Snapdragon 845 platform highlights

When reviewing the previous platform (Snapdragon 835), we already said that Qualcomm, when developing its processors, adheres to a peculiar version of the tick-tock principle invented by Intel. The reviewed platform has become the clearest confirmation of this approach.

All the basic principles remained unchanged. The processor is based on 10nm FinFET technology. The chip runs on new cores with its own Kryo trademark. At the same time, they are based on already proven ARM architectural solutions (Cortex-A75 and Cortex-65). The same eight-core structure with two clusters of 4 cores is used. Finally, the same hardware manufacturer remained — the Korean Samsung.

Of course, there are many changes as well. It is precisely these additional details that are designed to bring serious innovations to the new generation of smartphones. However, laptops too. After all, ultrabooks from several well-known manufacturers will also be equipped with the Snapdragon 845 processor.

Eight cores of the platform are divided into two clusters. The performance cores of the Kryo 385 are equipped with a 2 MB L3 cache. They operate at a frequency of 2.8 GHz. Qualcomm insists that the latest Snapdragons not be called processors or systems-on-chips. The manufacturer prefers the name «mobile platform» and assures that there is a fundamental difference. There are two sides of the phenomenon. Firstly, all this is purely marketing troubles. On the other hand, for a long time any Snapdragon is not just hardware, but also a variety of software solutions.

Another interesting point. The manufacturer is seeing a change in attitude towards synthetic benchmarks. Thus, Qualcomm recognizes the ability of tests to give an overall impression of system performance. However, at the same time, company representatives claim that today there are no tests at all that can adequately assess the speed of other nodes in addition to the GPU, central processor, and memory.

In the West, Qaulcomm is often called the monopoly of the mobile platform market. However, one can hardly fully agree with this statement. It roughly corresponds to the fact that Intel allegedly plays the role of a monopolist in the PC processor market. Yes, there is total dominance here. However, there are other manufacturers, and they cannot be discounted.

For example, Samsung quite successfully uses Exynoss processors on its flagship smartphones, which are in no way inferior to Qualcomm products. A similar story with Huawei, which releases HiSilicon Kirin. Let’s not forget the recent trendsetter, Apple. True, there is one small subtlety here. All three listed companies use their processors only on their own products. They do not supply chips to competitors. Here you can still remember such a piquant moment — Samsung will produce the Snapdragon 845. Finally, it’s worth mentioning Mediatek, Qualcomm’s only real competitor on the market. But — only in the budget and medium segments.

During testing, it was possible to test many devices based on the Snapdragon 835. However, there was not much point in comparing the Snapdragon 845 with a similar platform of the previous generation, of course. It is more interesting to look at the differences in performance between the A11 Bionic based iPhone X and the Exynos 8895 Octa powered Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Interestingly, according to the GeekBench 4 test, the Snapdragon 845 is noticeably inferior to the flagship from Apple.

Before the start of testing, tables with the results of parameters that were recognized as normal were distributed. A minimum of three checks were made for each test. The results differed slightly each time, and the average values ​​were summarized in the tables. Sometimes these indicators turned out to be slightly lower than those that were determined by the normal representatives of the manufacturer. In principle, even with very ideal values, the Snapdragon 845 is noticeably inferior to the iPhone X in processor tests.

Comparison of performance according to AnTuTu is very conditional. For the rest of the devices, the tables show the values ​​​​for the sixth version of the benchmark, and the Snapdragon 845 was tested on the seventh. This means that not only the tests themselves could change here, but also the logic for calculating points.

The Snapdragon 845 did not run the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited test, which is used to evaluate GPU performance. The rest of the results on the SlingShot Extreme and SlingShot Unlimited tests are generally okay. Note that during testing, there was a noticeable heating of the smartphone case. True, there are no such obvious problems as were typical for the Snapdragon 810. On the other hand, we are still talking only about the reference version of the device.

Failed to run on Snapdragon 845 MDP and version 3 of GFX Benchmark. However, company representatives have repeatedly pointed out that the algorithms of the old benchmarks simply do not know how to work normally with the latest platform. Therefore, the results of such tests should not be given much importance.

The novelty was also tested on Octane, Spider, Javascript JetStream tests. Testing was carried out through the Chrome browser. Here the parameters were found to be normal.

In conclusion, two conclusions can be drawn. The performance of Snapdragon 845 has increased significantly compared to the previous platform, however, not as much as one might hope. But Qualcomm products are still far from the leader in processor tests, iPhone X.

However, another circumstance is more important here. Apple processors are still not available to Android smartphone manufacturers. Therefore, it is not necessary to talk about their universality. Quite another thing is the Qualcomm platforms available to all players in the mobile communications market. By the way, Snapdragon 845 is installed not only on smartphones, but also on laptops.
