In today’s post, we’ll take a quick look at the 2TB WD Blue [WD20EZAZ] hard drive, run the «required tests» and try to summarize it all.
Appearance
The appearance is standard for blue series WD drives — a white and blue sticker with basic data: capacity, model, line consumption, etc. Release date — February 2019 (the drive was bought in March 2020).
Speaking of model numbers. The WD20EZAZ is a representative of the «modern» trend of HDD construction, a disk using tiled (SMR, Shingled) recording. After the well-known scandal, WD began to indicate the recording technology depending on the model number of the disk. nine0003
What does tile recording technology provide? Manufacturers — savings, you can write more information on one magnetic disk, users — in addition to increasing the volume for the same money (theoretically, at least), problems with accidental data recording, overwriting (especially large volumes) or changing them, because when overwriting what -either tracks will have to overwrite all subsequent tracks in the «tape».
There is nothing remarkable here, so let’s not linger and move on to testing. nine0003
Test bench
Testing was carried out on a PC with the following configuration:
- Processor: Intel Core i3-9100F;
- Cooler: ID-Cooling SE-224-RGB;
- Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370 HD3P;
- RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY RGB [HX430C15FB3AK2/16] 16 GB;
- Video card: Nvidia GT210;
- Drive: 240 GB Silicon Power S80, 256 GB Smartbuy Stream E13T, 1 TB WD10EZEX; nine0036
- Body: Corsair 275R Airflow;
- Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream PRO 600W;
- Operating system: Windows 10 Pro (1909).
Software used:
- CrystalDiskMark 7.0.0h — 5 passes, random data;
- CrystalDiskInfo 8.4.2 — view SMART and basic disk information;
- PC Mark 8 2.10.901 (latest at the time of testing, Steam license) – Storage test; nine0036
- AIDA64 6.00.5200 — AIDA64 Disk Benchmark test;
- HDTune Pro 5.75 Benchmark/File benchmark;
- Victoria 5.28.
Testing
Initializing the disk.
Let’s see what CrystalDiskInfo shows us.
As we see now (stating of fact) Blue has been demoted to low-speed (5400 rpm) models, although not so long ago (however, everything is relative) there were only models with 7200 rpm.
Here and here you can see the specifications of today’s Blue series. nine0003
Also noteworthy is the support for the TRIM command, which indicates that we have a disk on the SMR. According to WD, it allows you to maintain a high write speed regardless of the degree of overwriting of the disc.
Crystall Disk Mark
CDM shows us rather high speeds of sequential operations.
AIDA64 Extreme Edition
Linear Read | Linear Write |
Random read | Random write |
AIDA draws us extreme read speeds, which is too surreal (as comrade vlo commented, the disk is empty, so nothing is read). But the record is quite adequate. At the beginning of the disc, with sequential writes, the speed value — 182 MB / s — coincides with those in CDM, and by the end it drops to 76 MB / s, which is quite a good indicator.
Random writes range from 83 to 123 MB/s, which is pretty good, since random operations have always been hard on hard drives. nine0003
And finally, a few more tests for reading from AIDA64 with different block sizes on an empty disk.
HDTune 5.75
Reading | Record |
Access time, Access when a random record is |
hdtune more torn here. But tests for access time show the same (at least in terms of reading — nothing is really read), unrealistic indicators. nine0003
PCMark 8 Storage Test
The total throughput is just over 11 MB, which corresponds to the results of a random write in CDM .
Copying data using Explorer
Let’s copy a file (42.5 GB) from the SSD to our test subject. The disk is empty, so writing to the beginning of the disk is being tested.
The speed is stable at 165 MB/s.
Half a year has passed, the disk is about 70% full. nine0003
Let’s test reading using the program Victoria 5.28
At the beginning of the disk, the read speed is 150-180 MB / s, with three sharp drawdowns, in the middle and end — even shelves of «reading» empty areas, which we saw earlier in AIDA and HDTune. In the range of 1-1.5 TB, speed indicators are kept in the region of 110-150 MB / s.
AIDA64 Extreme Edition
And here you can see that the speed at the beginning of the disk has become “real” — there is data there. Also, the average access time has become closer to real values. nine0003
HDTune 5.75
Sequential write/read of a 100 GB file, the last 1/5 of the disk shows an average speed of about 110 MB/s (90-120 MB).
Copying the same 42.5 GB file partly confirms the HDTune readings.
Here the speed ranges from 90 to 100 Mb/s.
Average read access time is normal — 15.6 ms.
Temperature
Since the HDD is in the case, I can’t say anything about heating without blowing. But at a room temperature of around 22°C, the disk temperature did not exceed 31°C under any load. nine0003
Conclusion
Should I take such an SMR disk to my home PC? If there are models with CMR at the same price, then probably not, but if only such models are available, or something like IronWolf or RED Plus is expensive for you (let’s not say that these are drives for NAS), then it’s fine. But here you need to understand why you take the HDD. The main purpose of such disks, or, if you like, the correct scenario for their use, is the storage of cold files. Using it as an archive disk, with rare writes and more frequent reads, did not distinguish it from the model installed in the CMR system in terms of usability. In principle, there were no problems with torrents either, but the author does not have the widest Internet channel (100 Mb / s), so I can’t predict how it could be in a different situation. nine0003
Nothing was said about the noise level, but it is not audible in a working system unit, except, perhaps, at night.
