We continue to introduce our readers to video cards based on the new family of AMD Radeon 7000 (Southern Islands) graphics processors with the Graphics Core Next microarchitecture. Today, after the massive gaming video card ASUS Radeon HD 7770 Direct CU, the graphics accelerator 9 hit our test lab.0007 ASUS Radeon HD 7750 ( ASUS HD7750-1GD5 ), on the example of which we will study the features of the Cape Verde Pro graphics chip ( Radeon HD 7750 ). AMD positions products based on the Radeon HD 7770/7750 as video cards available to every gamer, allowing you to enjoy all modern games with DirectX 11 API support, albeit not at the maximum image quality settings, at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (Full HD). In addition to this, the new Graphics Core Next architecture, the features of which we talked about in one of our previous articles, allows you to effectively use discrete graphics adapters from the AMD Radeon 7000 line to solve a wide range of «non-gaming» tasks: from video encoding to mathematical calculations and archiving files.

The younger version of the 28-nm Cape Verde graphics chip traditionally received the prefix Pro in the title. Compared to the «full-fledged» Cape Verde XT core (Radeon HD 7770), the GPU in question received a number of significant simplifications, which made it possible to set the recommended price for solutions on it at $109. The graphics core Cape Verde Pro (Radeon HD 7750) «lost» two CU-blocks out of 10: the number of texture units was reduced from 40 to 32, and stream processors — from 640 to 512. The number of ROP blocks remains the same and is equal to 16. The GPU and memory frequencies were lowered to 800 and 1125 (4500) MHz, respectively, while the video memory interface remained 128-bit.

We also note that the newcomer is equipped with one gigabyte of GDDR5 memory, and its typical power consumption should not exceed 55 W, which is why video cards based on the Radeon HD 7750 graphics processor are not equipped with connectors for additional power. Considering that the «reference» design of the Radeon HD 7750, developed by AMD engineers, also involves the use of a single-syllable cooler, in our opinion, the new product may be of interest not only to budget-conscious gamers, but also owners of miniature high-performance class systems (HTPCs). The table below also shows the main characteristics of the new GPU in comparison with the main competitors and predecessors:

ASUS positions the video card in question as slightly overclocked by the manufacturer, however, the GPU frequency was increased relative to the standard by only 20 MHz, and the memory operates at an effective frequency of 4600 MHz, which is only 100 MHz higher than recommended by AMD engineers. Due to the fact that the factory increase in frequencies cannot be called significant, the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 (HD7750-1GD5) graphics accelerator does not belong to the TOP series, because such “overclocking” is unlikely to be noticeable in real applications, however, the positioning of the video card on the market as “overclocked” allows you to set a slightly higher price for it. As for the rest of the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 specifications given in the table, there are no differences from the reference sample. We will describe in detail the proprietary cooling system used, which distinguishes this product from many similar solutions, in the corresponding section of our review, and we will start our acquaintance with the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 graphics adapter traditionally by examining its packaging.

The packaging of the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 video card is made in a familiar and recognizable style for ASUS graphics accelerators. Its front side is decorated with logos of technologies supported by the video card and some of its characteristics. Particular attention is drawn to the large inscription «GPU Tweak», which indicates the presence in the delivery set of a proprietary utility of the same name, designed for overclocking and «advanced» control of the card’s operating modes.

On the back of the package, the manufacturer placed the main specifications of the video card in 12 languages (including Russian), a brief connection diagram for displays with various interfaces, and an advertising description of the key features of the video card.

The list of system requirements for the computer in which you plan to install the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 is located on one of the sides of the package. Based on the recommendation on the box, the power supply in such a system should have a power of at least 400 W and be able to deliver up to 40 A on the 12 V line. Whereas none of the existing 400 W power supplies will be able to deliver 40 A on the circuit 12 V, here we clearly encountered a typo. Given that the peak power consumption of the video card in question does not exceed 75 W, in our opinion, a high-quality power supply even with a power of 350 W will be quite enough for solutions based on the Radeon HD 7750.

The delivery set of the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 video card corresponds to the budgetary status of the product and contains only the most necessary accessories for the operation of the graphics accelerator:

  • CD with drivers and utilities;

  • Instructions for installing and operating a video card;

  • DVI-to-VGA adapter.

Just like on the «reference» sample, the set of interfaces for image output is represented by DVI-I, HDMI 1.4a ports (with the ability to transmit 7.1-channel audio and 3D images) and DisplayPort 1.2. Given the presence of another adapter bundled with the video card, the user should not have any problems connecting a monitor, plasma panel or projector to it. It is also important that solutions based on the Radeon HD 7750 support ultra-high resolution monitors and plasma panels (7,680 × 4,320 pixels), which at the moment is a good start for the future. We also recall that thanks to the support of AMD Eyefinity 2.0 technology, up to 6 monitors with a total resolution of up to 819 can be connected to the considered graphics accelerator.2 x 8192 dots, however, to connect more than three image output devices, you will need to purchase additional active adapters.

The ASUS Radeon HD 7750 printed circuit board is made on a black textolite, and the design and arrangement of elements on it generally repeat those for the «reference» sample developed by AMD engineers.

2+1 phase power regulation circuit using simple APW709 PWM controller8 manufactured by Anpec Electronics. As we mentioned above, the tested video card is not equipped with connectors for additional power, and, therefore, consumes no more than 75 watts in load mode.

The reverse side of the PCB is almost devoid of features except for a few VRM components.

In the case of the Radeon HD 7750 GPU, AMD does not provide multiple video adapters for joint graphics calculations using the CrossFireX bridge, and support for this technology is provided only at the software level.

This is what the Cape Verde Pro graphics chip looks like, made according to the standards of the 28 nm process technology, which is the central part of the video card in question. As we already mentioned, in the version for the Radeon HD 7750 it includes 512 unified processors and 16 ROPs, and data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out via a 128-bit bus. The screenshot above shows its main characteristics.

In previous articles, we have already noted that recently the GPU-Z utility allows you to determine such a characteristic of a graphics chip as ASIC Quality. A high value of this parameter indicates a low GPU supply voltage and allows us to hope for a better overclocking potential when using air and liquid cooling. At the same time, for experiments with overclocking using extreme cooling methods (liquid nitrogen, helium, dry ice), video cards with a low ASIC Quality score are better suited. In our case, the ASIC Quality value was 69,four%.

GDDR5 video memory with a total volume of 1 GB is assembled using four 256 MB chips manufactured by Hynix. The chips are marked H5GQ2h34MFR T2C and, according to the documentation, can operate at an effective frequency of up to 6 GHz. Considering that the memory in the tested video card, even with a slight factory overclock, operates at a frequency of 4600 MHz, it makes sense to try to speed it up during manual overclocking.

The cooling system of the ASUS Radeon HD 7750 video card has a rather attractive appearance and, unlike the «reference» cooler, occupies 2 slots.

Under the plastic casing with a built-in 80 mm fan that supports PWM control, a medium-sized aluminum heatsink is hidden, which is in contact with the graphics core through a layer of thermal paste. Memory chips and power elements of the power supply system do not have contact with the main radiator and are not equipped with additional cooling, which does not look like a critical drawback, given the low declared level of power consumption and heat dissipation of the solution in question.

To evaluate the efficiency of the cooling system used, we ran our standard set of tests using the FurMark utility. We conducted tests in two cooler operating modes: automatic control and maximum fan speed.

In automatic mode, with a continuous maximum load, the temperature of the graphics core did not exceed 60 degrees, which is a very good result. At the same time, the fan worked at only 33% of its power, producing a slightly noticeable level of noise.

After we set the fan speed to maximum and tested again, we recorded a decrease in the maximum GPU temperature by 12 degrees, but the noise level emitted by the cooler increased significantly and began to stand out from the general background of the system.

When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically lowered, resulting in lower power consumption and heat dissipation. The cooler in this mode operates at only 10% of the maximum power, making almost no noise.

In our opinion, the use of a two-slot cooling system for a video card based on the Radeon HD 7750 looks like overkill, given the low heat dissipation of the 28-nm Cape Verde Pro chip and the focus of this solution on ordinary gamers who are not too keen on overclocking and optimizing additional parameters. At the same time, the installation of a compact single-layer cooling system would significantly expand the list of compatible cases and motherboards.
