Tests Intel Core i7-4770k

9004 9004 , according to our tests.

The performance of 4 cores, if any, and performance per core has the greatest impact on the result, since most games do not fully use more than 4 cores.

The speed of caches and working with RAM is also important.

Speed in office use

Performance in everyday work such as browsers and office applications.

The performance of 1 core has the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications use only one, ignoring the rest.

Similarly, many professional applications such as various CAD programs ignore multi-threaded performance.

Speed in heavy applications

Performance in resource-intensive tasks loading a maximum of 8 cores.

The performance of all cores and their number has the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications willingly use all the cores and increase the speed accordingly.

At the same time, certain periods of work can be demanding on the performance of one or two cores, for example, applying filters in the editor.

Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems with and without overclocking. Thus, you see the average values corresponding to the processor.

Different tasks require different CPU strengths. A system with few fast cores and low memory latency will be fine for the vast majority of games, but will be inferior to a system with a lot of slow cores in a rendering scenario.

We believe that a minimum 4/4 (4 physical cores and 4 threads) processor is suitable for a budget gaming PC. At the same time, some games can load it at 100%, slow down and freeze, and performing any tasks in the background will lead to a drop in FPS.

Ideally, the budget shopper should aim for a minimum of 4/8 and 6/6. A gamer with a big budget can choose between 6/12, 8/8 and 8/16. Processors with 10 and 12 cores can perform well in games with high frequency and fast memory, but are overkill for such tasks. Also, buying for the future is a dubious undertaking, since in a few years many slow cores may not provide sufficient gaming performance.

When choosing a processor for your work, consider how many cores your programs use. For example, photo and video editors can use 1-2 cores when working with filtering, and rendering or converting in the same editors already uses all threads.

Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems both with overclocking (maximum value in the table) and without (minimum). A typical result is shown in the middle, the more filled in the color bar, the better the average result among all tested systems.

Benchmarks

Benchmarks were run on stock hardware, that is, without overclocking and with factory settings. Therefore, on overclocked systems, the points can noticeably differ upwards. Also, small performance changes may be due to the BIOS version.

Not so long ago, a presentation of a new architecture from Intel took place, and we had at our disposal a representative of a high-performance line, the processor Intel Core i7-4770K . The novelty belongs to the fourth generation of Intel Core processors and is based on Haswell architecture. You can get acquainted with the features of the advanced architecture in more detail in the material devoted to acquaintance with the Intel Core i5-4670K. In addition to the previously published material, I would like to note a few more features of the new architecture.

One of the improvements that was not covered in the previous review is the Quick Sync block built into the graphics core. Thanks to its optimization, the developers have achieved an increase in the energy efficiency of the system as a whole, because each of us agree that one of the typical tasks of a PC is video playback. Now economical Quick Sync in the new Haswell architecture can already work with SVC (Scalable Video Coding) at the hardware level, decode MJPEG (motion JPEG) and encode video in MPEG2 format. Particular attention should also be paid to the fact that compatibility is implemented when encoding and decoding with video in 4K resolution (4096×2304, 4096×2160 and 3840×2160). Such gigantic dimensions will be relevant for those buyers who already have monitors (TVs) in excess of high resolution.

Another change that was aimed at the economy of the new platform is the increase in the number of zones of the processor chip, which, in the absence of activity, can be independently disconnected from the power bus. In addition to this, a fairly large part of the power converter circuit was transferred to the processor chip. At the same time, the third-level cache began to operate at its own frequency, which may be different from the core frequency. This decision is due to the fact that systems based on the CPU of the past architecture could wake up when the graphics core accessed the L3 cache. Such a change will be especially in demand in mobile devices, where the struggle is actually for every watt of energy consumed.

And, of course, the developers note a number of improvements in the organization of Intel Hyper-Threading technology, which should become more efficient compared to previous implementations.

Well, the gaps are filled, and we are moving on to a direct acquaintance with the processor Intel Core i7-4770K .

Appearance

We are testing an OEM version of the processor, so we cannot get acquainted with the actual packaging and bundle. However, you will probably agree that this is not the main thing.

There are no external differences from the previously reviewed processors. The processor cover has basic information about the CPU: marking — SR147, model — Intel Core i7-4770K, base clock speed — 3.5 GHz, as well as the serial number of the model. Processor made in Malaysia. Recall that the presence of the letter «K» in the name of the model indicates that the processor multiplier is unlocked. Such models are more focused on overclocking enthusiasts.

The back side of the CPU is identical to the previously reviewed Intel Core i5-4670K model. Please note that the new processors are designed for use in motherboards with Socket LGA1150, which is not compatible with the outdated Socket LGA1155.

Analyzing these specifications, we can easily conclude that we have a «clone» of the previously released Intel Core i7-3770K CPU model. Of course, there are differences: a graphics core model, an updated set of instructions, and a new processor socket, but the key differences are hidden in the architecture of the solution itself, which we will try to evaluate with you in this review.

These specifications are fully confirmed by the auxiliary utility. The base clock frequency corresponds to 3.5 GHz, while the core voltage is only 0.971 V, which indicates a fairly good level of energy efficiency. The processor itself is made according to the norms of the 22-nm process technology based on the Haswell architecture. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the TDP of the processor has increased from 75 W to 84 W, when compared with the «similar» representative of the previous generation.

When Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 is enabled, the frequency increases to 3.9 GHz, while the core voltage increases to 1.13 V. As before, this technology works when the CPU is under load, which allows a little faster to deal with difficult tasks.

One of the rather serious changes in the operation of the new generation of processors was the reduction of the idle frequency threshold. Now it is not 1600 MHz, as it was before, but 800 MHz. This reduces the core voltage to 0.75 V. This innovation has the potential to provide lower power consumption when the system is idle.

There were no changes in the cache sizes, but do not forget that the bandwidth of the L1 and L2 caches has changed. Recall that the L3 cache began to operate at its own frequency asynchronously with the computing cores. Such a change in the operation of the third level cache has the potential to cause an increase in latency, especially considering that no compensation for this phenomenon in the form of an increase in throughput has occurred. A number of sources provide information that such a change in the third level cache had practically no effect on its performance, so there is no particular reason for concern. One way or another, but in this CPU model there is 64 KB of L1 cache per core, of which 32 KB is for data caching and the same amount for instructions, 256 KB of L2 cache per core and L3 cache is common to the entire processor. Its size is 8 MB.

The dual channel DDR3 memory controller can support both DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 memory. Despite the fact that the manufacturer indicates in the specification as the maximum declared support for DDR3-1600 memory, however, faster overlocker modules also work without any complaints up to 2666 MHz. We, as before, will use the memory with the maximum frequency according to the specification when testing.

As a small «bonus» processor Intel Core i7-4770K has an integrated graphics core Intel HD Graphics 4600. Actually, we already got acquainted with it in the review of the Intel Core i5-4670K. The asset of this iGPU has 20 computing units, which, in general, is not enough. Please note that, in addition to the increased number of computational units, there was also an increase in the performance of almost all fixed-functionality pixel processing units, as well as texture samplers.

In terms of frequency characteristics, the frequency fluctuation during operation occurs in the range from 350 MHz to 1250 MHz. Thus, we may well hope for a performance increase, albeit a small one, compared to the Intel Core i5-4670K video core.

Benchmarks Intel Core i7-4770K

Speed in games

Performance in games and similar applications, according to our tests.

Speed of numerical operations

Simple household tasks

Demanding games and tasks

Extreme load

Different tasks require different strengths of the CPU.

Speed in games

Performance in games and similar applications, according to our tests.
