    7nm Vega vs. GeForce RTX

    AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su unveiled the Radeon VII during a keynote at last month’s Consumer Electronics Show.

    AMD Radeon VII: Sleek 7nm Vega 20

    Although the Radeon VII was announced as the first 7nm GPU, it is essentially similar to the Radeon Instinct MI50 announced late last year. Of course, the Radeon Instinct MI50 is designed for HPC and Deep Learning applications, while the Radeon VII is technically the first gaming GPU for enthusiasts. Regardless, the fact remains that both cards are based on the same 7nm Vega 20 chip.

    While still based on the Vega architecture, the GPU running on the Radeon VII is not just a cut from an existing design. Improvements have been made to the GPU that not only improve rendering efficiency and performance, but also compute performance. The GPU’s dynamic clock and frequency synchronization technology is also more reliable, changes states faster, and provides more granular control over the GPU. There are benefits to being down to 7nm, including a smaller die area, which allowed AMD to upgrade its memory configuration from the Radeon RX Vega 64 while retaining roughly the same area. nine0003

    There’s a lot to talk about in regards to the new Radeon VII. Below is a quick overview of some of the main speeds and speeds of the Radeon VII compared to the Radeon RX Vega 64. Let’s take a quick look at the comparison and then we’ll dig a little deeper and see how the Radeon VII performs with various games and workloads…

    7nm allowed AMD to downsize the Vega 20 GPU from 495mm2 on the Vega 64 to 331mm2 on the Radeon VII. According to AMD, this reduction and subsequent retention of silicon die area is what allowed them to add two additional HBM2 memory stacks and increase high-bandwidth cache (framebuffer) capacity to 16GB on Radeon VII — Radeon RX Vega 64 cards have only 8 GB of memory. nine0003

    Approximately 700M of transistors separate the two GPU designs, although in terms of their actual configuration they are very similar. The Radeon VII has 60CUs and a total of 3840 active stream processors versus 64CUs and 4096 stream processors in Vega 64, but be aware that the full Vega 20 configuration has the same number of CUs and number of stream processors. The Radeon Instinct MI60 features a full 64CU configuration and 4096 Vega 20 stream processors, plus double the HBM2 memory. nine0003

    The Radeon VII has a 4096-bit wide memory interface — double that of the Vega 64 — clocked at 1 GHz (2 GHz effective). With a wide interface and clock speed, the Radeon VII offers a whopping 1TB/s (yes, terabyte) of maximum memory bandwidth, more than double that of its predecessor.

    Overall, the Radeon VII should offer better performance than the Radeon RX Vega 64 across the board. In fact, AMD claims that the Radeon VII is in the same performance class as the GeForce RTX 2080. AMD’s new Radeon VII has more frame memory, offers significantly more memory bandwidth, and peak compute performance and fill rates have been increased compared to Vega 64. This increased the maximum power of the board by a few watts — up to 300 watts on the Radeon VII — but in practice we found that the card actually consumes less power than the Radeon RX Vega 64

    The physical characteristics of the Radeon VII are understated, but, in our opinion, attractive. The design is decidedly more minimalistic compared to NVIDIA’s latest GeForce GTX and RTX graphics cards, but the Radeon VII looks good nonetheless. A brushed aluminum shroud with beveled edges covers the front of the Radeon VII, while three axial fans are evenly distributed across the front. There is also a glowing «R» die in the top corner of the card.

    The back of the card also has a brushed aluminum plate, but with linear holes cut into it to add visual impact. The GPU heatsink mounting bracket is also visible on the back of the card, along with a few screws that hold everything together. nine0003

    Under the Radeon VII shroud is a large heatsink that covers the entire front of the circuit board. The heatsink has a relatively thick copper base that sits directly above the GPU, with an array of flat copper heatpipes running from the base into a dense array of thinly finned heatsinks. There are vents on each edge of the card that allow air from the axial fans to escape the card, except for the rear edge, opposite the chassis bracket, which is completely sealed. It should also be noted that the RADEON logo on the top edge of the card is highlighted like a small «R» cube. nine0003

    The Radeon VII has two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors and its outputs consist of three full-size DisplayPorts and one HDMI port. All four outputs can be used simultaneously.

    The first batch of Radeon VII cards hitting the market should have designs similar to what you see here, and we expect AMD platform partners to come up with some custom designs as well.


    AMD Radeon VII: Benchmark setup and shader 9 performance0023

    How we set up our test systems: We tested the video cards presented in this article on a Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 Pro motherboard with a 16-core Intel Core i9-9980XE processor and 32 GB of RAM G . SKILL DDR4 clocked at 2666MHz. The first thing we did when setting up the test system was to go into UEFI, set everything to «high performance» and disable any onboard peripherals that won’t be used. The memory frequencies were manually dialed in to ensure optimal memory performance at the maximum supported CPU frequency of 2666 MHz (no overclocking), then the SSD was formatted and Windows 10 Professional x64 was installed and fully updated. When the Windows installation was complete, we installed all the drivers, games, and testing tools needed to complete our tests. nine0003

    AMD Radeon VII test in Unigine Superposition and VRMark

    The Superposition program offers a variety of test modes designed for gaming workloads and VR, with DirectX and OpenGL code paths. There is also a built-in extreme hardware stability test.

    Unigine Superposition ( Pseudo-DirectX / OpenGL Gaming )

    Unigine Superposition uses the developer’s unique SSRTGI (Screen-Space Ray-Traced Global Illumination) dynamic lighting technology, as well as high-quality textures and models to create stunning visual effects. We ran Superposition in two modes using the DirectX code path — 1080p Extreme and VR Future — to compare the performance of all the graphics cards featured here. nine0003

    And in the graph test, we can see that the Radeon VII managed to slightly outperform the GeForce RTX 2070 in the Superposition 1080P Extreme test and lag behind the RTX 2080. However, the GeForce RTX 2080 holds a significant advantage here, exceeding 20%.

    The test in Superposition’s VR Future paints a bleaker picture. In this test, the Radeon VII can’t even catch the GeForce RTX 2070, which can be had for hundreds of dollars less. (RTX 2070 cards can currently be found for less than $500)0003

    Futuremark VRMark

    Futuremark’s VRMark test is designed to test PC readiness for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets. We ran the VRMark «Blue Room» test with default settings, which is currently the most difficult test the tool offers.

    Our VRMark scores fit perfectly with the Superposition VR Future test. Once again we see the Radeon VII fall prey to the cheaper GeForce RTX 2070.0003


    AMD Radeon VII Benchmark: 3DMark Time Spy and Fire Strike

    3DMark Time Spy is Futuremark’s synthetic DirectX benchmark. It features a DirectX 12 engine built from the ground up to support cutting edge features such as asynchronous computing and multithreading. Time Spy is designed to test the DirectX 12 performance of the latest video cards using various methods and various visual sequences. This test was developed with input from AMD, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and other Futuremark Benchmark development program participants to demonstrate the performance and visual potential of graphics cards and other system resources with an almost fully managed, low-cost API. nine0003

    3DMark Time Spy (Direct X 12 Performance )

    The test in 3DMark Time Spy tells an interesting story. The Radeon VII falls behind the GeForce RTX 2070 again. However, if we look at the individual results, the Radeon VII falls victim to the RTX 2070 in Game Test 1, but thanks to Radeon’s massive memory bandwidth advantage in Game Test 2, it comes out on top.

    3DMark Fire Strike has several test modes: normal mode works at 1920×1080 resolution, extreme mode is designed for 2560×1440, and ultra mode works at 4K resolution. The target GPU framebuffer usage for normal mode is 1 GB, and the reference is tessellation, ambient occlusion, volumetric highlighting, and medium quality depth of field filter. The more complex Extreme mode targets 1.5 GB of framebuffer memory and increases the level of detail across the board. Ultra mode is specially designed for high-end and CrossFire/SLI systems and further enhances the quality. GT 1 focuses on geometry and lighting, with over 100 shadow casting point lights, 140 shadowless point lights. GT2 emphasizes particle and GPU modeling. nine0003

    This is where the AMD Radeon VII comes out ahead of the GeForce RTX 2080. The combined result of the Radeon VII fell somewhere between the GeForce RTX 2070 and the RTX 2080, but the Radeon was faster in Game 1 and 2 tests.


    AMD Radeon VII Testing: In Shadow Of War and F1 2018

    The Shadow of War delivers a ton of visual fidelity even at low quality. So, to maximize the appeal of these high-end graphics cards, we used the game’s «Ultra Quality» preset and ran the performance test routine at multiple resolutions, peaking at 4K (3840×2160). All of the game’s graphics options have been included, along with Temporal AA and Camera Blur. We have to point out that this is the latest installment in a successful series of games. nine0003

    Middle Earth: Shadow of War Performance

    AMD’s new Radeon VII outperformed the GeForce RTX 2070 at both resolutions in the Shadow Of War test, but couldn’t quite catch the GeForce RTX 2080. Radeon The VII lagged behind the RTX 2080 at 7fps at 1440p, but that fell by 3 FPS at 4K.

    Shadow Of War render time data gives a better understanding of average frame rates. As you can see, the GeForce RTX 2080 updates faster. nine0003

    DirectX 11 performance in F1 2018

    F1 2018 is Codemaster’s latest Formula One racing sim, and like the previous version of the game, it features impressive visuals with DX11 support (although the code path DX12 is currently in beta). We tested the game configured with the Ultra Graphics preset but with SSRT shadows enabled at 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 with temporal AA enabled. nine0003

    The 1440P Radeon VII didn’t fare well in this game as it fell victim to the RTX 2070 and 2080 and hung next to the GeForce GTX 1080 and RTX 2060. However, at 4K resolution, which creates a lot more demand in the memory subsystem


    AMD Radeon VII testing in Tomb Raider and Strange Brigade

    Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise in 2013 year that brings protagonist Lara Croft back to her tomb raiding roots in a deep origin story. The game, however, has been updated with new gameplay and combat mechanics. The engine has also been updated and offers DirectX 12 support as well as some amazing visuals. Test results are displayed on several cards. The game was set to the highest graphics preset of «Very High» and all graphics-related options were enabled. nine0003

    The Tomb Raider (DirectX 12 Benchmarks )

    The Radeon VII clearly outperformed the GeForce RTX 2070 in Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, but couldn’t quite catch the RTX 2080 at any resolution.

    95% frame rate at both resolutions shows the same trend: Radeon VII is inferior to the GeForce RTX 2080, but confidently outperforms the GeForce RTX 2070.

    Strange Brigade Vulkan (DX12) Benchmarks

    Strange Brigade is a third-person action game set in 1930s Egypt. She sends players on various adventures to explore the ruins, solve puzzles and find valuable treasures, as well as blow up many undead enemies. This game has both DirectX and Vulcan and also uses asynchronous computing. We tested Strange Bridge with the pre-installed Ultra GUI with A-Sync support using Vulkan at multiple resolutions. nine0003

    The AMD Radeon VII had slightly lower than expected minimum frame rates in Strange Brigade, but ended up beating the GeForce RTX 2080 at both resolutions.


    AMD Radeon VII test: FarCry 5 and Final Fantasy XV

    Then we got some test results for FarCry 5, the latest iteration of the legendary franchise. Like its predecessors, FarCry 5 is a fast-paced shooter set in an open world environment with vibrant graphics and high graphic fidelity. The game takes place in a fictional county in Montana where a cult has taken over the area. We tested all the graphics cards here at various resolutions using Ultra Quality settings to see how they fared with this newly released AAA title. nine0003

    Far Cry 5

    The Radeon VII outperformed the GeForce RTX 2080 in FarCry 5 at the settings we used at 1440p, but the Radeon VII’s massive memory bandwidth advantage allowed it to catch up and match the RTX 2080’s performance at 4K.

    FarCry displays framerate throughout and memory usage and after the test is complete, so we also recorded this information with a GeForce RTX 2080 and Radeon VII running at 4K. The cards also behaved similarly. nine0003

    Final Fantasy XV game test with the newly updated DLSS support

    Deep Learning Super Sampling, or DLSS, is one of the outstanding features of the GeForce RTX series. When using DLSS, it should offer image quality on par with the best anti-aliasing methods, but with a much smaller performance hit.

    Apparently we only have DLSS scores on GeForce RTX series cards as others don’t support this. However, the TAA numbers are comparable and they show that the Radeon VII is inferior to the RTX 2070 and 2080 and even the older GeForce GTX 1080.


    AMD Radeon VII Overclocking, Power and Noise

    We also spent some time playing with the Radeon VII WattMan driver control panel to tweak and tweak a few things and see what extra performance we can squeeze out of the card.

    As with the previous generation Vega-based Radeon, as the GPU frequency increases, the voltage increases (power and temperature permitting) based on the GPU’s current workload. With the WattMan tool built into AMD drivers, users can manually change frequencies, voltages, fan speeds, and power targets to fine-tune performance and power consumption. However, there are some additional features to consider with the Radeon VII. nine0003

    Previous generation designs used a single sensor to detect GPU temperature, and the data collected from that sensor was used to control the card’s cooling fans and throttle the GPU as needed. Together with Radeon VII, AMD has combined a network of 64 thermal sensors at strategic points across the GPU die — doubling the number of sensors found in Vega 64. Data from this array of sensors is used to determine what AMD calls «Transition Temperature» on Radeon VII, and this junction temperature data that is used to tune the power and thermal profile of the Radeon VII. AMD claims that the increased resolution and accuracy from the additional Radeon VII thermal sensors improves overall performance because junction temperature-based thermal throttling is more reliable and efficient. nine0003

    Unfortunately, all the new bells and whistles don’t seem to work well with the Radeon VII and the drivers we had available for testing. The WattMan tool built into the Radeon VII drivers offers manual tuning as well as automatic undervoltage and automatic GPU and memory overclocking. However, manually tweaking any GPU-related settings resulted in performance degradation. AMD advised us to achieve the best GPU overclocking results if we lowered the GPU voltage because the cards are running fast at power limit. However, even following their guidelines for writing, productivity always declined. Even just increasing the power setting and manually increasing the fan speed to bring temperatures down reduces performance — frankly, it didn’t make much sense. nine0003

    However, automatic memory overclocking seemed to work correctly. With automatic overclocking, we saw a memory speed peak around 1225 MHz, which is a pretty big jump.     Radeon VII’s power consumption performance is significantly improved over the Radeon RX Vega 64. While the Radeon VII vastly outperforms the Radeon RX Vega across the board, the card consumed 46W less under load. Idle power was slightly higher, but nothing to worry about.     GPU temperature under load was typically below 70ºC. The junction temperature would however hover in the high 90s, but that’s to be expected given that this number is derived from several sensors located in the hottest parts of the GPU. Perhaps the 7nm manufacturing process in the Radeon VII GPU is less forgiving at higher temperatures, and AMD should support lower temperatures, but we’re just speculating for now.


    AMD Radeon VII: results and our verdict

    Our impressions of AMD Radeon VII performance were somewhat mixed. In computing benchmarks, the Radeon VII is a strong performer. In Luxmark tests, scientific analysis and cryptography, Radeon VII became a leader in almost all areas. In the shader benchmarks, single-precision performance was competitive, but double-precision performance was off the charts, derailing other cards we tested.

    In graphics and gaming tests, the story is not so clear. Our VR-related tests showed the Radeon VII outperforming the cheaper GeForce RTX 2070. The Radeon VII also outperformed the RTX 2070 in DX12 3DMark Time Spy, although the Radeon came out on top in Fire Strike. In our gaming tests, the Radeon VII competed well against the GeForce RTX 2080 and took a couple of wins at 4K speeds, although it fell behind a few frames per second overall. Overall, the performance of the Radeon VII sits somewhere in between the GeForce RTX 2070 and RTX 2080.     The new AMD Radeon VII may not be able to compete much with NVIDIA’s current flagship, best-in-class gaming GPUs, but judging by the test charts, it still competes with the GeForce RTX 2080. The cost of two GPUs is also approximately $699, though there are also more expensive custom RTX 2070s. In that sense, Radeon VII gives AMD the opportunity to compete in the enthusiast gaming segment.
