ATI announced two next-generation graphics cards this morning, the 256MB Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition and the 128MB Radeon X800 Pro. The higher-end X800 XT Platinum Edition card goes on sale May 21; the $399 X800 Pro card is available today. With impressive benchmark scores, an efficient design, and a price that brings elite 3D graphics power closer to the hands of PC gamers than the most expensive cards, early adopters and gamers looking for a strong performance-to-price ratio will want to give the X800 Pro serious consideration.

The X800 Pro and X800 XT Platinum Edition cards are extremely similar in design. Both feature a slim, single-AGP-slot design, which means that you don’t lose an adjacent PCI slot because of an overhanging fan. Both cards also require only one connection to your PC’s 300- to 350-watt power supply (depending on the number of other hardware components), unlike Nvidia’s new GeForce 6800 Ultra card, which demands two connections to at least a 480-watt supply.

The X800 Pro and the X800 XT also share the same fundamental architecture, with the X800 Pro having more modest specifications: 128MB of memory instead of 256MB and 12 pixel-rendering pipelines compared to the XT’s 16 pipes (the previous generation high-end Radeon cards had 8). Both cards offer advanced image-quality-enhancing features such as ATI’s new 3Dc texture compression and so-called temporal antialiasing. These features will mean more in the coming months, however, when new drivers, new games, and patches for old titles come out that enable them.

Until we can test the X800 Pro’s direct competitor, the GeForce 6800 GT, which was also announced today, we can’t tell you whether ATI or Nvidia is the leader at this performance level and price point. Nvidia has told us that the 6800 GT will require only one expansion slot, one power-supply connector, and less wattage than the 6800 Ultra, but we’ll reserve judgment until we can see the card for ourselves and run it through our tests. Measured against both the Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition and the GeForce 6800 Ultra, however, the X800 Pro gives a strong performance.

The X800 Pro, in fact, bested the supposedly higher-end GeForce 6800 Ultra card on half of our benchmarks. Of particular interest is that the X800 Pro beat the 6800 Ultra on our new Far Cry benchmark at the demanding 1,600×1,200 resolution. This game is one of the first to take extensive advantage of DirectX 9.0 graphics effects, and it presents an extremely challenging graphics test. While all 3D game software is different, if the ATI Radeon X800 Pro’s impressive performance with Far Cry is any indication, you will be well positioned for high-quality gaming in the foreseeable future if you pick up this card.

After years of finishing second to Nvidia in the race for graphics supremacy, ATI has finally handed a defeat to its rival. Frankly, we were shocked at the difference in performance between the two top-of-the-line, next-generation cards. The 256MB ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition trounced Nvidia’s new

2004

GeForce 6800 Ultra so soundly in our tests that there is no longer any question: ATI’s new graphics card is the best product of its kind.

Like many classic dramas, power and greed are at the forefront of this heated competition. When we first spoke to Nvidia about the GeForce 6800 Ultra, we were astounded at the power requirements. A minimum 480-watt power supply? Not one but two power connectors? Unaware of ATI’s new specs, we feared these extreme wattage demands represented the beginning of a cumbersome new era in performance computing, one bristling with heat sinks, nitrogen cooling, and minivan-size PC cases. Thankfully, the X800 XT allayed our fears. It requires only a single power connection to a 300-to-350-watt power supply, which is the same requirement as that of ATI’s previous high-end card, the Radeon 9800 XT.

Until now, power consumption has not been a significant factor with graphics cards because most PCs had enough oomph for a CPU, a graphics card, multiple hard drives, and other components. But given the 6800 Ultra’s extreme power requirements and the fact that new CPUs have intense wattage demands of their own, the X800 XT has a clear advantage. Do you plan to upgrade the graphics on your current desktop? Since the vast majority of current PCs have 450-watt power supplies at most, you’ll need to drop another $50 to $200 for a 480-watt or greater power supply if you choose the 6800 Ultra card. Not so with the X800 XT.

If you want to build or buy a fast small-form-factor (SFF) PC, ATI’s new card is your only high-performance option because thermal issues are especially problematic in cramped SFF interiors. Another design edge: the X800 XT uses only one expansion slot. The massive fan on the 6800 Ultra makes the card hog two slots, making it even more unsuitable for an SFF PC or any system in which expansion room is limited.

The next-generation cards from ATI and Nvidia include architectural advancements as well, the most notable of which is the 16 pixel-rendering pipes found on both the X800 XT and the 6800 Ultra. That’s the most 3D graphics-processing headroom to date from either company. As always with image-quality improvements in new graphics cards, most of the new capabilities are not demonstrable at launch since game developers usually need some time to code software that takes advantage of the new features. Two new features to note with X800 XT are a new texture-compression technology called 3Dc, which improves the image quality of surface details, and temporal antialiasing, a new strategy for improving overall image smoothness with less of a performance drain. You can find tech demos on ATI’s «—=»» rel=»nofollow» target=»_blank»>&siteid=7&edid=&lop=txt&destcat=ex&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eati%2Ecom»>Web site that highlight these new features, but real-world examples are a ways off.

New features are always appreciated, but what every gamer wants to know is how the new cards perform. Our benchmarks show that the X800 XT is far and away the winner, beating Nvidia at every step. The results from our new 1,600×1,200 Far Cry benchmark illustrate the difference most dramatically. Far Cry presents an extremely challenging graphics engine that is representative of the type of 3D graphics we will see in the near future. Testing with Far Cry at the highest detail settings, the X800 XT was able to display roughly 40 percent more frames per second than the 6800 Ultra. Both cards make it possible to play new 3D games with the best image quality and fast frame rates. The shocking difference is how much better the ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition performs. It’s not only the undisputed performance leader, it’s also the best-designed graphics card out right now.

Video card ATI Radeon X800 XT

Based on the R420 chip, two video cards are planned for production — ATI Radeon X800 in XT and Pro versions. ATI Radeon X800 Pro with 12 pixel pipelines will be released on May 4th, and X800 XT with 16 pixel pipelines will officially launch on May 21st. All their differences are presented in the following table:

Design

Although today (May 4) ATI will present the 12-pipeline ATI Radeon X800 Pro, we got its older brother — the 16-pipeline ATI Radeon X800 XT shown in the photos:

Front ATI Radeon X800 XT. *2400×1539; 611Kb

Front ATI Radeon X800 XT without cooler. *1600×1087; 400Kb

Back ATI Radeon X800 XT. *2200×1424; 741Kb

As you can see, the card looks very similar to its predecessor — ATI Radeon 9800XT. And the cooling system, while retaining its shape, has become even smaller! Yes, they simply mock the heroic systems of their competitor.

And yet, such a «similarity» does not suit a completely new product. I would like more serious external differences — for example, white textolite. The absence of the X800 XT logo on the board is not a mistake, but the consequences of the sample origin of the card. On the cards that go on sale, there will be this logo:

By the way, would you like to take a look at a person who makes layouts for all ATI video cards with his own hands?

A graduate of Baumanka 😉 Sometimes she reads Russian reviews of her products, but mostly she doesn’t tear herself away from her huge monitor and tries to breed another thousand legs of a freshly baked chip. It turns out that TSMC loves to swap the signal pins of the processor and each new sample or revision requires a redesign of the board layout.

I won’t give my last name and e-mail — it will come in handy 😉

Power Consumption

One of the most serious problems for video cards is the heat dissipation of the core and memory chips.

The ATI Radeon X800XT reference card consumes only ~70W, which is one and a half times less than the 110W required by the GeForce 6800 Ultra. Why such a fantastic difference, which has already become traditional for the competitive models of both companies? The answer is obvious — 160 million transistors using Low-k dielectric versus 222 million without Low-k for NVIDIA chips, plus a more modern core from ATI whose legs grow from Radeon9700Pro, brought almost by hand at one time. And thirdly, all ATI’s power-saving technologies for mobile solutions are implemented on conventional ATI graphics processors. Conveyors simply turn off if they are idle.

The current main NVIDIA core is two generations older and over time has been overgrown with makeweights and new blocks, which inevitably leads to a general «lower efficiency». This became obvious for the first time with the release of the NV30, and it took a lot of effort for NVIDIA not to lose face and urgently start upgrading and fine-tuning the chip — by the way, it turned out not bad. But history repeats itself — again the need for a two-story cooling system (initially, they tried to design the card with a low-profile cooling unit) and, this time, there are already two obligatory molex power connectors that must be connected to two different power cables. The recommended power supply for the system with NV40 installed is 480W. It is very difficult to get such PSUs in Russia, and the cost is ~$120-150.

GeForce 6800Ultra

The number of transistors on a chip has a key effect on several other characteristics. The more of them — the lower the percentage of yield of suitable crystals, the lower the frequency of the chip, and the more difficult it is to supply power to the crystal (more zones).

ATI Radeon X800XT has one molex power connector. The yellowish connector of incomprehensible purpose is present only on references distributed to test laboratories and made at ATI’s own small production facility for its own test purposes. It will not be on the cards that will go on sale.

Pay attention to how simplified the voltage regulator block.

And a little more about the power supply of modern cards — 70W is more than can be supplied via the AGP bus, but less (!) than PCI-Express16 (~75W) can handle. As a result, when new motherboards appear, we can expect R420 cards without any additional power supply. Yes, and NV40 will most likely get rid of one of the two connectors in its PCI-E version. In any case, the release date for AGP versions of both Radeon X800XT and GeForce 6800Ultra is limited to a few months, after which they will become rarities. As soon as Intel announces Alderwood and Grantsdale, the computer industry will be quickly transitioned to PCI-E rails.

VIVO

Both Radeon X800 cards have a VIVO (old RAGE THEATER) chip on board. From the previous 9800XT series, only the card from ASUS was equipped with the Theater 200 chip.

Traditionally, the «map» chapter also deals with memory, but this time the topic is so huge, but it needed to be moved to a separate page.
