1375MHz

Memory speed is one aspect that determines memory bandwidth.

Shading patterns

Shading units (or stream processors) are small processors in a graphics card that are responsible for processing various aspects of an image.

texture units (TMUs)

TMUs take texture units and map them to the geometric layout of the 3D scene. More TMUs generally means texture information is processed faster.

ROPs

ROPs are responsible for some of the final steps of the rendering process, such as writing the final pixel data to memory and for performing other tasks such as anti-aliasing to improve the appearance of graphics.

Memory

effective memory speed

5500MHz

5500MHz

The effective memory clock speed is calculated from the size and data transfer rate of the memory. A higher clock speed can give better performance in games and other applications.

What is the AMD Radeon R9 380

Our most affordable card

AMD’s new graphics lineup is the Radeon R9 380, which comes in

for just £155 in the 2GB configuration and £170 for the 4GB model.

It’s cheap for a card designed for high-end gaming, and AMD’s

doesn’t hold back on its ambitions — the firm believes this chip can handle top titles at 1440p.

The R9 prefix marks this as a complete gaming product, though be aware that this is not a Fury brand.

This means that it is made from last year’s silicon, with performance improvements

due to architectural tweaks and clock enhancements.

AMD Radeon R9 380 Under the Hood

The R9 380 is built around the Antigua core. This is a level lower than the Tonga Pro GPU in R9 285,

the latest card released from last year’s AMD range,

debuted an updated version of the Graphics Core Next architecture.

AMD not only stuck the old core inside the

new package, it also tweaked the internals to give the

better performance while consuming less power, which means the TDP has dropped slightly.

AMD also improved the speed — the R9 285 core at 918 MHz was raised to

to 970 MHz.

Inside the R9 380 is still made of

1792 stream processors divided into four shader engines. This

is the familiar Graphics Core Next layout that was in AMD hardware for

last four years

R9 380 is now available with 2GB or 4GB

GDDR5 memory clocked at 5700MHz, slightly faster than

than the old card’s 2GB RAM. The R9 380

182GB/s memory bandwidth is slightly better than the R9 285 at 176GB/s. our

Tests were carried out with the 4 GB card model.

Those memory

tweaks are the biggest changes in the modest update. So overall

configurations. The

R9 380 is a mid-sized card that typically

stretches 221mm from front to back, so it should fit in most ATX

cases and plenty of smaller ones. Requires two six-pin power

connectors and supports all current AMD features including Mantle,

Vulcan, TrueAudio and Virtual Super Resolution. Also supports

DirectX 12.

The new AMD card also introduces a couple of new

features. Eyefinity is more versatile, with support for five monitors in

landscape mode, custom resolutions, and less restrictive output options.

ZeroCore is used to put the GPU to sleep when the computer is idle,

which reduces power consumption.

AMD Radeon R9 380 — Analysis of results

The
R9 380 got off to a great start in the tests. In the first test, which is

is 3DMark Fire Strike, it easily beats the green team competition. At

1080p, the AMD graphics card scored 7620, almost 700 points above the

GTX 960, and was about 400 points ahead at 1440p.

The slot closed

when we started testing real games. In Battlefield 4

the AMD card was one frame at 1080p and one frame faster than the GTX

960 at 1440p. AMD hardware didn’t impress in Batman either, where its 1080p and 1440p average 92fps and 65fps are extremely comfortable, but beyond the GTX 960.

The AMD

card has started to turn the tables in BioShock Infinite. Its 1080p

79fps average falls behind the GTX 960, but that doesn’t really matter at such a high

average — and at 1440p the R9 380 51fps result is four frames

faster than the Nvidia hardware.

R9 380 is built with the rugged lead of

in Crysis 3. This is the hardest game in our suite of 1080p games.

the Radeon card averaged 50fps — six frames better than Nvidia’s. it’s

The 31fps average at 1440p is also playable, and one frame ahead of the GTX

960. AMD Metro: Last Light was also comfortably ahead of the AMD card; its

average 70fps resolution at 1080p was eight frames lower than Nvidia’s and was six

frames faster at 1440p.

Decent leadership of Radeon was supported by Unigine Heaven. In this

AMD card thermal performance was

inconsistent. We didn’t have any issues with heat or noise output, but our

test setup’s peak power consumption of 310 watts isn’t overly impressive. 23W

Of course less than the R9 285 needed, but more than the 196W

needed on our test rig with the GTX 960 on board.

9The 0002 Radeon fell behind Nvidia’s

card in several of our test games, but it took the lead in

most of our titles — as well as in both theory tests.

Apart from the competition, it has enough power for 1080p games, and it performs

AMD also supports 1440p: 30fps or better in every

game. In some situations, it even controlled the playable 4K frame rate.

bare

Please note that all of our tests were performed with 4 GB version

postcard. Tests have shown that dropping from 4 GB to 2 GB costs between

and three frames per second in most games, which does not affect

much now. However, for the future, we advise you to buy a 4 GB card.

AMD Radeon R9 380 Things to Consider

AMD’s traditional reference card design means that board partners have plenty of room to build their own cards.

Retail

prices for R9 chipsThe 380 ranges from £155 to £179, while the

are available right away. Models from Sapphire and XFX cost £155 and £156

respectively, and have cores clocked at 985MHz and 990MHz. However,

are both 2GB models, a move that will likely limit the impact of

overclocking.

More expensive models are more ambitious. The £165 XFX model is 2GB thanks to the

core and memory

boosted to 1030MHz and 5800MHz. Most

available £170 4gb version made by Sapphire and also comes

overclocked.

The most

of the R9 380 partner cards are at the higher end of the scale, but

Sapphire releases a compact model that still has modest overclocking, the

with a 980 MHz core. 170mm long, this

is perfect for small form factors.

Thus, although R9The 380 offers decent versatility, the older GTX 960 has more partner cards available. Prices range from

£152 to £209, with 4GB models starting at £190. There are more small

can only be found inside System Builder machines, but they’re worth keeping an eye on. It is

because the OEM model has the same core but smaller core and memory
