Using MSI Afterburner, we ramped up the card’s power limit by 20 percent, the maximum allowed. Voltage increases were not an option, but even so we were quickly able to reach an overclock of 1,050MHz – the highest frequency we were allowed to use. This is already a not-too-shabby 14 percent increase, but after unlocking Afterburner’s limits we were amazed to find that we could add a further 100MHz before the card started acting like it had had one too many. This final frequency of 1,150MHz is equal to a whopping 24 percent increase in raw speed.
The memory was also game for a bit of tweaking, and we managed a final frequency here of 1.55GHz (6.2GHz effective), which is akin to an 11 percent increase.

Revisiting the GTX 750 Ti
When we first reviewed the GTX 750 Ti, we managed to add 135MHz to its core clock speed, which at the time was the most that the drivers would allow. This was a common experience amongst reviewers, so Nvidia raised the amount of overclocking headroom on the card in its next WHQL driver, 335.23. As such, given how closely priced the GTX 750 Ti is to the R7 265, we decided to revisit Nvidia’s card with the newer drivers. While we didn’t notice any significant change in stock performance, the main reason for our doing so was to see if we could squeeze any extra juice from it.
In the end, we were able to add 185MHz to the base clock, taking it to 1,205MHz. This is 50MHz more than before and a tasty 18 percent overclock overall. At this speed, the card’s boost clock was a whopping 1,270MHz. We were unable to improve our memory overclock, which we left at 1.65GHz (6.6GHz), a 22 percent gain.
We’ve included overclocked results for both the GTX 750 Ti and the R7 265 in the charts below.

In February 2014, a new graphics card from the AMD Volcanic Islands family, the AMD Radeon R7 265, was officially introduced. It is designed to take a place between the AMD Radeon R7 260X and AMD Radeon R9270 and compete for the attention of buyers with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti. Note that the recommended price of the novelty (and the competitor from NVIDIA) with reference parameters is declared at $150.
In fact, the AMD Radeon R7 265 is nothing more than the well-known AMD Radeon HD 7850 with a graphics core overclocked to 925 MHz and an increased TDP level (from 130 to 150 W). Also, the novelty boasts support for the AMD Mantle API.
For more clarity, let’s compare the technical characteristics of current mid-range AMD video cards:

The tested modification of AMD Radeon R7 265 differs from the reference version by the original ASUS DirectCU II cooling system and high-quality hardware components. As for the printed circuit board and power subsystem, in this case, AMD did not create a «reference» sample, but allowed its partners to use their own developments in this area.
Packing and contents
The ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5 video card comes in a traditional ASUS box made of thick cardboard and decorated with high-quality printing in the corporate style. In addition to the name of the manufacturer and model, on its front side, we note the mention of the amount and type of video memory used, as well as the presence of the GPU Tweak utility in the package. The main advantages of the novelty are: the proprietary DirectCU II cooling system and an improved element base, made according to the Super Alloy Power concept. It includes:
- solid capacitors with up to 50,000 hours longer life and 20% more high temperature endurance;
- ferrite core chokes.
The above benefits provide 15% more performance, 35°C lower power cell temperatures, and 2. 5x longer graphics card life.
The reverse side of the box is traditionally reserved for a more detailed description of the benefits indicated on the front side. Also here is a schematic representation of the interface panel.
The list of system requirements for the computer where you plan to install the video card is located on one of the sides of the box. Based on the recommendations, the power supply in such a system must have a power of at least 500 W and deliver at least 24 A through the + 12V power line. As for the additional power connectors, the ASUS Radeon R7 265 DirectCU II requires a single 6-pin PCIe cable.
In addition to the standard documentation and software CD, we found a DVI to D-Sub adapter and an AMD CrossFireX bridge bundled with the graphics adapter, which can be safely called an excellent set for an affordable video card.
To output an image on the tested novelty, a reference set of interfaces is provided:
- 1 x DVI-I;
- 1 x DVI-D;
- 1 x HDMI;
- 1 x DisplayPort.
The following resolutions are supported:
- digital — up to 4096 x 2160;
- analog — up to 2048 x 1536.
Appearance and element base
The novelty is made on a relatively compact black printed circuit board with a matte finish. As you can see, the main principles for the location of key elements are quite standard: the graphics core, slightly offset from the center of the textolite, is surrounded by video memory chips, while the elements of the power subsystem are located on both sides.
The tested video card is powered by an eight-phase scheme (six phases for the GPU and one phase for the PLL and memory chips). The element base is recruited in accordance with the Super Alloy Power concept and includes only high-quality components: solid capacitors and ferrite core chokes, which improves the stability and reliability of the graphics adapter, as well as extending its service life.
The graphics core power subsystem is implemented on the DIGI + VRM ASP1215AH digital PWM controller, information about which, unfortunately, is not widely available.
In addition to the PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot, ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5 adapter is powered through one additional connector located on the right side of the video card. As recommended by AMD, the 6-pin option is used. By tradition, when testing video cards from ASUS, once again we note the competent work of design engineers from the Taiwanese manufacturer, who took care of the convenience of connecting and disconnecting the power cable.
To implement AMD CrossFireX technology on ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5, one connector is used to connect the corresponding bridge, which allows you to combine two video accelerators for joint calculation of graphic effects.
The reverse side of the printed circuit board is notable except for the fixing screws of the cooling system, one of which is covered with a warranty sticker, which means that if you remove the cooler yourself, you, unfortunately, will lose the warranty.
The heroine of our review is based on the AMD Curacao graphics chip manufactured using the 28-nm process technology. It consists of 1024 universal shader pipelines, 32 rasterization units and 64 texture units. Since the ASUS Radeon R7 265 DirectCU II comes with a reference frequency formula, the graphics core is able to dynamically accelerate up to the recommended 925 MHz.
The memory of the novelty, with a total capacity of 2 GB, is assembled using 8 ELPIDA W2032BBBG-6A-F chips with a capacity of 256 MB each, which operate at a frequency recommended by AMD of 1400 MHz (effective value — 5600 MHz). Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out through a 256-bit bus, which is capable of passing 179.2 GB of information per second.
Cooling system
The video accelerator with DirectCU II proprietary cooling system installed takes up two expansion slots and has a total length of 240 mm (according to measurements in our test lab).
The cooler consists of a relatively small heatsink with 37 aluminum fins and two fans with an impeller diameter of 74 mm, mounted on a plastic casing that covers the entire structure from above.
Two copper heatpipes 8 mm in diameter are used to evenly distribute heat over the entire area of the radiator. Note that the radiator fins and heat pipes are covered with a layer of nickel, which is designed to reduce the drop in CO efficiency during operation, caused by the oxidation of metals. As standard for DirectCU II coolers, heat pipes directly contact the surface of the GPU through a small layer of thermal paste.
As you can see, the main cooling system, using a special thermal interface, is in direct contact with two of the eight memory chips, while the remaining six and the power elements of the power stabilization module do not have additional cooling.
The heatpipes are tightly mounted on the heatsink fins without the use of solder.
During automatic fan speed control, in maximum load mode, the graphics core heated up to 69degrees, and the cooler, judging by the monitoring readings, worked at 56% of its maximum capacity. The noise level in this mode of operation can be subjectively described as quiet.
After forcibly increasing the fan speed to the maximum level, the GPU temperature dropped to 62 degrees. The noise level generated can be described as «below average, comfortable for extended use». By tradition, we remind you that such a mode of operation in everyday use is unlikely, since the rotational speed of the blades was forced to the maximum level, solely to measure the «safety margin» of CO.
When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically reduced to reduce their power consumption and heat dissipation. In this mode, the GPU temperature does not exceed 36 degrees, and the noise level is very quiet.

Advantages:
I was attracted to this video card by not bad declared characteristics and price.
Disadvantages:
After I bought and tested this vidyuhi, I was not very satisfied. The declared characteristics are somehow not felt, many games (which, in theory, should normally run at such indicators) do not run even after updating the drivers. Although if you take the tighter geforce with more modest characteristics that I had before, then its efficiency looks much better.
Comment:
In general, of course, the video card is mediocre.
Mowgli Wild, 01/06/2015
Advantages:
Large size copper heatsink, large soleplate, non-fluxed heatsink tubes, allow sandpaper to remove plaque from copper, improving cooling. The chip is chasing if you know how to do it.
Disadvantages:
They simply do not exist
Comment:
So, the review came from Wild Mowgli. It is a pity that at this time it is no longer on sale 🙁
I bought a video card for games. And she approached me, in plain text! I chose according to the characteristics, weeded out with poor cooling, and chose this one. A large copper radiator, a large sole, non-fluxed radiator tubes make it possible to remove plaque from copper with sandpaper, improving cooling. The chip is chasing if you know how to do it.
Guest, 07/19/2014
Advantages:
2 very quiet coolers, you can hardly even hear it. The cooling system is perfect, it does not heat up just like that. All my games run great! Originally bought for video and photo editors! 256 bits DDR5!
Weaknesses:
none.
Comment:
For the money this option is the best!!!
