Which are the best graphics cards?
Used video card RX 580. How I bought from a «decent» Rysk … expensive.
At the end of 2019, I decided to feel the games of the last five years. To this end, choosing for a long time, sorting through «grubs and sellers», along the top of the market with grief in half, I bought a good implementation of Polaris 20 XTR — a PowerColor RX 580 8GB video card.
The story is not five minutes long.
Judging by the description from the announcement, the card is practically new “did not fit the customer”, a year old, according to the serial number and a screenshot of the order (thrown by the seller) on E-Bay from the “officials”.
From a short telephone conversation with the seller Tatyana, I found out that the “son” was selling the card and then I talked with this same Robert. He did not arouse my distrust, and also threw off a video with a 20-minute OCCT to my request — without visible problems, but in a wildly muddy picture quality, clearly filmed on a nokia 1100-2 🙂
I made a purchase (via what’s called «secure OLX shipping») and he sent the card to me.
The card arrived frankly not the first freshness, but in a complete set and a clean box with a matching serial number. I examined it at the post office — obviously second-hand with blocked contacts, “smells” of breeding Prussians and even carries parts of these “passengers” on board, but for some reason with a seal …
I wanted to immediately refuse, but dialed the seller — he assured and emphasized that: is a decent person, he has never deceived anyone in his life and in general — who do I take him for!?? if there are problems, he will take it back within a week, applied the magic word “I swear by my mother” — he convinced me to take a chance, especially since there was not much dust in the radiator, the cooler had no backlash, and they rotate from the push clearly and for a long time … instrumentally check at the post office they didn’t give it … I freaked out and took the parcel from the post office, thereby confirming the purchase and my money was transferred to the seller via UA-pay from OLKh Delivery.
When I got home, the first thing I did was put the card into my old PC, installed the drivers and started testing it in OCCT with fixing errors — 15 minutes have passed, the flight is normal, 20 minutes — everything is stable, no errors were found, temperatures are normal ~ 74 ° C.
The problems, when we agreed to return them, started an hour later, as soon as I started to pass game tests and 3DMark — for some reason the video card did not pass some tests in the same place, as well as the Lara Croft game benchmark, the PC would freeze several times during the evening, and at the start it sometimes gave about a centimeter “checkerboard” of artifacts, which suggested that the performance of the card was a big question.
The situation was aggravated by the fact that during a complete subsequent check of the video card, it turned out that the second BIOS provided by the manufacturer marked “OS” does not function, it simply does not start on it from the off state.
Well, I think, since we agreed, I send him the card back, «a decent person,» as he called himself.
Looking ahead, he turned out to be an ordinary villain — he did not keep his word and did not take the card back, as we agreed.
I didn’t pick up the parcel, arguing that I had already spent the money and it wasn’t there . .. but maybe in a couple of days — of course I believed (no).
He finally stopped taking the phone after 8 days of storage in his department, after 8 days of storage in his department, I re-thrown the track number of the parcel, and after 10 days of storage, the parcel was sent back to me on the application «return».
The result of this scam is ~$145 lost on the purchase, and ~$10 lost on shipping in three directions.
— approximately the same content was my electronic statement on the website of the cyber police of Ukraine.
The next day, I was contacted and asked, within 10 days, to back up the electronic “dispatch” with a handwritten application signed at the local branch, provide additional data to the E-mail with the registration number of the application in the subject line of the letter, such as: screenshots of correspondence, checks of the transport company and if it is possible to record telephone conversations, he threw off the required.
I decided to wait a week with the «handwritten» one, since it was at the same time that I received the missing motherboard from Ali for assembly in a «galvanized bucket» and decided to double-check the video on another, «new» platform from Intel.
There was nothing to do, I knew what risks I was taking. Need to put the card in order and study the issue, figure out why the video card gives errors in the tests?
Not really hoping for a positive result, I turned on and launched the same tests on the new platform and lo and behold, they all ended successfully and with a normal result. This inspired me to conduct all the rest, different benches and game tests. All of them were successfully passed, even a 10-fold test in 3D-Mark for stability, almost all disciplines completed successfully with a score of 97%, except for one with a score of 88%.
I was very happy about it
ATTENTION! the results of some tests, taken from the screen
I began to find out the reason for the lack of overclocking BIOS and in parallel, thanks to caring users from both w3bsit3-dns. com and an intelligent repairman / countryman from the Youtube channel «Miners in socks», began to study the nuances of the process of «sewing and cut «BIOS — thanks to them for this.
Having sorted out the basics a little, armed with software, booted from a working BIOS and switched to a non-working BIOS after booting the system (just in case, I made a backup) — I sewed a new BIOS using the AtiFlash program to replace the non-working BIOS with a slightly lower «power limit» and frequencies of 1350 for the GPU, but with timings for memory from MICRON — I was sure that it was enough for me.
Apparently due to inexperience or because the old BIOS was not suitable for the hardware at all, but it got stuck in the process … I waited about ten minutes, no less, and forcibly rebooted
The card loaded normally and all the tests worked out stably.
I think either the seller in a hurry sewed up the wrong BIOS before shipping, or the hardware on the native, overclocked BIOS simply stopped “booting” — this is worse . .. though with the last guess it’s not entirely clear what frequencies the card took initially? (History is silent about this, apparently there are different revisions, with different memory).
Further use and temperature monitoring showed that the card is a little abnormally hot, with such powerful and extensive cooling (occupies three slots).
Under the spoiler are photos taken from the TV screen, still on the old system under AMD
ATTENTION! photo of GPU-Z at 74° and 49° without blades at idle
under load:
… and therefore, it’s time to disassemble the card, change the dried «to stone» thermal paste and finally make sure that the seller is in the trash » mined.»
As soon as I removed the cooler by unscrewing the 4 spring-loaded screws, everything immediately became clear and understandable to me — the card is really not twisted, no one climbed into it and did not boil it heavily by mining (although silicone drips from the gaskets are visible, on two chips with compound): it’s clear from the dusty halo on the cooler plane, which exactly repeats the outline of the GPU’s metal frame around the chip, and indirectly from the intact seal on one of the screws. , memory chips are cooled not fried, like this couple on the left under the spoiler
air-cooled chips before and after replacement
But there is something that got me thinking.
Almost in the center of the chip, there is an anomalous place of a fuzzy shape, clearly not corresponding in shape to the structural blocks of Polaris 20, the paste in that place dried up to an almost powdery state (I poked it with a toothpick for understanding) and clearly lost some of its thermal conductivity I scratched my turnip, traces of the paste factory, no fingerprints, and the paste from the ends of the chip is dried up — not changed … maybe some kind of clot got in during assembly? Or hard dust? In general, you need to wipe everything, apply a new paste and reassemble carefully in reverse order.
And so he did, wiped and cleaned the chip — the textolite under it is emerald turquoise, not darkened, and the structure itself is pristine light gray, not darkened into purple blue, like in overheated ones . .. only when breathing on the mirror of the chip (as when identifying a dead person), clearly one can see a faster appearance of condensate in the place of overheating and its longer evaporation from the surface in that place: it is clearly seen that the structure of the crystal during operation has slightly changed its physical properties …
In general, I smeared the MX4 thinly and assembled it.
Received not very comforting results, about the same as before ~ 74°
Temperatures for 1380 in the GPU-Z test, Fur-Mark and the EXODUS Metro game
Did not expect such a negative result , but Therefore, having driven the card in games for another week or two, I decided to climb there again and look where exactly I made a mistake.
I unscrewed the cooler and saw that I obviously piled a lot of paste: It’s good that the paste is liquid and squeezes out quite calmly, but here’s a shapeless spot, the paste dried up in a week (albeit on a slightly smaller scale), appeared very quickly again and again in the same place.
The assumption of a clot or a speck of dust had to be discarded — it is clearly hotter here than in the rest of the structure, and for some reason this “anomaly” during the loading process heats the chip so quickly that even a rather liquid MX4 is baked for hours, and almost a kilogram the cooler is not able to quickly remove this released heat.
As the most plausible answer to the question “why”, in my opinion, these are four powerful springs, “tired” of temperature and time, which, in theory, should press the cooler close to the surface of the chip and thus maintain the minimum gap between them. But they don’t do that anymore…
Indirectly, this conjecture is confirmed by the uneven drying of a thick layer of paste in the gap and the rather easy removal of the cooler — it does not stick, but somehow sags (I checked the surfaces — they are even).
Instead of conclusion — today the card is working with a diagonally propped cooler … except that I just didn’t check it with mining, otherwise I went through everything and the “metro” more than once and the “lark” and “wolfenstein”, a bunch of tedious stress tests and everything works properly both at 1350 and at 1425 (by the way, I use normal mode 100% of the time, it is quieter and colder). The only thing is that the inscription OC \ SILENT on the backplate, which has now become inverted in relation to reality).
Some graphs with and without load, for both BIOSes:
BIOS marked SILENT — in idleBIOS marked OC (coolers are configured the same only in load) months without failure.
Naturally, I did not confirm my statement to the cyber police (realizing that the result of their actions would be a whole «0»), especially since the card was not even opened, a little hot but working. As it turned out later, a card with a very poorly ventilated and heavy cooling system, which eventually sags under its own weight (if not propped up).
I took a risk out of pure curiosity, adjusted the video to the stable / final version of the platform, without taking into account further upgrades, I had no intention of chasing new equipment at all and at the same time I practically did not burn out.
Since the seller behaved, to put it mildly, a scoundrel, an unpleasant aftertaste still remained, so I give the installation — let such “decent” sellers hiccup at the word “decent” for the rest of their lives.
Well, that’s all for me, as they say — all’s well that ends well.
Think twice before buying a used video card and be vigilant, because you never know what exactly the seller will “shoe” you on, this is a technically complex product and there are “a million” opportunities for this.
They caught me on a hot)) … chip

Video cards for laptops — rating 2021
Hello everyone!
There are so many different AMD graphics cards that you can buy that sometimes it can be confusing. With inflated prices and out-of-stock items, it can be difficult to gauge performance based on price alone.
That’s why I created this list of AMD graphics cards in order of performance. You can sort the list by rendering and gaming performance or cost to find the best GPU for your needs.
AMD Notebook Graphics Card Rating
Graphics Card | Render Score | Game Score | Manufacturer Total Performance | USD | 0004
Although the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is not cheap ($649), it is currently the best AMD graphics card for the money. With 16 GB of VRAM, clock speeds up to 2250 MHz allow any modern game to run at smooth frame rates. The 4608 stream processors accelerate OpenCL-based gaming and rendering workloads, and the 300W power draw is decent for a GPU of this caliber. Best AMD graphics card under $500 The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is the best AMD graphics card you can buy for under $500. It is equipped with 2560 stream processors and has 8 GB of video memory. The base frequency is 1605 MHz and increases to 1905 MHz. While the total GPU power is officially 225W, AMD recommends a minimum power supply of 600W. Best AMD graphics card under $400 The AMD Radeon RX 5700 also comes with 8GB of VRAM, but has fewer stream processors (2304) and a lower clock speed (1465MHz base — 1725MHz boost) than the 5700 XT. It also has lower power consumption (180W total board power) and costs $50 less than the 5700XT. For those of you shopping in the $300 to $400 range, this GPU will be your best bet. AMD’s best graphics card under $200 AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT is AMD’s best graphics processor under $200. It also comes with 8GB of VRAM, which is amazing for a GPU at this price point. Its 1408 stream processors accelerate your rendering and gaming needs, and with clock speeds up to 1845 MHz, you’ll be able to play most of today’s games with smooth frame rates and medium to high settings. Target Resolution and Monitor Technology: Your First Considerations Resolution is the number of horizontal and vertical pixels that your graphics card will drive your monitor. This makes a huge difference in which card to buy and how much you need to spend when looking at a graphics card from a gaming point of view. If you’re a PC gamer, most of what you need to consider is the resolution at which the card is best suited for gaming. Nowadays, even inexpensive cards will display everyday programs at high resolutions like 3840 by 2160 pixels (aka 4K). But for intense PC gaming, these cards won’t deliver smooth frame rates. In games, the graphics card calculates position, geometry, and lighting, and displays the image on the screen in real time. The higher the level of detail in the game and the resolution of your monitor, the more graphics card power is required. Let’s consider several options. The AMD Radeon Card Lineup, Late 2021 Indeed, AMD’s 1080p and especially 1440p cards have undergone significant changes. In July 2019 at Tech Day E3, the company released the first of its long-awaited new line of 7nm Navi mid-range graphics cards based on an all-new architecture AMD is calling Radeon DNA (RDNA). The first three cards were the Radeon RX 5700, Radeon RX 5700 XT, and the limited edition Radeon RX 5700 XT Anniversary Edition. They are all aimed at the 1440p gaming market. Each indeed supports demanding AAA titles at over 60fps at this resolution. To take on Nvidia at the top, AMD Radeon took over in the first half of 2021. These RDNA 2 based cards offer the best price/performance ratio. than the company’s previous generation RDNA 1 cards, however, they still lag about a few percentage points behind Nvidia’s 30 Series Founders Edition cards in terms of design, cooling, and driver stability. In 2020, the company lifted the veil on its latest architectural update: RDNA 2. Used in both discrete desktop graphics cards and the Sony PS5 and Xbox Series X, RDNA 2 improves upon many of the elements we first saw appearing in RDNA and simultaneously expanding on a new set of features aimed at keeping AMD up to date with Big Green. This includes ray-traced compute cores and support for the Microsoft DX12 Ultimate API. Here’s a look at the first few RDNA 2 maps. AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series: Specs Compared Back in the day, we found that with the new high-end AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6800 «Big Navi» cards, both cards were able to keep up with the most big and burly Nvidia fighters like the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders. Version. However, during our benchmarking, a non-unique problem surfaced again: sometimes inconsistent frame rates in older games and occasional driver instability. We experienced lower than expected framerates in some games, and in some cases graphical glitches that broke the engines of games like PUBG. AMD has stated that it is aware of launch driver issues and we will investigate these issues over time, but at the time of this writing, Nvidia Ampere cards have provided a more consistent gaming experience in all tests we run. Totals Our comparison charts should give you a good idea of which cards you should be looking at depending on your monitor and target resolution (and budget). However, there are a few key metrics to keep in mind when comparing cards: GPU clock speed, onboard video memory (i.e. the amount of video memory) and, of course, price. AMD lists the recommended PSU wattage for each of their graphics card families. Take these recommendations seriously. |
