Testing the youngest AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor in the new line and studying the effect of the drive on application tests
Testing AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X processors: new Zen2 microarchitecture and already 12 cores on the familiar AM4
platform to sum up, it would be absolutely wrong. Why is this processor so interesting? At least by the fact that it is the youngest and cheapest among AMD solutions based on the new microarchitecture. At the same time, it is equipped with six cores and supports SMT — just a year ago, these were the best Intel desktop processors for the mainstream platform. AMD, however, already then offered eight-core processors, but each of the Zen / Zen + cores was still less efficient than Skylake and its derivatives. As a result, when fully loaded, the eight-core Ryzen 7 was approximately equal in performance to the six-core Core i7, and if the work was not for all the cores, it even lagged behind them. However, as our testing of the Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 93900X, the company’s new microarchitecture has become a big step forward, so when comparing «core to core» we can talk about its superiority over Core (or at least parity). And in this regard, the cheapest «carrier» of new technologies is extremely interesting from a practical point of view.
But it’s boring to just take and test one processor, and even using the «outgoing» method. Therefore, we decided to dot the «» in another question : the impact of the disk system on processor performance. More precisely, the entire system, but when solving «heavy» tasks, mostly «loading» the platform, and not the periphery. It is clear that under such conditions, there should not be a significant influence of drives: we do not measure the launch time of programs, and in any case, loading data is much faster than processing it. Moreover, we have received results confirming this in one way or another more than once, but we have never encountered the opposite. However, the opinion that a «slow SSD» can «spoil» the performance of a fast processor when encoding video, for example, or that Optane will speed up the «development» of RAW files, exists. And not to say that it is rare. Therefore, an extra practical check is never superfluous. Moreover, if it is possible to carry it out on a large number of configurations. Yes, and drive performance tests are included in the set of tests according to our methodology — we do not use them when comparing processors, but we always do it anyway. Today they will be useful to us.
Test stand configuration
We don’t need a lot of processors: two AMD Ryzen and two Intel Core.

The first is simple — of course, the Ryzen 5 3600 itself and its immediate predecessor Ryzen 5 2600. The latter, by the way, the company will continue to ship at least until the end of this year — unlike faster models. The reason is clear: the new models are better from any point of view and just as well suited to commercially available boards, but the Ryzen 5 2600 is slightly cheaper than the Ryzen 5 3600 (retail, however, is still only is noticeably cheaper than ). At the same time, only APUs are lower in the AMD assortment, which have not yet switched to the new microarchitecture either, and APUs are quad-core at best. Therefore, as a budget solution for a computer with a discrete graphics card, the Ryzen 5 2600 at first glance is still suitable. But it makes sense to figure out whether it is necessary to save so much or is it better to pay extra.

With rivals from the Intel camp, everything is also simple: in terms of technical parameters, the Core i7-8700K is closer, but in terms of price positioning, Ryzen 5 has always intersected exclusively with Core i5. As a rule, they turned out to be even cheaper, although they were consistently faster on average (often there was a twofold difference in the number of computation threads). Therefore, you don’t need to select anything special — just take the older Core i5-9600K and that’s it.
The biggest variety is in the hoppers. We usually test all systems with the Corsair Force LE 960 GB SSD: this is a mid-range SATA model (or even slightly below it), but with enough for the applications used in performance. This sufficiency (as well as necessity ) we will check once again. To do this, we will use two top-end SSDs in our own way: Gigabyte Aorus NVMe Gen4 SSD 2 TB and Intel Optane SSD 905P 480 GB. The asset of the first is high capacity and support for the PCIe 4.0 interface. To realize these capabilities, we had to conduct all tests on a board with an AMD X570 chipset — the probability of «meeting» which with Ryzen 5 is probably lower than seeing a dinosaur on Nevsky Prospekt 🙂 But purely for tests — why not. Moreover, Optane is even farther away from the segment of mass and inexpensive computers. But these are the only drives on the market (at the moment) with faster memory than NAND flash. And although PCIe 3.0 is not PCIe 4.0, it is still many times faster than SATA. On the charts of these test subjects, we’ll label both «PCIe 4.0» and «Optane» respectively, with the base case being «SATA SSD».
But you can try not only faster, but also slower interfaces. In particular, Windows 10 has already evolved to such an extent that modern computers (at least on new boards) work fine with our SSD when connected to a USB port using some adapters. In practice, it turned out that the complete one from a portable external hard drive Seagate Backup Plus of about 2012-2013 is suitable (hereinafter we will call it “USB SSD”). We also exacerbated the potential problem of lack of performance by cloning the system, along with software and data, to a SanDisk Extreme Pro 256 GB USB flash drive: this is still the fastest solution in its class, but from «full» modern SSDs, according to disk tests, this option lags significantly. Let’s see how it will affect. Well, at the same time, let’s check how the attempt to use a hard drive as a system drive will affect, for which we took the Toshiba MG08 with a capacity of as much as 16 TB — walk like that 🙂 And these are the last two options: «Flash drive» and «Winchester».
Test methodology
As mentioned above, we were primarily interested in “closing” the gaps for the test results according to the “old” methodology, so today we will use the iXBT.com Performance Measurement Method based on real applications of the 2017 sample and related with it Methodology for measuring power consumption when testing processors.
Detailed results for all tests are available as a complete results spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel 97-2003), where we added the results of the Ryzen 5 3600 with a «regular» SSD. And the rest related to today’s topic is too specific, so they can be found in the form of a separate table (in the same format).
And let us remind you that directly in the articles we use already processed data: everything is normalized relative to the reference system (AMD FX-8350 with 16 GB of memory, GeForce GTX 1070 video card and Corsair Force LE 960 GB SSD) and grouped by areas of computer application.
iXBT Application Benchmark 2017
In principle, in this group of programs, the i7-8700K did not really shine before, but just a year ago it still was the best processor for LGA1151. And then Ryzen 5 could not compete with it — despite the equal number of cores and computation threads. But the new models of this family no longer compete with it — they have gone far ahead. As for the choice of a disk system, in this case, in fact, even hard drives are “not hopeless”. A USB flash drive is also not much better (and mass models of flash drives would be even worse), but the gap from all the others does not exceed 5%, and the participants are practically indistinguishable in the results. In any case, all processors are “loaded” with work in such a way that almost anyone can “bring shells” at such a pace.
What’s funny, Blender turned out to be a little susceptible to the drive, although this resulted in only a 2% loss of «mechanics» to everyone else. But that’s the way it should be—we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see exactly the same results. Well, for an inexpensive processor, the results are simply excellent: although it never caught up with the Core i7-8700K, it’s impossible to demonstrate miracles at every turn.
The case when «extra» threads are not needed, so the old Ryzen 5 kept only at the level of Core i5 with varying success. But in the «new» each core itself has changed a lot — and they have become the fastest (of course, in their group — in terms of technical, and not just price parameters). The dependence of the results on the drive is 3%, and different SSDs do fit into the 1% range.
Recall that the overall result of the Core i5 (and other processors without SMT) is anomalous here due to the “bump” of one of the Photoshop tests, but all the rest can be compared. However, their results are simply confirmation that there were no anomalies in the first two groups. As for the influence of drives, we have one of the rare cases when it can be greater than the difference between processors. The fact is that Lightroom and Capture One Pro are actively working with disks in the process of running tests, so in their case, some use is already noticeable from high-speed SSDs. Although in reality it is easier to consider the hard drive as the only obvious outsider, and even then it is not so easy to notice a 10% difference in operating time with the naked eye.
FineReader also «pulls» the disk, and it is that pulls — in small portions. As a result, it is not even the pure speed of the drive that is important to him, but the delays. But the amount of data is still small, so at the very least even hard drives and USB drives manage to do the job; nothing else to say about the rest. As for the processors themselves, we remember that this program loves not only the «quality», but also the «quantity» of cores, as well as the capacity of the cache memory — everything is fine with the new Ryzen. Even if it’s an inexpensive Ryzen 5 3600.
The memory controller in Intel processors was and remains the best, so in equal (or close) conditions, Ryzen still cannot overtake Core. However, if we compare processors of equal price, then they could overtake before, but now they “just” have become even faster. We also once again observe that working with archives with any non-zero compression ratio is a task for the processor, memory, etc. , but not for the drive. Yes, about 10% of the difference between the best and worst cases can make their corrections when testing significantly different systems. However, this will come out only if, for example, we compare two laptops on “close” processors — but one with a hard drive and the other with a solid state drive. But different SSD models (even significantly different ones) with a “normal” internal interface (or even SATA — but still not USB) will not make a big error.
In this group of programs, the old Ryzen 5s looked great, so the new ones «just» got faster. Not essential, but noticeable. But, as usual, the matter did not reach a noticeable influence of the drive on the final result.
In a first approximation: if the Ryzen 5 2600 outperformed the best Core i5 under LGA1151 by 10%, then the Ryzen 5 3600 does exactly the same with the Core i7-8700K — and it was not so long ago the best processor for this platform. As for the accumulators, they do not have a significant impact on the results. Of course, for maximum accuracy when comparing different systems, it is best to use the same SSD, but you can, in principle, any — if only SSD.
Power Consumption and Energy Efficiency
The thin process technology makes the Ryzen 5 3600 also the most economical of today’s four processors. And the difference is significant enough.
And taking into account its performance, the energy efficiency of the processor is excellent. However, after getting acquainted with the Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X, we expected a similar result.
Disk system performance
Well, since we (almost) failed to detect the influence of the drive on speed in applications, it’s time to uncover this group of tests. For the purity of the experiment — only for Ryzen 5 3600 in the same (with one exception) environment.
Processor — processor, disk — disk . When we start copying data, deploying images, etc., the entire load, as has been said more than once, falls on the disk system. Moreover, for all its components, so connecting the same SSD via USB and via SATA gives a one and a half times difference in speed. A USB flash drive, on the other hand, can easily lag behind a hard drive in such operations — although it worked faster in terms of applications. So let’s repeat the banality: speaking of system performance, it is always worthwhile to clearly understand what kind of loads are meant. Depending on this, you should pay attention to specific components. For disk operations, fast disks are needed, in games, the video card comes first, in general-purpose applications, first of all, the processor (often already the video card, but still not always, and the degree of performance increase due to it also depends on the power of the processor). RAM plays a supporting role — it just has to be enough. And the motherboard — just combines all the components. In an ideal PC, all of the above should be ideal. But don’t expect breakthroughs where no one promised them 🙂
Total
In principle, today’s testing was passing: we already knew how the new Ryzens compare with the old ones, so we just wanted to more clearly outline the performance area where they fall. This is what we did. It turned out that at the moment the cheapest and slowest Ryzen 3000 is on average faster than the most expensive and fastest (from mass platform solutions, of course) Core one and a half to two years ago. It makes sense to remember this result — and take it into account when choosing components, if there is a need to purchase something. And the degree of influence of the drive on resource-intensive tasks can be left without comment. By the way, the practical significance of PCIe 4.0 for them is also. Ceteris paribus, you should not refuse PCIe 4.0, but overpaying when assembling a system (especially a budget one) is a dubious idea. However, this also applies to Optane in the mass PC segment — and this is also not a discovery. Of course, Optane are excellent drives, but from the point of view of an individual consumer, they are too expensive, so this very “beauty” does not solve anything. And it is not so, by and large, in demand in this segment of the market.
