AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X Processor Opinion

Children, sit in a circle, I’ll tell you a fairy tale. Once upon a time there was a boy named Jimmy Keller. Once the irreparable happened — he grew up, became Jim and came up with the best thing since the sliced \u200b\u200bloaf with butter, a sprat and a slice of lemon. That thing was the Zen architecture that came out with a bunch of processors. Both mainstream and HEDT. About one of the latest models, called AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X , I’ll tell you now.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X video review

If you don’t want to read the text, watch the video!

Thank you for the location of the Kiev-IT computer accessories store.

    Architectural features

Keller’s merit, however, lies in the trick, thanks to which AMD, in my humble opinion, justified itself after the ficus fiasco. This is a scheme for building processors through Core CompleX, or CCX.

Unlike the FX series, where the emphasis was on clusters of two cores with one FPU and cache, which is why they were called under-semi-cores and rightly done (and AMD was also sued for this later), CCX shared L3 cache of 8 MB, and that’s it. Each CCX can contain up to four cores, each processor can contain up to four CCX. It turns out up to sixteen cores. Sixteen. Nuclei. With multithreading, yes.

    P. S. As they say — from theory to practice, and in a month AMD Ryzen 9 3950X will be released, on socket AM4, 16/32 with boost up to 4.7 GHz.

    What about High-End Desktop?

Of course, this situation is relevant only in the HEDT sector, in the consumer corner the maximum was “some useless” 8 cores / 16 threads (before the release of 3950X). It’s funny to write this myself, chesslovo. In general, to say that Intel has broken the pattern is to say nothing. The Azure Company, relaxed after the failure of the ficuses, could not offer anything even remotely beneficial.

More powerful, yes, any day. More optimized — of course. More streaming — no. More profitable — given the shortage of 14-nanometer pebbles, not even close.

    Back to business

Now, about the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X itself. This is the youngest version of the «Termitter» of the first generation, the youngest of three. It would seem that this is a complete analogue of the laughingstock from the Skylake-X series, the Intel Core i5-7640X, a four-core four-thread processor on a fat socket 2066, which at the time of writing this material cost more than 19 on Rozetka00X.

This is, of course, an exception, and even on the used market, the cost of Threadripper is 30 percent higher, but the point is that their comparison suggests itself. But there is no equality and will not be, and the point is the number of threads. Threadripper has four (!) times more of them. And no, the significantly better performance of the Intel Core i5 with memory does not compensate for this.

The frequency of the cores is even higher than the analogue from the AM4 socket side, AMD Ryzen 1800X. In Ryazhenka, the boost goes only up to 3.7 GHz for a pair of cores, while in 1900X is honest 4 GHz across ALL cores. Add to that support for quad-channel memory and 64 PCIe lanes, and you have a processor as versatile as can be. Both in games and in tasks for the TR4 socket.

The Core i5, I remind you, has only four cores, albeit with a frequency of 4 GHz / boost up to 4.2 GHz, and a total of 16 PCIe lanes. Therefore, neither for games nor for work, it is not suitable. This is essentially a gag for LGA2066, an analogue of the GT 730/1030, and for a $250+ model, this is a little shameful.

A few words about 64 lanes

Also, before I forget, Threadripper’s argument about 64 PCIe lanes. Why so many? Honestly, I thought exactly the same until I needed to install a 4x USB 3.0 expansion card in my Ryzen 7 1800X computer. And since I have five out of six SATA3 and one PCIe x4 for the system drive in my system, I had to cut the performance of the top PCIe x16 slot, making it x8.

Under the long-awaited upgrade to the GTX 1080 Ti, the performance of which is just beginning to be cut from the lack of bandwidth in PCIe 3.0 x8, this is a shame. It’s not critical, the performance loss is 2-3% on the strength, all the more so — I took Ti-ku for 11 GB GDDR5X, and not for a ton of CUDA. But it’s just embarrassing. And, in fact, this is the maximum that will pull out my PC on video cards.

And it’s also bad that I needed PCIe x2 for the USB expansion card! Not even x4, x2! As a result, six PCIe 3.0 lanes are flushed down the toilet. Hashtag sadness. And again, I’m left with no adjacent PCIe lanes. I can’t install a video capture card, I can’t install an extension for another couple of SATA3 . .. Even the second M.2 NVMe is now unavailable for me! How the system on AMD Threadripper fights with this, I have no idea, this must be checked in practice. The bottom line is that 64 PCIe lanes is not a luxury, but a reserve for the future if you plan to make money on your PC. Small business, video rendering or 3D, work with data arrays — it doesn’t matter. The point, I think, is clear.

What else is interesting about the Threadripper 1900X? L3 cache — 16 MB, 180 W heat pack and a crazy package with an awesome opening method. Exactly what is awesome, unboxing such happiness can cause kreygasm in an unprepared viewer. And the equipment is rich, there is even a branded orange screwdriver for screwing in the screws! One thing is bad about the box — it is glossy on the front and rounded inward, which is why it is unrealistic to photograph it without glare. It’s also funny that the TR4 socket uses an LGA scheme, that is, the legs are not on the processor, but in the socket itself, while the processor is flat from the bottom, like my jokes.

    Test process

The test bench is as follows:

    • AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X Processor
    • be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4
    • Motherboard ASUS ROG Extreme X399
    • RAM Apacer DDR4 4GB 2400 MHz + RAM Apacer NOX 8GB 2666 MHz
    • 8 GB DDR4 die
    • 16 GB DDR4 stick
    • SSD Samsung 850 EVO Pro 120GB
    • Transcend StoreJet 25M3S 2TB Hard Drive
    • Video card ASUS ROG RX470 4GB
    • be quiet! Dark Power Pro 1200W
    • be quiet! Silent Base 601 (not really, AeroCool Strike-X Air)

Mother ASUS ROG Extreme X399 , as well as the video card, were provided by ASUS. What can you say about a motherboard for 700 bucks without spreading over one and a half volumes of «War and Peace»? Brutal cooling on an eight-phase power supply, eight DIMM slots and one DIMM-2, four full-size PCIe slots for dual-slot video cards. Detailed review coming soon.

I also remind you that the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X was needed and important for testing not something there, but 4x Crossfire on four ASUS ROG RX 470 4GB . And for Apacer’s crazy experiment with DDR4, details are here . You can also find all the benchmarks of the processor by the link, but for games you will have to wait a bit, they will be in the RX 470 review. No, oddly enough. And it’s all about the support for the TR4 socket. If for AM4 Lisa Su swore by her mother (I suppose with the MSI X470 Gaming Plus model, but this is inaccurate) that this socket will support three generations of Ryzen … then there were no such guarantees for TR4.

Next, the first generation Threadripper ages differently than, say, a server Xeon five generations older. Even AM4 processors have fallen in price, breaking through the floor of adequacy. I grabbed my AMD Ryzen 7 1800X for 5000 hryvnia! 5000 UAH, Ka-a-rl, $250, for 16 streams with boost up to 3.7 GHz.

Threadripper even the smallest model will cost significantly more, and X399 motherboards, with all their many advantages, will cost as much as my working PC. Is it a joke, ASUS X399 Zenith Extreme costs more than Huawei P20 Pro! Yes, in return we get 300 MHz frequencies, two additional.
