Introduction

Sapphire is a partner and one of the largest suppliers of AMD graphics accelerators. Therefore, even if you are confident in your choice of a particular model, you should be careful when buying, since it is not so easy to understand the manufacturer’s assortment. So, for example, there are six versions of Sapphire HD 7850, similar to each other as two drops of water.

If we operate with two main characteristics — frequency and memory capacity, it is easy to find almost identical versions of the HD 7850. In my opinion, Sapphire marketers have managed to make life difficult not only for themselves, but also for customers, especially considering that even advanced users manage to confuse video cards . And I am no exception.

But if you look closely, you can find two important differences. The first is a modified casing, under it, by the way, a different radiator structure is noticeably different. The second is the updated versions containing only 2 GB of video memory on board. And on this you can pause, I did not find anything else.

Packaging and delivery set

The design of the Sapphire HD 7850 OC 2GB GDDR5 box is designed in the spirit familiar to the company’s lineup.

recommendation

Inside it is:

  • Instructions for installing the accelerator in the system unit;
  • Video card Sapphire HD 7850 OC 2GB GDDR5;
  • Power adapter Molex -> 6Pin;
  • mini DP -> DP adapter;
  • HDMI -> DVI adapter;
  • Registration card;
  • DVI->VGA adapter;
  • HDMI cable.

The kit is quite standard for a video card. It is worth noting that in my case there was no place in the box for the CrossFireX cable and the driver disk. Perhaps it was lost at a previous testing site, or such a set is supposed to be for review authors. After all, they absolutely have both the Internet and CrossFireX bridges.

Sapphire HD 7850 OC is a classic representative of the second revision of the HD 7850. A short circuit board and one power connector, a couple of fans and the same number of heat pipes. Behind the standard set of ports: one DVI, two mini DP, one HDMI. The upper part of the grille is used to remove air, but the casing does not cover the sides of the video card and only a small part of the heated air comes out through it.

PCB

The card is just a copy of the Radeon HD 7850 v2 graphics accelerator, with all its advantages and disadvantages. The density of the elements is very high. On the right side is the memory power system and PLL. They have one phase. PWM controllers are elementary, do not support the I2C protocol and do not provide the user with any voltage control levers. On the right side, four phases of the GPU power supply are vertically lined up. Coils, capacitors, microcircuits and mosfets remained unchanged. As well as the power phase controller.

The NCP5395 PWM controller is a very simple chip without I2C protocol support, which automatically prevents users from controlling the voltage by software. On the other hand, it is so simple that it is devoid of smart protection, and it will not be difficult to make a simple pencil volt mod up to 1.3 V. In general, the power system is conditionally sufficient for the purposes for which it was created.

~212 mm Pitcairn processor 2 was placed on a textolite substrate in the 5th week of 2012 and is distinguished by the inscription ENG (engineering version) in the marking. It contains 2800 million transistors and is made using the 28 nm process technology. The silicon crystal around the perimeter is protected by a metal frame. The final power phase formula is: 4+1+1 (GPU/MEM/PLL).

Eight Hynix 2 Gb memory chips soldered on the front and labeled H5GQ2h34MFR-T2C. They are designed for frequencies up to 1250 MHz (effective frequency 5000 MHz), the bus width is 256 bits.

The stock frequencies of Sapphire HD 7850 OC are 920 MHz for the graphics core and 5000 MHz for the memory.

Cooling system

The cooling system of Sapphire HD 7850 OC consists of one large part — a heatsink together with a shroud and a pair of fans.

The design is based on a combined heat sink made up of a copper base, heat pipes and aluminum fins. The GPU heatsink itself consists of several parts. The main one is a thick copper insert, two 8 mm heat pipes emerge from its center in the grooves along a U-shaped trajectory. Looking closely at the radiator and mentally dividing it in half, you can see the symmetry of the design. The thing is that it consists of two parts — right and left. A heat pipe goes from each part to the base, and in the center the whole system is connected into a single whole.

The shroud is connected to the radiator with four screws. Only now their mount is located below, and it is impossible to disassemble the system for cleaning without dismantling. Unfortunately, the area of the VRM and memory zones is cooled only by the air flowing from two fans; there are no heatsink plates for them. In theory, such an air flow should be enough for any operating mode of the video card.
