Steam Deck :: Deck Verified

See at a glance how games will play on Steam Deck.

With Steam Deck, we’re bringing your Steam Library to a new form factor—a portable gaming PC. While many games run great on Deck out of the box, this shift means there are some games that, while they may be great on a desktop PC, aren’t a great experience on Steam Deck.

We want it to be easy for you to find great gaming experiences on Steam Deck, so we’ve designed a system to do just that.

Learn more about the Steam Deck Compatibility program.

Recently Verified

Valve is reviewing the entire Steam catalog on Deck.

After each game is reviewed, it is categorized for its level of compatibility of Steam Deck. You’ll see these categories on Steam, when you’re browsing your library or shopping for games on Deck.

Four categories of Deck compatibility

Verified

The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.

Playable

The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play*.

Unsupported

The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck.

Unknown

We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.

*E.g. requiring user to manually select a community controller config, needing to use the touchscreen to navigate a launcher, etc.

Games that check these four boxes are Deck Verified.

Input

The title should have full controller support, use appropriate controller input icons, and automatically bring up the on-screen keyboard when needed.

Display

The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.

Seamlessness

The title shouldn’t display any compatibility warnings, and if there’s a launcher it should be navigable with a controller.

System Support

If running through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton. This includes anti-cheat support.

Steam Store on Deck

The first tab in the Steam Store shows only games that are great on Steam Deck. The rest of the tabs show the full Store with the entire catalog of games.

Compatibility details

In your library or the store, you can see Steam Deck compatibility details for every title that has been reviewed, giving you the information you need to inform your playing and purchasing decisions.

Your Steam Library on Deck

When you visit your Library on Steam Deck, you’ll automatically see the compatibility rating of each game, indicating the kind of experience you can expect when playing. You can also dynamically filter any view in your library by compatibility rating if you’re looking for specific sorts of experiences.

Steam Deck compatibility review is ongoing.

The Steam Deck compatibility review process is ongoing: there are tens of thousands of titles already released on Steam, and new titles and game updates publish every day. Additionally, we’re constantly adding features and improvements to the Deck itself that enable previously-Unsupported games to play, and are working hard to make sure the compatibility ratings you see for your games reflect the most current information.

Game won’t launch — why and what to do

If you’re having a game (or games) that won’t launch on Windows 10, 8 or Windows 7, this guide details the possible and most common causes, and what to do, to fix the situation.

When the game reports some kind of error, the way to fix it is usually easier. When it immediately closes at startup, without reporting anything, sometimes you have to guess what exactly causes startup problems, but despite this, there are usually solutions. nine0003

The main reasons why a particular game may not start are as follows (all of which will be discussed in more detail later):

    1. The necessary library files for launching the game are missing. Typically a DirectX or Visual C++ DLL. Usually you will see an error message with this file, but not always.
    2. Older games may not run on newer operating systems. For example, games 10-15 years old may not work on Windows 10 (but this is usually solved). nine0006
    3. Windows 10 and 8 built-in antivirus (Windows Defender), as well as some third-party antiviruses, may prevent unlicensed games from running.
    4. Video card drivers missing. At the same time, novice users often do not know that they do not have video card drivers installed, since the device manager shows “Standard VGA adapter” or “Microsoft basic video adapter”, and when updating through the device manager, it is reported that the correct driver is installed. Although such a driver means that there is no driver and a standard one is used, on which many games will not work. nine0006
    5. Compatibility issues on the part of the game itself — unsupported hardware, lack of RAM, and the like.

And now more about each of the causes of problems with the launch of games and how to fix them.

    Required DLL files are missing

One of the most common reasons why a game won’t launch is that some required DLLs are missing to run the game. Usually, you get a message about what exactly is missing. nine0003

    • If it is reported that the launch is not possible because the computer does not have a DLL file whose name begins with D3D (except D3DCompiler_47.dll), xinput, X3D, the matter is in the DirectX libraries. The fact is that in Windows 10, 8 and 7 by default there are not all DirectX components and often they need to be reinstalled. You can do this using the web installer from the Microsoft website (it will automatically detect what is missing on your computer, install and register the necessary DLLs), you can download it here: https://www. microsoft.com/ru-ru/download/ 35 (There is a similar error, but not directly related to DirectX — Cannot find dxgi.dll). nine0006
    • If the error refers to a file that starts with MSVC, it is because some of the Visual C++ Redistributable libraries are missing. Ideally, you need to know which ones you need and download them from the official site (moreover, what is important, both x64 and x86 versions, even if you have 64-bit Windows). But you can download everything at once, described in the second method in the article How to download Visual C ++ Redistributable 2008-2017.

These are the main libraries that are usually missing on a PC by default and without which games may not run. However, if we are talking about some kind of «branded» DLL from the game developer (ubiorbitapi_r2_loader.dll, CryEA.dll, vorbisfile.dll and the like), or steam_api.dll and steam_api64.dll, and your game is not licensed, then the reason The absence of these files is usually because the antivirus removed them (for example, Windows 10 Defender removes such modified game files by default). This option will be discussed further in Section 3. nine0003

    Old game won’t run

The next most common reason is that the old game won’t run on new versions of Windows.

    Helps here:

    • Launching the game in compatibility mode with one of the previous versions of Windows (see, for example, Windows 10 Compatibility Mode).
    • For very ancient games that were originally developed under DOS, use DOSBox.

The built-in antivirus is blocking the launch of the game

Another common reason, given that not all users buy licensed versions of games, is the operation of the built-in Windows Defender antivirus in Windows 10 and 8. It can block the launch of the game (it just closes immediately after launch), as well as delete files of the necessary game libraries that have been modified compared to the original ones. nine0003

The correct option here is to purchase games. The second method is to uninstall the game, temporarily disable Windows Defender (or another antivirus), reinstall the game, add the folder with the installed game to the antivirus exceptions (how to add a file or folder to the Windows defender exceptions), enable the antivirus.

    Missing graphics card drivers

If your computer does not have the original graphics card drivers installed (almost always NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon or Intel HD drivers), the game may not work. At the same time, everything will be fine with the image in Windows, some games may even start, and the device manager may write that the necessary driver is already installed (but be aware that if it says Standard VGA adapter or Basic Microsoft video adapter, then there is definitely no driver). nine0003

The correct fix here is to install the correct driver for your video card from the NVIDIA, AMD or Intel official website, or sometimes from the laptop manufacturer’s website for your device model. If you don’t know what graphics card you have, see How to find out what graphics card your computer or laptop has.

    Compatibility issues

This case is more rare and usually occurs when you try to run a new game on an old computer. The reason may lie in insufficient system resources to run the game, in a disabled paging file (yes, there are games that will not run without it), or, for example, in the fact that you are still working on Windows XP (many games will not start in this system).
