Simple voltage control rules

The program allows you to adjust the voltage on the master graphics adapter. Depending on its microarchitecture and the chip used, the parameter may be displayed in millivolts or percentage of the original value.

By default, the option is disabled on all devices, except branded ones (from MSI). To activate it, you need to go to the main settings of the application and enable the corresponding option. If after enabling the option it is still inactive (grayed out), refer to the GPU manual. Most likely, Afterburner does not support the programmable microcontroller installed on the device, even if it supports voltage control.

Increase the value of the parameter gradually, by a few percent each time, and closely monitor the temperature and stability of the video card after each change. With a significant increase, the device will overheat faster and make more miscalculations, which will most likely lead to failures in the entire system, the appearance of artifacts, etc.

How to enable monitoring in the game

Before starting testing, you need to enable monitoring in games — show temperature, video card load and FPS counter (called «Frame rate» in the list). In the list of parameters, select the appropriate item and check the box Show in OED.

The next tab defines shortcuts for displaying the monitoring window in games. You can set any, for example, Ctrl + 0.

Some advanced users probably know that in addition to excellent graphics hardware, MSI gaming solutions are equipped with the best GPU overclocking software named afterburner. This application has been bundled with MSI graphics cards for many years. Afterburner is a very good tool for overclocking the GPU core and video memory. For some configurations, Afterburner even allows you to raise the core voltage and increase the power factor limit. Moreover, it is a great tool for detailed monitoring of GPU parameters and status. Afterburner v4.1.0 for the GTX900M series of mobile graphics cards

Afterburner works fine on mobile platforms with some caveats for certain GPUs.

Most of MSI’s gaming series notebooks (with GTX900M and GTX800M graphics cards) run smoothly. The appropriate Afterburner version for overclocking GTX980M, GTX970M, GTX865M and GTX950M mobile graphics cards is v4.1.0.

In this article we will try to overclock GE62 with Intel Core i7 4710HQ processor and GTX9 graphics card65M. The original base frequency of the GPU is 924 MHz; during the game it can rise up to 950 MHz.

Get detailed information about the GPU using GPU-Z. The GTX965M features 5000MHz GDDR5 video memory, which is achieved by a 4x 1250MHz base frequency multiplier. However, if DDR3 is installed, the multiplier will only be 2x. Pay attention to the lower limit of indicators in the «GPU lock» column. This is the default GPU base clock that the core is currently running at. When we change the GPU frequency, the number in this field will change to the one we set. nine0004

How to increase the frequency of the GPU and video memory

Afterburner will hardly raise any questions even in the hands of a novice overclocker. Just follow the steps that we describe in this article, and you will succeed.

When Afterburner starts, the window shown below will open. For overclocking, here you will have only two options available — GPU frequency and video memory frequency. These restrictions are due to the fact that in mobile video cards, changing the core voltage, power factor limit, and fan speed is blocked for the user. Therefore, it remains to be content with only these two parameters. nine0004

The GPU clock speed can be increased by a maximum of 135 MHz, while the memory frequency can be overclocked to 1000 MHz or more. But it should be remembered that with a close approach to the limiting capabilities of the system, it begins to work unstably. Also, it becomes unsafe. Here, just for example, we slightly raised both indicators by 120 MHz. Don’t forget to click the «Apply» button to confirm your changes.

Next, we need to see the actual performance and make sure the system works with the new settings. To do this, we used 3D Mark 11 — the easiest way to observe the difference in performance before and after overclocking. nine0004

We got P7103 points in 5 minutes of testing with standard settings.

Before we run the 3D Mark 11 benchmark again, here’s a trick to save overclocking settings. First you need to change your desired overclocking options. In our case, we raised the GPU and memory clock speeds by 120 MHz and applied the changes. Next, you select Profile 1 and press the Save button to save the settings in this slot. As you can see, 4 slots are available to the user for saving parameters. In the future, all you need to quickly switch your graphics card to one or another overclocking mode is to select one of the saved profiles. nine0004

Now let’s look at the results. When the GPU frequency and video memory were increased by 120 MHz, the system remained stable, and the 3D Mark 11 performance test showed P7728 points. In the DirectX11 3D 3D test in P-Mode, performance increased by more than 8%.

Real changes in games

Let’s start some heavyweight and see the real, applied nature of the changes. Our choice fell on the most popular action movie with tons of upgraded weapons — Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which was recognized as one of the best games in the FPS Games of 2014 rating. With standard graphics card settings, we see a frame rate of 43.4 FPS, which is quite enough for action scenes. nine0004

Now start Afterburner and raise the frequency of the GPU and video memory by 120 MHz. Then we return back to the game and watch the FPS on the same stage. As you can see, the frame rate has increased to 50.1 FPS, which is 15% higher than the standard settings.

Thus, we are convinced that overclocking gives its positive results, increasing system performance. Depending on the configuration and model of the gaming laptop, the overclocking range of its parameters may vary.
