Pronunciation in English: how to upgrade
Ekaterina Shamaeva

Once I had an interview in English for an international company.
After the screening of the resume, it was necessary to pass a test for knowledge of a foreign language. We talked with the HR on everyday topics, and at the end she talked about my mistakes — almost all of them were related to pronunciation. Then I decided to take it seriously.
How I worked with pronunciation
In everyday life, I practically do not speak English, I only write and read, according to my feelings, my level is stable B2. As a child, I studied English at a language school, but they paid little attention to pronunciation, so I remembered it the way I did it.
I love to learn by myself, so I started looking for sources on the Internet. I decided to work on the American pronunciation for several reasons. Firstly, most of the TV shows, movies, songs and podcasts that I listen to and watch are in American English, so it makes more sense to learn it. Secondly, it seemed to me easier than the British one.
This is how I organized my studies:
- I studied transcription to understand how a word, even unfamiliar, sounds correctly. It also helped me in learning French — there are similar rules;
- learned how to build phrases, taking into account the peculiarities of pronunciation, so that sentences sounded connected, and not like a bunch of words. For this, it was important to deal with word stress — I will talk about this below;
- developed the skill of active listening — closely followed how the rules of pronunciation are used in the real language environment.
I improved my pronunciation with the help of textbooks and YouTube channels. Foreigners with whom I spoke personally or through language exchange services noted that my speech was easy to understand, and my Russian accent was not so prominent.
After working on pronunciation, my listening comprehension skills in English have also improved — I watch TV shows without subtitles and parse the text in songs and podcasts. I participated in a project whose leader lives in the USA and often dictated voice messages to me in English — I also understood them well.
My level is also supported by the fact that I use English at work: I read research in English and often visit foreign sites to collect information for texts — I am a journalist by profession.
I will tell you what resources I consider the most useful for working on pronunciation.

, as they look in the dictionary, but also with the help of the international phonetic alphabet — IPA. If you open a French textbook, it will contain the same characters.
The PhoneticFanatic YouTube channel, which is dedicated to English pronunciation, helped me learn the phonetic alphabet. The channel is designed for beginners, so the first video tells what the international phonetic alphabet is, and then sounds are analyzed in detail in each video.
The IPA alphabet is also useful for learning other languages
The channel is suitable for learning American and British English: the presenter analyzes the pronunciations in turn. After describing each sound, there is a slow-motion fragment from a movie or TV show and exercises to reinforce the theory. The host gives tasks: phrases, tongue twisters, poems. First he says, then the spectator.
I repeated everything after the leader and took notes in a notebook or in notes on the phone. The entries looked like this: first a sound in square brackets, then a few words where this sound is clearly expressed. I specifically memorized how the transcription of this or that sound is written, so that later I can understand how to read the word, seeing only phonetic designations.
8 telegram channels for practicing English
After that, I reviewed the releases of PhoneticFanatic several times. This is called the spaced repetition method: repeat the learned material at intervals. I can’t say that I strictly adhered to the deadlines, but I definitely repeated the same material 3-4 times.

Mastering the American Accent
Format: Textbook
Explain: in English

How much it costs: 3811 p in the book «Moscow»
I love to engage in textbooks, so I went in search of the best. For me, it was the phonetics textbook Mastering the American Accent. I learned about him from the video blog of a Russian girl who lives in the USA. Then I tried to look for other textbooks, but this one turned out to be the best for me.
The textbook begins with the study of sounds and sound combinations. There is a brief theory about how the sound apparatus works with American pronunciation: the position of the tongue, larynx. It was difficult to perceive it from the description, so I additionally searched on YouTube for an anatomical video. To find such videos, I entered pronunciation and a specific sound in the search bar.
Unfortunately, the textbook is not easy to find, but it’s worth it. Source: moscowbooks.ru Assignments for Russian-speaking students
The book comes with a CD with audio recordings of lessons for doing exercises. Therefore, I simultaneously opened the textbook and listened to the recording of the lesson. I liked that the exercises are written for students from different countries: Russia, China, Japan, Spain. They work out frequent phonetic errors that occur when switching from one’s native language to a foreign one. Over time, the jaw «deforms» under the native language, it is because of this that pronunciation in some languages is more difficult, and in others it is easier.
For example, in some English words, Russian speakers use soft [n] and [l] when followed by [i] and [I] vowels — but [n] and [l] in English are almost always hard. Therefore, in the words believe, analyst, really, actually, one cannot soften [l], as in the Russian words “polish”, “laziness”. The section has exercises that will help get rid of these habits.
What is an accent and whether it is necessary to get rid of it

Pronunciation is the correct reading of a word. Conventionally, according to transcription, when clothes is not “clovez”, but [kləʊðz] or [kloʊðz]. An accent is what a person, in the case of a native language, acquires along with mother’s milk, and this is part of his personality.
In the case of English, they usually talk about two accents: US and UK, but in fact there are many more. The Texas accent is very different from the Boston one, and Scottish English is not the English of the royal family. Imitating an accent is a fascinating activity, but very difficult and time-consuming. It makes sense if you have already moved to another country and do not want to stand out from the rest of the people; or if you teach phonetics, or train actors. Well, or you are a spy. In case you are an ordinary person who wants to speak and be understood, imitating an accent is pointless.
Because even if you speak with an English accent, you have Slavic notes and from time to time they leak out. A person can make incredible efforts and make sure that these Slavic notes do not leak out. It’s not always clear why? Doing it for no reason is as strange as transplanting skin. The accent is always part of the identity, it is not removable.
Speaking with a Russian accent is absolutely normal, the only question is where the limits of this accent are. Pronouncing words correctly is essential to being understood. At the same time, trying to imitate a native speaker is commendable, but language is also a melody, intonation, that part that is already closer to acting than to learning a language.
In pronunciation, the task is at least: to pronounce the sound that is needed so that the blood is not “fornication”, and the foreigner is “Foreigner”. This problem is solved by transcription.
The second task, after which you will get your “excellent” in English in any exam, is to make the sounds in your speech not Russian, but English, and the blood becomes “blʌd”. At this stage, you are already well done, and so is your English, but this is not yet an accent.
Accent training is an «asterisk» task where you learn connected speech techniques, correct intonation and regional peculiarities. The difficulty, bordering on the impossibility of this task, lies in the fact that in a dialogue a vowel or consonant no-no yes leaks out, native to the speech apparatus, and there is not always enough resource to keep track of intonations. At this stage, we are talking about special talent, special hearing and perseverance.
How to evaluate your progress in pronunciation. There is an easy way, but it works. You need to talk to the Google Assistant or someone like that, just say the text in the notes. It is desirable that it be a large text and you dictate it in a normal rhythm. And see what will be correctly understood by the system and what will not. This is where minor flaws like staff and stuff, lack and luck can pop up.
The second way, more interesting, is to find native speakers who will listen to you and appreciate your accent. This is easy to do with the help of language exchange resources.
Another very important method is to record yourself and listen. It is better to record something that has a standard — for example, a piece from an audiobook. When recording, I suggest that students put an earpiece with an audiobook in their ear and read in unison, and then compare with the original. We do not hear ourselves from the outside, and therefore we notice our mistakes in the recording as well as others. A universal method to understand that I’m great: I don’t blush to the tips of my eyebrows when I listen to this, and it looks like the original.

Also on the channel there are video analyzes of mistakes made by Russian speakers and life hacks on how to fix these mistakes. For example, the presenter says that all English sounds «and» performed by Russian-speaking people are the same, but in fact in English there are short and long «and».
These videos were my next step in learning pronunciation — I switched to them after I learned the basics from textbooks.

Lisa has several playlists on her channel that are dedicated to various features of American phonetics: word stress — so that words do not clump together, and word linking — a phonetic phenomenon in which words «add up» to a sentence, slang and idioms, learning features students of different nationalities.
Some of the lessons repeat the textbook, but this helped me to repeat the material covered. I really liked the fact that the presenter writes down examples on the board — it’s easier to memorize letter combinations that correspond to certain sounds.

Lisa also interviews people from different professions: for example, firefighters and psychologists. My favorite interview is with the American stage speech artist, dubbing actress who voiced Apple’s voice assistant Siri.

They also sort out the songs. For example, one video is about Eminem’s popular tracks: the presenter stops the recording and explains how certain words are pronounced. After theory, there is even karaoke: credits roll, you need to read or sing the lyrics with the correct pronunciation. Now I understand almost without any problems what Eminem is singing about, although earlier his rap seemed to me an incomprehensible set of words.
Eminem raps very fast, and sometimes it is not clear what he is saying. The facilitator explains the keywords, so after watching the video everything becomes clear

more: Comic Ellen Sacrees’ talks about their lives. This is a great opportunity to hear how pronunciation rules work in real life.
Each video is a mine of colloquial vocabulary. Both accents can be heard on the show: for example, the British accent is in the release with Benedict Cumberbatch, the American one is with Jennifer Aniston. It turned out to be a discovery for me how easy it is to distinguish between American and British English — it turned out that I just needed to hear once in the video lessons how they sound in order to recognize them.
Conversational videos like these helped me learn to recognize English speech in the background. I turned on interviews and did household chores. If any moment was incomprehensible to me, I listened to it again and with subtitles.
Ellen has very funny interviews
