New LGA775 processor

The new official processor names are of interest. Now, instead of specifying the clock frequency, the so-called «processor number» will be used. But at first, the name will indicate both the number and frequency of the processor.

New motherboards will have a 24-pin main power connector (current motherboards use a 20-pin connector). However, you should not be particularly worried, compatibility with conventional power supplies is declared.

It is interesting to note that in the near future Intel plans to switch to the BTX form factor. That is, we will get new cases with a modified design, as well as motherboards with a different arrangement of the main elements (processor socket, expansion memory slots).

i915P (Grantsdale) and i925X (Alderwood) chipsets

The southbridge is the ICH6 chip, which has several modifications. The most powerful of them is ICH6W, which has an increased number of SerialATA channels (up to 4) and support for WiFi technology (802.11b/g). True, in the first versions of ICH6W, WiFi support is disabled for marketing reasons, and motherboard manufacturers will be forced to bundle their products with separate WiFi-enabled expansion boards.

In addition, ICH6 supports 4 PCI Express x1 channels for various expansion cards, a new 8-channel audio subsystem, the ability to create RAID levels 0, 1 and MatrixRAID (some analogues of RAID 1.5). But the number of USB ports has not increased, and still = 8. As for ParallelATA, the number of channels, on the contrary, has decreased from 2 to 1. Thus, Intel is forcing users to more actively switch to SerialATA.

The i915P chipset differs slightly from the i925X. For sure, all 9 series chipsets00 are cut from the same plates, as was the case with the i865Pi865PEi875P.

An exception is possible for the i915G chipset, which has a new generation integrated graphics core (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900).

Now a few words about the performance of the LGA775 platform. There is no need to expect a significant jump in speed: despite the increased frequencies of new processor models, significant delays will occur as a result of using DDR2 memory, which has higher timings. As a result, the overall performance of LGA775 will be approximately equal to previous Socket478+DDR systems.

A significant increase in performance should be expected only by the end of the year, when Pentium4 processors will switch to a 1066 MHz system bus. To support these processors, it will be possible to use either boards based on the i925XE chipset (new chipset, official support), or some boards based on the i925X (which has unofficial support for this bus).

Conclusions

Actually, the main question that arises after the announcement of the LGA775 platform is «when will it be possible to buy and try all this?». The answer is very soon :). There are no problems with the release of processors and chipsets (of course, with so many factories at Intel :). There are no problems with motherboards either. Leading manufacturers received a sufficient number of chipsets and introduced many new models (we already have three high-end motherboards in our lab).

DDR2 memory is not expected to cause any problems: manufacturers need only a couple of days to reconfigure production lines, and in a month they are ready to saturate the market. The question remains with PCI Express video cards and power supplies. Most likely, there will also be no significant delays here: the corresponding products are announced in advance, and in the near future one new product after another will fall on the heads of poor users :).

The best processor for socket 775: is there any point ..?

Hello everyone Socket 775 is unfortunately more and more a thing of the past, even top-end processors on this socket are already starting to lose their power compared to modern cheap processors. Well, for example, take socket 1151, there is a Celeron G3900 processor, which costs about $40. Well, it is almost the same in power as, for example, the Q9500, and this, for the record, is a top-end processor on the 775th socket (and somehow sad).

Do you understand what the joke is? Modern Celeron on 1151 socket is almost the same in performance as Q9500, that’s progress! It’s just that the Q9500 goes to the 45 nm process technology, and Celeron is already at 14 nm, that’s the difference, if roughly speaking . .. If we compare the other parameters, then the Q9500 will lead by a wide margin, I’m already silent when compared with the Q9650. But it’s all in the parameters! But not in terms of performance!

Now everything is very interesting on the hardware market, for some time it was affordable, well, that is, the prices were normal, but then, somewhere at the end of 2014, prices began to rise strongly. Although in fact it is the dollar exchange rate that has scammed. Well, that’s not the point. The change in the price of new hardware has increased the demand for socket 775 hardware. This is me to the fact that the price of the top-end hardware of the 775th socket to this day (2016) remains not very low!

It’s a paradox, but the price, for example, of the same Q9650 and some top-end board on the 775th socket will be equal to the price of a budget bundle on 1151 sockets. Only socket 775 is used, and 1151 is new and at the same time the same in performance. Here is such a joke. But here’s a psychological joke — on the 775th socket it will be a BOLD top … Although with the performance of cheap modern processors …

By the way. Here I found a cool Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4 motherboard, you can put two video cards, the bus is 1600 here. True, DDR2 and max seem to be 8 GB. Here’s what it looks like:

Another thing I like about the 775 socket is that almost all top motherboards support all the features of a MODERN fast computer: large amount of RAM, the ability to connect an SSD, solid capacitors, built-in video with digital DVI (some do), support for modern video cards, and of course support for quad-core processors!

Well, that’s it. There are people like me — who are fans of the old, but the top. I don’t know how to explain this passion of mine, but somehow recently I had a choice: top-end hardware on the 775th socket or office hardware on 1150, but at the same time new. In general, to be honest, I wanted to take exactly the top one, on the 775th socket .. But since my computer works around the clock and I need it to work quickly and with the prospect of an upgrade, all the same, common sense won out and I took 1150 socket.. To be more precise, Pentium G3220 & Asus Gryphon Z87. Although I still screwed up with the percentage, I had to take it with an unlocked multiplier. .

Well, that’s it. Since I studied for a long time which is better, I learned a lot more about the 775th socket, namely, what good processors are on this socket.

By the way, not everyone knows that some boards on the 775th socket support ONLY maximum Pentium 4… Once I bought one, it was a long time ago, but I didn’t know that Stump could be max there.. such things..

So, now what about processors. Well, there are several worthy models on the 775th socket, while there are both ordinary ones, well, that is, it seems to me the best / optimal and super-productive.

The optimal choice in terms of price, heating, and performance is, of course, the Q9500/Q9650 model or similar models. The Q9650 is the top in the Q line, and differs from the Q9500 in cache size and frequency, here it is only 6 MB and a frequency of 2.83 GHz. So, I advise Q9650, it’s a powerful processor on the best Yorkfield core, four cores, 12 MB cache (or rather, two blocks of 6 MB each). The frequency is 3 GHz and it works on the 1333 bus, this is not the maximum, but almost. The chip of the processor is that it is adequately heated, that is, the TDP of the processor is 95 watts. You can safely overclock to 4 GHz on air cooling, GTA 5 calmly pulls, but of course paired with a good video card.

By the way, there is also Q9450, it is lower in frequency, here it is 2.66 GHz, but they say that it seems to be easier to overclock. I have not tried it myself, so I will not say

The next model I recommend is the QX9770. This is almost analogous to the Q9650, but still a little more powerful. There is also 12 MB of cache, but the frequency is already 3.20 GHz, but it works on a 1600 MHz bus, this is exactly the max. That is, this is the absolute top on the 775th socket. However, I still can not advise him, because he is too hot: TDP is as much as 136 watts. It’s decent, you need good cooling. Also built on the Yorkfield core. In principle, an excellent processor, just hot, so overclocking can be problematic.

All top-level processors have 4 cores, but none of the models have threads, that is, there is no Hyper-Threading technology at all. After the Pentium 4, Intel decided to abandon this technology for a while, but then it appeared again in the Intel Core i * family, but not in all processors. I’m thinking maybe they updated it all the time? I just read that Hyper-Threading has improved a lot, but they decided not to change the name.

The next model is L5430. This is not a simple processor, this is a server model based on the Harpertown core. That is, to put it in the 775th socket, you need an adapter and straight arms. The model can also be overclocked. But do you know what the L5430 is? It consumes only 50 watts, which is very, very good. That is, it can not be overclocked and it will consume quite a bit compared to top models. And that means less heat. However, I don’t know if the core of Harpertown is worse or better than Yorkfield. There are also two blocks of 6 MB cache, that is, a total of 12 MB. The frequency is 2.66 GHz and operates on a 1333 MHz bus. It can be overclocked to 3.6 GHz or even more, in the end we get the same Q9650, but most likely cooler. Not all motherboards support this percentage, as in principle, all server processors, here you need to update the BIOS and generally be in the subject, that is, smoke the Ixbt and Overclockers forums ..

There is also a Q6600 model, there are also four cores, but this is the very first quad-core model and, as they say, not the most successful one. At the same time, the TDP is 105 watts, despite the fact that the frequency is 2.4 GHz and it works on a 1066 bus. Well, that is, it’s definitely not the best quad-core.

Of the server processors, I can also recommend the X5470, it also has 12 MB of cache, a frequency of 3.33 MHz, and runs on a 1333 MHz bus. But the TDP is 120 watts, which is not enough. There is also the E5450 model, here the frequency is 3 GHz, 1333 MHz, 12 MB of cache and the E5472 model, everything is almost the same here, only it works on a 1600 MHz bus. But, the trick of these two processors, E5450 and E5472, is that they have a TDP of only 80 watts, while they are quite powerful. E5472 turns out to be an analogue of QX9770, but with a lower TDP and a slightly lower frequency. All of these server processors have a Harpertown core.

In general, everything that I have listed is, in my opinion, the best processors in terms of performance. If you are more or less versed in hardware, then you can take server models, in principle there is nothing complicated in installation. You need to stick the adapter, often it comes already glued. And you still need to cut two barbs in the socket itself in order to install it correctly. There are a lot of instructions on the Internet on this topic, the main thing here is to do everything carefully and slowly, unfortunately it is very easy to ruin everything. For the legs in the socket are very delicate and any careless movement — you will bend them, it is not always possible to restore them.

What would I personally take? Honestly, I don’t even know. Or Q9650 and not fool yourself, or E5472 and tinker a bit with the installation. Then install 16 gigs of RAM, an SSD drive, a decent vidyuhi, and you know, such a computer can even more or less be called a gaming one! Especially if you try to overclock. So it still makes sense in the 775th socket ..

As a result, I will say this — you can still squeeze out some power from socket 775, but you need to try. After all, not all motherboards support 16 gigs, not all chipsets support such a volume. Not all memory sticks will give such a volume. Yes, and DDR2 for 16 gigs is not a cheap pleasure. And not every board can be equipped with server Xeons.

So it’s all — for an amateur. If you want to mess around, then smoke forums, study and collect. And if not, then take the cheapest board on socket 1151 and Celeron G3900 and in the end you will get the same thing, just new and modern, well, an upgrade in the future.
