The «Black Edition» of AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 5000+ features an unlocked multiplier. Unlike the first Black Edition model, the 90nm 6400+, the new processor is produced on a 65 nm process. As a result, it only draws about half as much power as the 6400+, and offers enormous overclocking potential. Pushed to its limit, this processor is faster than an Athlon X2 6000+ or Intel’s Core 2 Duo E6550. Among today’s CPUs, this $130 processor is unique in that its performance can be increased without having to raise either the FSB or the memory frequency, making it a safe choice for any AM2 board.
Let’s get right to it: If you’re considering buying the 5000+ Black Edition, chances are that you intend to overclock it — and we mean really overclock it. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can safely choose the 5000+ EE, which comes with a locked multiplier and costs a bit less. Therefore, this article focuses on the processor’s performance and behavior in its overclocked state, comparing it to other current processors from AMD and Intel.
Of course there’s nothing to keep you from overclocking the Intel processors included for comparison here as well. However, within this article we are considering the 5000+ Black Edition primarily as a CPU upgrade for people with existing AM2 systems, meaning that Intel processors are not an option.

What makes the 5000+ Black Edition especially interesting, aside from the unlocked multiplier, is that it uses the newly introduced G2 stepping. This refined processor stepping allows the processor to stay stable at higher clock speeds without requiring an increase in core voltage. The obvious benefit is that you can put an inexpensive overclocked AMD processor into your PC, and the CPU fan won’t need to run at speeds that make it sound like a turbine.
Thus, thanks to the low thermal power dissipation, you don’t need to spend extra money on a complex cooling solution.

To keep it cool in all situations, the ASUS IceCool thermal technology in Vivobook S 15 uses upgraded 8 mm and 6 mm heat pipes1, and an IceBlade fan that efficiently accelerates heat transfer. The 97-blade fan and impeller are made of a liquid-crystal polymer that means they’re lighter and thinner than ordinary fans.
In addition, the fan uses a fluid-dynamics bearing that’s quieter and has less vibration than an ordinary bearing. The end result is that the mighty CPU can run comfortably at a blistering 45 watts total TDP in Performance mode — with no throttling!

AMD resolves Radeon RX 5000 series black screen issues : GameZ=
The AMD development team is trying to address various issues raised by members of the community on support forums and places like Reddit, including reports of black screens occurring in certain situations . The new Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition (20.2.2) driver release fixes some of these issues, but not all.
“While Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.2.2 resolves many black screen issues, AMD recognizes that some users may still experience black screen or system hang issues during extended periods of gameplay. AMD will continue to closely monitor reports of these issues, AMD said.
It’s still not clear why AMD is having such a hard time coping with the situation.
It could be a combination of culprits, including poor cooling on some cards. For example, Asus recently took out the heatsink mounting screws it used on some of its ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 XT and 5700 cards to put more pressure on the GPU. This was done after complaints about high temperatures on his cards.
The problem may go deeper though. There are many threads and posts on social media, mostly from Radeon RX 5000 owners complaining about black screen issues in various situations. AMD’s latest GPU driver targets five specific black screen scenarios, but AMD notes that it’s not a panacea for the problem.
A total of two dozen bugs have been fixed. Those related to black screen errors include the following:
- Performing a task switch with some Radeon software features enabled or some third-party hardware-accelerated applications running in the background may cause a system hang or black screen.
- When Instant Play is enabled, TDR or black screen may appear when launching games or applications.
