Something to take note of though is that the both graphics card have the 8GB memory. The RX Vega 56 and gtx 1070 are also available in the lower tier 4GB model, however we’re not looking at that here.
PERFORMANCE
For the testing I’m using the GIGABYTE Radeon RX Vega 56 and GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming graphics cards, and while both were tested with out of the box settings. Expect slightly different results with different models.
The system that I’m testing with has an Intel i7-6950K CPU @ 4.0GHz in an MSI X99A Gaming Pro motherboard, along with 32GB of RAM running at DDR4-3200 in dual channel. The same Windows 10 PRO 64-Bit were used.
AMD Drivers Used: Adrenalin Edition 17.12.2
Nvidia Drivers Used: GeForce Graphic driver 388.71
Let’s get into the results –
Battlefield 1
Battlefield 1 was tested with all settings maxed out. In terms of average FPS the GTX 1070 was about 19FPS slower than the RX vega 56 at 1080p. At 1440p, RX vega 56 was 16FPS faster than GTX 1070. As you can see, the RX Vega 56 is the clear winner here but GTX 1070 was also giving solid 60FPS with good textures.
Fallout 4
Fallout 4 was tested with the built in benchmark using ultra settings. At 1080p, GTX 1070 was 9FPS ahead of the RX vega 56, while RX Vega 56 take the lead at 1440p with 3FPS.
Far Cry Primal
Far Cry Primal was tested in campaign mode rather than multiplayer, as it’s easier to consistently reproduce the test run. Both cards were providing a playable experience at 1080p and 1440p resolutions. But in terms of average FPS, the RX Vega 56 was leading in both resolutions.
Gears of Wars 4
Gears of Wars 4 was tested using the built in benchmark with ultra settings, and there was basically no difference between the two when it came to average frames.
GTA 5
GTA 5 was also tested using the built in benchmark with high settings. The average frame rates were not close together in this game, however GTX 1070 was leading in both resolutions.
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Rise of the Tomb Raider was tested using the replay feature with the exact same replay on both graphics cards. In this test RX Vega 56 was coming out ahead of the 1070 at both resolutions. At 1080p, the RX Vega 56 was just 1FPS ahead and 6FPS ahead at 1440p.
The Divison
The Divison was tested with the built in benchmark at ultra settings. Again, RX vega 56 was performing good in both resolutions. As you can see, GTX 1070 was able to give playable fram rates.
Witcher 3
Witcher 3 was also tested using the built in benchmark with ultra settings. This seems to be more of a graphically intensive test, and the RX Vega 56 was coming out ahead at both resolutions. At 1080p, RX Vega 56 was 7FPS ahead of the 1070, and 6FPS ahead at 1440p.

Which graphics cards are better?
AMD RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 are suddenly great buys — Amd
Tiffany Garrett
Amd
The AMD RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 have never set the PC gaming world on fire. As good as they were on their own, compared to what NVIDIA had to offer in their range, they were always a bit of a shadow. Vega will soon be replaced by Navi, AMD’s new 7nm architecture, and Vega cards will be brought out to pasture.
This, coupled with the need to get rid of old stock, is a very good opportunity for PC builders. Vega 56 and Vega 64 are now available brand new at a very attractive average price, making them a lot easier to recommend.
Cost-effective graphics card
Powercolor Red Dragon Vega 56
Suddenly great value
With Navi coming and some price cuts, the Vega 56 has become a really strong midrange card for those looking for performance on a budget.
how to enable fortnite xbox cross platform

- $418 at Walmart
Some cards are indeed affordable
There are some caveats, not least that your location will matter. In the US, prices seem to be slightly higher everywhere than in the UK, for example. But assuming you’re happy with the selected versions of the Vega graphics cards, you can get a solid bundle for a great price.
There is a couple worth highlighting. The first is the Powercolor Red Dragon Vega 56, which is now $300. That’s $50 less than NVIDIA’s new RTX 2060 list price, not to mention ray tracing, the Vega 56 can compete with NVIDIA’s card, outperforming it in a number of games. But for $300, this is a really good graphics card. A similar card from XFX can also be bought for the same money.
If you’re happy with the open box, now it’s worth highlighting another MSI Air Boost Vega 56 available from Newegg for just $247. Frankly, this is an absolute steal for a card with one of the highest clock speeds you can find on the aftermarket Vega 56. Air Boost is also a popular buy across the Atlantic, sold by eBuyer in the UK. new to £240.
Get free Xbox Game Pass time on PC with the new Vega 56 or Vega 64.
Vega 64 price cuts are a bit rarer in the US, but in the UK you can get the reference design from Powercolor for just £320. Less than the current price of the RTX 2060, although it outperforms it in most cases (again, not counting ray tracing).
And don’t forget, AMD’s current Vega lineup is included in the free Xbox Game Pass for PC deal as an extra sweetener.
But are they really worth it?
Buying something because it’s cheap doesn’t make it a good buy. But when it offers good performance and a low price, it suddenly becomes good value for money. In fact, this is where we are now with Vega graphics cards. In both cases, you’ll get consistent frame rates and rich detail at 1080p and 1440p, albeit from a more power-hungry card than NVIDIA’s equivalents. Power consumption is perhaps the biggest reason against getting one.
I just bought a £299 Vega 64 reference design card here in the UK and it requires two 8-pin power connectors with a higher TDP than the NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti without providing 1080 Ti performance levels. If you don’t have a PSU with at least 650W, more like 750W for Vega 64, the value will suddenly disappear.
But assuming it’s a direct jump to your system, it’s still a great choice. The Vega 56 and Vega 64 were never truly bad GPUs, but a combination of many factors made them hard to recommend to anyone other than die-hard AMD fans. Prices skyrocketed during the cryptocurrency mining phase in 2018, and even now, some options in different stores are so expensive that they will never be sold to anyone who can perform a simple search on the Internet.
This is pure performance. Ignoring what you can get from a comparable NVIDIA graphics card, the Vega cards deliver solid performance. Games can look nice and run at high frame rates, and now at really good prices if you can get the ones that sell cheap. And all of this before you think about undervolting or overclocking to unlock a bit of extra performance.
Ultimately, this is the conclusion. For mid-range money, you can pick up former high-end AMD graphics cards, and they’re certainly worth it if you can get one for the low price.
