This was the custom gaming PC case mod with Corsair 380T MATX portable case to promote the launch of Homefront the Revolution PC game release. This is the portable gaming PC mod I created as a giveaway to promote the release of Homefront: The Revolution game. An open world first-person shooter PC game developed and published by Deep Silver Dambuster Studios. My task was to achieve a look and feel of the KPA military field equipment. It’s rugged shell consists of machined and handcrafted parts. The stealth angular look was inspired by the APEX off-road vehicles. I used the square tubing from the military drones as it’s legs. The resistance scratched off the KPA/APEX logos and spray painted it with their tags and symbols. The case was based upon Corsair’s 380T chassis. It’s unique side panels were very complex to design. The front LCD is a removable smartphone that monitored the system inside. I had a friend create the app for the phone. We offered it as free download during the giveaway campaign. Somebody remarked, «It looks like a Steampunk Dung Beetle» and that’s how I describe it today.

PC Case — System Unit

The PC case is an important element on which all its devices are attached and protect them from environmental influences.

Types of PC cases

PC cases are divided into two groups:

desktops (horizontal) — Slim-Desktop and Full-Desktop;
towers (vertical) — Mini-Tower, Midi-Tower, Full-Tower.

Desktops ( D esktop)

This type of enclosure accommodates 2 to 3 5.25″ devices horizontally and 2 3.5″ devices vertically, one of which is externally accessible. The disadvantages of this case is that they take up a lot of space in the workspace. Also sometimes there are problems with the cooling of the processor. The thing is that the time of these buildings is already passing. The first computers were on desktop-type cases.

Mini-Tower is the smallest type of tower. The cooling of the components inside such a case is rather poor and it is better to use this case for office computers.

Midi-Tower is a medium-sized case. Ideal for home computer. A sufficient number of fans can be installed in such a case to ensure good cooling of computer components.

Full-Tower — large tower. Ideal for gaming computers. In such a case, you can safely hold 2 powerful video cards and are not afraid that they will overheat.

PC Chassis Key Features

Form Factor

Specifies the maximum motherboard size that can be installed in this chassis.

Cases come in several form factors — mATX, miniITX, ATX, E-ATX, XL-ATX. They match the form factor of the motherboard. Before buying, check that the form factor of the case and the motherboard match.

Size for video card

Very often, novice users, when assembling their first computer, are faced with the problem that the video card does not fit into the case, or rather rests on the hard drive bay. Whatever you get into such a situation, look at the characteristics of your video card for its length. Modern video cards can be up to 300 mm long and not every case can accommodate it.

Cooling system

The case must provide good cooling to all components of the system unit. On a good case, it should be possible to install fans on all walls of the case (front, back, side, bottom, top).

For a home computer, it is enough that the case has one fan installed on the front and rear panels. It is better if one of them is 120mm in diameter. This arrangement of fans provides a draft in the case and removes excess heat.

For a gaming PC, you need to install large fans in all possible places. Gaming computers get very hot and need good cooling.

Chassis connectors

Chassis front panel must have 2 or more USB ports and headphone and microphone inputs. This makes it easier for you to work on your computer. No need to reach for the back of the case to connect a USB flash drive or headphones.

Bays

Enclosure must have bays for 3.5” and 5.25” devices. Such compartments are almost always enough with a surplus on any case. If you have one or two hard drives and a drive in your computer, then don’t worry about the presence of bays.

Power supply included

Many manufacturers sell chassis with power supplies already installed. On the one hand, this is convenient, but the quality of such power supplies is not always good. Buying a good case with a good power supply will be quite expensive. It is better to buy a case without a power supply, and buy a power supply separately. It will be cheaper and better quality. Body material and thickness

The bodies are made of aluminum and steel. Aluminum cases have better thermal conductivity and are quite expensive. Cases made of steel are more common due to lower cost. Do not overpay for the material — buy steel cases.

The thickness of the case is of great importance. Thin cases (thickness 0.5 mm) provide poor sound insulation. If possible, buy cases with a wall thickness of more than 0.5 mm.

It is very good if the places for fixing the hard disk and the drive have rubber pads. This provides better noise isolation by dampening vibration from the hard drive and drive.
