Radeon R7 250X Review — Graphics Card — Tom’s Hardware

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

Except for the Radeon R9 290-series cards, sporting AMD’s Hawaii GPU, all of the other Radeon R7 and R9 boards we’ve seen are re-branded versions of the Radeon HD 7000 family. The Radeon R9 280X falls between the Radeon HD 7970 and 7970 GHz Edition. The Radeon R7 270 and 270X are based on the Pitcairn GPU. The Radeon R7 260X hosts the same graphics processor as the Radeon HD 7790.

Clearly, the company feels that the first-generation GCN graphics cards still have a lot to offer, especially with a handful of clock rate tweaks. We wouldn’t necessarily disagree; the Radeon line-up offers a viable spectrum of performance, from the entry-level Radeon R7 240 to the flagship Radeon R9 290X.

We’d obviously prefer to be testing genuinely new hardware, rather than re-badged versions of old models. With that said, there seems to be a formula for making already-seen graphics cards more successful: increase performance and reduce price. We saw this from Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 770 which, at launch, was essentially a highly overclocked GeForce GTX 680 with a $50 price cut. Even more impressive was AMD’s Radeon R9 280X, which surfaced looking a lot like an overclocked Radeon HD 7970 at its core, yet came to market $150 cheaper than the product it replaced. Of course, the R9 280X jumped to $470 shortly thereafter, while the GTX 770 fell to $320, but that’s another story…

With all of that in mind, when AMD told us that it was re-badging the Radeon HD 7770 as a «new» Radeon R7 250X, we were really hoping the company would increase clock rates and drop the price so we could get excited about it. Disappointingly, the frequencies aren’t changing, though AMD claims pricing should fall to $100 (as of this writing, there is no online availability to confirm).

Typical Newegg Price $130 $90 Radeon HD 7770:$110Radeon R7 250X:$99 MSRP $132 $130

A $100 mark sounds really nice compared to the Radeon HD 7770’s $160 when it launched. But it looks a lot less impressive after a look on Newegg. The 7770 has shown up for as little as $100, although the current average lands around $110. If the the R7 250X can keep that figure down at $100, we’ll certainly take the discount. Though, again, it’s not something we’re going to get excited about.

To be frank, if I didn’t think that the Radeon HD 7770 was such an important mainstream graphics card in the first place, I would have probably posted a small news item about the name change and continued on with my work. But in my opinion, the HD 7770 (and now R7 250X) is the most important budget-oriented graphics card available. At $110, it’s the cheapest option that lets you play most games comfortably at 1920×1080 with low to medium detail settings.

Packing and contents

The novelty comes in a small, vertically oriented box, designed in the corporate style. In addition to mentioning the amount and type of video memory used, the front side notes the use of a proprietary iCooler cooler and the presence of software for managing the video card (HIS iTurbo) in the package. The use of the internal PCI Express 3.0 interface deserves special mention. nine0003

On the back of the box, there is a mention of support for a number of AMD technologies (AMD HD3D, AMD PowerTune), as well as a list of key features of the video card.

The list of system requirements for the computer in which you plan to install this graphics adapter is also on the reverse side. Based on the recommendations, the power supply should be at least 400W and one 6-pin PCIe cable. nine0003

The package of the tested model includes only a disk with drivers and utilities and a user manual, which is quite logical for a video card of this price range.

The HIS R7 250X iCooler (h350XF1G) has the following set of interfaces for image output:

  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 1 x HDMI;
  • 1 x D-Sub.

The following resolutions are supported:

  • digital — up to 4096 x 2160;
  • analog — up to 2048 x 1536.

Appearance and element base

The HIS R7 250X iCooler (h350XF1G) video card is made on a very compact blue printed circuit board, which is very similar in design to the AMD Radeon 7 reference version. The difference between these two models is the presence of a 6-pin auxiliary power connector on the right side of the tested novelty. The remaining principles of the layout of on-board elements are the same for them. nine0003

The HIS R7 250X iCooler (h350XF1G) model is powered according to a quite standard three-phase scheme, where two phases are reserved for the needs of the graphics core, and one more for the memory chips.

The GPU power subsystem is implemented on a two-phase digital PWM controller APW7098, located on the front side of the printed circuit board.

In addition to the PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot, the video card is powered through one additional connector located on the right side of the PCB. As recommended by AMD, the 6-pin option is used. Separately, we note the convenience of connecting and, most importantly, disconnecting the PCIe power cable. nine0003

The reverse side of the circuit board is notable for various electrical components, cooling system mounting screws and a number of labels with service information.

Recall that the AMD Radeon HD 7770, an updated version of which is the AMD Radeon R7 250X, uses one connector to connect the corresponding bridge to implement AMD CrossFireX technology. The tested model supports this technology at the software level, which will allow you to combine two video accelerators to jointly calculate graphic effects without an AMD CrossFireX bridge. nine0003

The heroine of our review is based on the AMD Cape Verde XT graphics chip manufactured using the 28-nm process technology. It consists of 640 universal shader pipelines, 16 rasterization units and 40 texture units. Since the HIS R7 250X iCooler (h350XF1G) comes with a reference frequency formula, the graphics core operates at the recommended 1000 MHz.

The memory of the novelty, with a total capacity of 1 GB, is assembled using 4 SK hynix H5GQ2h34AFR-T2C chips with a capacity of 256 MB each, which operate at an effective frequency of 4500 MHz recommended by AMD. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out through a 128-bit bus, which is capable of passing 72.0 GB of information per second. nine0003

Cooling system

The video card with the proprietary iCooler cooling system installed occupies two expansion slots and has a total length of 170 mm according to the official website (182 mm according to measurements in our test lab).

The cooler consists of a small one-piece radiator with fins and one fan with an impeller diameter of 87 mm, mounted on a plastic casing. nine0003

Apistek GA91O2H is used as a turntable. The nominal voltage of its operation is 12 V, and the current strength is 0.35 A, which results in a power of 4.2 watts.

With automatic fan speed control, in the maximum load mode, the graphics core heated up to 59 degrees, and the cooler, judging by the monitoring readings, worked at 36% of its maximum power. Subjectively, the noise level at 2150 rpm can be described as below average. At the same time, it was quite comfortable for long-term work near the PC. nine0003

After forcibly increasing the fan speed to the maximum level (3900 rpm), the GPU temperature dropped to 53 degrees. The generated noise exceeded the average level and became uncomfortable for constant use of the video card.

When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically reduced to reduce their power consumption and heat dissipation. In this mode, the temperature of the GPU did not exceed 37 degrees, and the level of generated noise was quite quiet, but with little background. nine0003

As a result, the proprietary iCooler cooling system proved to be a high-quality, reliable and sufficiently productive solution that copes with its immediate tasks without any problems and will not disturb you with a high noise level during everyday use.
