Customer Reviews
Poor build quality.
Matthew Wasserman, 11th September 2013
Noticed the request for contact before posting a review, these are my problems with the CPU cooler in the review format they would have been posted in: First off, it doesn’t cool nearly as well as it claims to, but that’s the least of it considering there’s always overcompensation in the advertising for new products.
Poor Build Quality:
- Copper heatsink came heavily scratched.
- One of the screws that secure the circular piece used for mounting the cpu heatsink/pump had an improperly drilled hole, would not go in.
- PWM connector for the fan came with the wire loose, not tucked behind the plastic shell like it should have been, making it impossible to mount an additional fan without the wire stopping the fan.
Despite these problems, I gave the cooler a try. Temperatures fluctuate constantly and were it not for the difficulty of removing the backplate (who thought double sided tape was a good idea?) I would have already replaced it with a different cooler. If I wouldn’t have had to ship it internationally, I would have returned it immediately.
Impressed so far!
Lewis Ley, 9th August 2013
Just got mine installed replacing a stock cooler on my FX8350 (not overclocked). I did a benchmark on the stock cooler and it hit 64[deg]C, then did it with the Reserator 3 and it dropped to 44[deg]C on 100% load. This should leave me a lot of room to overclock with, hopefully.
Aesthetics, well it’s Zalman and Zalman products tend to look awesome (in my humble opinion). I would like to point out however that the Fan LED seems quite dim. Most of my case fans are blue LED fans but this one is by far the dimmest. Anyway, either you like the looks or you don’t.
Installation, well, admittedly it’s my first time so it took a lot longer than i thought, perhaps an hour or so (my case has a panel so I don’t have to remove the motherboard to change the cooler). Frankly the whole process was pretty straightforward, the instructions are clear and everything fitted together nicely. That being said, when it came to screwing the pump on to the back plate it became tricky. I think it would have made it A LOT easier if I’d had another set of hands for this but it really took about 90% of the time trying to line the screws up with the back plate. If you have someone that can hold the back plate in place while you do it, then it will be a lot more straightforward. Removing things from the motherboard to give you some more room is also a way around it, but I didn’t.
Anyway, like I said in the title, i’m impressed. I would like to see how it stacks up against its competitors though, but however it fares, i’m still very happy with my choice.

Zalman Reserator 3 Max Review
Manufacturer: Zalman
UK price (as reviewed):£83. 20 (inc VAT)
US price (as reviewed):$124.99 (ex Tax)
While Zalman proudly boasts that its latest all-in-one liquid cooler is the world’s first to use a nanoparticle coolant, we were more intrigued by other aspects of its design. The circular copper radiator is especially eye-catching, and stands out from the sea of black rectangles to be found around the rest of our labs. Its price also caught our attention, as at almost £85, it’s the most expensive 120mm radiator cooler available, coming in at even more than SilverStone’s TD03 and nipping at the heels of the excellent Corsair h200i.
Beginning with the waterblock, we were pleased to discover just how solid it is. The majority of it is made from copper and the smooth and shiny baseplate is securely screwed into place. The top of it lights up blue when its powered up, which maybe to some people’s taste, but almost certainly not everyone’s, which is why it’s a shame there’s no way to disable it. A sadly unbraided standard black 3-pin cable powers the pump.
Click to enlarge
The tubing isn’t as thick as that which, for example, Corsair uses, but the rubber material is still feels of a good quality. It’s flexible enough to bend easily, but still feels a lot sturdier than the FEP that SilverStone’s Tundra coolers use. The tubes, as is their wont, pass into and out of the radiator, which is where things start to get a little different.
The circular radiator is actually formed from two separate radiators, an inner and an outer one. As the diagram shows, each radiator also has an upper and lower level of piping, so the water flows around the circle four times, giving it longer to be cooled than just one or two circles would allow. It’s an efficient use of space to be sure, but only testing will tell how effective it is. Zalman also claims that airflow generated by this design has positive effects on VRM temperatures, but we aren’t able to test this. Pleasingly, both the pipes and fins are fully made from copper and have been given an attractive black nickel coating.

The unit’s single 120mm fan comes pre-attached to the radiator, and though you can access the screws that hold it in place through the back, it’s irregular form factor means it will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace or upgrade. Like the pump unit, it also lights up a cool blue when on, and again there’s no way to disable this. The multi-coloured 4-pin PWM cable isn’t braided, and though this isn’t a major criticism by any means, it’s still worth bringing up at this price point.
Rather than having mounting holes on the radiator as usual, which would be impractical with the circular design, Zalman has fitted the Reserator 3 Max with a plastic bracket with 120mm mounts. This will let you attach it directly to an exhaust mount, or to a second 120mm fan of your choosing for a push pull configuration. We did enjoy not having to align the radiator with a fan to install it, as this can often be fiddly and frustrating, but the bracket itself is really rather lightweight and flimsy, especially when compared with the rest of the unit.
Cooler installation hasn’t always been Zalman’s strong point, and indeed we were far from thrilled upon discovering that we had to use eight small screws simply to attach the mounting plate to the waterblock – it felt like a big step back from Corsair’s magnetic plates. The backplate for sockets other than LGA2011 is solid metal, but the sticky pads used to hold it in place are annoying – we’ve found them to be unnecessary and they nearly always leave most of their sticky residue behind when you remove them. The supplied thermal paste is also just a tiny sachet that doesn’t feel very premium. All in all, there’s nothing out and out challenging about installing the Reserator 3 Max, it’s just more time consuming than it needs to be.

Modern CBOs are still the lot of enthusiasts. They provide excellent compatibility with memory modules of any size, remove hot air from the case, demonstrate good temperature performance and allow you to achieve high frequencies when overclocking processors. The disadvantage is a very significant price tag, which makes the purchase of such solutions justified only if you have a processor with an appropriate cost. nine0003
A few months ago, we received a ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max water cooling system for testing, which also has the above advantages. Unfortunately, it is more expensive than the «top» traditional air cooling systems, and the high efficiency provided at the maximum rotational speed of the cooler blades is accompanied by too high a noise level.
Recently, ZALMAN introduced a solution with a similar design, but equipped with a large heatsink and two 120mm fans. The novelty was called ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual , and now we have the opportunity to study its efficiency and noise performance by comparing it with a more affordable “brother” in the line and a number of classic coolers.

As you can see, ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual is compatible with all modern and even some outdated processor sockets. But, given the cost of such devices, it is clearly intended to cool the «top» modern processor with an unlocked multiplier. nine0003
We note a rather high declared noise level — up to 46.6 dB at maximum fan speeds. At the same time, at a speed of 1000 rpm, the manufacturer indicates a quite comfortable value of 23. 2 dB. We have yet to study the actual noise performance in the testing process.
Packaging and contents
The package of the tested cooling system attracts attention with its impressive size and beautiful, strict design. On the front side, we see an image of the device inside, and its name is contained on an iridescent hologram. nine0003
The reverse side of the box is notable for the front and rear images of the CBO, as well as a description of its main advantages in 8 languages, including Russian. So, here the manufacturer noted:
- the optimally designed Quadro radiator — its design includes four separate radiators interconnected by tubes;
- increased corrosion resistance due to the Black Pearl nickel-plated coating; nine0226
- the presence of a cooling pad that maximizes the cooling effect;
- fast heat transfer due to microchannels in the copper base;
- built-in water block high efficiency low noise water pump;
- efficient cooling of the power supply;
- blue LED lighting for water block and fans;
- the presence of a universal mounting system in the kit, which makes it possible to install the device in most ATX cases; nine0226
- excellent tightness, easy installation and maintenance.
Also on the official website of the manufacturer noted the use of advanced refrigerant in the system to improve cooling efficiency.
On the sidewalls there is information about the cooler certification (CE, RoHS) and its specification. The cooling system itself is made in South Korea.
The tested novelty is supplied in a plastic blister, which provides protection from external influences during its transportation. nine0003
ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual is quite large. It includes the following components:
- universal reinforcement plate and metal mounts for different platforms;
- screw set;
- ZALMAN ZM-STG2M thermal paste in a bag;
- four nuts;
- four brackets with eight plugs;
- four plastic pads; nine0226
- plastic and cardboard spacers;
- installation guide;
- sticker with manufacturer’s logo.
This set of components allows you to install a cooling system on any modern platform without difficulties and additional costs. We note the presence in the kit of ZALMAN ZM-STG2M thermal paste with the ability to work in the temperature range from -40 to +150 ° . The solution in the form of a package does not imply its reuse, but the mixture itself is only 1 gram. nine0003
Appearance and design
The novelty includes: a water block, a radiator with two fans and two connecting hoses.
Active cooling is provided by two 120mm fans. They are attached with screws to a plastic structure that contains a heatsink.
It, in turn, has holes for attaching the cooling system to the brackets. We will consider the process of installing the cooler in more detail in the corresponding section. nine0003
The water block, familiar to us from the ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max, has a pleasant appearance due to the combination of silver and black. When power is applied, they are complemented by a blue backlight. The water block itself circulates liquid around the cooling system at a rate of 90 liters per hour. It uses a standard 3-pin connector to supply power to it.
The concentric circles formed during the polishing process are visible on the base. This fact cannot be attributed to disadvantages, because a slight roughness increases the surface area, which should have a positive effect on heat transfer. Note the large dimensions of the base (diameter 54 mm, area 22.9sq. cm), as well as its manufacture from pure copper, which will allow you to quickly and efficiently remove heat from the heat-spreading cover of the processor.
The ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual cooling system radiator consists of four elements: two external and two internal. The thickness of the plates used in them is 0.18 mm, and the distance between them is 2.2 mm at the edge of the radiators and 1.4 mm in the middle.
The heatsink is completely made of copper, and the tubes and plates are coated with a layer of nickel to provide anti-corrosion protection. A single-circuit tube system conducts the heated liquid throughout the structure, thereby ensuring the most even distribution of heat. nine0003
The pipes inside the radiators have a standard diameter of 6 mm, while the connecting pipes have a diameter of 7 mm. We also note the presence of solder at the points of contact of the plates with the tubes, which should provide a higher thermal conductivity of this design.
2 ZALMAN ZE1225BSM fans are used for active radiator cooling. And if in the case of the ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max, the manufacturer announced the rotation speed of the blades from 1000 to 2200 rpm, then here the maximum speed indicator is 2300 rpm. The rotation speed is controlled by PWM method, and the turntables are energized using two 4-pin connectors. Both of them are connected to a hub on the cooler design, from which one wire leads to the motherboard to power them. Thus, one 3-pin and one 4-pin power connectors are enough to connect the cooling system under test. nine0003
The type of bearings used in spinners is listed as «Long Life Bearing», that is, bearings with a long life cycle. At the same time, the manufacturer does not mention the features of their design, as well as the time between failures. Note that the fans are equipped with blue LED-backlighting without the ability to turn it off.
Installation process
The installation of the ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual cooling system is described in great detail in the user manual that is included in the package and is available for download on the official website of the manufacturer. Below we will share our own experience of installing new items in systems based on different processors. nine0003
First, the metal plate corresponding to the platform used must be attached to the water block using the eight supplied screws.
We install four studs and the same number of plastic overlays on the reinforcing plate, and also glue the central gasket.
We install the resulting design on the back of the motherboard. Used plastic pads prevent damage to elements located near the processor socket. nine0003
We remove the protective film from the copper base of the water block and apply the thermal interface to the heat distribution cover of the processor. Next, install the water block and fix it with four screws. As you can see, there is no overlap of any connectors, which is a significant advantage compared to many coolers that limit the height of memory modules used or even heatsinks on the elements of the processor power circuit.
The next step is to install the radiator. To do this, your case must have an appropriate space of at least 276 x 122 x 73 mm. We mount bolts and plugs on the brackets, and fix the resulting structure on the cooler itself. And, finally, the final touch is the installation of a heatsink with fans into the case using 8 supplied screws. nine0003
This procedure looks simple, but some difficulties may arise, as happened in our case.
As you can see, it is impossible to install the tested CRM in the bench case in the form in which the developer proposes to implement it. This is primarily due to the lack of free space in it for such an overall design. Also, the screw fastenings are the same for only one half of the cooler (near the rear side of the case). But even in this way, it was not possible to install the cooler due to the close location of the additional power supply connector for the processor. Therefore, the radiator was fixed in the housing in the only possible way in this case — without drilling new holes and with only one bolt. nine0003
Note that although the memory modules themselves are not limited in size by the processor cooling system, their upper latches may be blocked. But, again, it all depends on the thoughtfulness of this aspect in each particular case.
Installation in AMD based systems is almost the same, using a different metal mount and different holes in the universal plate, and a different plastic center spacer. nine0003
As with the Intel platform, the plastic elements used protect the back of the motherboard from damage.
After removing the protective film and applying thermal paste, fasten the water block itself with screws. Its mount is very compact and does not interfere with nearby components and connectors.
With the installation of the heatsink, the situation is similar to the Intel platform — the bench case does not allow you to properly install and fix the cooling system. nine0003
But even after the «Spartan» mounting on one bolt, the design is quite functional.
Note that the installation difficulties described above are features of the case only, which is designed to mount a more compact CBO up to 62 mm high. Therefore, in order to be sure that your computer is compatible with the device under test, make sure that there is free space for installing a heatsink with fans, the total dimensions of which are 276 x 122 x 73, as well as the necessary holes for mounting them. nine0003

The tested ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual cooling system showed good efficiency at maximum rotation speed, obviously yielding only to the SilverStone Heligon SST-HE01 cooler. Reducing the fan speed to 1800 rpm allows you to get a lower level of sound background, but at the cost of this will increase the temperature of the processors by several degrees. In this mode, the capabilities of the novelty are similar to those in the ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max single-fan system at a speed of 2300 rpm. nine0003
With a fan speed of 1300 rpm, the efficiency of the ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual cooling system decreases even more, but it still allows you to get good temperature performance even when cooling a six-core AMD Phenom II X6 1100T overclocked to 4 GHz.
At idle or at half load, the difference between the three fan modes is small and amounts to 1-2 degrees.
Note that due to the peculiarities of the case of the bench computer, there is a slight overlap of the cooler, which to a certain extent interferes with the movement of air flows and could adversely affect the efficiency of the new product during testing. nine0003
ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual performs well on a stand with a 300W heating element. So, even at the minimum speed of rotation of the blades, the temperature stabilized at 56.3°C, and with an increase in the input voltage of the fans to 12 V, it amounted to 53.1°C. Here the use of a more bulky design and two turntables affects, which allows you to get a significant advantage over a single-fan «brother». Again, in this case, only «top» classic solutions can compete. nine0003

Unfortunately, the rather high efficiency of the tested CBO is accompanied by an annoying noise level, and the comfortable value (1550 rpm) is remarkable for a higher processor temperature. However, even in this mode, the capabilities of the novelty are enough to effectively cool the overclocked test CPUs.
Conclusions
The release of the water cooling system ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual , of course, meant the creation of a more efficient version of the «smaller brother» in the face of ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max. Well, we note that the manufacturer was quite successful in this venture. In terms of cooling capabilities, the new product actually showed itself very well and was able to compete with most of the classic air-cooled coolers we tested earlier. nine0003
Unfortunately, the tested CBO is still too loud at maximum fan speeds, so operation in this mode will affect acoustic comfort. On the other hand, acceptable noise is possible at a rotation speed of about 1500 rpm, and the efficiency of the cooler in this case is enough to cool overclocked processors and maintain their temperatures at an acceptable level.
The novelty boasts many features, among which, first of all, we note an exemplary package, a completely copper nickel-plated radiator and blue LED lighting. Together with high efficiency, this makes it an interesting and noteworthy solution. nine0003
At the same time, before buying ZALMAN Reserator 3 Max Dual, be sure to pay attention to the presence of free space inside your PC case to accommodate a radiator with fans with a total height of 73 mm, as well as holes required for attaching brackets. Fortunately, in the manual on the official website, the manufacturer describes in detail the installation process and the features of mounting the cooler.

- full copper nickel-plated heatsink;
- compatible with all current platforms;
- the presence of LED-backlighting;
- use of advanced refrigerant with improved thermal conductivity;
- easy installation thanks to complete brackets.
Features:
- air outlet outside the case;
- The compact dimensions of the water block do not interfere with the installation of RAM modules; nine0226
- the need for a place in the body for fastening a CBO with a height of 73 mm and the corresponding mounting holes.

Advantages: beautiful view
Disadvantages: I bought the first one worked for a week, gave it away under warranty, this one worked for 8 months and the pump died again, I bought 9900 on 3 fans I don’t advise anyone else to take it
Comment: beautiful blue (blonde) made (crazy), makes noise (like chatting), in general, simply, our blonde, who understood
Dmitry N. , 07.12.2019
Pros: Cools well when it works. nine0003
Disadvantages: Noisy system, weak and poor pump design. The price does not match the quality.
Comment: This system worked for me exactly 1 year and 1 month. I noticed the processor overheating, it turned out that the water block was depressurized. Liquid leaked onto the video card. I contacted the official representative office of Zalman in Russia and in the USA with a question about the possibility of purchasing a water block separately. They didn’t answer me anything, which is not very nice for a reputable company, but this is a useful experience. in this case, the absence of an answer is also an answer. nine0734 As a result, I dismantled the water block. its main body is made of plastic, it is almost impossible to restore the sealing. disassembly is one-time, by tightening the screws a second time they will no longer tighten the case with sufficient force, they will scroll.
Ivan I., 04/27/2019
Pluses: Normal cooling, but did not notice the difference with the LQ320 that fits into any case. nine0003
Disadvantages: 1. In a year and a half, 2 such dropsies failed (pump). Very unreliable.
2. Difficult to find housing for installation.
3. Noisy coolers.Comment: In general, a negative impression of the model.

Advantages: cools AMD-9590, beautiful, powerful.
Drawbacks: Pump? nine0003
Comment: I bought it in the summer of 2015 and entrusted the installation to my son… it was my mistake! The system was not pulled to the end! But the strangest thing is that it still cooled the percent. in idle time 9590 warmed up to 45 degrees! But recently the pump has begun to podglyuchivat, it either works or not! I decided to sort out the computer and found that the water block was almost hanging on the process! pulled the right way! Now at idle 30 degrees! Almost a year! For almost a long year, the computer worked without turning off with a water block somehow fixed on the processor. I think this is still an indicator of a good CBO!

Advantages: beautiful appearance, good cooling, easy to assemble.
Disadvantages: coolers at medium and high speeds are noisy but tolerable
Comment: I have been using it for 4 months and it works without problems, AMD FX-9590 processor in idle 35 degrees, under load 60-65.
Name hidden, 03/07/2019
Advantages: It certainly looks beautiful as always, two-section, beautiful pump with blue illumination
Disadvantages: Native fans (4pin) are very noisy even at minimum speed (~1100rmp). The pump starts to vibrate at speeds over 1250rmp
Comment: The installation turned out to be very simple both in assembly and installation in the case itself, I was able to fasten to the ceiling of the case with 7 bolts out of eight available. With a pump speed of no more than 1200rmp and fans 900rmp (changed native to Corsair) noise is less than 30Db. At the same time, it cools more or less normally, but top-end air coolers will still be better at a similar noise level. Proc FX 8350 slightly overclocked to 4400, has a temperature of about 34 degrees in idle, about 50 under load, but this is in winter. In summer, everything becomes 10 degrees more, but the air is exactly the same.
Vasily S., 26.02.2019
nine0003Advantages: High-quality fasteners for bolts, and not like some snaps to plastic.
Disadvantages: The radiator is very greasy.
The tubes are short… Rumbled like a waterfall at a speed of more than 1000
worked only in a horizontal position, when I put the computer vertically, it immediately overheated. From 40 to 65 in 10 seconds and the computer was chopped off.

Pros: Fairly effective CBO.
Disadvantages: Very noisy. It is difficult to install and choose a case for it because of its size. The fans are clearly not the best, they start making noise right away. In one of the two systems I have, the pump failed after six months.
