The launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC clearly didn’t go according to Rockstar’s plan. Some players cannot even start the game, not to mention freezes for those who managed to get beyond the main menu.

While Rockstar is getting off with routine phrases and tinkering with patches, we collect known game problems in one article and tell you how to get rid of them. Some of them seem to be related to the Rockstar launcher. Of course, no one guarantees 100% success, but trying is not torture.

Checklist before launch

Let’s start with the basics. Before you turn to narrow-profile solutions, try the following steps. Sometimes the simplest actions are the most effective.

• Update Windows (10-ku to 1903).
• Update video card drivers (Nvidia, Radeon).
• Update libraries (DirectX, Visual C++, Net Framework).
• Reinstall all apps that use the in-game overlay (like Discord, Geforce Experience, EGS, Rockstar Game Launcher, Rockstar Social Club, and more).
• Make sure that the path to the game, launcher and Rockstar Social Club does not contain Cyrillic.
• Check the integrity of the downloaded files in the launcher.
• Add launcher files and paths to the game, launcher, and Rockstar Social Club to antivirus and firewall exceptions (Defender and Windows Firewall, this also applies). Or temporarily disable these applications while playing.
• Set the launch options to «as administrator» for the game, launcher, and Rockstar Social Club. You can also try «Disable Full Screen Optimization».
• Verify that the game being run is using the discrete graphics card and not the integrated graphics card in the graphics card control panel.
• If you have a laptop, set the power settings to «Maximum performance».
• Update the launcher (exit and restart to check for updates).
• Delete your local profile information in the Rockstar Games Launcher: Settings → Account Information → Delete Profile → Delete. You will then need to re-enter your login credentials.
• Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
• Restart your computer.
• Make sure that there are no unnecessary processes and programs running on the system besides the game, launcher and Rockstar Social Club.

If these steps do not work for you, try specialized solutions.

«Unforeseen error»

The most common and known problem when starting the game. Some players were helped by the first patch, but others, unfortunately, were not.

If the steps in the checklist didn’t work for you, try this.

• Disconnect the controller and other peripherals. Or disable gamepad support in Steam: Library → RDR2 → Properties → Steam Input Settings for individual games (requires restarting the game) → Forced. off
• Update your motherboard BIOS. AMD users may benefit from downgrading to 1.0.0.2 if your motherboard does not support the new 1.0.0.4 firmware.
• Deleting all folders in My Documents\Rockstar Games\RDR 2 helped some players.
• One player was helped by changing the size of the virtual memory paging file: «Control Panel» → «System» → «Advanced system settings» → «Advanced» → click on the «Performance» settings → «Advanced» → «Change» in the «Virtual memory» section → for the disk on which you have the game installed, set the «Size to system selection» option and restart your computer.

• Remove programs such as Sonic Suite 3 that are responsible for managing sound on your computer.

Freezes, freezes, frame rate drawdowns

The PC version of RDR2 is notorious for unstable frame rates even on machines that fully meet the recommended system requirements. Nvidia said that even their top-end RTX 2080Ti would not run the game at maximum settings. Therefore, do not immediately try to twist the settings to «ultra», but carefully try different ones, watching the frame rate change.

If you are sure that your hardware should be able to cope with the settings you have set, try setting borderless windowed mode or switching API in the graphics settings.

The following worked for a Micro user: in the Rockstar Games Launcher settings, click on Red Dead Redemption 2. Next, write «-USEALLAVAILABLECORES -high» in the launch options line without quotes.

In Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings in settings.xml find the line «asyncComputeEnabled value=»false» /» and change «false» to «true».

Rockstar Games official solution : In the Rockstar Games Launcher’s game launch options, type the unquoted «-cpuLoadRebalancing» option. Please note that third-party processor core monitoring programs like BES and Lasso should be disabled.

Game is CPU intensive

Players have noticed that the processor load, when viewed in the «Task Manager» or a special program, reaches 98%. The game may not be using multi-core processors correctly, distributing the load unevenly.

To fix it, start the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), right-click on the rdr2.exe process → «Set Map» → check only «CPU 0» and «CPU 1». Or download a processor core monitor that lets you customize how your application uses cores.

How to remove the mouse cursor

If your Windows cursor does not disappear while playing a game, try the following methods.

• Change the mode from full screen to windowed in settings or press Alt + Tab.
• Restart your computer (yes, it still works sometimes!).
• Reinstall all applications that use the in-game overlay (like Discord, Geforce Experience, EGS, and others). Launch the game from Rockstar Social Club.
• Make your Windows account an administrator: Win + R → type without quotes “netplwiz” → + «Properties» → «Group Membership» → «Other» → «Administrators» → apply and restart the PC.
• Try disabling unnecessary peripherals such as gamepads while playing.
• Epic Games Store owners may benefit from deleting the launcher overlay files. In Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\Launcher\Portal\Extras\Overlay make copies of «EOSOverlayRenderer-Win32-Shipping.exe», «EOSOverlayRenderer-Win64-Shipping.exe», «EOSOVH-Win32-Shipping.dll» and «EOSOVH-Win64-Shipping.dll» to another folder and delete the originals. For other games from the store, return the files to their place.

«Activation required»

Some players get an error on launch, as if the game was not purchased. To fix it, try logging out of the launcher and logging in again.

Endless downloads

If the downloads in the game do not finish in any way, then try disabling vertical sync. It helped some players.

Set the video card control panel to default settings.

Game crashes

If the game crashes after launch or after some time, try these methods:

• Windows 10 users can try installing the Media Feature Pack.

• Launch the game in safe mode from the Rockstar Game Launcher. Do not enable HDR and set the graphics settings to minimum. Do not use the reboot from the settings menu, as the game will start again in safe mode. Exit the game through the main menu and start it again. Now you can set the graphics settings that are convenient for you.

• Rollback to the previous 441.08 Nvidia driver helped one player.

• Nvidia owners can delete the amdvlk64.dll driver in Windows\System32 (thanks to Aleksey Tishkov for the tip).
• Set the rdr2.exe process to High in Task Manager. This will need to be done after each launch of the game. To automate the process, download and set up Lasso.
• Try setting a different frequency for your monitor in Windows settings.
• Rockstar support advises deleting the rdr2.exe file in the game folder, running the launcher as an administrator and checking the integrity of the files, then launch the game.
• Egor Penushkin got rid of crashes by changing the resolution to less than 1920×1080 and playing in windowed mode.

Try deleting the graphics settings config file in My Documents\Rockstar Games\RDR 2.

Rockstar Games Launcher «can’t see» game

For buyers of the Steam version, the Rockstar launcher may «not notice» the game, and no scans will help. To solve the problem, run the Steam client as an administrator.

«Unable to launch game, please verify your game data»

Try turning off all devices in the «Control Panel» → «Sound» except those that are by default (marked with a green checkmark). Also turn off any software sound enhancements, as in the example in the picture below.

Resolution cannot be changed

It may happen that the option to change the resolution is blocked in the settings, or the game starts at the wrong resolution.

Open the Rockstar Games Launcher settings and click on Red Dead Redemption 2 in the installed games section. Next, write in the launch options line the values ​​without quotes «-height Y -width X», where Y is the vertical component of your resolution, for example 1080, and X is the horizontal component, for example 1920.

Customize graphics through Nvidia Experience or change system.xmlg settings in My Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\System. After making edits, set the read-only attribute for the file.

Card problems

If the markers on the map start behaving strangely, try deleting the system.xml file with the settings in My Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\System, or switching the game resolution to another and back, or change the API.

Error ERR_GFX_STATE

Players began to experience this error after the November 13 update. In Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings, delete all files starting with «sga_». After that, load the old save, go to the new location and make a new save there.

If the above method did not work, try the next one.

• Download Nvidia Profile Inspector, a program similar to the Nvidia Control Panel, but with more advanced settings.
• Download profile for game with 441.12 drivers.
