Video cards from Inno3D rarely appear in our testing, but such a visit never goes unnoticed. Not least thanks to the original cooling systems, which are remembered for their power and dimensions.
In this review, we will talk about the modification of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, which occupies a pre-top position in the manufacturer’s lineup, since although it received a proprietary HerculeZ cooler, it is not in the most efficient X3 modification. That is, with three, not four turntables (without an additional fan on the side). Otherwise, the Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 X3 stands out for its very high factory overclocking, LED backlighting and a good bundle.

- 1 x HDMI 2.0b;
- 3 x DisplayPort 1.4.
Simultaneous monitor connection is limited to four video outputs with a maximum resolution of 7680 x 4320 at 60 Hz.
Appearance and element base
Video card Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 HerculeZ X3 is made on the original printed circuit board in black with a matte finish. The logic of the location of key components is quite familiar: all memory chips are soldered around the graphics core, and the components of the power subsystem are located on the right side of it. As for the element base, it included solid-state and tantalum-polymer capacitors, as well as chokes with a ferrite core.
The model is powered by an enhanced seven-phase circuit, where six phases are responsible for powering the graphics core, and one is for the video memory subsystem. Recall that the reference video card works according to a six-phase scheme (5 + 1).
The uP9511P chip is installed as a PWM controller, which is also used on the reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. 6- and 8-pin) located on the side of the board. In turn, the reference version manages only one 8-pin connector. Note that the cooler interferes with disconnecting PCIe cables.
To ensure the operation of NVIDIA SLI technology on Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 X3 , two connectors are used to connect the corresponding bridges.
The reverse side of the printed circuit board, initially covered by the base plate, is almost completely devoid of significant elements, with the exception of the tantalum-polymer capacitors mentioned above and the PWM controller.
The adapter is based on the NVIDIA GP104-400-A1 graphics chip, which is manufactured using the 16nm process technology. It consists of 2560 CUDA cores, 160 texture units and 64 raster units. GPU base frequency increased from nominal 1607 to 1759MHz, and dynamic — from 1733 to 1898 MHz.
The memory of the Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 HerculeZ X3, with a total capacity of 8 GB, is composed of eight GDDR5X chips from Micron, which operate at an effective frequency of 10408 MHz. Recall that the benchmark is 10008 MHz. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out through a 256-bit bus, which is capable of transmitting 333.1 GB of information per second (320 GB / s in the reference version).
In conclusion, we would like to draw your attention to the LED lighting system. It automatically and gradually changes its color depending on the fan speed: from green at low frequency to red at maximum. Thus visual illumination indicates the load level of the GPU.
Cooling system
The total length of the video accelerator with the Herculez X3 proprietary cooling system installed is 302.2 mm according to the company’s official website (300 mm according to measurements in our test laboratory). And the width reaches two and a half expansion slots.
The cooler itself consists of a massive two-section radiator, the design of which uses 59 and 62 nickel-plated aluminum plates, three axial fans with an impeller diameter of 95 mm and a plastic casing with metal plates that covers the entire structure from above.
The turntables used are Colorful CF-12915S models based on plain bearings. The rated voltage of their operation is 12 V, and the current strength is 0. 35 A.
Five copper heat pipes are used to distribute heat more evenly over the entire area of the radiator: two 8 mm and three 6 mm. They are covered with a layer of nickel, which serves to prevent the oxidation of copper during operation and the subsequent drop in heat transfer efficiency.
The elements of the power subsystem are in direct contact with the main radiator using a thermal pad.
In turn, a separate low-profile radiator is used to cool video memory chips.
With automatic fan speed control, in the maximum load mode, the graphics core heated up to 74°C, and the cooler worked at 90% (1388 rpm) of its maximum power. According to subjective sensations, the noise was very quiet and practically did not stand out against the background of other components.
For comparison, let’s recall that the WINDFORCE 3X cooler of the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming Premium Pack 8G provided a temperature of 67°C at a slightly higher GPU frequency (1987 vs. 1962 MHz). In turn, the DirectCU III video accelerator ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING OC also showed higher efficiency (69 ° C), but at a slightly lower GPU frequency (1911 MHz).
When running DOOM (2016) at 4K resolution, the GPU temperature rises to 75°C and the fan speed does not change. Accordingly, the noise remains at the same level.
The WINDFORCE 3X cooler in a similar mode reduced the GPU temperature to 63°C, but its frequency was slightly lower (1987 versus 2000 MHz).
In the maximum fan speed mode, the GPU temperature dropped to only 72°C. This is due to the fact that the speed of their rotation increased by only 10% — from 1388 to 1552 rpm. Therefore, it is not surprising that in this mode the video card remained very quiet.
In turn, WINDFORCE 3X and DirectCU III in this mode showed much higher efficiency — 52° and 58°, which is explained by higher speeds of rotation of their fan blades — 3207 and 3587 rpm, respectively. That is, the cooler in the Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 X3 model is clearly optimized for quiet operation, and not for high performance.
In the absence of load, the frequencies of the graphics core and memory were automatically reduced, allowing to reduce power consumption and heat dissipation of the video accelerator as a whole. In this mode, the temperature of the GPU did not exceed 35°C, since the fans stopped spinning altogether, and the cooling system worked in a completely passive mode. The cooler switched to active mode after the GPU temperature reached 52°C.
In general, the cooling system of Herculez X3 proved to be worthy, and in fact it is the quietest among all coolers of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 versions tested by us at the moment. You can hardly distinguish the noise of the video card against the background of other components, and taking this into account the fact that the cooler has to work on cooling the overclocked graphics core. A similar effect was achieved thanks to the installation of three low-speed turntables, the rotational speed of which does not exceed 1552 rpm.
However, one drawback was noticed: a slightly noticeable whistle of the throttles at full load on the video card in the MSI Kombustor benchmark. Perhaps this is a feature exclusively of our test instance.
System requirements and computer selection for Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacy is a role-playing game set in the Harry Potter universe of JK Rowling’s books by Avalanche Software. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of 19th century magic and the famous school of magic — Hogwarts. Try on the image of a wizard or sorceress, master a wide variety of spells, learn potions, and meet fabulous creatures in the open world.
Story
The game will take place long before the beginning of the book story and the birth of most of the familiar characters, but we will meet some at a very young age. Becoming a student of the school of magic, the player finds out that his character is the key to an ancient secret that can destroy the known world. The inner magic is so strong in the hero that he will start his training right from the 5th year.
The plans of the dark magicians are to plunge the world into darkness and subjugate it to themselves. Only the main character can prevent this. To do this, he needs to master all the intricacies of witchcraft and make true friends who will help in adventures.
Game trailer
Gameplay
Having created a character, the player will find himself in an open world, but he will not be able to do something of his own right away. Having chosen a faculty, the student will have to attend compulsory classes, where he will have to learn new things in order to resist opponents.
By learning different types of spells, both peaceful and combat, the player will discover additional possibilities. So, for example, the levitation spell will allow you to reach inaccessible places, and the protective sphere will cover yourself and your allies from fire.
Brewing potions is another exciting part of the gameplay, where you need to not only collect ingredients, but also grow them yourself. The game will have a kind of refuge room where you can brew potions, grow plants and craft items. The room is also fully customizable and will reflect the role played in places.
Having established friendly relations with students, you can take them with you on adventures, and having acquired opponents, you should be prepared for all sorts of dirty tricks. Some minor characters have their own storylines, which makes it possible to build romantic relationships.
Combat system
The hero’s opponents will be both a variety of fairy-tale creatures and bands of wizards who meet outside the walls of Hogwarts, and hordes of goblins will be the main enemies. Before you go into battle, you should hone your skills in sparring and dueling within the walls of the school.
The more spells learned, the more opportunities in the fight with enemies: they can be combined with each other to catch opponents by surprise and impose additional debuffs on them. Among the spells there will be forbidden ones, here the player himself decides on the appropriateness of their use.
In battle, you can use additional items from scrolls to the mandrake root, which will stun enemies. Also, it will be possible to crack down on opponents secretly or avoid a collision altogether.
Character development system
The development of the hero’s skills will take place during lectures and when passing tests, the experience for which will allow you to master additional skills. In total, there are five skill trees in the game that will significantly affect the gaming experience.
A system for creating items is also provided: they can not only be improved and endowed with different properties, but also change their appearance, creating from scratch. Potions will also have an effect on the character: both beneficial and negative.
Open world
The open world will be large and full of secret locations, which will be difficult to penetrate without fulfilling all the necessary conditions. It will be possible to explore the castle-school itself and all the surrounding territories, some of which are recognizable from books and films. To do this, you need to master unique spells.
The game world offers exploration on foot, on a broom or on a tamed pet. The surrounding lands are not only a gloomy forest, there will be a variety of locations and even settlements where the hero will be able to trade in local shops, acquiring new items and improvements. The open world will change as you progress through the game: from the time of day to the seasons.
Open-world has been drawn in detail based on the available lore (books, movies), and some locations with rooms will be immediately recognizable. All this further emphasizes the atmosphere of a fantasy world.
System requirements
Hogwarts Legacy requirements are not yet approved and may change at any time. Based on the Steam data, the suggested setups could be as follows.
The minimum system requirements for a PC are a kind of threshold for entering the world of magic. It will allow you to play at low settings, but, alas, it will not convey all the beauty of a fantasy RPG.
