Windshield wiper timing: How to Re-Time the Windshield Wiper

Proper Timing to Change Your Windshield Wipers

One of the more common, puzzling questions for many vehicle owners is the simple concern about when to change their windshield wipers on their car or truck. Many windshield wiper manufacturers highly recommend that wiper blades are changed at least twice per year on all vehicles. Though quite simple and practical advice, the truth is that there is no specific timeline for the lifespan of your wipers but rather upgrading or changing them is dependent upon the various conditions your vehicle encounters during the year and on the amount of wear and tear they experience.

When to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Depending upon the amount of wear and tear your wipers have seen and the various weather conditions they have faced, timelines for changing your windshield wipers will vary. If you live in locations where there is little to no rain, then your wipers are apt to last at least 6 months, if not longer. Without the presence of harsh weather conditions and especially in cooler climates, your wipers may very well not need to be changed but once per year or even once every two years.

If you live in an area that experiences a whole lot of rain or snow or in an area where it is extremely hot year-round or if you house your vehicle outdoors during extremely hot temperatures, there is a good chance you will need to replace your wipers every 6 months. It is important that you also change your rear wipers at the same time you change the front wipers in your efforts to maintain a consistent and accurate maintenance schedule for your vehicle wipers.

I have those odd type of windshield wipers where they go away from each other, instead of left and right together. After changing the wiper transmission, motor, and armature on top of the motor, I don’t know how to set the timing to have the arms correctly move when on intermittent setting and when in park. I’ve tried resetting the motor arm part and moving the arms. I’ve also adjusted the setting on the small slot on the arm part that’s on top of the motor. But I can’t seem to get them working correctly. Can you direct me to a website page that would give me instructions on what to do — or give me the steps. Thanks.

The process can be very difficult and there is some steps that require turning on the wiper to intermittent and then measuring the alignment. You can search up «wiper transmission installation» for your specific vehicle and it should come up with many videos and procedures for you to follow. I cannot give a specific ones in particular since some have copyright blocks.

It’s pretty easy to search them up and follow them to fix it. However, if you can’t seem to get the help you need online and you’d like some assistance with the installation, contact a certified mechanic that can ensure that your wipers are functioning properly at your own convenience.

How often should the car wipers be changed

How often should the car wipers be changed

Avangard Auto specialists understand the nuances of such, at first glance, an insignificant element of a car as windshield wipers. An experienced motorist knows that driving comfort, road safety and even the safety of a car windshield depend on this small detail! Let’s try to understand in more detail the question of how often to change the wipers.

So what is the lifespan of windshield wipers? On average, about 1. 5 years. However, no manufacturer will name the exact number of years during which the “wipers” will regularly perform the task of cleaning the windshield of a car. Mainly because the life of the windshield wipers depends on many factors.

For example, in a car that is used every day in Moscow with dirt and reagents under the wheels, he runs the risk of not living even six months. And on a car rarely leaving the garage somewhere in Orsk, it can easily exceed a few years. And the climate with precipitation will certainly contribute to these values.

How often do you change the windshield wipers on your car? Manufacturers try to avoid specifics on the packaging and instructions for wiper blades, often simply reassuring buyers with a long product life or illustrating promises with non-binding asterisks, circles or other symbols. The maximum that can be seen on a cardboard box or blister is the expiration date of the part. It is up to 36 months.

How to understand that it is time to change the «wipers»? The main sign of brush wear is well known to every driver — they stop cleaning. During their operation, streaks, streaks or uncovered dirty areas remain on the glass. However, there are other symptoms that will tell the driver that these parts need to be replaced soon. For example, the «janitor» starts to work too noisily, move jerkily on the surface of the glass.

Such “crushing” occurs when, when changing the direction of movement, there is no “shifting” of the working part of the brush. Also, the reason for replacing the «wiper» may be damage to its frame or the appearance of corrosion on moving elements. Glass cleaning problems arise if the wiper rubber bands are damaged. Tears may appear on them, fragments may be missing, or the fastening to the frame is weakening.

How to extend the life of the windshield wiper blades? The service life and quality of work of all types of car wipers, even the most expensive and progressive ones, in fact can be approximately the same, each driver can extend it with the help of simple regular maintenance and little tricks.

For example, from time to time to clean gum from dirt. To do this, first wipe the brush with a damp cloth or cloth, and then with a solution of vinegar. Also, keep your windshield clean. Dirt and reagents are not completely washed off its surface even during rain. Therefore, wiping the glass before the trip, you will also increase the life of the wipers.

In winter, do not tear off the frozen brush from the glass. There is a risk of damaging its rubber element. It is better to let it thaw along with the glass, directing air streams at it immediately after starting the engine. So that the brushes do not freeze to the glass, leaving the car in the parking lot in the cold, it is better to raise them to the so-called service position, and clear them of ice before the trip.

Which brushes last longer? There are three types of wipers. The simplest and most affordable — frame. They are bulkier, noisier, not as presentable as the others, and can freeze a lot in winter, losing flexibility and cleaning the windshield worse. Frameless ones are more compact, lighter, more streamlined, look prettier, work better, do not freeze, but are more expensive than frame ones.

Hybrid — a combination of the first two options. They combine a somewhat simplified frame structure, hidden in a plastic case. This view is the most aerodynamic. Hybrid «wipers» are well pressed against the glass, surpass the rest in terms of performance, but their cost is even higher.

Therefore, for the best option, it makes sense to choose frameless. They are the most versatile, average in price, as well as in performance. Such “wipers” block the driver’s view less, press well against the glass at speed and have the least problems with them in winter. The main thing is to monitor the condition of the rubber band and do not forget to change the brushes in a timely manner. We also recommend purchasing «wipers» in specialized car dealerships, and not in the «five» at the checkout for a promotion, which is often found recently.

5 signs it’s time to change your wiper blades

The humble wiper blade is an accessory we don’t tend to pay much attention to, but with poor visibility playing a significant role in traffic accidents, investing in quality blades and their Regular replacements can keep you and your family safe on the road while also saving you money in the long run. Here are 5 signs it’s time to change your windshield wipers, plus a few tips for finding the best new kit for your car…

1. Lazy Windshield Wiper

If your wiper blades bleed water across your windshield instead of wiping water smoothly, this is more a sign of underuse than wear. This often happens in hot and dry climates where the sun causes the blades to «lock» in one direction instead of turning when the wiper blade changes direction.

Either way, it’s a sign that it’s time to change your windshield wipers. When you do, consider installing a set of wiper blades that use a composite of natural and man-made rubber rather than 100% natural rubber. Synthetic rubber has been proven to be more resistant to sun damage and ‘hold’ than natural rubber.

2. Windshield wiper

Windshield wipers that leave streaks on your windshield may just need to be cleaned with a soft cloth to remove dirt or debris. But if the streak persists, it’s a sign that the wipers themselves are failing and it’s time to replace them.

Consider replacing your stripe wiper with a flat wiper such as a non-original Hydroconnect™ wiper or with an original Valeo Silencio 9 blade0054 TM .

Where traditional wiper blades have only four to eight pressure points, flat blades such as the Valeo Hydroconnect™ have hundreds of points of contact. This creates a constant pressure along the entire length of each individual wiper.

The result is smoother, quieter and more stable operation, especially at high speeds and during heavy use – when we need them most!

3. Windshield wiper squeaker

In addition to being annoying, a squeaky windshield wiper is either a sign of improper installation or an indication that it needs to be replaced. In both cases, the wiper rubber does not make smooth contact with your car’s windshield and will not clean it properly.

Try tightening or loosening the wiper arms first, as the blade may just need to be adjusted. If you still hear a squeak after adjusting, then it’s time to change the brushes.

4.

Wiper Smear

If you have a dirty windshield, the windshield wiper can smear that dirt. What’s more, a film of dirt on the glass can interfere with clean contact between the blades and the windshield, leaving large areas dirty and you with poor visibility.

If you’ve cleaned your windshield and you can’t avoid smearing, it’s time to change your windshield wipers.

5. With

cleaner — Damaged

In addition to all of the above symptoms, if your wiper blades are damaged in any way, their function and visibility will be affected. And most importantly, be alert for any damage to the wiper rubber or loss of traction with the wiper arm. Also pay attention to any damage to the mechanism itself — bent or damaged wipers should be replaced immediately.
