Phats:

The nice thing about identifying motherboard types on a Phat Xbox 360 is that we can 100% do it externally, without the need to open up the case at all. In order to determine the motherboard type of any phat console, there are just two items to check:

  • Does the console have an HDMI port?
  • What is the power usage of the console? (Determined by examining the power socket on the back of the console)

  • It’s trivial to inspect the back of the Phat Xbox 360 to see if it has an HDMI port or not. Here is an image of a Xbox 360 Phat that does have an HDMI port and it’s labeled:

Now that you know if your console has HDMI, we can look at the power socket on the console and compare to this image:

So, essentially what you want to see is the precense of a HDMI port, plus either of the two power sockets to the right side of the image above which would mean that you have a Falcon or Jasper console, which are essentially the only Phats worth modding.

Once you’ve confirmed you’ve got a Falcon or Jasper console you can visit our RGH Falcon or Jasper Guide for detailed instructions on how to mod your console.

    Slim S:

The nice thing about the Slim series is that there are only 2 possible motherboards within them:

  • Trinity (Most consoles with a MFR date of 07-2011 and BEFORE)
  • Corona (Most consoles with a MFR date of 8-2011 and AFTER)

  • Both Trinity and Corona motherboard consoles are all 100% RGH’able. You do need to determine your specific motherboard type so that you can get the correct supplies. The dates mentioned above are about 90% accurate as far as determining your motherboard version but I have seen some consoles that were Trinities with a much later MFR date, and I’ve seen a few Coronas in consoles with earlier MFR dates.

To be 100% certain you’ll need to open up the console and inspect the motherboard.

The quickest check to tell a Trinity from a Corona is to examine the J2C1 and J2C3 headers (JTAG header).

In a Trinity motherboard the headers are vertical and paralell to each other like this:

If you have a Trinity console, there is no need to check anything further. All Trinities, even the ones that have the 4gb add-on, have a 16mb nand and are modded in the same way. One trinity is the same as any other. You can now go follow the guide for Trinity consoles.

In a Corona motherboard one header is vertical and the other is rotated 90 degress to be horizontal like this:

If you have a Corona console, you’ll still need to determine if you have a 4gb Nand or a 16mb Nand. This is easily determined by simply powering up the console, visiting the storage menu, and looking for a ~4gb onboard storage unit. If an onboard storage appears then you have a 4gb Corona and should use our 4gb Corona Guide and if you don’t show an onboard storage then you have a 16mb Corona nand and should use our 16mb Corona Guide.

If for some reason you’re unsure about checking the storage menu on the console, or want to be really-extra-double-sure that you have either a 4gb or a 16mb Corona you can visually identify them by inspecting the nand chip on the console:

    Slim E:

The Slim E series console has two motherboard possibilities, and it is important to determine which one is in the console you want to modify:

  • Corona (just like in the Slim S series all are mod-able)
  • Winchester (as of 2018 no current method exists to mod this console) 🙁

  • As with the Slim S series console the MFR date can be a good indicator, but it is not 100% reliable. As a rule of thumb:

  • Consoles with a MFR date of 06-2014 and BEFORE are likely to be Corona
  • Consoles with a MFR date of 07-2014 and AFTER are likely to be the non-modable Winchester motherboard.

  • The only way to know for absolutely 100% certain is to open up the console and remove the heatsink and take a look at the XCGPU. In the Corona consoles they stil have an IHS (integrated heat sink) an on the Winchester motherboards they do not.

Here is an example Corona XCGPU:

Here is an example of a Winchester XCGPU:

The bad news here is if you have a Winchester, you’re just out of luck. As of today in 2018 there is still no method to do any hardware modificaitons to the Winchester console.

There is no difference in the modding process for a Corona that was in an E series slim vs one that was in an S series slim.

If for some reason you’re unsure about checking the storage menu on the console, or want to be really-extra-double-sure that you have either a 4gb or a 16mb Corona you can visually identify them by inspecting the nand chip on the console:

How to: Spot a Xbox 360 «Jasper» unit | Josh Lam

Welcome Xbox360forum Members! This is a Xbox Arcade, while the Jasper Xbox Pro is now shipping. Please subscribe to this blog if you found this interesting.

Okay, for the noobs: a Falcon unit has a 65nm CPU, 90nm GPU while a “Jasper” unit, the new one, still has a 65nm CPu but a nice, shiny 65nm GPU!

So, how do I buy the newer one then?

OK here’s the star of the show — the new GPU. The main body is the same size as the past GPU’s, which I did not expect, but there are a lot less components on the surface and the main heat die is considerably smaller and not centered on the package, either.

    Old 90nm GPU for reference.

The CPU hasn’t changed much from the Falcon.

I’ll do some heat tests with this unit once I inevitably slap it into an Xbox 360 laptop. Now let’s move onto how you can spot one of these new units in the store!

The Xbox 360 box has a hole at the top of it where the bar code of the console is visible. Clerks usually scan this when you buy one. What you need to do it look at the lower left corner of this box. If you peer closely you can make out at least half of the voltage/amperage rating of the unit. The # of amps used by the 12 volt rail is the key to determining which console it is. The photos below show this in detail.

14.2 amps equals a Falcon unit (65nm CPU, 90nm GPU). Please keep in mind there’s nothing wrong with having one of these, I play mine a lot and it’s fine. You might not be able to see the whole voltage listing just through the peep-hole, but you should at least be able to see if a 14.2A or 12.1A is just to the left of the “5V”.

12.1 amps equals a Jasper unit (65nm CPU, 65nm GPU). This voltage rating is also listed above the power input, but of course you can’t see that when it’s in the box.

There has been a lot of discussion about lot #’s, power supply ratings, and things of that nature being used to find Jaspers. I have found those to be unreliable. For instance, this Jasper was lot #0842X. However at Circuit City today I saw a 0843X Arcade unit, but it was 14.2 amps.

Also this particular Jasper came with a 175W power supply (like the Falcons used). They are probably trying to use up all the older PSU’s and thus it was packed with the unit. Keep in mind that even if this Xbox only needs 150W it’s not a issue to power it with a 175W supply, just like people who put 700W PSU’s in their PC’s for no apparent reason.

Above we see the power port of the Jasper 360. Note how it has a slit in the middle of the top plastic bar. The plugs on the PSU’s are designed in a way to be forwards not backwards compatible. That is, an original 203W PSU will fit in any Xbox 360, but because of these ‘keying”, a new 150W PSU will only fit in an Jasper. Likewise a Falcon PSU will fit in a Jasper but not vice-versa.

So yes, check the amperage rating of the unit at the back — it’s the most sure-fire way to find a Jasper from what I have seen.

Unlike previous revisions, Jasper is not so easy to distinguish from others. Yes, and Microsoft has not officially commented on the appearance of a new revision of its console, except for confirming that Jasper has internal memory.

Hardware analytics resource AnandTech decided to correct this situation and compiled a rough list of distinguishing features by which you can recognize Jasper in stores.

According to AnandTech, buyers of the Arcade package have the best chance of finding Jasper. The publication recalls that so far Jaspers have been found only in Pro and Arcade trim levels and their presence in Elite has not been reported. However, this can be explained by the fact that the number of purchased Elite is several times less than Arcade.

The first thing AnandTech says is the sticker on the console box. It has data like lot number , team etc. Lot Number (i.e. year and week of issue) of Jasper boxes are 0842X and newer. Accordingly, 08 is the year 2008, and 42 is the 42nd week.

Further on the box sticker you can find two broad lines of the barcode. Between them you can see a nine-digit code. According to AnandTech, if it is equal to XGX-00019 , then with a high degree of probability it can be argued that Jasper is inside the box.

Under the barcodes there is another inscription — in the case of the Arcade kit, this can be Xbox 360 Arcade System Value Bundle 2008 E — «Jasper inside with a high probability» AnandTech says so.

To be completely sure, as in the case of the Falcon, you will have to open the box and get the console. On its back panel (with many holes) you need to inspect the sticker. Only this time we’re not looking at the release date, but at the far left inscription. Above the familiar phrase «Made in China» there is an inscription of interest to us about the voltage of the prefix. Since the power consumption of the Xbox 360 decreases with each new revision, this inscription also changes. So 12V — 12.1A; 5V-1A is a 100% guarantee that the Jasper revision console according to AnandTech.

For comparison, that of other revisions is: 12V — 16.5A; 5V-1A for Zephyr and 12V — 14.2A; 5V-1A for Falcon.

If you can easily get the Xbox 360 out of the box in the store, then it should not be a problem to examine its power connector. With Jasper and he has undergone a change. As you know, the first revision of the Xbox 360 ran on a 203W power supply. Zephyr did not reduce its power consumption and also ran from 203W. Falcon, in turn, works with 175W, as well as 203W. Brand new Jasper uses only 9 power supply0199 150W , however, it can also work with blocks from previous revisions. Thus, AnandTech concludes that they are backwards compatible. However, it is important to pay attention — because of this, many Jaspers are now equipped with 175W power supplies, which have accumulated in abundance in MS warehouses. Therefore, a 175W unit is not a guarantee that the console is on the Falcon revision — it could be Jasper. You can tell them apart by the slightly modified power cord connector on the back of the Xbox 360.

So if you want to start scouring stores for Jasper right now, look for sign 12V-12.1A on Xbox 360 back sticker and new power connector.

The full version of this interesting material can be found on the AnandTech website

We are waiting for deliveries of a new revision to Russia, or maybe one of you has already become the owner of Jasper?

Xbox 360 Jasper coming out in August?

Microsoft has notified IBM and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing that the new Xbox 360 Jasper should hit the market in August.

Microsoft has notified IBM and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing that the new Xbox 360 Jasper should hit the market in August.

Recall that Jasper is the code name for the new motherboard for the Xbox 360. Jasper, according to the most widespread information, will have a 65-nm graphics chip from ATI Technologies, as well as smaller memory chips. As for the processor, the transition to 65-nm technology took place already in the modification of the Falcon motherboard — such consoles can be found on free sale for a long time.

It is expected that with the advent of Jasper, the Xbox 360 console will get rid of the main ailment in the face of RRoD, will consume less electricity, will use a simpler and more reliable cooling system, and, importantly, will no longer sound like a jet plane coming in to land. However, in the Falcon models, the console noise has already been significantly reduced.

The Last of Us from the indie world. Why you should read LISA

The LISA game series greets the player with strange music and visual style. But the filling is as close to reality as possible. The games show the apocalypse without embellishment, funny humor, family tragedy, depression, drug addiction and cruelty. It has a well-written plot and characters, whose fate makes the player’s heart bleed. The player will again have the opportunity to experience all this, thanks to the release of an updated version. On July 18, LISA: Definitive Edition will be released — we decided to remind you what the original games in the series were about.

May indie games. Voidtrain, Planet of Lana, Outlast: Trials, Tin Hearts

Judging by the popularity of survival simulators, indie developers are actively preparing players to conquer new universes. Not less! In May, games were released where you have to fight for life on an interdimensional train in Voidtrain and on Mars in Occupy Mars. Not everyone will be able to survive in the laboratory of a mad scientist in The Outlast Trials, but they will be able to be properly scared. But some are much more intimidated by the height in Only Up, although it is a beautiful journey beyond the clouds. Well, if you don’t like to be afraid and survive, then you can relax in battles with friends in Friends vs Friends, or plunge into the atmospheric puzzle adventures of Tin Hearts and Planet of Lana.

The last Xbox Games Showcase 2023 clearly demonstrated that no big words are used, but players need games, not cinematic clips of the same products year after year! Something is going on inside the walls of Microsoft and someone is deliberately sabotaging the legacy of the Xbox brand.
