In honor of keeping frame rates high, we decided to rank all the major available discrete GPUs from Nvidia GeForce and AMD Radeon, starting with the fastest graphics card available and working on down. This list focuses on each company’s most current GPU lineups, and doesn’t include significantly older graphics cards. You’ll find all GeForce RTX 20- and 30-series offerings, however, as well as AMD’s last two graphics card generations.

First of all, you need to decide what you plan to do with the video card. It makes no sense to purchase high-performance models if they will be used to watch movies or play simple games. Just as it will not work to use a budget video card for resource-intensive tasks.
When choosing an inexpensive video card for simple games, you need to make sure that its characteristics slightly exceed the recommended system requirements of these same games. If we are talking about the simplest card for office work and, for example, watching movies, then you should pay attention to the presence of the necessary connectors (VGA, HDMI, Displayport) and support for as many codecs as possible so that there are no problems with different types of video files.
In the case of high-performance video cards, everything is different, and you need to approach the purchase with all responsibility. For example, when choosing a device for mining, you need to pay attention to a number of parameters. If you want to take a video card with a margin, then you should choose a model with as much memory as possible — there are already cryptocurrencies that require 5 GB. It does not hurt to study which cooling system is used in a particular model — models with 2-3 fans will last longer, although they will be more noisy. It is also worth choosing cards with a bus width of 256 or higher — this directly affects performance.
Choosing a video card for a gaming computer is also another task. Here you need to look at a lot of parameters — for example, the amount of video memory already mentioned depends on the resolution in which you plan to play. For games in 1080p, 6 GB is enough even at the highest settings, and in which case you can shrink to 4 GB. But for playing at 1440p and especially 4K, you should consider models with at least 8 GB of video memory.
It is also worth deciding whether you are interested in Nvidia technologies. If AMD has already released its analogue called FSR to increase the resolution (which also works on a large number of cards), then they don’t have an equally popular RTX analogue. If you are interested in advanced lighting and reflections, then you should definitely think about buying a «green» card.
The most basic graphics card manufacturer are those companies that develop the circuits themselves — these are Nvidia and AMD. They produce so-called «reference cards» — most often these are not the most affordable, but at the same time very balanced solutions in terms of price and quality. Designers and engineers of these companies are developing average cooling in a stylish case, but such models cannot be overclocked much.
Then there are those manufacturers who, according to the specifications of AMD and Nvidia, release their own models, sometimes even supplying them with some noticeable changes. For example, ASUS produces a whole bunch of different lines, ranging from ROG to TUF and Turbo series models, which differ from each other in design, overclocking potential and price.
If you want to buy an inexpensive gaming video card, then it makes sense to look at brands like Gigabyte and Palit — companies produce a wide range of solutions, both in the budget price segment and including the top-end hardware.
Of course, there are many other manufacturers whose equipment can be considered for purchase: MSI, KFA2, Zotac, Sapphire, EVGA and so on. The most important thing when choosing a video card from this (and, by and large, any other) vendor is to pay attention to reviews.
