Windows 10, version 1607 introduces two editions designed for the unique needs of K-12 institutions: Windows 10 Pro Education and Windows 10 Education. These editions provide education-specific default settings for the evolving landscape in K-12 education IT environments.
Windows 10 Pro Education
Windows 10 Pro Education builds on the commercial version of Windows 10 Pro and provides important management controls needed in schools. Windows 10 Pro Education is effectively a variant of Windows Pro that provides education-specific default settings, including the removal of Cortana*. These default settings disable tips, tricks and suggestions & Microsoft Store suggestions. Windows 10 Pro Education is available on new devices pre-installed with Windows 10, version 1607 that are purchased with discounted K-12 academic licenses through OEM partners (these discounted licenses are sometimes referred to as National Academic or Shape the Future).
Existing devices running Windows 10 Pro, currently activated with the original OEM digital product key and purchased with discounted K-12 academic licenses through OEM partners (these discounted licenses are sometimes referred to as National Academic or Shape the Future), will upgrade automatically to Windows 10 Pro Education as part of the Windows 10, version 1607 installation.
Customers with Academic Volume Licensing agreements with rights for Windows can get Windows 10 Pro Education through the Volume Licensing Service Center, available at a later date.
Customers that deploy Windows 10 Pro are able to configure the product to have similar feature settings to Windows 10 Pro Education using policies.

Windows 10 Education

Windows 10 Education is effectively a variant of Windows 10 Enterprise that provides education-specific default settings, including the removal of Cortana*. These default settings disable tips, tricks and suggestions & Microsoft Store suggestions. In other words, you can opt not to provide a key if you don’t have one.
It’s easy, too.
All you have to do is click “I don’t have a product key” or “Skip,” depending on which version you’re currently using, when it asks for one.
Then, you’re free to move forward.
Of course, nothing is free.
So, if you take this route, you won’t have access to all the benefits of Windows 10.
For example, you won’t be able to personalize any features including your desktop or screensaver.
And, your screen will have a Microsoft watermark visible during all of your computer activity, which may be annoying to some.
Plus, you’ll have to put up with constant warnings from the company, urging you to activate your software.
But, as long as you’re able to deal with those things, you’re free to use the software for as long as you’d like.
If Microsoft changes this policy, you’ll have to fork over some cash if you still want to keep using it.
The nice thing about this is that you can use the software while you scrape together enough money for an upgrade.
Download a Free Windows 10 Trial
You can get a free, 90-day trial of Windows 10 Enterprise.
Although this version is intended for large corporations to implement throughout their company, you can download Windows to use for three months.
Here’s how:
- Start by clicking this link to head over the official Windows Enterprise site portal.
- Click the button that says “Get the Free Trial”
- The interface will take you to a screen that asks you to “select an evaluation file type”.
Here, you’ll have the option to choose between the Enterprise version or the LTSC version. It doesn’t matter which one you choose (unless you’re testing this out for an enterprise company. Essentially, the LTSC version is for companies that can’t have automatic updates because they’ll mess with their software (i.e., hospitals, airports, etc.). The Windows 10 Enterprise version will regularly update to provide new features, which you won’t have to worry about if you’re only using it for 90 days.
- Select the version you’d like and click “Continue”.
- Before you can download the trial, you’ll have to enter some basic information like your name, your company name, email address, and a phone number. Enter your information and click “Continue.”

Then, you have the next 90 days to enjoy the software for free.
Easy, huh?
The one downside, however, is that you can be sure a Microsoft representative will reach out to you regularly to see if you want to subscribe to their software. Don’t forget — they have your email and phone number now.
Of course, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to convert into a customer after the trial is over because this version is intended to be used by large teams, so it’s on the more expensive side.
But, if nothing else, it should get you through the next few months until you figure something else out.
Use Your Student ID to Get a Discount
Microsoft has always been pretty good at taking care of students. They’re constantly offering promos and discounts that can help students save money on laptops and other technology.
At the moment, they give out free copies of W10 Education to students who are currently enrolled at participating colleges and universities.
So, if you’re a college student looking to get Windows 10 for free, it should be pretty easy to do so.
Here’s how to get it:
- Head over to Microsoft’s OnTheHub website by clicking this link.
- Scroll down until you see the purple and white section that reads “Upgrade to Windows 10 Education Now.”
- Enter your the country and state that your school is in.
- Then, enter the name of your institution in the “School” box.
- If your school is a participating institution, it will appear in the drop-down box. Unfortunately, if it doesn’t appear, you’re ineligible to receive the Microsoft student discount.
- In some cases, you may find that only specific departments within a college or university are eligible. The medical department at UCLA may participate in the student discount program, for example, while their history department may not.
- If you’re eligible for the student discount through your school and department, then you can move forward.
Microsoft will ask you for some basic information including your name, school email address, and student ID number before you’re able to download the upgrade.
Check Google for Discounts
From time to time, you’ll find that software retailers offer discounts on Windows 10. But, many of these sales only last a day or so.
If you want to get a deal, you’ll have to search around on Google for a store that’s selling it on the cheap.
Occasionally, you’ll find retailers selling it for as low as $50.
Now, if you choose to buy the software at a discount, make sure that you purchase it from a Genuine Microsoft Dealer.
These dealers should be able to provide you with a Certificate of Authenticity stating your product is Genuine Microsoft Software.
According to the company, there are very few stores online that are authorized to distribute the software legally, so be wary.
Avoid Scams
The company also offers a few tips on how to tell whether a product is authentic or not:
When Buying Physical Software
- Check for an orange or white product key label with a 25-digit code on the outside of the box.
Never purchase a product key separately.
- Look for a holographic security label on all Windows 10 USB drives.
- Make sure that there is a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker on the package. If you hold the label at eye level, an arm’s length away from you, a zig-zag pattern should appear on the sticker.
When Buying a Digital Download
- Never purchase it from a P2P file-sharing service or auction website, as there is no insurance or warranty.
- Don’t buy a product key by itself, as it could be a pre-used code (or even just a made up number).
You Could Always Buy a New Laptop
If you’ve already exhausted your free trial and you have no other options, you could always buy a new PC or refurbished laptop with the software already on it.
If you need a computer for surfing the web and typing up documents, it might not make sense for you to invest in $200 software.
PC laptops are pretty inexpensive these days, and you can usually find one for around the same price as the Windows 10 upgrade.
Currently, Best Buy carries more than 100 computers that come preloaded with the latest Windows software.
And many of them go for less than or are right around $200.
There’s an 11.6” ASUS, for example, that runs between $170 and $200 and has Windows 10 S already on it.
And while this isn’t the fastest or most powerful laptop in the world, it can handle most basic tasks with ease.
If you’re a gamer, you’re going to need something a little bit stronger, so we wouldn’t recommend this for you.
But, if you’re just a run-of-the-mill internet user, this could be your best bet.
Be Careful Out There
Remember, don’t go buying fake product keys just because you want Microsoft 10.
There are a handful of people out there selling phony codes to make a buck, and you could end up wasting your money. For people who use Windows, this is a tricky thing.
If you’re desperate to get the software right now, your best bet is probably to skip the activation process and deal with the watermarks.
Or, you could sign up for that Windows 10 Enterprise trial and screen your calls to avoid those reps (unless you want to subscribe).
Ultimately, the trouble could be worth it. After all, this may be the best version of Windows yet. The best way to ensure a clean installation is by making sure you cross your T’s and dot your I’s.
So, even if there’s an opaque watermark plastered across your screen, you’ll still be able to enjoy the convenience and flexibility of this operating system.
Finding a legitimate Windows 10 free upgrade can be hard to come by, but with some research and creative thinking, the installation process can be done.

Change requirements
Before you change to Windows 10 Pro Education, make sure you meet the following requirements:

Upgrade Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Pro Education
For schools that want to standardize all their Windows 10 Pro devices on Windows 10 Pro Education, the school global administrator can opt in to a free change through the Microsoft Store for Education.

- The tenant’s IT administrator will enable the change for all Azure AD network-joined devices.
- Any device that joins Azure AD will automatically change to Windows 10 Pro Education.

Modifying with Windows Configuration Designer
You can use Windows Configuration Designer to create a provisioning package that you can use to modify the edition of Windows for devices. Install Windows Configuration Designer from the Microsoft Store to create a provisioning package.

In Windows Configuration Designer, select Desktop provisioning to open a simple editor and create a provisioning package for desktop editions of Windows.

On page «Setting up your device» enter your MAK license key in the **** «Enter product key» field to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro Education.

Complete the rest of the provisioning package creation process, and then apply it to the devices you want to change, Windows 10 Pro Education.

Change using the activation page
- On the Windows device you want to change, open application «Parameters «.
- Select Update and security > Activation and then select Change product key .
- In the Enter product key window, enter the MAK key for Windows 10 Pro Education and click the Next button.
Schools can easily upgrade from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Pro Education without using activation keys or rebooting. When one of the users enters their Azure AD credentials associated with a Windows 10 Pro Education license, the operating system changes to Windows 10 Pro Education and everything required. Windows 10 Pro Education features are unlocked. Previously, only schools or organizations that purchased devices through the Shape the Future for School program or signed a Volume Licensing agreement with Microsoft could deploy Windows 10Pro Education to their users. Now that you have Azure AD for your organization, you can take advantage of the power of Windows 10Pro for Education.
When you edit Windows 10 Pro Education, you get the following benefits:
Modify using the Microsoft Store for Education
Once you enable edit for Windows 10 Pro Education, the change will not start until the user signs in to the device. This setting applies to the entire organization or tenant, so you can’t choose which users get the changes. This change will only apply to Windows 10 Pro devices.
Turn on Windows 10 Pro Education to automatically change

Sign in to the Microsoft Store for Education with your work or school account.
The first time you sign in to the Microsoft Store for Education, you are prompted to accept the Microsoft Store for Education terms of use.

Select Manage from the top menu and select the Benefits tile.

On the Benefits tile, find the link Change Windows 10 Pro Education and click it.

On the Change All Devices to Windows 10 Pro Education Free page, check the box next to I understand that enabling this setting will change all domain-joined devices running Windows 10 Pro to in my organization .

Click the Edit button on your device to get the Windows 10 Pro Education free page in the Microsoft Store.
You will see a confirmation window confirming that all devices in the organization have been successfully changed to Windows 10 Pro Education, and each Windows 10 Pro Azure AD joined device will automatically change the next time the user in the organization signs in to the device.

Enabling automatic change also activates an email notifying all global administrators in the organization of the change. How does this process work for users? How will they change their devices?
Existing Azure AD domain-joined devices will be changed to Windows 10 Pro Education at the next user sign-in. That’s all! No other action is required.
For new non-Azure AD connected devices
Now that you’ve enabled the option to automatically change Windows 10 Pro Education, users are ready to change their devices running Windows 10 Pro version 1607 or higher, version 1703 to Windows 10 Pro for Education. educational institutions release.

During the initial device setup, on page Select a setup method , select Organization setup , and then click Next .

On page Sign in with your Microsoft account , enter your username and password to use with Office 365 or other Microsoft services, and then click Next .

Complete the remaining steps to set up your Windows device. Once the process is complete, the device will be Azure AD joined to your school’s subscription.
Join a device to Azure AD when the device already has Windows 10 Pro version 1703 installed and configured
If your Windows device is running Windows 10 version 1703, follow these steps:

Select Settings > Accounts > Work or school access .

Under Work or school account access , click Connect .

In the Work or School Account Setup window, click Join this device to Azure Active Directory at the bottom of the window.

In the Sign In window , enter your Azure AD credentials (username and password) and sign in. The device is joined to school Azure AD.

To verify that the device was successfully joined to Azure AD, go back to section Settings > Accounts > Work or school account access . You should see a connection under Work or school account access indicating that the device is connected to Azure AD.

Step 2: Sign in with an Azure AD account
After joining a device to an Azure AD subscription, users will sign in with their Azure AD account. However, the user-associated Windows 10Pro Education license activates Windows 10Pro Education edition features on the device.
Step 3: Verify Windows 10Pro Education Activation
You can check if you have a Windows 10 Enterprise E3 subscription by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation as shown in Figure 9.

If you have any problems with your Windows 10 Pro Education license or license activation in Panel Activation will display the appropriate error message or status. This information will help you diagnose problems encountered during the licensing and activation process.
Troubleshooting upgrade process
In some cases, users may experience issues with Windows 10 Pro Education changes. The following are the most common issues that users may encounter.
- The existing operating system (Windows 10 Pro version 1607 or higher or version 1703) is not activated.
- Change Windows 10 Pro Education has expired or has been removed.
The following pictures will help you diagnose these common problems:

Verify device eligibility
Devices must be running Windows 10 Pro version 1607 or later or joined to a domain with Azure AD Connect. The offer also applies to customers who are federated with Azure Active Directory. You can use the following procedures to verify that specific devices meet these requirements.
To determine if a device is joined to Azure Active Directory, follow these steps:

Open a command prompt and enter the following command:
dsregcmd /status

Review the output under Device State. If status AzureAdJoined is YES, the device is joined to Azure Active Directory.
Determine the version of Windows 10

In the command prompt window, enter:
winver
A pop-up window will appear with the Windows 10 version number and OS build details.
Note
If the device is running a previous version of Windows 10 Pro (for example, version 1511), it will not be changed to Windows 10 Pro Education when the user signs in, even if the user is assigned a license.
Rollback to Windows 10Pro with Windows 10Pro Education
If your organization has made changes to Windows 10 Pro Windows 10 Pro Education and you decide to roll back to Windows 10 Pro or revert the change, perform the following task:
- Sign in to the Microsoft Store for Education page and disable automatic change.
- Click the link to disable automatic modification of the notification email sent to all global administrators.
After the Windows 10 Pro Education automatic change is disabled, the change takes effect immediately. Devices that have been changed to Windows 10 Pro only after license renewal (every 30 days) and at the next user sign-in. Therefore, users whose device has been changed may not immediately roll back Windows 10 Pro Education to Windows 10 Pro within 30 days. However, users who are not signed in during the time the change was enabled and then disabled will never see the Windows 10 Pro device change.
Note
Devices that have been changed from Windows 10 Pro Education mode cannot be rolled back to Windows 10 Pro Education S.
Sign in to the Microsoft Store for Education with your school or work account, or follow the link in your email notification to turn off automatic change.
Select Manage > Benefits , find section Windows 10 Pro Education and follow the link.
On the Return to Windows 10 Pro page, click Return to Windows 10 Pro .

Click button Close on page Success .
All global administrators receive confirmation email that their organization has been rolled back to Windows 10 Pro. If you or another global admin later decides to re-enable automatic changes, you can do so by selecting change Windows 10 Pro Education for free under Manage Benefits > in the Microsoft Store for Education.****
Preparing to deploy Windows 10 Pro Education licenses
If you have on-premises Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domains, users will use their domain credentials to log on to the AD DS domain. Before you can deploy Windows 10 Pro Education to users’ devices, you need to synchronize identities in your on-premises AD DS domain with Azure AD.
Need to synchronize these identities so that users have a single identity that they can use to access on-premises applications and cloud services that use Azure AD (for example, Windows 10 Pro Education). This means that users will use their existing credentials to sign in to Azure AD and access the cloud services that you provide and manage for them.
(Azure AD Connect) is responsible for identity synchronization between your on-premises AD DS domain and Azure AD. Azure AD Connect is a service that can be installed locally or on a virtual machine in Azure.

Microsoft does not sell Windows to large organizations for the same price as individuals. Instead, it uses ‘ Volume Licensing ‘ which includes mass distribution of Enterprise Edition license keys at a fixed price, which is often significantly lower than the price of a regular license. You can purchase copies as part of a wholesale deal for organizations up to 5 PCs, but you must contact the Microsoft Volume Licensing Center to complete the deal. Microsoft’s low minimum business size means most small businesses qualify. Microsoft also offers offers to governments, charities and non-profit organizations. 6. Download the trial version of Windows 10 Enterprise.
Microsoft is offering free copies of Windows Enterprise to companies looking to migrate to Windows or upgrade older hardware. Everything you need to get a free trial license for Windows 10 Enterprise and a Microsoft account.

If you are buying from an individual and want to stay legal, carefully evaluate your purchase. The private and embedded version is best for you as it ensures that the key is not actually used. The manufacturer’s keycards are also legal, but there is no way to verify that the key has not actually been used. Buy it only from a store or from someone you trust.

As a last resort: do not activate Windows 10.
If all else fails, try this: download Windows 10 from Microsoft, install it on the desired computer, and do not activate.

Is it legal to use non-named Windows serial numbers?
There is nothing wrong with using a generic product key to install Windows on your computer. However, this setup comes with some significant limitations.
In particular, the shared key does not grant usage rights. The keys are intended to help you install Windows. Within 30-90 days (depending on the type of key), the generic key will expire and you will need to add the full retail key.
In theory, Microsoft will never let you activate Windows with a generic key. If you try to activate Windows using a generic key, you will see the following message on the screen:

How to change Windows 10 serial number
If you used a shared product key to install Windows, you can easily replace it with a full retail version and thus get a legal copy of Windows without having to uninstall and reinstall the operating system.
Before you follow these steps, you must first purchase a retail version of a Windows product key. You can buy them directly from the Microsoft online store. Some third party vendors may also have legal keys, but we cannot guarantee that they will work.
When you’re ready, open the « Settings » app and select « Update & Security » > « Activation » > « Upgrade Your Version of Windows » > « Change Product Key «.
A new window will appear on the screen and you will be prompted to enter the retail key you just purchased.
If your key is legal, the activation process will begin. The process can take from a few seconds to several hours, depending on how busy the Microsoft servers are.

Otherwise, no significant problems with the operation and warranty support of KOMPAS-3D Home and applications in the Windows 7 operating system are expected, they will be available for installation in the previous mode.
Attention! It is strongly recommended to update the outdated version of the Microsoft Windows operating system to version 10 and install updates of ASCON software products in a timely manner. This will allow you to use the software with maximum efficiency.
Adobe products have the status of an unspoken standard among photo artists, publishers, and video content producers. Whether you’re in a studio, publishing house, magazine or newspaper office, you’ll most likely find Photoshop, Illustrator, Muse, Audition, Premiere, After Effects, or the whole line in the Creative Cloud package.
But, unfortunately, business standards are too slow to penetrate the academic environment. Therefore, students often have questions. For example, what to do if for a report, abstract, article in a scientific journal or term paper, you need to quickly draw up a diagram, draw an illustration or process a picture, and the university has not bothered to purchase a professional graphic editor? The situation becomes more complicated if the work needs to be done on a university computer that does not run the latest version of Windows, has a small amount of RAM and a leisurely hard drive. Such hardware is unlikely to cope with an online graphic editor, and the rules for using computers in universities will not allow installing «broken» (pirated) versions of paid programs. We do not recommend using the last solution, namely pirated software.
It remains to look for suitable alternatives, of which there are not so few created by 2019. But one thing is the statements of software manufacturers, and quite another is practice. Therefore, we tested the programs in the field on a test computer with the following specifications:
- Processor: Intel Core i3 2120 (two cores at 3.0Ghz each)
- Memory: 4 Gb DDR3
- Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000
- OS: Windows 7 (no service updates)
This office hardware and software configuration is very outdated, however, such computers can often be found in university classrooms and libraries.
1. GIMP
GIMP is the best-known free alternative to Photoshop today, i.e. the most powerful multi-purpose free image editor on the software market. The basic functionality of classic Photoshop is fully implemented here:
- photo editing,
- creating collages, posters, drawings from scratch,
- preparing book layouts and website design prototypes.
The editor supports all common graphics formats. The program supports plug-ins, is Russified and is available on all popular operating systems for PC: MacOS, Linux, Windows. The developers have made sure that you can comfortably work with GIMP on leisurely computers with Windows XP and MacOS 10.6.

2. PAINT.NET
The creators of Paint.NET sought to develop an alternative to the standard Windows graphics editor. After the initial goal was achieved, the editor continued its development and in the latest versions was able to compete with more serious software such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Here are some of the «chips» of Paint.NET:
- work with layers as in commercial counterparts,
- complete history of edits with the ability to return to any stage of working with graphics,
- free plug-ins (extensions) for most common tasks,
- basic effects of classic Photoshop.
For all its merits, Paint.NET also has obvious drawbacks. The program requires the .NET Framework 4.8 package and the latest Windows updates. On a test computer without the latest Windows 7 service packs, the application failed to run.

3. Pinta
Pinta is a tiny (distribution of the latest version of the program for Windows takes only 2.5 megabytes on your hard disk.) raster graphics editor. The program was conceived as a simpler and faster version of Paint.NET not only for Windows, but also for various platforms: versions of the editor for Ubuntu, MacOS, FreeBSD are available on the download page.
The developers tried to make the editor simple and understandable, so they did not overload the interface and brought it closer to the standard Paint from the delivery of the Windows operating system. Icons and panels of Pinta are made in the same well-known style to users.
The editor is completely Russified, processes all popular graphic formats, remembers the stages of working on an image, supports working with layers, has more than 35 built-in effects, which are quite enough for simple editing and processing of images, creating simple collages.
Pinta editor installation failed on test computer with outdated Windows 7. As with Paint.NET, this program requires a global system update (Service Pack 1).

4. Pixia
The program was positioned as a tool for graphic designers, anime and manga authors. Later, the project gained wide popularity and, accordingly, attracted a mass audience.
The main conceptual feature of this software is good support for Wacom graphics tablets, popular among artists and illustrators. By combining hotkeys and a tablet, you can really quickly polish photos, draw and decorate a simple drawing, and, if necessary, a diagram. Pixia is compatible with Photoshop’s proprietary format (.psd), so it can be used for website prototyping, book and brochure design. However, the Japanese program is still far from the top of the Illustrator package.
The shortcomings of Pixia are mainly due to the origin of the program. The official site from which you can download this image editor for free is in Japanese. There are also problems with localization, only the English and Japanese versions of the program are available for download.
Installing the latest version of Pixia on the test hardware failed. An anglicized Pixia installer in pure Japanese offered to install the latest service pack for Windows 7.

5. FireAlpaca
The creators of FireAlpaca claim that they created their product so that users can work with graphics in a convenient interface for free. The arrangement of brushes and menu items is really similar to Photoshop CS6 edition. The program loads quickly enough, just as quickly opens graphic files with many layers. The functional part is also in order — there is a processing history, and standard brushes, effects, localization is also provided «out of the box» — no additional cracks are required.
There are also disadvantages, where without them. The developers declare altruism, behind which, upon closer examination, there is a desire to earn extra money. From time to time, FireAlpaca users will be bothered by a pop-up banner ad.
Testing on an outdated computer did not reveal any obvious problems. The editor worked both on outdated Windows 7 and on a computer with an updated version of the OS.

6. LazPaint
LazPaint is a simplified version of the Paint. NET graphics editor. The program allows you to work with graphics on the weakest machines. The creators did not lie — volumetric bitmaps really load a few milliseconds faster than in GIMP and Paint.NET. Another important plus is the support of the Russian language.
As expected, LazPaint also includes features inherent in Photoshop, but with some limitations:
- working with layers, the illustrator runs the risk of mixing imported objects;
- Support for .psd files is not complete, only import from Photoshop files;
- Working with textures, in our opinion, is organized too complicated, without experience in Photoshop and reading the instructions it will not be easy to figure it out.
The program did an excellent job with testing on the old hardware. Windows 7 without a service pack did not cause any complaints from the program.

Some interface elements are similar to Photoshop, others resemble mobile graphic editors, such as Camly. The developers have not forgotten about newbies and have offered novice designers a simplified mode with preset filters, like in Instagram. It is worth recognizing that many tasks, for example, giving the image the effect of yellowed paper or eliminating the red-eye effect in pictures, are also solved in this mode.
More advanced users who are already familiar with professional graphic editors will see a more rigorous Photoshop-like interface. However, it cannot be said that Photo Pos Pro completely copies the Adobe product.
Basic image editing tools are preinstalled in the program, which are sufficient for graphics processing. You will have to pay for expanding the functionality, but in-app purchases do not upset and do not injure the psyche of the designer with every minute reminders.
Photo Pos Pro 3 editor has not been field tested. After installation, it turned out that the program does not support the built-in graphics accelerator on the demo computer.

8. DigiKam
DigiKam is an image manager for photographers and designers. The program will help organize pictures from cameras and gadgets, and, if necessary, upload your graphics archive to the cloud storage. The Digikam package includes a pre-installed graphic editor, and, perhaps, it is more suitable for novice users than other programs from the review.
The Digikam editor supports many graphic formats and can freely convert bitmap graphics. Basic editing is implemented in the familiar text menu. Thanks to high-quality Russification, even an unprepared user will be able to adjust the brightness, contrast, white balance. Preset filters will help you style your photos antique or make them look like photos from Instagram.
The disadvantage of the program is the size of the distribution kit and the need to install additional server components (SQLite). The Digikam installer is quite complicated, and we do not recommend experimenting with the program settings during the installation process, leave the settings recommended by the installer, then you can change them.
Installation on the test computer was successful. The program coped with opening files with a large number of layers and quickly saved the edited file.

9. PhotoScape
Another graphics manager for Windows with a preinstalled editor. PhotoScape cannot be called a full-fledged replacement for Photoshop, but rather a product for beginner photographers and designers. The functionality of the program, to put it mildly, is not surprising. However, PhotoScape does a good job of basic editing.
The program started up without any problems on the test PC, coped with opening and saving large graphic files.

10. PhotoDemon
The PhotoDemon editor differs from other participants in the simplicity of the user’s design. A text menu is located at the top of the main program window, toolbars are located on the side edges on the right and left. The Demon icons are large and will not raise questions from a beginner: an eraser, a pencil, text, geometric shapes — everything is familiar from the Paint editor. However, despite its apparent simplicity, this editor works with multilayer projects and processes large files quickly.
PhotoDemon does not require installation on a computer: the program can be run from a flash drive or portable hard drive.
Support for older operating systems is declared on the developers’ website. The editor worked without problems on the test computer.
