I would suggest you invest in Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSDs because it’s a more durable and reliable SSD compared to Crucial P1 SSDs. You can obtain better Read/Write speed, more TBW (Terabytes Written) Though, the price is a bit more compared to Crucial P1 NVMe SSDs but it’s a good choice to invest in.

However, the P1 is also a good option for the people who are good with lesser read/write speeds. The cache storage and controller is good in Crucial P1. So, you will not regret investing in it. But, if you ask me to choose between the both, I would go with the SAMSUNG 970 Evo.

The Crucial P1 and the Samsung SSD 970 EVO are manufactured exclusively in the M.2 2280 form factor, which results in the standardized external dimensions of 22 millimeters in width and 80 millimeters in length. The interface used for the two NVMe SSD hard disks is the third-generation PCIe interface with the four lanes. While Samsung uses a 3-bit flash memory in the SSD 970 EVO series, Crucial uses the so-called QLC NAND in the P1 series, which can hold up to 4 bits of data per cell and should therefore be more cost-effective for the same capacity.

In both series, the smaller versions are also noticeably slower in some cases.

The NVMe SSDs from Crucial and Samsung are on a par with the very customer-friendly 5 years in terms of the warranty period. Nevertheless, the Samsung SSD 970 EVO allows a much higher amount of data to be written to the drive during the same period before warranty claims can no longer be made. Following Western Digital, Samsung was caught replacing components in solid state drives. Attention to the issue was attracted by the Trendy player YouTube channel from Asia, which found two different versions of NVMe drives on sale 970 EVO Plus with a capacity of 1 TB and conducted a video review of them.

The channel compared two variants of the Samsung 970 EVO Plus. The original version of the drive, which has the part number MZVLB1T0HBLR, was released in April 2021. It is equipped with a Phoenix S4LR020 controller and 96-layer TLC 3D NAND flash memory marked K9DUGY8J5B-DCK0. The new version of the SSD, which has recently appeared on sale, has a different model number MZVL21T0HBLU, is equipped with an Elpis S4LV003 controller and is equipped with TLC 3D NAND flash memory marked K9DUGY8J5B-CCK0.

The main difference between the versions was the controller. The Elpis chip migrated to the new version of the 970 EVO Plus from the younger and more productive Samsung 980 PRO series of drives, and it is focused on the PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. Therefore, support for PCIe 3.0 x4 in the new version 970 EVO Plus is implemented thanks to backward compatibility, and the PCIe 4. 0 mode is hardware-locked.

The memory in the new version of the drive is also 96-layer TLC 3D NAND, but, apparently, uses a different package. An additional difference between the 970 EVO Plus versions is the firmware. The original drive has 2B2QEXM7 firmware, the new revision has 3B2QEXM7.

Comparative tests of both versions show mixed results. For example, the new revision of the drive with the Elpis controller shows higher performance in the CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD benchmarks.

RND4K Q1T1 single stream random read speed difference is higher for the new drive — 82 MB/s versus 56 MB/s for the old version. The AS SSD test also indicates that the new version delivers faster 4K block random reads, but also higher latencies.

Another aspect is the HD Tune Pro linear recording test. The old version starts at 1750 MB/s and drops to 1500 MB/s after the dedicated 42 GB SLC cache is full. The new version of the drive starts at a write speed of 2500 MB / s and maintains it until about 115 GB of information is written, which indicates an increased amount of SLC cache. However, after that, performance sags to 800 MB / s. Apparently, the new version of the drive uses NAND crystals with a higher capacity, which reduces the degree of parallelism of the flash memory array.

In practice, the linear recording speed will depend on the size of the file being transferred. Tests of two versions of drives 970 EVO Plus were carried out when writing files of 156 GB. In this case, both versions of the SSD cope with the task in the same time. When transferring even larger files, the old version of the drive will certainly take the lead. But with a file size of less than 115 GB, the new version will be noticeably faster.

Reviewers also noticed that the new version of the drive with the Elpis controller heats up a little more during operation.

In today’s realities of semiconductor shortages, replacing components in an SSD is quite common. And as long as this fact does not have a negative impact on performance and is invisible to the end user, this usually does not create a problem. However, there are cases when manufacturers noticeably degrade the performance of their SSDs.
