About the project

Our service uses a conditional system for evaluating CPU and GPU performance. The performance data for ARM processors was taken from various sources, mainly based on the results of such tests, for example: PassMark, Antutu, GFXBench.

We do not claim absolute accuracy. It is impossible to rank and measure performance with absolute accuracy of ARM processors, for the simple reason that each of them has advantages in some ways, and lags behind other ARM processors in some ways.

Let’s take a look at the Intel Core i9-11900K and AMD Ryzen 7 5800X architecture features that are the heroes of this comparison.

The new i9-11900K is part of the Rocket Lake family of processors whose biggest change is in the cores used, leaving the Skylake cores for the first time, which have been used since the 6th generation of processors released in 2014. Intel continued to release new families of processors, which were mostly limited to minor improvements in the manufacturing process and cores used, but without significant changes in architecture. That this changed for the first time in 2021 was a very relevant fact after so many years.

Intel was also expected to finally phase out the 14nm manufacturing process and move to 10nm, which is years behind schedule. This production process has only reached laptops so far, and they started selling in 2019, so delays in this segment have not been spared. In the case of Rocket Lake and the i9-11900K, we’re still at 14nm, an improved iteration of course, but we’ll have to wait another generation until we see 10nm.

Cypress Cove is a 10nm to 14nm port. In particular, this type of core is essentially the same design as the one used in Ice Lake (10th generation 10nm for laptops), but adapted to 14nm. So these new cores are essentially an adaptation of the 2019 design.

What’s new in Intel Xe

Intel Xe Another very important point to mention is the new integrated graphics, where Intel has included a completely new GPU architecture — Intel Xe. For the first time in many years, we see significant changes in this aspect, after using different generations of Intel HD Graphics and Intel UHD Graphics.

We keep the UHD Graphics nomenclature, in particular the iGPU is the Intel UHD Graphics 750, but it uses the Xe architecture with 32 execution units (EUs). In comparison, the Intel Core i7-1185G7 laptop has 96 EU integrated, so it’s clear that this integrated graphics is still focused on multimedia, and not on games, as it would be the case with AMD APUs. Ryzen 7 5800X: all the power of Zen 3

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X features the Zen 3 architecture, which after Zen+ and Zen 2 is the third improvement over the original Zen.

Zen was launched in early 2017 and was inferior to Intel in everything but the number of cores. But AMD had a weapon that they wielded adeptly: a huge capacity for improvement. The new architecture, created from scratch, had great potential, and all that was needed was to implement all possible improvements to improve it. This materialized in Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000), the first architecture to seriously compete with Intel, but Zen 3 was the main blow.0009

Zen 3 brought with it a significant increase in frequencies, IPC, architecture, improvements in the number of processor instructions, memory controller and efficiency. This puts the Ryzen 5000 processors at or above what Intel offered in the 10th generation.

The ability to outperform the Zen 3 is one of the main goals of the i9-11900K, and that’s where we’ll focus in this comparison.

There are questions that make it clear that Intel is not going to outperform Zen 3 with Rocket Lake-S. This i9The -11900K has 8 cores, while the Ryzen 9 5900X (which the 11900K was supposed to compete with) has 12 cores and the Ryzen 9 5950X has 16 cores.

All this, assuming the same single-core performance, becomes a significant advantage for AMD.

This is where we can best determine the difference in performance between the 4 processors.

RAM Benchmarks

Starting with read and write throughput, the new generation didn’t improve and the results are even in all cases on all 4 processors.

We continue latency tests where there is usually a significant difference, we have very different values, but in which RAM speed has a big impact, so we should focus on the following data:

  • i9-11900K with 3600 RAM gives us 56.50 ns delays. We don’t have a direct comparison to the i9-10900K, but we do have a direct comparison to the 10850K which is very similar, giving 51. 40ns.
  • i9-11900K with default RAM gives 76.40ns, compared to 61.70ns for i9-10900K.
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X achieves 62.20ns with 3600MHz RAM.

Ironically, on this new architecture, RAM memory performs worse in terms of latency. This isn’t terrible news given that the i9-11900K is still outperforming AMD, plus the 5800X has more reliance on RAM speed due to its architecture.

Now we move on to the results of single-core performance in various synthetic benchmarks. Here we expected to see the i9-11900K perform best of the 4 processors we prepared in the benchmark, but we’ll have to check it out.

In Cinebench, the i9-11900K can’t beat the 5800X in the R15 version, while it improves by a small margin in the R20 version. This is a little disappointing as with the new architecture and the 5. 3GHz turbo we were expecting to see clearly better data.

However, we see better results in single-core Wprime: 21.84 test seconds for the Ryzen 7 5800X compared to 20.27 for the i9-11900K (lower is better). It also outperforms the previous generation, which was below the performance of the 5900X.

We continue our multi-core benchmarks where we expect some leveling or improvement based on previous results 11900K compared to 5800X.

In Cinebench R15, the i9-11900K is clearly behind the i9-10900K as well as the 5800X, which extends to the R20 version as well. This is disappointing in terms of differences with Ryzen, as it shows that Intel’s best can’t unequivocally beat AMD’s not-best.

Everything is exactly the same in Blender, while the i9-11900K takes longer to render than the 5800X and 10900K. Even wPrime doesn’t give it a break given Ryzen’s excellent performance.

Finally, let’s move on to the tests of the 3DMark set, the requirements for which are distinguished by a certain universality. Starting with gaming benchmarks like Fire Strike, Time Spy, and VRMark Orange Room, we see poor results in the former (only ahead of 10700K), acceptable in the latter (slightly ahead of the 5800X) and decent in the third (ahead of 10900K with DDR4 3600).

In PCMark, the new version 10 leaves the Ryzen 7 5800X ahead of our protagonist, while in version 8 the victory goes to 11900K.

Now we’re moving on to the gaming performance data that will be decisive in evaluating the capabilities of Intel versus AMD.

We’ll focus on the 1080p data, which is the most interesting from a comparison standpoint as it allows us to see differences between processors more clearly. At higher resolutions, the GPU creates a much more bottleneck. If we add graphical data, we get the following table:

1080P CPU comparison-10900K is a slight advantage in some cases.

Finally, the battle with the Ryzen 7 5800X is fairly even, not giving the i9-11900K enough edge to claim it’s much better at gaming.

We can go further using the relative performance data provided by Techpowerup at 720p, which points to the bottleneck being on the CPU rather than the GPU side.

This test isn’t meant to give you real-world results — we all know you won’t use this processor for 720p gaming — but it’s as close to benchmark as possible.

A couple of years ago it would have been unthinkable to say that about an Intel processor compared to AMD.

Let’s move on to a rather controversial aspect — power consumption and temperatures. Before the release of the i9-11900K, it was warned that its power consumption could be higher than the previous generation, which is a priori alarming, and that this would be a consequence of the transition from 10nm to a less efficient manufacturing process. The CPU TDP itself is a concern, as it is well above 10900K and 5800X.

As far as our analysis goes, the i9-11900K is clearly worse than the other benchmarks. Maximum power consumption under load is 256W, compared to 222W for the 10900K (remember that’s 2 more cores), 197W for the i7-10700K, and 180W for the Ryzen 7 5800X. Obviously, the new i9 does not win here. We remind you that this data is for the complete system.

Temperature is better than i9-10900K, which again is understandable due to the number of cores, but worse than the i7-10700K and Ryzen 7 5800X. The latter gives sensational results.

This is a good time to comment on overclocking, an aspect we still don’t know much about, but which seems to be favorable for the new i9-11900K. In our review, we easily hit 5.1 GHz by hand. Yes, this value is lower than boost, but this is a turbo only for one core and at the peak. It has nothing to do with a constant value on all cores. On the other hand, AMD doesn’t have much manual overclocking capability.

It’s pointless to discuss the performance of these processors without taking into account what prices they are sold at. We will ignore the average price of motherboards as this is a very variable aspect, and in both cases we expect relatively high costs for this component.

At the same time, if we look at the price that we currently find for the i9-11900K, then in stores it is:

This is in stark contrast to the Ryzen 7 5800X, and Intel’s main draw could be the Ryzen 9 5900X, a line-up rival that costs around €670 and is barely out of stock.

But we’ve already seen in this comparison that the 5800X and 11900K are the ones that really compete head-to-head.

Of course, the i9-11900K doesn’t seem like the smartest option given the mere 300 MHz difference to the i7-11700K and its 420 euros, where in this case it’s even cheaper than the Ryzen 7 5800X. In other words, Intel didn’t lose a generation, but i9The -11900K is in a rather difficult position at the moment.

What’s next for LGA1200 and AM4

Finally, we’ll discuss the future of LGA1200 platforms for the i9-11900K and AM4 platforms for the Ryzen 7 5800X. In the end, the ability to upgrade is one of the most important points for users.

Unfortunately, in both cases, the same thing can be said: there will be practically no upgrade opportunities for these platforms, since both Intel and AMD will use the new socket in the next generation. These will be LGA1700 from Intel and AM5 from AMD. This is all due to the introduction of DDR5 memory, which is expected by the end of this year or early next, if there are no unforeseen delays.

In any case, it is also true that in the generation itself, AMD wins, since the i9-11900K is already the top option, while if we had a Ryzen 7 5800X, we could go to Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X, when the time comes.

The truth is that the jump is rather discouraging in the sense of what we already knew beforehand: Intel’s new top-end home generation has 2 fewer cores (8 versus 10 for the i9-10900K), a move that other than technical difficulties does not can be understood. This leaves the new i9-11900K in a decidedly inferior position compared to the old i9-10900K in all multi-core applications, it is clear that in pure single-core applications the 11900K wins, but things are much less clear in combined applications where we tend to see the advantage of 10900K.

When it comes to intensive comparison with the Ryzen 7 5800X, the results show both processors are even in most tests. The conclusion that can be most clearly drawn is that the i9-11900K is unable to beat the Ryzen 7 5800X, a processor that is significantly underpriced as Intel’s price competitor is the Ryzen 9 5900X, which has 4 more cores.
