Test of dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4800+ / Processors and memory

Not so long ago, our test lab received a flagship chip of the Athlon 64 X2 processor series, marked as 4800+, thanks to AMD representative office in Ukraine. This is indeed one of the most powerful processors currently available for sale, but we were put in a quandary. What to test and how to test? On the one hand, everything is clear — this is not the first meeting with dual-core processors in our test lab. But for a grandiose comparative test, we lacked similar chips from a competitor, there was no top-end Intel processor. Our partners promised to help make testing full-fledged, but two weeks have passed, and the necessary processors have not made it to the test lab. Therefore, in order to prevent the already obtained results from becoming outdated and irrelevant, we will focus on the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ processor itself and its architecture, compare it with the single-core solution represented by the Athlon 64 3800+, and give an answer to the question of the correct positioning of the series by the manufacturer. And we will try to make a comparison with a competitor from another camp at the first opportunity.

Back in the spring of this year, AMD introduced its dual-core desktop processors Athlon 64 X2, almost a month later than the server dual-core Opterons. The line initially featured four processors rated 4200+, 4400+, 4600+, and 4800+. But the «biting» price for these chips and the successful pricing policy of Intel forced AMD to introduce a more affordable version a little later — Athlon 64 X2 3800+. Today, there are already rumors in the network about the addition of the lineup from above, the transitional Athlon 64 X2 5000+. Despite this, you can still become a happy owner of one of the five listed processors based, depending on the rating, on Manchester or Toledo cores, differing in cache memory size.

All processors are designed for Socket 939, have 128 KB L1 cache per core, have an integrated HyperTransport bus controller for operating at 1 GHz, can dissipate up to 110 W of energy in the form of heat at rated supply voltage of 1. 35-1.40 V, and are also able to withstand safe heating up to a temperature not exceeding 65 ° C.

It is interesting to recall the positioning of Athlon 64 X2 processors.

According to the manufacturer, the Athlon 64 X2 processors are designed for advanced users and professionals working with multiple resource-intensive applications at the same time, as well as using multi-threaded applications for processing digital content. Of course, processors can easily cope with computer games, but it is not advisable to use them for these purposes, since modern games do not yet know how to use multithreading and, accordingly, multi-core will not give a tangible increase in performance. As you can see, the lineup does not replace the gaming Athlon 64 FX, but continues the Athlon 64, but with a more professional focus and a focus on the future development of multi-threaded computing.

As for the architectural features, which have already been said a lot in other materials, everything is very clearly and technically detailed in the «AMD Functional Data Sheet, 939-Pin Package» document, which can be found on the official website.

In the Athlon 64 X2 processor, each core has its own L2 cache, but the memory and HyperTransport bus interface is shared. How do the kernels do not interfere with each other when working with memory and the system? Apparently something important is hidden under the common name Northbridge in the above diagram.

It’s all about the Crossbar Switch request switch, which is an effective link between the kernel system request interface and the memory bus controllers and HyperTransport. That is, it is he who decides how to most rationally perform request switching in such a way as to reduce the competition of cores for system resources to a minimum. In addition, through the Crossbar Switch, the cores can interact with each other without additional load on other subsystems. According to AMD, this architecture binding component has practically no effect on performance (compared to a full-fledged dual-processor architecture). Practical research confirms this. This approach is positioned as more advanced than the Intel Pentium D architecture, but today we are unable to make a comparison.

Getting to know the processor

As already mentioned, the processor is intended for installation in Socket 939, so there is nothing special in its appearance compared to single-core models.

X2 series can only be identified by marking. In this case, it is very easy, since only dual-core AMD processors have a performance index of 4800. But with the 3800 model it would be a little more difficult, but knowing the markings it is impossible to get confused. The last two letters indicate the core packed under the heat spreader. On our processor CD talks about using the Toledo kernel. The Athlon 64 X2 4400+ processor will have the same ending. The marking of the rest of the processors of the family will end with BV , which will confirm the use of the Manchester core. Since the conversation delved into the marking, we will decipher it completely, since there was one more nuance in it.

So what does ADA4800DAA6CD mean? With ADA everything is clear — this is AMD Desktop Athlon 64. Next comes the processor rating — 4800+ . The letter D after the rating indicates that the processor is installed in Socket 939. The first A indicates a supply voltage of 1.3-1.4 V. But the second A may puzzle, after reading the specification, since it reports a maximum core temperature of 71°C (looks like AMD played it safe). The number 6 indicates that the total amount of cache memory in the second level is 2048 KB, and you are already familiar with CD .

If you look at the processor from below, you can distinguish it from other Athlon 64 939 is impossible.

To satisfy our skepticism, we decided to test the processor for compatibility. At the time of testing, there were two more motherboards with Socket 939 available — these are ASUS A8N-E and ASUS A8N-SLI, but we did not manage to see the operation of the processor in a single-core version. Both boards had a fairly recent BIOS and accepted the processor «as native». Immediately after the start of the operating system, the «Device Manager» informed us that the system had become a two-processor one.

We obtain information about the processor itself and its capabilities using the CPU-Z utility, which has already become a standard.

As you can see, nothing unpredictable, CPU-Z version 1.30 determined all the parameters correctly.

Performance processor — corresponding memory. These are the settings that the Corsair CMX512-3200XLPRO modules worked with.

Immediately after a simple assembly of the system, we decided to check how hot the new processor is. First we used the Prime 9 program5, but she was able to warm up the processor only to 49°C, which seemed to us not enough. The next step was S&M 1.7.3.

This program works great with multi-core processors, and in conjunction with SpeedFan it also keeps a visual log of work. She was able to fire up the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ up to 52°C (red graph). The Thermaltake CL-P0200 cooling system is more than enough for such a cool processor. Maybe try to overclock it?

But with overclocking, we did not work out. The result is quite modest, only 2580 MHz, i.e. 180 MHz gain. This is the ceiling of stable operation, and the processor itself was able to start at a frequency of 2700 MHz, but Windows XP could not fully boot.

The single-core Athlon 64 3800+, operating at the same clock speed, but with half the L2 cache, competed with this dual-core processor.

And here are these wonderful Corsair CMX512-3200XLPRO memory modules, which should reveal the potential of the processor, but even at the nominal frequency they heat up noticeably.

Testing under normal conditions

As always, we start with synthetics, with the most popular and affordable SiSoftware Sandra 2005 information and test package.

Sandra loaded the second core perfectly, thus doubling the result. In synthetics, a doubling of productivity is clearly visible (it will be interesting to check the practical suitability). An interesting result was shown by the memory bandwidth test — Athlon 64 3800+ overtook the dual-core processor by 300 Mb/s. You can’t unequivocally call this a disadvantage, although, perhaps, AMD engineers still have something to «conjure». But, it is likely that this may be a flaw in the test package. We considered it futile to delve into any other synthetic packages, so we turn to more practical tasks. Let’s start with archiving (we compress a 1.3 GB Windows folder with standard settings).

The dual-core processor wins this test by a small margin. On the one hand, the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ has twice the L2 cache, on the other hand, on the second, «idle» core, the operating system can execute background processes, leaving the first one for resource-intensive compression. What else can be done on the second core, while the first is busy with serious work, we will consider a little later, but for now let’s move on to encoding multimedia content.

As we have already noted more than once, for the LAME codec, the processor clock frequency is primarily important. Since the frequencies of the applicants are the same, there is practically no difference in performance.

With video encoding, the situation is slightly different. All codecs on the dual-core system received a performance boost, and the percentage of the increase is determined by the individual capabilities of each. DivX, both 5th and 6th versions, as well as XviD are not initially optimized for multi-threaded encoding, but having «one processor» that is not distracted by background tasks, they have accelerated the work at their full disposal. At the same time, even setting the codec to the highest priority, it was possible to work in the system quite calmly, for example, watch a movie or surf the Internet, and this practically did not affect the encoding speed. Windows Media Encoder and DivX6 Helium multi-threaded codecs received a performance boost of 60-80%. We can assume that in the first part of its positioning (digital content processing) Athlon 64 X2 lived up to expectations. Let’s see how much faster the work with 3D modeling packages and CAD/CAM systems will be.

We have already noted some immunity of the SPECViewperf 8.0 package to multi-core platforms, so the result is not impressive, but positive.

The Cinebench results are more interesting. With the rendering of the test scene in single-threaded (single-processor) mode, both systems coped with the same speed. And when choosing the multi-processor rendering mode, the Athlon 64 X2 almost doubled the performance. The result is just wonderful! Let’s hope that in other packages the result will be close to that obtained, since most of them have long been optimized for operation in multiprocessor systems.

The results of the system-wide packages PCMark’04 and PCMark’05 puzzled us. The fact is that the memory test with the Athlon 64 3800+ processor caused the system to hang, and we were unable to get rid of this annoying fact. Interestingly, the system passed the entire cycle of tests with the S&M 1.7.3 utility, but when working in the packages of interest to us, it hung. Besides, the rest of the results confirmed the opinion that PCMark’05 is somewhat «raw» (the recently released update package should correct the situation, but it appeared after the end of the tests).

We combined the results of all synthetic gaming packages from Futuremark on one graph, since the result for them is the same. In these test packages, there is no performance gain or it is negligible. Therefore, you should not expect a tangible increase in games. But we are investigating this aspect.

Aquamark3 repeats the results already commented above.

In Codecreatures Benchmark Pro, the performance gain is noticeable only on the chart and is only 2%.

Same result in GunMetal Benchmark.

A more tangible result in digital terms was found in Quake 3, but it is elusive to the eye at such a frame rate.

The test results in the most popular games also did not change anything in favor of the Athlon 64 X2. This processor is not for gaming. Actually, the manufacturer himself does not position it in gaming systems.

Multi-threaded or multitasking performance

We’ve already proven the value of Athlon 64 X2 processors in video processing and 3D modeling packages. It remains to check one more facet of positioning. Is a system based on it really suitable «for advanced users and professionals working with several resource-intensive applications at the same time»?

First, let’s see how you can load such a productive processor.

Running the 7-Zip 4.28 archiver with standard settings is unable to load even one core at 100%, and the processor itself is only half loaded.

Running the LAME 3.96.1 encoder loads kernels a little more interesting, but the result is the same — 50% CPU usage.

WinRar 3.50 gives the same 50% result.

But running simultaneously «two resource-intensive applications» in the form of archivers 7-Zip and WinRar manages to almost completely load the processor.

And only when running heterogeneous processes, audio encoding with LAME and data compression with WinRar archiver, it was possible to load Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 100%.

The simultaneous launch of all three programs has changed nothing, except for the execution time of each separately.

It was also interesting to observe the load of processor cores during video encoding.

This is how the cores are loaded when encoding with the DivX 5.2.1 codec. When you restart the charts, they change a little, but the general trend is unchanged — oddly enough, both cores take part (or the «Task Manager» is wrong).

This is the download result when starting DivX 6.0

But the multi-threaded modification of this codec, DivX6 Helium, generating two threads, completely loads the processor.

Finally, let’s turn to the numbers that will show whether it is possible to comfortably relax and work on a modern PC at the same time.

3DMark 2001SE is very demanding on memory bandwidth and processor performance, so we chose it as the interpretation of the system-wide test. As you can see, with two or more background processes, the result is two times different.

Another interesting point, not shown in the graphical form, is the slowdown of one resource-intensive background process on a single-processor configuration. When running LAME and 3DMark 2001SE, the Windows XP operating system gave maximum priority to the latter, which led to a catastrophic slowdown in encoding, but good performance in the main application. In a system with Athlon 64 X2 4800+, this did not happen, since each application was given one core and LAME did not lose performance.

3DMark’05 shows a more uniform result in the graphic part and an interesting result in the processor part. It appears that Windows XP distributes the workload differently in single-processor and dual-processor configurations. In the first case, it allocates maximum resources to the main task to the detriment of the background ones, and in the second it tries to distribute the load more evenly.

Far Cry showed that the Athlon 64 X2 can be played quite well while the system is busy with other tasks. Although it is hard to imagine a situation in which a sane person will run a shooter on top of audio / video encoding or archiving large amounts of data, although this is possible.

Conclusions

Communication with a system using a dual-core processor Athlon 64 X2 4800+ left a lot of positive impressions. It can be described in a few words as follows: excellent stability, high performance, excellent compatibility. In addition, the processors of this series do not suffer from overheating and, accordingly, are not demanding on the cooling system. But before purchasing such a processor in your working system, we recommend that you clearly imagine in what tasks it will make your life easier. If the computer is used for serious work with video, processing large amounts of data, mathematical calculations or work in CAD / CAM systems, then the Athlon 64 X2 will be a profitable investment.

We also remind you that Athlon 64 X2 processors have one very important positive aspect — after updating the BIOS they can be installed in any motherboard with the appropriate processor socket. Now, to increase productivity and obtain a «two-processor» workstation, you only need to replace the processor. Surely there will be those who will like this opportunity. Or maybe someone already appreciated it …

There is also one unpleasant feature, which is connected mainly with the high, but gradually decreasing, price of Athlon 64 X2. Despite such a long-standing announcement and the immediate presence of these processors in the capital’s price lists, unfortunately, dual-core processors continue to be a curiosity in the regions, even seemingly affordable junior models.

We express our gratitude to the AMD representative office in Ukraine for the Athlon 64 X2 processor, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard and Corsair CMX512-3200XLPRO memory modules provided for testing.

We express our gratitude to the company PF «Service» (Dnepropetrovsk) for the equipment provided for testing.
