    An Action Classic

Speed is a well made fantastic movie that has a great scale of action and crime.

Keanu Reeves plays a cop, Jack, that angers a former bomb squad member, Howard (played by Dennis Hopper), by foiling his plans at taking hostages. Howard decides plant a bomb on a bus. When the bus hits 50 MPH, it is armed. It does so, and now Jack has to keep this bus going above 50 MPH, or else it blows up. He also meets Annie (played by Sandra Bullock) and she does the driving, while Jack does the defending.

Keanu Reeves was awesome, and Sandra Bullock did a great job. Her character was almost like a sidekick, and Reeves had pretty solid chemistry with her. Dennis Hopper did a pretty smooth job at playing the villain, and the other cast members did a good job as well. The plot is nicely done, not confusing, and well understood. The pacing is also really nice for an 1 hr and 50 mins.

Speed is an all time classic, and it still holds up to this very day. Great movie.

Have a look at the video below of Sandra taking her mock driving test and after we’ll analyse her driving faults in more detail and explain why she got the faults.

Bear in mind that the examiner on your driving test might not think that every mistake you make is big enough for a fault.

The benefit of taking a mock driving test is to find out how ready you are to drive on your own and to experience driving test conditions. Learn from any mistakes and go on to pass the real driving test and be a safe driver.

Why did Sandra get the driving faults?

    1st serious fault at 7:18.

    Reverse park: Observations.

Before reversing, make sure that you observe all around the car including the blind spot over your right shoulder and the rear window to make sure it’s safe to reverse. Sandra missed the blind spot check here.

Check all around again before steering into the space as the front of the car will swing out which could be dangerous if there was someone nearby. Sandra didn’t check her blind spot here.

Towards the end of the manoeuvre Sandra started to stare at the side mirror for a bit too long which meant that she wasn’t fully aware of who was around her.

Apart from her observations, Sandra managed to park the car well.

    1st driving fault at 12:13.

    Use of mirrors: change speed.

You should always check your interior mirror before changing speed to see how close the vehicle is behind. If they’re driving very close then you should brake earlier.

Her 3rd driving fault was for the same reason at 17:23.

2nd driving fault at 16:09. Position / normal stops.

Always consider other road users when pulling up on the left. Is it safe, convenient and legal? Sandra pulled up near an island which made it harder for drivers behind to drive around her.

Her 3rd driving fault was for use of mirrors: change speed 17:23 (same as her 1st driving fault).

4th driving fault at 20:15. Use of mirrors: change direction.

Always check your mirrors before moving to the left, especially looking out for any cyclists.

Her 5th driving fault was for the same reason at 23:04.

The 6th driving fault was for the same reason at 23:35

7th driving fault at 27:47. Control: foot brake.

Not enough braking caused the car to roll back slightly.

8th driving fault at 28:35. Use of mirrors: signalling.

Make sure it’s safe by checking your mirrors before signalling just in case there is another road user who might prevent you from turning such as a cyclist.

    Thanks to Sandra!

Everyone who has taken a mock or actual driving test knows how scary it can be and Sandra was very brave to be filmed at the same time and for allowing us to publish the video on YouTube to help other learner drivers.

Check for lice. Benchmark Review, Part 2 — Gambling Addiction

In the first part of the article (see the previous issue of the magazine), we thoroughly tested the video system with the brand new 3DMark06 package and checked its stability using the Video Card Stability Test program. But do not forget that the overall performance of a computer in games depends not only on the power of the graphics adapter. The central processor calculates artificial intelligence and physics, the speed of the memory and hard drive directly affects the loading time of the levels, and without a good connection you can’t play multiplayer. No wonder it is believed that the performance of the machine is determined by its slowest component. How to find out which piece of iron it is time to change (and most importantly — what to change it to)? Benchmarks will answer this question.

And we will start, like last time, with the company’s product Futuremark PCMark05 . If 3DMark is a universally recognized standard for testing video cards, then PCMark is no less a universally recognized standard for testing the overall performance of a system. They love him primarily for clarity. The free version of the program contains 11 tests that simulate very specific tasks: starting Windows, encrypting files, encoding and decoding video, writing a file to a hard drive, reading information from RAM. While the computer is huffing over their implementation, PCMark05 monitors the state of the “internal organs” of the system and, based on the data collected, awards them one or another number of points. In sum, these points give a final score (if you have the Internet, it can be compared with the results of other users).

A significant disadvantage of PCMark05 is the need to buy the full version of the program to study the system in detail. The free version only shows the final result. The points scored by each device individually are not displayed, so you can only identify the weak link by carefully studying the “test report”.

In terms of information content, PCMark05 loses to the Lite version of SiSoftware Sandra 2005 . When you first start this program, your eyes just run up from the number of available modules. All of them are divided into several groups: «masters» combine the most important tests; «information modules» will tell everything or almost everything about each installed piece of iron and some programs; «benchmarking modules» are for testing purposes. Almost all «test» and «preview» components are not available in the free version of the package.

But the benchmarks themselves look very appetizing. Mainly because to compare the results you do not need to go online. At the end of the test, a small diagram is displayed that clearly demonstrates how much a particular device is faster / slower than the standard. Thus, you can easily determine not only the weak link of the system, but also pick up a piece of iron for a future upgrade.

There are also utilities for checking a single device. They test much more thoroughly than programs from the all-in-one category (like PCMark05). For the most part, such programs are used by serious guys from experimental laboratories and hardware magazines. But among them there are also solutions that, for all their sophistication, can help mere mortals.

RightMark 3DSound , as the name suggests, it tests sound cards. Of the three tests, we are only interested in one — the Positioning Accuracy Test. It will help to correctly place the speakers to achieve the correct surround sound (primarily for owners of 5.1 and 7.1 systems). When you start RightMark 3DSound, a circle appears on the screen, in the center of which is the listener. By moving the slider in a circle, you can adjust the direction and volume of the sound. If you set the slider, for example, to the lower left of the circle, the music should reach your ears from the back-left. This test will help you to correctly install the speakers, adjust the volume and the symmetry of the arrangement, so that the result is the highest quality surround sound.

Another «serious» utility is RightMark Memory Analyzer . This is a comprehensive set of tests of RAM, completely useless for the average user (he simply will not understand anything in all these graphs and terms). However, even in such a program there was a place for a couple of interesting tests. We are talking about checking the performance of memory and its stability. Quite understandable terms appear here: delay, speed of writing and reading data. Considering that the utility is quite common and is used by the laboratories of many hardware sites, it is easy to find test results for various RAMs on the Web and compare them with those of your system.

Stability is checked in a standard way: RAM is loaded to capacity with data, and the user at this time swallows valerian and wonders if the system will hoard or still survive. Such a test will be very useful if you need to identify the marriage of RAM.

The programs described in the article will be useful not only for those who are planning an upgrade or just want to show off their computer to their friends. They will be useful in a variety of situations: for troubleshooting, when overclocking a video card (as well as a processor and in general everything that can be overclocked), the reliability of components (the so-called «stress» tests) — you can’t list everything.
