m not sure you’ll be able to get to 4. 4 GHz on reduced voltage. I wasn’t able to get past 4.3 GHz on mine with stock voltage…
Of course it’s an OC and YMMV.

4.3 ghz is what I got to without changing stock voltage on my i5-3570k on an Asrock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard and a Coolermaster 212 Evo cooler.
The one thing you’ll find out quickly with Ivy Bridge overclocking is temps become an issue fast, unfortunately Ivy Bridge shits out heat compare to Sandy Bridge. From what I’ve read, it’s partially because of the smaller process used which consolidates heat as well as the Ivy Bridge chips apparently using an inferior TIM compared to Sandy Bridge.

Well, 4.4 didn’t happen at 1.07 for me. Bumped voltage to 1.2v and it seems happy now. Temps in the mid 70’s with the hottest cores touching 80*C using the stock cooler at 2100rpm. IMO, too warm, will push further when I get a better cooler.

The 212 Evo’s really not bad. To get something significantly better, you’re looking at a high end air cooler or water cooling.

IB gets REALLY hot when you push it, especially if you’re adding volts to get your OC up.
I saw 100C+ on mine when using a beefy Noctua cooler in push-pull config (admittedly this was when the offset was pumping north of 1. 3V into the CPU at about 4.4)
I settled for 4.2 (sustained across all four cores) in the end. Have a read here for what I learned about OC-ing on Asus Z77 boards. The most important post is probably this one — basically the offset adjustment the BIOS says you’re applying bears very little relationship to what actually happens.

Anandtech did a pretty good writeup on this stuff and found 4. 5ghz seemed to be the inflection point where watt/ghz ramped up. They got there with only 1.1v, which is pretty impressive. Mine will not do that but I have the stock cooler, and hotter temps means even more voltage is needed to be stable.

That forum thread has some fairly indepth info on ‘beating the heat’ so to speak when OCing IB chips. It is definitely not the faint of heart however as it requires removing the heat spreader and replacing the thermal goop. He’s also done an amazing job lapping the heat spreader and is using a pretty hefty cooler, but the potential is there if you really want to go for it.
I’m considering doing the same thing myself. I haven’t had an adventure in a while :devious:

heh. I saw that and a few others… I am tempted, but I need to make sure I have $200 to burn just in case I screw up.

water cooling and overclocking core i5 — Question
water cooling and overclocking core i5 — Question
SK
Svetlana Kochetkova
ivics are known for their hot temper, and therefore became interested in CBO
Tell me, does CBO justify itself on a core i5 3570k ivy bridge processor?
How much can you overclock it?
The budget is not constrained. People who do not understand, please pass by.
I wrote about the budget so that there would not be a bunch of answers like «it’s expensive»))
3770k many times faster?? ? ) look at performance tests. In general, it is only 10-15% faster, and then specifically in my case of use (games), buying it is a waste of money, I’d better buy video
By the way, you can buy a good one for $ 80-90, which is not so expensive
«overclocking a processor without overclocking memory and increasing voltage is unrealistic»
are you telling me this? LOL
I’m far from new to this business, but this is the first time I’ve come across CBO.
for MOSFETs and RAM — I have a side cooler in my case that cools it all down extremely well.
Adom Adom don’t compare sandwich and ivy, they are different things.
the sandic is extremely good to chase and specifically your 2500k to chase up to 5Hz + with good cooling (even air) and a successful instance
- overclocking
- cooling
LD
Lena Dmitrenko
Just push harder. On good air, you can disperse no less. And if the budget allows, then why are you sitting on the i5? You can take the i7-3770K, it is many times faster than yours without overclocking
SS
Svetlana Solopova
One moment, the «curve» is an expensive cooler (cool), the more expensive, the more, the better, there is a linear value for the sandy bridge, not everything is so simple with ivy… .
By the way, no, a good kit costs at least $130, which is cheaper than Christmas decorations and bullshit.
How much to overclock it individually, my 2500K took 4.4 GHz at 1.32, and for some it’s easy and 4.8 GHz, it all depends on the success of your copy and the directness of your hands. The 3770K easily ran 4.3 at 1.175, but overs and prt 1.25 won’t start. Once again, everything is individual.
i5 2500K, i7 3770K, Noctua D14.

Kristina Archvadze
It seems to me that there will be no sense in water, it’s easier to take a top cooler, even if overclocking is slightly lower than
Enge
CBO up to 100 — exactly, for the «Christmas tree») You lose sight of a very important point — overclocking the processor without overclocking the memory and increasing the voltage is unrealistic. You will remove the Dunka and install a water block, but what about MOSFETs and RAM? Who will «blow» on them? So to SVO there are also bells and whistles for memory / power. As a result, you will spend time / money …. and you will come to a good «air»)))

Super!
Excellent! It flies for this money! I thought to take amd but settled on it. No regrets!
In half life 1 gives out 1000 fps in minacraft at the maximum settings of 100 fps. 1.Not heated
2.Comp «flies» no
12 years old with AMD down the drain!
I’m waiting for new products from Intel)))
Excellent! I spent 12 years on AMD processors and as it turned out, in vain! I took a long time to decide and switched to this animal from AMD Phenom II 1055 x6.
The system works on the mother
MSI Z77A-G43,
DDR3 ___4Gbx2 Kingston HyperX blu KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G,
Kingston SSDNow V200 128GB
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Cooler Master HAF 912 Plus Black
FSP650-80GLN
Now I know that the computer boots up for a maximum of 10-12 seconds, it does not make noise at night and there is no need to hang 5 coolers on the case for cooling. Low temperature, perfect SSD performance, fast in games. And in general there are no any glitches in the work. no!
456qq
A good option for little money
Excellent! fps. It is better to overpay a little, and take a really worthwhile thing. While standing in the current, I didn’t drive, I’ll finish the system, and I’ll bang it Fast, cold no
Abrbbaba
Definitely worth taking when choosing a gaming system up to 1k if you don’t like to take risks.
Excellent! Checked by more than a dozen people percent in a compartment with mother Asus P8Z77.
I have Thermalright Macho CO, cores above 65g do not fry even during auto-acceleration.
For 225 ye the best choice. I must say, at the same temperature without scalping, the performance of Haswells is no better. Therefore, I see no reason to overpay for the same proven socket 1150 mother. Overclocking has not yet been required, auto overclocking to 3.8 GHz is enough. For overclocking in 2 years, for example, to 4.8-5 GHz, you will have to scalp, but this is a minus for Evie Bridge and Haswell …

I do not regret buying very long in games. Easily unleash the potential of any graphics card
Powerful, 22nm process technology, cool No

The best option
I’ll start right away. Better than this «handsome» is not found. Before that, there was AMD Phenom II X4 945 (95W), I thought that it couldn’t be faster, and all these are marketing ploys. But when I took the i3570K, I understood, and once again I was convinced that AMD is a popular cheap a la «brand». i3570k — bullet, 32 degrees at maximum 100% load with AIDA64 test for 10 minutes. At idle 28 degrees. (Ice Hammer 4330 + Arctic Cooling MX-4) The graphics processor is enough for 2010-2011 games at medium settings.
I advise! Temperature: idle / load — 28/32. Speed: 2nd position in the AIDA64 testWork: everything flies. Integrated graphics: decent level Completely absent
Amerto
price-quality ratio — excellent!
Excellent! So pleased with the processor, it overclocks itself at a load of up to 3.9 GHz (it helped a little and voila 4. 6 !!!)
the perfect solution for work and play! Low heat, great overclockability, great performance they are not available

After the purchase, you will understand that you did not lose with the choice
Excellent! Excellent percent! At 4500 MHz with a Macho cooler, it crashes stably without salping. In the games I turn on the turntable, and then at the minimum speed, I did not see the temperature at RealTemp above 70 degrees even when running in «warming up» tests. I am satisfied with the purchase for all 99%, where 1% minus is its price, although you have to pay for quality. After starting a system with an SSD, it seems that for the next couple of years a faster processor is not worth thinking about. Fast hard worker, for games, that’s it. Thermal paste between the stone and the lid, when overclocked, you will need a good cooler
DefosROCK
The best processor for Core i5 games, you can safely overclock at this temperature!
Excellent! The best processor for games, and in terms of price, everything is very cool in conjunction with the GeForce GTX 670, there is no equal, I wanted to take the AMD-FX 8350 earlier, but changed my mind, because the speed of the intel core i3 on the laptop was disappointed , I used to have AMD, I bought it and I don’t regret everything loading quickly, like on a laptop with core i3, I’m generally satisfied 🙂 Performance. Energy consumption. Game. Don’t get warm. They are not.
Grand_Pro
Best percent!!!
Excellent! I have been using it for 2 years now.
I constantly load multimedia renderer.
At full load 90-100% after working for several hours remains cold (about 30 degrees)
Proc. tested by time and a bunch of people. Stability, performance, INTEL, temperature. only pluses.
GreenBlot
Great performance for a penny
Excellent! With liquid cooling, it turned out to be stable at 4.8GHz at the moment, but in general the system boots at 5.1GHZ We still have to torture it))) excellent performance for the money used to be a price, but now it’s gone
Kostya500
Ivy Bridge just class
Great! I bought a processor with an ASUS P8Z77-V LX motherboard. What can I say — the processor is just a «miracle» cold, fast and energy-saving. Overclocked immediately to 4.2. For a very long time I chose between the i7 3770K and it. I looked through a lot of tests (the game component is important to me because I’m a gamer). If you are building a computer for modern games, then take the i5! The difference between i7 and i5 is 1-2 fps, but if for video encoding and archiving, then of course the choice is for i7, and it’s nice that it overtakes i7 2600k in stock. 8 core AMD processors. But there is a strong minus, if you are going to overclock it, then the trouble is, above 4.2 the temperature jumps up just a lot. If you are confused by the price, then make up your mind, believe it is worth it. Performance, temperature, energy-saving. In games, it goes with a bang. Temperature during overclocking, need a good cooling system.
Max de Valmont
The best processor for a professional user, gamer
Great! Paired with fast memory at 1866 MHz frequency, ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 motherboard and SSD Vertex 4, all games and programs load instantly, all at high settings (in games), it’s a pleasure to work now.
Manually overclocked the processor to 4.8 GHz at a voltage of 1.2 V. I don’t see the need. The processor is cooled by a serious water system in a no less serious case. Therefore, there are no crashes and freezes.
In general, the processor met all expectations (compared with other recent models). I recommend it to everyone who wants to have a serious and powerful stuffing. Speed, high overclocking, low heat dissipation, low current consumption The price will seem too high to many
mvn1005
Exceeded expectations
Great! overclocking broke all the tests (I will not return to AMD again) and with such a heat pack! In the near future, I think to add an SSD, then you can go to the moon! Never save 50 pieces of silver it’s not worth it. ahead of time not revealed
Nekkit25
The best for the money!
Excellent! Just a great processor, it overclocks without difficulty, a cold one does not heat up much even with a boxed cooler, but then you can’t overclock it. Cold. There is enough power for any task and the game also pulls well. Excellent overclocking potential None
ORIGINAL
Excellent model.
Excellent! Switched to it from AMD. The processor fully met my expectations. High performance level, stable operation at 4500mhz at 1.2v. (with Thermalright HR-02 Macho). Full load temperature at this frequency in LinX and Prime95 did not rise above 77 degrees (in games of the level of Batelfield 3, it does not even reach 70). All programs / games fly. At the moment, this is the best processor in its price category. Fast, cool (including a normal cooler), unlocked multiplier, HD Graphics 4000 graphics core and, of course, PCI-E 3.0 support. Did not reveal, everything suits.
poplava
In general — I’m satisfied, the thing is worthy, although it’s much more expensive.
..
GoodThe extra money appeared and I decided to switch from AMD to Intel. The first thing that struck me was the more modest size of the stone compared to the AMD processor … It’s also cool that there are no «contact legs» on the reverse side … which there was a risk of bending … Indeed, it heats up much less during operation, than the same Phenom (965)
In general, I am satisfied, a worthy thing, although it is much more expensive… Above Not a cheap pleasure.
R_o_V_e_R
Intel is intel.
Great! I took it in the winter only for games. I thought for a long time, looked at all the tests, at first I wanted to take the AMD fx-6300 or even wait for the haswell, but it was already impossible to wait, since my percentage was already old (AMD 5000+) and specifically already infuriated me, and then I realized that it was better I’ll have to change Intel’s motherboard all the way, and immediately bought a good cooler (cnps 10x performa) I haven’t allowed it to overclock yet, the cooler generally works at minimum speed, you can’t even hear it. everything works on the msi z77a-g43 board, I barely bought it =) In general, as soon as you install it, you will immediately feel the power. Don’t look at the price, just buy it. I advise everyone. Fast. Weak heat dissipation. Weak power consumption. Easy acceleration. Powerful video core battlefield 3 25 frames =)) Minimum settings. Between the processor die and the processor cover lies thermal paste, not solder, over time you will have to change to a more expensive one.
SulAl
I recommend
Great! Everything is OK, Intel drives as usual, on the motherboard z77 the Windows index is 7.8, the games are cheers, it practically does not heat up. best processor for the money not noticed
Andrey
Excellent!
Excellent! Very good and very cold, without overclocking 32 degrees, in room 23, happy as an elephant. all no
Valery
An excellent stone with great potential for work
Excellent! Without load, the temperature is 33-35 degrees, I overclocked it to 4.2 GHz using the utility, in games I saw a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius — there is a cooler master V6 GT cooler. When converting video from fullhd to dvd format, the load on the cores was up to 50 percent, which is very, very good. I think it’s worth the money, especially for those who will be engaged in overclocking No
Eternal
Ingenious invention
Excellent! Faithfully, I have been working for almost 4.5 years. Quietly chases up to 4.5 MHz (paired with Macho). And it still copes with all the tasks, I don’t even think about replacing it. No problem. Reliable, time-tested.
Productive.
Good acceleration. Price (apparently due to lack of competition from AMD)
Nadintschik
Flies!
Excellent! The system flies with it even without a video card. Temperature 32C with Zalman CNPS10X Optima cooler. Flies 🙂 Expensive 🙁
Coward Yuri
This is a cannon. And even now Haswell is no better.
Excellent! , because any overclocking gives at least some kind of instability, maybe I’m a bad overclocker. Paired with GTX970 all the latest games like The Witcher3, Battiefieid Hardline just fly at max. I will probably change it in another 2 3 years and then to DDR4, but that’s a completely different story.
