Ryzen R7 2700X Beginner Overclocking Guide: an 8-core bargain in the fast lane

Currently there is a very large selection of processors, be it from the blue Intel or the red AMD bearing. But what do you actually need for everyday work, gambleors or a few pictures or pictures? To edit videos from the holiday? Does it have to be the Intel Core i9-9900k or the Ryzen 9 3900X from AMD? Do I need a Ryzen of the 3. Generation? Maybe a cheap Athlon or rather an Intel from the HEDT range from the 9th century is enough. Generation or a thread ripper from AMD?  The prices of the processors could not be more different, as could the services they have to offer. In addition, you need a motherboard for the various CPUs and here the prices also vary very strongly. From cheap to cheap to extremely expensive!

But what CPU should I buy now for daily work with office applications, the gamble and for editing smaller holiday projects in the field of image and video editing? If you look at the current prices, a Core i9-9900K still costs a proud 530€, the Ryzen 3700X is currently at approx. 290€. If you really want to have the latest and best motherboard, then here come another 200 to approx. 750€ to it. However, if you buy an A320 motherboard in conjunction with an AMD Athlon processor, the total amount is a maximum of 130€. However, such a system is only suitable for surfing the net, the usual office applications and for playing solitaire.

The Ryzen R5Ryzen 5 2600 or the R7 2700 with or without X currently provide a good basis for the next few years. These processors of the 2nd Ryzen generation – also known as Zen+ – are current price/performance processors that allow you to work both and properly. Work is not only Office, but also: streaming, image & video editing. Thanks to SMT, there are either 6 cores with 12 threads or 8 cores and 16 threads.

If the current street prices of these processors are taken, then you will notice that here, for example, one with the Ryzen 7 2700X in combination with an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max in total approx. 285€ paid. So about the price you have to look at for a Ryzen 3700x – without a motherboard. If we add the price of the 3700x, the currently due 105€ for the MSI B450 Tomahawk, we are already at 395€in total, which is an additional price of approx. 38%. Now the Grätschen question is, how much extra power do I get for it? In single-core it is a maximum of 15% and in the multicore approx. 20%. At the latest here, the Kevin-Klaus and his Mandy-Chantal should notice that there is a difference between 38% more money and only 20% more performance! Okay, before I start to put the majority of readers on torture, move on in times.

This first – of a total of two – reviews about the Ryzen of the 2nd. Generation, should serve especially for beginners of overclocking in order to obtain a practical guide to overclocking. In the first step, I’ll briefly present the system you’re using, I’ll explain to you what programs you need to check your temperatures, the voltages and, of course, the stability of your system. Then I explain step by step how I overclocked the Ryzen 7 2700X on 4.2 GHz on all 8 cores. Every now and then I will also have some special features, such as the core voltage in conjunction with load-line calibration (LLC).

At the time of the review, the system costs approx. €1,620 and is certainly not a low-budget box. If you reduce the whole thing a bit in price and combine e. g. the Ryzen 7 2700X with an MSI B450 Tomahawk, 16 GB GSkill Ripjaws 3200 MHz, a 500 GB Crucial P1, the Cooler Master ML240, the Be Quiet Pure Base 500 with viewing window, a Xilence Performance 650 Watt non modular and a PowerColor RX 5700 Red Dragon, then it goes even under 1000 Euros. And that’s a bit of fun.

The quite comparable system currently costs approx. 980€ (daily prices fluctuate, of course) and it offers a solid base, which can be upgraded to the Ryzen 3000 models, thanks to the AM4 socket and the very good MSI B450 Tomahawk boards, if the prices fall or if you have to do it in the next few years? Time will tell! So, and before all Nvidia Fanboys go to any forum of their choice and joke about using an AMD only system, yes – you can alternatively install a GTX 1660 Super or the RTX 2060 with or without Super. This would increase the price by approx. • 100€ differ.

Ultimately, with the system in 1080p or even 1440p you have a very gaming machine that can do much more. 3.2.1. and immediately the Schlaubergers come from the AMD camp and will tell me that a Ryzen R5 3600 fits into budget here. This would make gaming performance in 1080p at low-settings even better, thanks to the 15% faster single-core performance… mimimi I have a pointed knee! Yes, i think almost everyone knows that by now, thanks to the 1000 and first gaming benchmarks!

The fact is that the difference between the two CPUs in 1080p doesn’t matter much in Max settings and if we go to 1440p, then the performance of the CPU won’t matter at all, because we’ll be in the GPU limit. Further explanations are unnecessary at this point, since the opinions are purely subjective and the measurable differences in FPS are so marginal that it ultimately depends on the further applications. The aim of the review is to demonstrate a strong all-round platform including the overclocking of the Ryzen 7 2700X. Almost a basis in which the topic of streaming, image and video editing is also considered. The Ryzen 7 2700X can certainly score points thanks to its 8 cores and 16 threads!

Although overclocking can yield tremendous benefits, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. However, there is a level of satisfaction you get from unlocking extra performance from a processor that you already own. The AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700X is already an eight-core, sixteen-thread powerhouse in its own right. Nevertheless, each processor still has a little bit of untapped processing power in its veins that many owners don’t exploit. Whether you’re intentionally or just landed on this guide out of sheer curiosity, we’ll help you squeeze every megahertz of performance out of your Ryzen™ 7 2700X processor.
 

Overclock with MSI X470 GAMING PRO CARBON

Although the guide is tailored specifically around the Ryzen™ 7 2700X, the procedure is the same for other Ryzen™ 2000-series processors. What we do recommend is that you do your overclocking on a X470 motherboard, which typically comes with a robust voltage regulator module (VRM) to boost your possibility for success. If you need help finding a suitable motherboard for your overclocking adventure, we have an array of X470 motherboards that are built for this specific task. For this guide, we’re rolling with the X470 Gaming Pro Carbon.

Apart from the processor itself and the motherboard, cooling is a limiting factor in the overclocking process as well. Even though you might feel tempted to try your luck with AMD’s stock cooler, we would advise against it for the well-being of your processor. The job is better suited for an aftermarket air or All-In-One (AIO) liquid cooler. On this occasion, we’ve hired Corsair’s Hydro Series™ h215i PRO RGB 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler to make sure our Ryzen™ 7 2700X doesn’t melt during the overclocking process.

Step 1: Getting To Know Your Processor

Before you can overclock the Ryzen™ 7 2700X, you must understand how it works and why you should overclock it. According to AMD’s official specifications, the processor has a 3.7 GHz base clock and a 4.3 GHz boost clock – on paper at least. What many Ryzen™ 7 2700X owners don’t know is that the processor only boosts to that frequency on a single core. When all eight cores are active, the all-core boost doesn’t get near the 4.3 GHz mark. If you’ve never really paid much attention to your Ryzen™ 7 2700X when it’s under load, here’s how you can find your actual all-core boost for your processor.

Programs such as Prime95, IntelBurnTest, OCCT or Cinebench are particularly good at creating a 100 percent load on your processor. On the other hand, you’ll also need specialized software to monitor your processor’s vitals during your overclocking endeavor. Popular choices include CPU-Z, HWMonitor, HWiNFO, and AIDA64. However, we prefer our in-house Command Center software since it provides us with all the important information we need in a single package without the hassle of running multiple programs.

Once you’re all set up, proceed to fire up the stress test and the monitoring software of your choice. Take note of your processor’s all-core boost clock and voltage necessary to get to that frequency. You can also take this opportunity to evaluate your cooling solution’s performance. AMD specifies 85°C as the maximum safe temperature for a Ryzen™ 7 2700X processor. Ideally, you would want to have at least 20°C to 30°C of thermal headroom at stock before thinking of overclocking the chip.

When you got the information you need, restart your system and spam the «Del» key on your keyboard to access your motherboard’s BIOS. The real fun starts now.
 

Step 2: Sprinkling The Magic Dust Inside The BIOS

Adjust CPU Ratio to 42

After you’re inside the BIOS, navigate to the CPU Ratio option that’s under the OC tab. This option is also commonly known as the CPU multiplier. Since we’re aiming for a 4.2 GHz overclock, change the value from Auto to 42. Time for a friendly heads-up. Overclocking potential varies from chip to chip. The average Ryzen™ 7 2700X should be able to attain an overclock in the range of 4.1 GHz to 4.2 GHz, while the really good samples can reach 4.3 GHz to 4.4 GHz. It’s a matter of winning the silicon lottery.

Change the CPU Load-Line Calibration

Scroll down and enter the DigitALL Power section. We’re going to focus on the CPU Load-Line Calibration Control option. In a nutshell, Load-Line Calibration (LLC) basically compensates for voltage drops (Vdroop) when a processor is put under a heavy workload. When your Ryzen™ 7 2700X suddenly goes from idle to load, LLC kicks in and supplies the processor with extra voltage to prevent the Vdroop phenomenon from affecting the processor’s stability. In most scenarios, a medium setting should suffice for an everyday system. So, you can safely change the Auto setting to Mode 3 or 4.

Adjust CPU Core Voltage to 1.35V

Return to the main OC tab and scroll down to the CPU Core Voltage option, which controls the amount of voltage that is supplied to the processor. Use the values that you previously obtained from the stock test as a reference. In our case, our sample is stable at 3975 MHz at 1.28V so we know for a fact we’ll need a voltage above that to run a higher frequency. We can use 1.35V as we consider that voltage a very good starting point. Now, 1.35V isn’t a magic number by any means, and you can always substitute it for a more conservative value if you desire.

Press F10 and Exit

When you’re finished modifying the necessary options, hit the F10 key on your keyboard to save and restart the system. Before exiting, you a window pop up showing you a summary of all the changes that you’ve made up to this point. Now would be a good time to go through the list thoroughly and make you make any mistakes. If you’ve observant, you’ll notice that the AMD Cool’n’Quiet option has been disabled automatically. You can leave that option alone for now.

Step 3: Putting The Overclock To The Test

If your system fails to boot and/or enter your operating system, it’s an indication that the overclock is unstable, which usually means adding more voltage. Time to make a return to the BIOS. The X470 GAMING PRO CARBON utilizes voltage increments of 0.0125V. So, if you started with a value of 1.35V like we did, the next value should be 1.3625V. You can either type this value manually into the box or just hit the + key to increase it. Here’s a word of caution. AMD recommends Ryzen™ 7 2700X owners to not run their processors beyond 1.4V. If you’re a performance chaser, there’s no harm in going as high as 1.45V as long as you have a capable cooling solution that can keep the heat under control.

Test for stability

If you’ve made it inside your operating system, the next step is to test the overclock. Stress tests in the likes of Prime95 and IntelBurnTest are a good way to detect quick instability. Nevertheless, they should be taken with a pinch of salt. Although many overclocking enthusiasts swear by the aforementioned software and punish their processors for insanely long hours, the real-world usage is still the best stress test you can run on your processor.

Stress tests generally put unrealistic workloads on your processor. Unless you own a really high-performance cooling system, it’s normal to see your temperatures oscillate around the 85°C range. The Ryzen™ 7 2700X starts to thermal throttle at 95°C, and you should avoid hitting that temperature at all costs. Running your processor at that temperature during long periods of time can be detrimental to your processor’s health. If you’re the type of user that work your system heavily on a daily basis, it would be wise to back the multiplier down a notch even if it means losing 100 MHz of performance.

 

Last but not least, enable AMD Cool’n’Quiet

When you’re utterly satisfied that your overclock is stable, go back into the BIOS for one last time. Navigate to the OC and look under the CPU Features section to find the AMD Cool’n’Quiet option. The Cool’n’Quiet feature is responsible for reducing your processor’s frequency and voltage when it’s idling. This not only helps save power but also keeps your system as quiet as possible since your fans for your cooling solution won’t work as hard.

AMD Ryzen processors have become quite popular in the world markets recently, and this is not particularly strange. Intel is still having trouble securing the correct supply of its processors and their prices have gone up. This is also evident in our market, where the Core i5 9600K is even 100% more expensive than the competitive Ryzen 5 2600, and for the price of the mentioned model, you can buy almost the most powerful processor from AMD — Ryzen 7 2700. And although Ryzen is a bit lacking competitive models for Intel, They are a very common choice, also in our recommended computer kits for gamers. nine0021

Recommended Computer Kits

It must also be admitted that the potential for overclocking Ryzen processors is not too great, and the first real chance to improve this will be only after the introduction of the Ryzen 3000 series. However, the most popular models, such as the R5 2600, can still be overclocked by 15-20% on all cores (not just in turbo mode for individual players), and this game is worth the candle. Which motherboard do I need to overclock AMD Ryzen processors?

The most important is the chipset, it should be AMD B350, AMD X370, AMD B450 or AMD X470. Overclocking on motherboards with the cheapest A320 chipset is not possible at all. Secondly, it would be nice if the motherboard had at least one heatsink on the transistor side of the processor, but it already has the lion’s share of models available on the market. Almost any motherboard will allow you to overclock R5 series processors with six cores. For example, worth recommending:

How to overclock a processor with AMD Ryzen Master and what problems we may encounter

Ryzen Master is an application that allows you to overclock an AMD Ryzen processor, optimize RAM and monitor components. However, you should be aware that its functionality may vary depending on the motherboard or processor used. One motherboard will allow you to change settings on the fly, while others will require you to restart your computer. In our case, we used a board with an AMD X470 chipset, so the best and solid ASUS PRIME X470-PRO motherboard and changing parameters on the fly were not possible. nine0021

First of all, I would like to point out that there can be many methods for checking stability, and each one may have its own. I will present here one of the most demanding and at the same time the fastest, because a quick stability check of an octa-core processor using normal games or even benchmarks can be unreliable. The AM4 motherboard tests forced me to look for the most demanding methods, and the method that I will present will allow you to check even more than the stability itself, but also whether the overclocked processor efficiency decreases over time due to overheating itself or the power supply on the motherboard board. This last issue is also important because not every AM4 motherboard simply overclocks, there are those that keep top performance for a moment and then throttling and permanently slowing down due to overheating of the CPU power supply section (particularly boards with incomplete cooling of this sections). There are also boards that, despite the complete cooling of the section after a while, will simply turn off the computer to protect the motherboard from damage — here, for example, you can provide Gigabyte boards based on the B350 chipset. In this case, don’t increase the CPU voltage excessively and the problem should go away. But to the point… Applications to use:

  • LinX AMD Edition
  • HWiNFO64 (najwygodniej wybrać wersję Installer)
  • Ryzen Master

How to control performance and temperature?

The easiest and best way to open all three applications at the same time, similar to the one below, that is, spread everything over a large part of the screen. Unfortunately, LinX running on AMD processors is only on the forums, I couldn’t find a version even in English. This, however, does not bother us, because the most important information for us will still be legible. First of all, in the LinX AMD Edition application, select the options indicated in the screenshot in the place indicated by the number 1 — the amount of RAM (we choose 6 GB — 6144 MB, but if we have only 8 GB of RAM, you can choose 4096 MB) and the number of test iterations (10 at the beginning is enough, we can choose more if we want to run stability tests that give almost 100% confidence in the correct operation of the overclocked system). After we select these options, click on «Start» (the button marked two in the screenshot) and do not use the computer at this time, which would be difficult anyway, since the application heavily loads the processor and RAM and squeezes out of them seventh sweat. After 10 passes (the bar stops flashing green, only turns blue) there are two things to note in the next screenshot with number 3. The first is the efficiency during the test given in the GFLOPS block — in our case it was 152-153 GFLOPS , so it should be assumed that it was stable and our cooling works without problems. The second important issue to pay attention to is the CPU temperature set by HWiNFO64. We are only interested in the value from the «Maximum» column, because after the end of the LinX test, the processor immediately drops the temperature significantly, and reading the current «Current» value will not give us anything interesting. During overclocking, it is worth monitoring the temperature readings — the processor (Tdie) and making sure that it does not reach more than 75 degrees. As you can see, it was only 63 degrees in our case, so the potential is certainly there (the processor we use is a Ryzen 7 1700X and the cooler is a Noctua NH-D14). So, we can start the first overclocking attempts…

Overclocking without increasing CPU voltage

The first step I recommend is to see how much you can actually increase the CPU clock speed without increasing the voltage. To do this, click the up or down arrow, as in the screenshot. After every 25 MHz increase in frequency, it is recommended to perform stability tests with the LinX application, but initially it can be increased immediately by 100 MHz or even 200 MHz to save time. If the processor becomes unstable, the LinX application will throw an error (the bar will turn red and the test will be aborted). Then reduce the frequency by 25 MHz and repeat the test. nine0021

In our case, the maximum stable frequency without increasing the power supply of the processor was 3700 MHz, which means that the clock frequency was increased by 8%. This resulted in an increase in performance from 153 GFLOPS to 160 GFLOPS, i.e. by about 5%. The maximum temperature was 67.5 degrees, which means an increase of about 4 degrees, but they are still safe values. We can continue…

Overclocking with CPU voltage increase

Since we have already set the maximum stable processor frequency without increasing its supply voltage, we can proceed to the last stage — increasing the voltage. AMD Ryzen Master defaults to 1.35V and AMD recommends not to go over 1.45V. However, it often happens that increasing it above 1.4V no longer produces tangible results and we don’t get anything else and the processor is it just gets too hot. This was exactly the case with our Ryzen 7 1700X model, which peaks at 3850 MHz at 1.4V. 1.45V no longer produced any positive result. We increase the voltage using the «Voltage Control» option marked in the screenshot below, located under the panel used to increase the frequency. As a result, the maximum temperature of Tdie stopped at 72. 1 degrees Celsius. LinX performance was estimated at 163 GFLOPS, which is a 7.2% increase over the original 152 GFLOPS. nine0021

In conclusion…

Although the gains from overclocking AMD Ryzen processors will not be as impressive as with Intel processors, it is certainly worth a try. AMD has made this task much easier with the release of the Ryzen Master app. We also know that Ryzen processors don’t always match the game performance of Intel devices, and overclocking can reduce that difference. You don’t need a very sophisticated CPU cooler to overclock the popular AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, for example, just the usual BOX cooler that AMD ships with it, although in this case we would recommend limiting overclocking without increasing the CPU voltage. If you increase it, it will be quite hot and much louder than in the factory settings. Of course, a lot also depends on the case in which our computer is assembled and which provides interior ventilation. Finally, I’d like to offer one piece of advice: if you’re planning on getting into overclocking, the main feature is patience and very thorough stability testing after the Ryzen boost. LinX offers a very good stability tester here and if you want to be at 99% are confident that your computer will not harm you later during important tasks such as playing on your favorite network, testing stability for several hours (for example, 500 times of the LinX test and not only 10). Ukrainian developer Yuri Bubliy, also known as 1usmus, has released the final version of ClockTuner for Ryzen (CTR), which helps owners of Zen 2 (and in the future Zen 3) processors to optimize power consumption and frequency settings for the capabilities and individual characteristics of a particular chip.

This utility is required because each processor is not carefully calibrated at the factory — the same average values ​​are set for all, which may be far from optimal. nine0021

CTR automatically classifies the CCX blocks by quality and individually selects the maximum frequency for each of them.

CCX (Core CompleX) is one of the structural units of the processor, which can include up to 4 cores, caches and other related modules. The Ryzen 3000 series line has products where the number of CCXs can range from 1 to 16 (Threadripper 3990X).

However, with such a powerful tool as overclocking using CCX, most users (95%) will have no idea what frequency to set for each CCX and what voltage should be. Processors with four CCX or more can shock the novice enthusiast.

Since this is all a huge problem for many, and the processors are not used up, I came up with the idea to create software that can help users easily and easily get free performance, if any, of course.

The program managed to increase the processor performance by 10.3% (7974 points in Cinebench R20 versus 7191 in stock), while reducing the voltage to 1.25 V (was 1.283 V).

Since the utility selects the parameters for each processor individually, the results in each particular case will be different.

Optimization via CTR provides a smaller performance boost than traditional overclocking, but it is much safer for the processor and incomparably easier — selecting the right parameters manually is much more difficult and requires specific knowledge. nine0021

The PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) system built into modern Ryzen processors gives comparable results, but tends to set a higher voltage compared to ClockTuner.

Supported processors include all current Zen2 desktop models — Ryzen 3, 5, 7, 9 and Threadripper 3000 and 4000 series. Ryzen 3000G series models with integrated graphics are not eligible as they use the Zen+ architecture. Notebook processors are also not supported.
