Hardware leaker and Twitter user @Komachi_Ensaka has spotted a very strange AMD Radeon graphics card based on the Navi 21 GPU that’s equipped with just  8GB of memory, down from 16GB of memory typically installed on Navi 21-based Radeon RX 6800/6900-series boards. The product was spotted in the UserBenchmark database. Could this be a new contender for the best graphics cards, or perhaps an OEM-only card?

The card in question carries Navi 21’s device ID (1002 73BF) and subsystem ID (1002 0E3A), which matches up with an AMD Radeon RX 6800 GPU. Assuming it’s not just a faulty reading, or a faked entry, it’s also only equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory.

Rumors about AMD’s intention to build a cheaper Radeon RX 6800 SKU with 8GB of memory have been floating for quite a while, but AMD has never confirmed them, perhaps because the cost of memory is not something that concerns it (and its partners among makers of graphics cards) the most.  There’s also the fact that AMD made a point of how it provided substantially more memory than Nvidia’s competing RTX 30-series parts, and might now be forced to step back to 8GB given the various component shortages.

If AMD is indeed testing and/or mulling a release of a Navi 21-based graphics card with 8GB of memory, there are two ways how AMD could build it:

  • Use a cut-down version of the Navi 21 GPU with half of the memory interfaces enabled and equip the card with four 16Gb GDDR6 memory chips. This would allow the company to make use of its Navi 21 processors with faulty memory controllers/PHYs and/or reduce the bill of materials (BOM) cost of its card. Performance of such a product will likely be rather low in high resolutions and in cases that require more than 8GB of memory.
  • Use a Navi 21 GPU with all of its memory controllers/interfaces enabled, but install 8Gb GDDR6 chips. This would reduce BOM of the card, but will again lower its performance in games/scenes where 8GB of memory is needed, but memory bandwidth would remain the same.

AMD could sell either of such boards to OEMs or on select markets as a Radeon RX 6800 LE or a Radeon RX 6700 LE, depending on the level of performance. Based on the UserBenchmark results, the card in question performs worse than the RX 6800 and better than the RX 6700 XT, which makes an RX 6800 LE more likely. There’s a $100 price gap between those two cards as well, not that suggested etail pricing (SEP) means much these days.

As with all such leaks and rumors, sprinkle liberally with salt. It could be a prototype, a fake, or a future product. Without sufficient supply, just about any GPU with a reasonable price would be welcomed by gamers. We asked AMD for comment, but in general the response on unannounced cards is «no comment.»

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT features Navi 21 KXTX GPU, supports Hynix and Samsung 18Gbps memory

AMD RX 6950XT graphics card will ship with Navi 21 KXTX GPU, as revealed by the leaked BIOS.

Chiphell community was quick to find BIOSes in TechPowerUP database. Although they were already removed, they confirm high TGP ranges for RX 6950XT SKU, their power limits and what memory they support.

Two of the cards listed there were MSI RX 6950XT GAMING X TRIO and SAPPHIRE RX 6950XT NITRO+ Pure. Although the latter has power limit set to 325W it can further be adjusted by 20%, which means as much as 390W of power. The power limit for MSI card is 332W and up to +12% increase, which is 372W. Do note that those are TGP (GPU+memory), not TBP. This means that full graphics card power will easily be beyond 400W.

The RX 6950XT model will ship with Navi 21 KXTX GPU, not XTXH as previously rumored. This means that AMD now has a fourth variant of Navi 21 GPU for its consumer Radeon series. Although, this is just a codename that could ‘theoretically’ be flashed over XT or XTXH variants.

However, there is a reason why one should not do it. The BIOS only supports 18 Gbps memory from HYNIX and Samsung. The latter appears to be the same variant as RX 6500XT memory uses (designated as HC18).

Rumors and leaks about the Radeon RX 6000 (Navi 2X) 2nd generation RDNA graphics cards, which will debut next week, have been flooding the web lately. A new and rather interesting piece of information concerns the flagship GPU Navi 21 (Sienna Cichlid), confirming earlier reports of record high operating frequencies.

Getting to know the software

Recent data indicates that GPU Navi 21 will be the basis for at least three Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. The XT variant of GPU Navi 21 will be used in the flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT, codenamed Big Navi. Along with the Navi 21 XT, there is also a selected exclusive version of the Navi 21 XTX, designed for the potential Radeon RX 6900 XT Limited Edition (similar to the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50 th Anniversary for the higher segment), as well as a stripped down version of the Navi 21 XL.

All three cards based on Navi 21 GPUs will receive 16 GB of 256-bit GDDR6 video memory, complemented by special Infinity Cache caching technology, which should provide memory bandwidth parity with competing RTX 3080/3090 models, using faster GDDR6X memory.

New data indicates that the base Navi 21 XT GPU in non-reference cards from AMD’s AIB partners will be able to overclock to an impressive 2. 4 GHz in Game Clock mode — no other GPU on the market today can boast such a high operating frequency. The TGP (total graphics power) is expected to be 255W. That is, the TBP (total board power) value should be at the level of the GeForce RTX 3080 (~ 320 W). At the same time, the peak frequency of the GPU Radeon RX 6900 XT in the reference version will be limited to 2300 MHz.

It is not entirely clear what these impressive operating frequencies will mean in practice. Judging by the official Radeon RX 6900 XT performance benchmarks that AMD shared during the recent Ryzen 5000 announcement, the new Reds flagship will definitely be faster than the RTX 3070, but will it be able to compete with the RTX 3080? This question still remains unanswered.

The full announcement of the RX 6000 series of graphics cards, which will compete with the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series adapters, will be held on October 28th.

Unidentified people have published photos of the video card AMD RDNA 2 Navi 21, focused on cryptocurrency mining

The first photos of the upcoming mining video card from AMD have been published on the network. This is reported by the Internet portal Wccftech with reference to the Vietnamese edition.

The fact that the video card belongs to AMD, according to the publication, is confirmed by the logo of the company XFX, which mainly produces chips for AMD.

The publication also notes that the graphics processors of the as yet unreleased video card may be based on the RDNA 2 architecture. This is because no other recent AMD video card has used a similar rear panel cover configuration.

The GPU could be the 7nm Navi 21 graphics core. Note that AMD has already used this core in its other products, the Radeon RX 6800 (XT) and Radeon RX 6900 XT.

The card itself does not have any active cooling solution. The card has a standard plastic heatsink cover, a two-slot PCI-E 4.0 x16 expansion format, and a large aluminum heatsink. Also, in view of its purpose, as seen above, the device does not have connectors for connecting to the display. At the time of writing, the technical characteristics and price of the video card remain unknown. It is also unknown when the novelty can go on sale.

Meanwhile, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang advises not to wait for the easing of the shortage in the video card market in the next six months. Demand will outstrip supply due to global chip shortages throughout 2022, he said.
