3DNews Processors and Memory AMD Processors AMD Sempron for Socket AM2 The most interesting news
We expected a little more from Sempron processors for Socket AM2, but the miracle did not happen — AMD overdid it with ratings … ⇣ Contents
Always, when a new platform is released, they try to draw the consumer’s attention to its most productive part — to «top» processors and chipsets, usually in conjunction with «extreme» memory modules and powerful 3D accelerators. But will the average buyer have enough money for such a “beast-machine”? Probably not. Yes, and not always need such a high performance with its increased power consumption. When assembling a workhorse or a multimedia center, namely, such systems are most often assembled, they do not look at high-end components at all — they choose something reliable, inexpensive and with sufficient performance. It is about a platform with such sufficient performance that we will talk today. AMD Sempron AM2
Transferring processors to the new AM2 processor socket and creating a new memory controller capable of working with DDR2 memory, AMD did not forget about budget processors. So Sempron processors officially got a dual-channel memory controller capable of working with faster DDR2-400/533/667. It is these processors that should soon replace the «budget» platforms: the official Socket 754 and the unofficial Socket 939. Imagine what and what comes to replace, in the form of tables: Sempron Socket AM2
Sempron Socket 939
Sempron Socket 754
It’s not hard to see that processors for Socket AM2 saw an increase in PR ratings at the same frequency ceiling. Apparently these ratings were calculated on the assumption that faster DDR2 memory would have a positive impact on performance. But before checking whether this will be the case in practice, let’s get acquainted with the appearance of the new processors, starting with the packaging.
The processor is supplied in a cardboard box, the usual green color. There is a window on the side through which the buyer can view the processor and its markings.
Inside the package are: a processor, an updated cooler (with a mount for AM2), a user manual and a logo sticker. AMD Sempron Socket 939 and Socket AM2 on top
Externally, the updated processor is not much different from the stones of the previous generation. From above, it is only given out by the marking, which now looks like SDA3000IAA3CN. Everything is deciphered something like this: SDA — Sempron for workstations, 3000 — processor rating, I — case type 940 pin OµPGA (Socket AM2) We will obtain more accurate information using utilities. AMD Sempron Socket 939 and Socket AM2 bottom
From below, the processor for Socket AM2 is easy to distinguish if you carefully examine the location of the legs. Did you find the extra leg? In the photo, we look at the right processor in the lower left corner — this is it. And now a complete information summary about the tested processor, obtained using the CPU-Z utility.
For comparison, here is information about AMD Sempron for Socket 939.
Well, before testing a little about overclocking. We did not succeed with overclocking on the test system, since the motherboard did not allow changing the HyperTransport bus multiplier. The result turned out to be very modest — only 1745 MHz.
But on the ASUS M2N-E motherboard, the result turned out better — the stability limit with a standard cooler of 2080 MHz. It is interesting to note that increasing the voltage on the core did not lead to anything — overclocking could not be improved, and the processor became warmer, up to 63 ° C instead of 56 ° C at the standard supply voltage.
First, we sinned on the motherboard, and now we sin on the test sample, because. The processor should have more overclocking potential and less heat.
Testing
Testing was carried out in several stages. Since the processor is intended for low-end systems, the motherboards were also selected with integrated video cards — let’s see what the acceleration of the memory subsystem and video memory will give in combination. And then we’ll move on to discrete video. Test stand:
Already the first synthetic tests show that the reduced clock speed is not compensated by faster RAM and increased L2 cache. Let’s move on to the practical application of computing power — the faster the better.
The lack of clock frequency continues to be felt — it is very clear how overclocking begins to correct the situation. Let’s move on to game synthetics and games.
No major changes — somewhere a little more loss, and somewhere a little less, but still a loss. The AMD rating system fails — a decrease in clock frequency, without major architectural changes, is hard to compensate. And yet, given that the new processors were primarily compared in terms of ratings with single-channel Semprons for Socket 754, which are slightly slower than those for Socket 939, it is possible to find some justification for the rating system. Let’s see how much the result changes when the integrated video card is disabled and a discrete one is used — install Inno3D GeForce 6600GT 128 MB GDDR3.
Replacing the video card, at first glance, did not make any adjustments, but the system on Sempron AM2 began to feel more confident in video tests.
The acceleration of graphics applications when using faster RAM is starting to be felt in SPECViewperf 9.0, but you need a powerful graphics card.
The Futuremark 3DMark packages also show graphics acceleration, but they try to put as little stress on the CPU as popular games do.
And as soon as the load on the processor increases, the results begin to tend to those obtained earlier. But before drawing final conclusions, let’s examine one more aspect — the exactingness of Sempron AM2 processors to the bandwidth of RAM. To do this, using the BIOS settings, we turned DDR2-667 into DDR2-533 and DDR2-400, and the timings were set automatically according to SPD. DDR2-400 DDR2-533 DDR2-667
The most notable jump in performance came with the transition from DDR2-400 to DDR2-533. At the same time, the first one is already quite rare on sale, and the second one is not much cheaper than DDR2-667. It turns out that if you want to save money and not lose much, the most optimal would be to use DDR2-533 modules. Pins
Summing up all the test results, we note that we expected a little more from Sempron processors for Socket AM2, but the miracle did not happen and we got a little less. AMD overdid it with the ratings — in good faith, it would be necessary to subtract 100 units from the rating from each model in order to get a real comparable result. Although there is no reason to be upset, especially if you are tight on finances, there is no serious decrease in performance, the processors will allow you to work comfortably, and if you have a good video card, you can also play. At the same time, prices for Sempron AM2 processors are traditionally affordable, faster and cheaper RAM is used, and a system assembled on Socket AM2 is open for future upgrades. We express our gratitude to PF Service LLC (Dnepropetrovsk) for the processors and motherboards provided for testing.
