The launch of the Xbox 360 was a tumultuous time for Microsoft with their new systems being returned left and right due to a hardware issue widely referred to as the “red ring of death” – a name referencing the normally green circle on the face of the console that would turn red during a critical error. In response to this rampant problem, Microsoft later released the Jasper-based Xbox 360 console.

But, what is a Jasper Xbox 360? Jasper (or Jasper-based) Xbox 360 consoles refer to the redesigned Jasper motherboards. These redesigned motherboards house a newer graphics chip that is less susceptible to overheating than launch models and fits more securely, making the Jasper consoles more reliable than the original units and far less likely to experience the notorious system error commonly referred to as the red ring of death.

To the average consumer, a Jasper Xbox 360 and a launch unit would look virtually identical. Again, the main difference isn’t an aesthetic one, but rather, it is an upgrade to the reliability of the console itself. The red ring of death issue for early Xbox 360 consoles wasn’t an uncommon one, so this motherboard redesign was much needed.

Additionally, the Jasper Xbox 360 consoles also feature an additional 256 MB of internal flash memory on top of the added stability. The Jasper-based models also switched from a 175W power supply to a 150W power supply. (However, it should be noted that some earlier Jasper units still shipped with the 175W supply.)

How To Tell If Xbox 360 Console Has The Jasper Motherboard

Because the differences aren’t overly aesthetic in nature, the Jasper Xbox 360 and the earlier models are somewhat difficult to tell apart for those who don’t know what they’re looking for. That being said, there are several different ways to discern between these two different units.

Perhaps the easiest way to identify a Jasper model is by locating the voltage/amperage rating on the unit. This rating can be found just below and to the left of the barcode on the back of the Xbox 360 console itself. This is even viewable in the original packaging due to a small window that allows retailers to scan the barcode upon checkout, but it’s obviously even easier to spot on used consoles that are outside of their original box.

The number of amps used by the 12-volt rail is 12.1 for the Jasper unit and 14.2 or 16.5 for the older units. In layman’s terms, Jasper consoles will read as “12.1A” in the middle of the voltage/amperage rating while older consoles will read as “14.2A” or “16.5A.” (The photo above perhaps more clearly illustrates the subtle but distinct differences between the two.)

Again, the power supply can also be an identifier, but this is a little trickier as some earlier Jasper-based consoles shipped with the older 175W power supply. This is all despite the fact that the Jasper Xbox 360 consoles only require a 150W supply.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with using the 175W supply with the Jasper. (Microsoft likely included these power supply units to try and get rid of the remaining 175W units, but again, this won’t cause an issue with the console.) However, it should be noted that older consoles will not work with the newer 150W supply.

It should also be noted that all of these points only apply to the original Xbox 360 designs. Besides, the redesigned Xbox 360 Slim and Xbox 360 E models aren’t nearly as unreliable as the notorious earlier units anyway. And that segues nicely to our last related topic…

Which Xbox 360 Model Should You Get Today?

While there is certainly a preferred model between the earlier Xbox 360 models and the Jasper version – it’s the Jasper version if you haven’t been paying attention so far – things are more up to personal preference when it comes to the other various models. The first redesign in the Xbox 360 family is the Slim, which is also commonly referred to as the ‘S. ’ The third and final redesign is the Xbox 360 E, which is not to be confused with the ‘Elite’ or ‘Super Elite’ – the latter two consoles are actually (and confusingly) just different versions of the original hardware with more hard drive space and various limited edition models.

At the end of the day, the redesigned Xbox 360 Slim and Xbox 360 E models are both more compact than the original unit and add built-in support with the Kinect accessory. The Slim runs more quietly than the original model and the E is even more discreet than that. That being said, console volume may vary in the used market depending on how well the consoles were cared for.

There is still some debate to suggest that the Jasper-based Xbox 360 is still a bit more reliable than the Slim redesign, but since Xbox hasn’t released any numbers for returned units, it’s honestly hard to say if there is any truth to this. That being said, none of the Xbox 360 consoles from the Jasper-based model moving forward have anywhere close to the same amount of reported issues as the notorious launch version.

At the end of the day, retro enthusiasts should be discerning when it comes to picking up an original Xbox 360 (only in regards to whether or not the unit is a Jasper-based console), but again, the redesigned units more or less come down to preference. A good price on one model or the other could be the swaying argument; availability at your local used game store is certainly another consideration. Either way, it is hard to go wrong with either the Slim or the E model.

Finally, prospective buyers should be aware that some early Xbox 360 consoles with the original design did not ship with an HDMI port. This was introduced later in the life of the original Xbox 360 console. So, if you’re looking for a console to play on a newer television, the original HDMI-less model might be one to avoid. Either way, make sure to do your research before purchasing. The Xbox 360 is an excellent console with a deep library of quintessential titles. Luckily, many of these games are relatively inexpensive today, so it’s a great time to jump back in on this retro gaming console.
