The impact in the furniture sector is even more significant given Americans’ newfound passion for home improvement. Demand for new home goods is skyrocketing, and suppliers just can’t keep up.

What Are The Factors Behind Furniture Delivery Delays

The media has given extensive coverage to the fact that everyone is on a redecorating kick this year. Most of us are spending lots of time at home and want to make our interiors as beautiful and comfortable as possible. In many cases, this means new furniture. It’s a great time to redecorate, and consumer spending boosts local businesses, including independent home furnishings retailers. But high demand combined with supply chain issues and labor shortages makes the process complicated. In most cases, you’re going to wait a few months to get that perfect piece delivered. Shipping Delays

Believe it or not, some of the ongoing delays in furniture delivery are directly related to the ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal in March. Around 12 percent of global trade passes through that narrow canal. And when a container ship got stuck in the waterway for nearly a week, it delayed billions of dollars of goods each day. Container ships carry both manufactured goods (including lots of furniture) and parts needed to make products here in the US, so both retail and production have felt the impact. COVID-related shutdowns have also led to congested ports in the US, forcing shipping companies to wait to unload their cargo. Given that shipping companies were already having trouble keeping up with demand in the building and home furnishings sector, these additional roadblocks have made things even more challenging.

Unexpected Economic Factors

In the early days of the COVID pandemic, many experts predicted that quarantines and job losses would reduce demand. But in fact, the opposite has happened. Boosted by stimulus packages, consumers have had extra disposable income for small luxuries like home decor. In an article for House Beautiful, Kaitlin Petersen notes that many furniture brands scaled back production, anticipating lower demand in the early days of the pandemic. The surge in consumer demand caught manufacturers off guard, and furniture producers are still catching up.

Labor Shortages

Even as US factories in all sectors recover from COVID-related shutdown and absenteeism, many are still catching up. Furniture producers are having trouble finding employees, with skilled labor in especially short supply. And even when production facilities are up to speed and completing orders, getting those orders to retailers and consumers can also be challenging. In a 21st Century job market, trucking companies were short-staffed before COVID, and the pandemic has worsened the driver shortage. When furniture brands can’t get orders out the door, it compounds supply chain issues and creates lengthy delays.

Materials Shortages

Because of shipping and labor shortages, US producers are running into materials shortages in almost every area. And even the weather is playing a role when it comes to furniture. From fabric to foam to wood and metal, nearly every furniture component is in short supply.

Fabric shortages: As Petersen points out, even furniture made in the US uses fabric sourced from India, Turkey and other countries in Asia. And much of the leather used in high-end furnishings comes from tanneries in Italy. Because of the global shipping backlog, US manufacturers can’t get the fabric they need to fill orders.
Foam shortages: the dramatic and deadly deep freeze in Texas this winter also had unexpected repercussions for the furniture industry. It turns out that much of the foam material used as furniture filler and for cushions is made from petrochemicals produced along the US Gulf Coast. According to Petersen, many of our domestic foam production factories are located in the same region. So when the unexpectedly cold temperatures in February left much of the area without power, it sidelined several petrochemical producers and threw a major wrench in foam production. As manufacturers began to ration foam, it created further delays in furniture production and delivery.
Wood shortages: the historic lumber shortages and record-high prices of 2021 have made headlines for months. Furniture makers are competing with building companies for precious raw materials. And while the shortage seems to be easing, it will take time for supply to catch up with demand.
Metal shortages: According to Petersen, metal furniture parts like sleeper sofa components, swivel chair mechanisms, and drawer glides, primarily produced in Asia, are also in short supply because of shipping and logistical delays.

A LITTLE HISTORY

At the end of 1902, a former peasant from the Oryol province, Frol Seregin, together with his brother Philip, set up a small workshop for repairing furniture on Sukharevka. Almost nothing is known about the first two years of the brothers’ activity. The Sukharevsky market of those times, according to the memoirs of Gilyarovsky, was generally a dark place. The weak, as you know, did not survive on Sukharevka. The Seryogin brothers survived and continued their work.

In 1914 Seregin’s Manufacture furniture was sold in Sereginsky’s own Platz Saloons from Moscow to Irkutsk and from Arkhangelsk to the obscure Kushka. In the capitals, she stood with Prince Kropotkin, the lawyer Plevako, Minister Witte, the all-powerful Pyotr Arkadyevich Stolypin, and many others, including the august ones.

But everything was very different.

Frol Efimych chose the day of March 8 only because this day was the birthday of the younger Seregin, who, as Frol Efimych thought then, disappeared in a foreign land. So the prayer service was, as it were, double: both in memory of the brother and, at the same time, in honor of the anniversary. The brother was found the next year, but Frol Efimych did not endure the holiday and in 1915 again arranged it on March 8th. And next year too. And then.

Not only in Sokolniki, not only throughout Moscow, but in all cities of Russia, wherever the factory had contacts, they already knew that on March 8, the Seregin factory was not working. So they began to call them — «March».

Then other times came and the enterprise, for reasons beyond its control, did not work at all for several years, and when it reopened, the day of March 8 had already become a state proletarian holiday.

Frol Efimych, unlike Philip, who was accustomed to such things in his America, endured the revolution hard. He even started drinking, but quickly came to his senses: he transferred the capital through Stockholm to Philip’s American accounts and went to him in America himself. Workshops, machine tools, warehouses — he abandoned everything. In the USA, where the Seregins settled in Boston, the brothers invested in a seemingly lost furniture factory. But the experience did its job, and in two years Frol and Philip developed and launched a completely new series of sofas and armchairs on the market, calling them with a rather fashionable name — the Albert & Shtein series.

The advertising move with the name turned out to be quite successful, and Albert & Shtein furniture on the market was in demand among people with above-average incomes.

In the mid-twenties, when concessions with the participation of foreign capital began to appear like mushrooms in Russia, Frol Seregin returned to Moscow. It was the time of the New Economic Policy, the time of active business ties between the Soviets and the West. From 1926 to 19For 29 years, Frol Seregin, prudently leaving his younger brother in the States to manage the production there, tried to revive his factory. The few workers that survived returned to Seregin. True, now he was no longer a sovereign owner, but only an «American shareholder.» And then, against the backdrop of general furniture despondency, Frol Efimych came up with an absolutely brilliant idea in its simplicity: to produce not sofas, not armchairs, and not even beds. He started producing spring mattresses!

They were installed on home-made frames knocked down from stolen boards, put on bricks, simply laid on the floor. A whole chapter in «12 Chairs» is devoted to this mattress boom, provoked in 1927 by Frol Seregin!

Until 1957, the history of the Sereginsky factory changed dramatically several times. An unexpected and large pre-war order for leather sofas for district prosecutors was suddenly replaced by an order for seats for «one and a half». At the beginning of the war, the factory was evacuated to a small town on the coast of Balkhash, then to the Urals.

The return of production to Moscow took place in stages. The real return to Moscow of all production, as well as the return of the name «Furniture Factory on March 8», were provoked by the collapse of the Union and the destruction of ties with suppliers. But not only this. There were people who, in the chaos of the transitional period, were ready to lay the foundations for Russia’s future market economy. One of these people was Mikhail Kravchenko, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University, at that time still a very young entrepreneur. The Seryogin brothers were his distant relatives and, perhaps, the history of the family became the decisive factor in choosing Mikhail’s field of activity.

Starting with a very small production, M.V. Kravchenko quickly realized that the furniture industry in a country ravaged by changes practically does not exist. There are no designs, big problems with components, there is a complete lack of a systematic organization of sales. To find all this and to learn everything necessary at that time was possible only in the West. In his numerous trips to international exhibitions, in a thorough study of the experience of organizing production and marketing, accumulated by enterprises in Italy, Germany, France and the USA, Mikhail bit by bit collected the knowledge that later helped him turn his own enterprise into a recognized leader in the domestic furniture industry.

And then something happened… On one of his regular trips to Milan, to the annual furniture salon that was held there, M.V. Kravchenko brought a book to Moscow. Yes, not simple, but very interesting — History of European Furniture & Review of Historically Recognized Manufacturers. Le Roix & Clyde. Glasgow. He brought this book, of course, with intent. As the old-fashioned writers used to say, «what was the surprise of all those gathered» . ..

So here it is; “What was the surprise of all the assembled” shareholders when in the Russian Producers section they saw a painfully native oval logo on an old factory building. The caption under the picture was even more native, despite the difference in languages: Moscow 8th of March Furn. Plant. Founded by Seriogin.

Of course, not everything has sunk into intrepid oblivion. They knew, of course, something at the factory about Seregin. Yes, everyone somehow had no time to deal with their own history. But here the story came out already quite close to reality. The factory began what is called «its own investigation.» We contacted the relatives of the Seregins in the USA. Just in case, we checked those same American furniture bolts from Ohio. We checked and found out that the company that sold them to Seregin is still alive, and now it makes a furniture brace with a special coating that surpasses all products of this kind previously known at the factory. We signed a contract and again began to buy components and professional tools in America.

And the shadow of the former owner seemed to continue to hover over the factory, bringing his old acquaintances, opening the pages of documents. Then it became clear where the name «Factory of March 8th» actually came from.

Today, the old logo with the Sereginsky eight is back at the factory. At first they wanted to leave the very first one, with the name of the founder. But after thinking, we decided to leave the oval «Furniture Factory on March 8», which appeared in the twenties. In the end, almost the entire twentieth century, the factory lived with this name. So she was remembered by those who had a chance to work with her. That is how they know her now.
