BIOS Update

As we mentioned above, if you do decide to go down the route of getting an older 300/400 series board, then you are going to have to perform a BIOS update. For now, anyway.

A chipset, for those wondering, is a set of electronic components on an integrated circuit that helps the data flow between key hardware components such as CPU, RAM, GPU, and so on. Motherboards are usually paired into specific chipsets and loosely reference the board’s general makeup.

For example, a B450 & X470 differ in the number of available ports they have and PCIe SLI support.

There are loads of different chipsets; however, the ones that are backward compatible with Ryzen 3000, and the only ones relevant to this “best of” guide are as follows:

These are all compatible with Ryzen’s latest lineup. However, they will require a BIOS update. The only boards that DO NOT require a BIOS update are the latest X570.

With 64GB of 4,133MHz RAM supported, this board is perfect for an AMD Ryzen build. Having said that, you can still make use of the excellent features to pair this board with any of the Ryzen 3rd gen CPUs. You won’t even have to update the BIOS either. MAX means this board is already updated to the latest BIOS so you can simply pop your new chip into this motherboard without the fear of a none boot.

Unfortunately, the Gaming Plus only comes with 1 M.2 slot meaning future expansion is going to be fairly difficult if you’re looking at using multiple M.2’s. It’s easy to let them off though seeing as though it comes to shelves at such an affordable price.

AMD Ryzen 3000 Series And X570 Chipset Compatibility Quick Guide

AMD just announced their lineup for the Ryzen 3000 Series along with details regarding their new X570 chipset for the AM4 platform. They told us AM4 would be with us for a while and they were right, but unfortunately, we’ve gotten to the point that there are caveats.  This isn’t a bad thing or a dig at AMD at all, so put that out of your minds before we move further into this conversation.  AMD did announce that the AM4 socket would be supported through 2020 and so far they’re living up to that promise, but there have been a few changes in the life of the socket so far.  It started its life out supporting simple quad cores back with the 7th Gen A-Series CPUs that were Carrizo based just before the arrival of the 1st Gen Ryzen CPUs.   Then Ryzen came along offering up to 8 cores on the same socket, fundamentally changing the landscape of the mainstream platforms forever.

Now comes the next big leap with the announcement of the Zen 2 based Ryzen 3000 series on the 7nm node along with 50% more cores (for now, more to come) and still slotting right into the AM4 socket.  But, with the Ryzen 3000 series and X570 chipset, comes a major change on the motherboard side, PCIe Gen4.  This alone makes compatibility a bit dicey, and thankfully AMD has gone ahead and made a very handy chart to help you figure out what CPU is supported by what chipset.  Interestingly enough the 1st Gen Ryzen CPUs (including those with Radeon Graphics) are NOT supported on the X570 chipsets, so those with a Ryzen 1×00 series chip will need to upgrade their entire system if they want to take advantage of the platform.   But, those running Zen+ based CPUs and APUs will be in the clear.  Incidentally, X370 and B350 support for the Ryzen 3000 series CPU will be dependent upon the motherboard vendor and whether they were either forward thinking enough or they’re willing to put in the effort to make them work.

So if you are in the market to upgrade either your motherboard or CPU with this upcoming generation of products from AMD, mind this chart and plan accordingly.  Also, be sure to check for the «AMD Ryzen 3000 Compatible» sticker they’ll be putting on boxes going forward.

Form Factor

SOCK is a physical slot on the motherboard, which holds your processor at the place. Each socket works with different CPU generations, and they also differ from CPU to HEDT. This means that certain processors will only work with certain motherboards.

Since we’re targeting the best Ryzen 5000 motherboards, we only need to look at one socket: AM4. AMD promised us five years of support for the AM4 socket, and oh my god, they did. For potential buyers of Ryzen 5000 processors, this means that the next big upgrade will require a new motherboard if you buy next-gen processors from AMD as they will likely use the new socket.

As a side note, please never insert a CPU into a socket, double check compatibility when purchasing, and always align the arrows on the CPU and socket to avoid damaging anything.

Chipset — X570 or B550

One of the most important factors when choosing a motherboard is the chipset. The chipset is responsible for determining the features of your motherboard. Possibilities can be anything from power delivery, powerful VRMs, overclocking support, PCIe 4.0, overly small add-ons like Wi-Fi, 10Gb adapters, and m.2 expansion slots.

These are the features of the motherboard you are buying that you will want to pay close attention to as they are where your extra money is spent when you go for a higher end motherboard. So, for example, if you’re a budget-conscious gamer who never overclocks, chances are a $300 motherboard is overkill.

Since we’re dealing with the new Ryzen 5000 processors, the two most obvious chipsets we’ve narrowed down our recommendations to are the X570 and B550. These two chipsets are the last to be compatible with AM4, but unless you’re on a tight budget, you should always opt for the X570.

When the first B550s came out they were close in price to their X570 counterparts and made upgrading the motherboard a pretty obvious choice, but after the price cut they now offer budget builders another option. You may be interested in the B450 and X470 chipsets, which are technically compatible with the new Ryzen processors and BIOS updates are released by the manufacturers. While these older chipsets offer solid budget options, you should double check for the features and support you need.

Memory size

Whether it’s a motherboard for Ryzen 5000, 3000 or Intel processors, enough memory will give you a performance boost. With that in mind, you need to make sure your motherboard can accommodate the size of your RAM kit, the speed your RAM kit is capable of, and has enough channels to accommodate your RAM kit.

We recommend purchasing a 16GB DDR4 RAM kit to start with, and while 3000 to 3800 MHz RAM will be more than enough for your games, there is actually a sweet spot for the new Ryzen 5000 processors. which all recommendations in this list are calculated. The only downside to getting the kit so quickly will be the extra cost, so consider what you personally need and opt for something slower if fast RAM is out of your budget.

In general, the performance difference you will see at the above speeds is minimal and not cause for concern.
