MacBook Pro Specs | Weight, Technical, Release Dates, Prices

The First Generation

This was the first Notebook by Apple which had an Intel-based processor. It was the first laptop that came with the prefix ‘Mac’. It weighed around 5.6 pounds with just a 1-inch thickness and had an aluminum casing. It had several features to boast, such as a Backlit keyboard and MagSafe magnetic power connector. The other features, such as a bright screen, responsive trackpad, and motion sensor, helped it gain a significant market share. It carried a price tag of $1999 for the basic version, whereas the power-packed version for intensive resource utilisers was priced at $2499. Further, in October 2006 and June 2007, Apple updated RAM, Video Card, and some additional features. The price range started from $1099 for the 2.1 GHz, 13-inch white MacBook to $2,799 for the 2.5 GHz, 17-inch MacBook Pro.

The Second Generation

The second generation of MacBook was introduced in October 2008. It had an updated version of Processor as now it boasted an Intel Core2Duo processor, which clocked at 2.4Ghz ($1999 version) and 2.53Ghz ($2499). Some minor changes in the design were brought, such as shifting the ports to the left and optical drives from the front to the right side. One more significant change was the option of toggling between two video cards; Nvidia GeForce 9600 MT and 9400M. The first launch of the MacBook Pro, the second generation, had a 15-inch screen, further updated in 2009, and the 17-inch version was created. Further, in 2010, Intel Core i5 and i7 were introduced in the 15 and 17-inch models, including the latest AMD Radeon 6000 series GPUs.

The Third Generation

The year 2012 marked the entry of the MacBooks with a Retina display. This was a huge boost for Apple enthusiasts, and the new introduction worked like a charm for the people waiting for the next version of the MacBook. Apple’s Phil Schiller introduced the next generation MacBook pro by saying, “It’s thinner than my finger”. Apple had kept the thickness at 0.71 inches by eliminating the laptop’s optical drive, inviting several people’s wrath. The new model included Intel’s Core i7 processors, USB 3.0, and a high-resolution 15.4″ IPS 2880×1800-pixel Retina Display. There were some drawbacks to the new MacBook Retina, such as a soldered memory board which made it un-upgradable, and the lack of Ethernet and Firewire 800 port, among other things.

Apple rolled out several updates to the MacBook Pro, such as increasing the RAM of the high-end 15-inch model to 16 GB, slimming down the chassis of the 13-inch model, and adding support for a 15-inch model for dual-cable output to multiple 5120×2880 displays, and so on. The price range for the MacBook Retina pro started from $2199, which was even more than models with higher specifications.

The Fourth Generation

It was the year 2016, and now was the time to launch another MacBook Pro series. On 27 October, Apple introduced the Touch Bar, a new feature that its already existing users adored. In terms of ports, Apple introduced USB C, with either two or four USB-C (and Thunderbolt) compatible ports on the new MacBook Pro models. There were three variants launched: Basic 13-inch MBP, 13-inch MBP with a touch bar, and the high-end MBP with a touch bar, 2. 6GHz Core i7, 256GB SSD storage, and 16GB RAM. The price range of the three starts from $2199 for the basic 13-inch version to $3499-$4249 for the top-end 15-inch version.

Then in 2017, the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models significantly upgraded their processors and GPU. The price for the MacBook Pro without a touch bar was brought to $1299 for the model with 128GB Memory, and the 256 GB MBP was made available to the general public for $1499.

The Fifth Generation

On November 13, 2019, Apple unveiled the fifth generation 16-inch MacBook Pro, which replaces the previous generation’s 15-inch edition. It has a larger 16-inch 3072×1920 Retina display with a thinner bezel than its predecessor. As a result, it is the biggest MacBook screen so far after the discontinuation of the 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro in 2012. It has a physical Escape key, and a Touch Bar placed above the keyboard, replacing the function keys with a multi-touch-enabled OLED strip. Not only this, it has a separate Touch ID sensor covered with sapphire glass which also acts as a power button. It has a scissor mechanism keyboard with more travel than the previous version’s “Butterfly” keyboard.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro features four Thunderbolt 3 ports with USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 and dual DisplayPort 1.4 signals, increasing performance so that it can run the Pro Display XDR at high resolution, similar to its predecessor. It comes with a 96 W USB-C power adapter that can be used to charge from any port. The included adapter and the Pro Display XDR offer the highest host energy at the time of launch.

Apple unveiled redesigned 13-inch models with the Magic Keyboard on May 4, 2020. The four Thunderbolt port variant includes Ice Lake processing, up to 32 GB of memory, 4 TB of storage, and 6K performance to power the Pro Display XDR and updated graphics. The two Thunderbolt port models accompany the same Coffee Lake processors, storage, memory, and graphics as the 2019 Thunderbolt port models.

The Sixth Generation

On November 10, 2020, Apple released a 13-inch two-port MacBook Pro with a  processor Apple M1 designed by Apple. The first Mac comes in Apple’s new range of custom ARM-based silicon processors. The MacBook Pro has this Apple silicon that keeps the same form factor as the previous version while adding Wi-Fi 6, USB4, and 6K output for use with the Pro Display XDR. The number of external displays allowed was reduced to one from two in the previous-generation Intel-based model. The FaceTime camera is only 720p, but Apple claims to have upgraded the image signal processor for better video quality.

Buying Guide for MacBook Pro

MacBook Pros are high-end machines, and buying one would hurt many’s wallets. So, when determining which Macbook Pro to purchase, keep the following things in mind.

Performance

If you are a power user, creative designer, or video editor, it would be a great time to get the latest 16-inch or 14-inch Macbook Pro powered by the Apple’s M1 chips or the latest 13-inch Macbook Pro, which is powered by an M2 chip. Apple has ditched the intel chips for their future laptops. These chips run on ARM architecture, allowing the company to control the hardware and software to enhance efficiency and performance. However, if you are on a tight budget and can not afford the new Macbook Pros, then buying a refurbished MacBook pro is a great way to reduce the costs yet get a machine with strong performance and efficiency. Techable.com has a vast range of refurbished laptops starting from just $180. Every machine has a 90-day warranty that can be extended up to 3 years.

Size and Form Factor

Again you need to know what you will do with your laptop. If you are constantly moving, then MacBook Pro 14 and 13 inches are a good choice that is light and still are powerhouse machines. However, if you require a bigger screen size and you will be stuck to your chair most of the time and larger screen matters, then 16” laptops are a good choice.

Cost

For the majority of us buying a MacBook Pro, price is an essential factor while making the purchase. So, always understand your needs and what you will do with your laptop once you purchase it. If you are only buying a MacBook pro for internet surfing, making a purchase that would cost an arm and leg does not make sense. Refurbished MacBook Pros ranging from 2010 to 2017 would be a great catch to perform such activities. Similarly, getting a laptop with good specs is important if you want one to employ heavy tasks. That costs money. And if the price is an issue, we suggest you go through our latest deals of refurbished MacBook Pros vetted by our experts. You can choose the MacBook Pro specs per your requirements, which are protected with a warranty giving you peace of mind.

MacBook Air on M2 vs MacBook Pro 14 — Wylsacom

Do you find it easier or more powerful?

Photo: Apple MacBook Air. Source: Unsplash

The new MacBook Air poses a threat not only to devices from the Windows world, but also to Mac-brothers. For the price, it is almost on par with the MacBook Pro 13: the difference is only $100 in favor of the Air. At the same time, Apple also has a MacBook Pro 14: it will be cooler than the thirteen-inch Pro, but at the same time it costs much more: $1199 versus $1999. Should I pay double the price or buy the Air without hesitation?

For Apple laptops and other great devices, contact our friends Biggeek.ru.

Size matters

If you carry your laptop with you every day and don’t want to burden yourself with extra weight, then of course take the new MacBook Air on M2. It only weighs 1.24kg, compared to the Air on the M1 which was slightly heavier at 1.29kg. Next comes the updated MacBook Pro 13 on M2 weighing 1.4 kg. But the MacBook Pro 14 is even more solid — as much as 1.6 kg.

I want beautiful!

There are four colors to choose from for MacBook Air: Silver, Space Grey, Starlight, Midnight. Judging by the first reviews, a laptop in a dark version is quickly covered with prints and looks sloppy, but it’s not up to me to decide what color to buy a computer for.

In the case of the MacBook Pro 14, there are only two colors: Space Gray and Silver, the choice is simple.

Where is the performance more?

If you need the most powerful and mobile MacBook, then of course the MacBook Pro 14 wins. The mighty M1 Max, 32-core graphics, 64 GB of RAM and an 8 TB SSD. Another thing is that the price is simply cosmic — almost $ 6,000 for such a custom assembly, but suddenly someone needs it.

If we start from the way back and see what we get with minimal costs in the basic configuration, then the alignment is as follows.

  • MacBook Air (2020): Apple M1, 8-core processor, 7-core graphics, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for $999.
  • MacBook Air (2022): Apple M2, 8-core processor, 8-core graphics, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for $1199.
  • MacBook Pro 13: Apple M2, 8-core processor, 10-core graphics, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for $1299.
  • MacBook Pro 14: Apple M1 Pro, 8-core processor, 14-core graphics, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD for $1999.

What happens if you upgrade your Apple MacBook Air and try to bring it up to the level of the base MacBook Pro 14? Putting a similar system-on-a-chip will not work with all your desire, but you can get 10-core graphics by paying just $100. Let it be with M2, but let’s pump the system a little more. For $200 we increase the amount of RAM to 16 GB, and we get a 512 GB SSD for another $200. Total: $1199 + $100 + $200 + $200 = $1699.

Here you can stop or continue to feast, increase the SSD to 1 TB for another $ 200, for example. But here the question is whether you need it, after all, a laptop for $ 1200 and for $ 1700 are two big differences, and it still won’t be able to catch up with the MacBook Pro 14 in terms of Air performance on the M2. For those who are interested, you can look at the material with tests of all current Apple chipsets from M1 to M1 Ultra, which was made in AppleInsider. As an example, I will give one screenshot, where it is clearly seen that the M2 is closer in performance to the M1 than to the M1 Pro.

And remember that the initial configurations of both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro 13 come with relatively slow SSDs, and the maximum speed is revealed on versions from 512 GB and higher. This is how Apple is not very elegant, but still forces more or less demanding users to spend a couple of hundred bucks more and buy expensive equipment. It’s funny, but in the MacBook Air on the M1 there was no such damn thing.

Blogger proves 256GB M2 MacBook Pro performs worse than M1 version

However, even the maximum pumping will not save the Air: it will still be noticeably weaker than the 14 Pro with its Apple M1 Pro in those tasks where multiple cores are involved. If the M2 is the solution for those who want a lightweight, long-lasting laptop without coolers or overheating, then the M1 Pro is all about performance. And if this is not enough, then the MacBook Pro 14 can also be with an even more powerful M1 Max, which will be appreciated by those who work with video or graphics, speeding up the processing process. And saving time results in additional opportunities to earn money.

Air adapter

Like the MacBook Pro 14, the new MacBook Air has a MagSafe connector for connecting the charger. But he has fewer USB ports: not three, but only two. Not critical, but some points will be appreciated only by professionals. For example, if Air can work with one external monitor, then up to four screens can be connected to Pro 14 using its Thunderbolt 4 ports. Plus, Pro 14 has HDMI and an SD slot, but Air is deprived of them — to connect a memory card, you need adapter.

Excellent vs. good screen

At first glance, there are many similarities between laptops: the diagonals do not differ very much. If the Pro has 14.2 inches, then the new Air has a display that has grown to 13. 6 inches. This is 0.3 inches more than the previous generation model. At the same time, the frames have become a little thinner, and now there are smooth contours in the corners, beautifully.

Like the older model, the Air has a «monobrow» — a controversial design decision, but not for me to judge Apple for this. Even relatively old Air on M1 increased the margin of brightness from 400 to 500 nits. So against the background of the Air, the progress is obvious, but we are comparing it with the MacBook Pro 14. And there mini-LED and 120 Hz are not yet available for the base Air.

And it’s worth adding that the new Air finally has a 1080p camera — it’s on par with the older Pro.

Loud, clear sound

Good speaker sound has always been a hallmark of Apple laptops, and the new Air is no exception. Unlike the previous generation model, it received not two, but four speakers. However, the MacBook Pro 14 sounds even better: in principle, few people are able to outdo its six-speaker acoustics. In addition, the new Air and Pro 14 have support for high-impedance wired headphones, which the 2020 Air did not have.

Miscellaneous chargers

Oddly enough, different versions of MacBook come with different power adapters. The simplest Air on the M2 comes with a 30W charger. If you choose a slightly more powerful model, then a new 35W charger comes with it. It is a little more powerful, and also received two USB-C connectors, that is, you can charge another device simultaneously with a laptop. This block is not very useful: you can easily find a compact adapter with more outstanding results. Let’s say three or four connectors and a power of 100 watts.

A similar story with the MacBook Pro 14: the base charger is 67 W, while older models already have 96 W. And do not forget that such an adapter decently weighs if you regularly take it with you.

The larger size of the MacBook Pro 14 compared to the Air can also be explained by the more capacious battery: it is 70 Wh, while the Air on the M2 has 52. 6 Wh. Although the autonomy indicators are better for Air. It, like the 2020 model, can withstand up to 15 hours in the browser, but the Pro 14 has only 11 hours.

Or maybe the old Air?

In my opinion, the MacBook Air on the M1 was just perfect at the time of release, and to this day has not lost its relevance. It’s lightweight, lasts a long time, and the M1’s system-on-a-chip performance is enough for all my tasks. It justifies and fulfills its price of $999.

Compared to the Air on the M2, it is slightly heavier and thicker, but the difference is not critical. But it has a normal, not a brake SSD in the basic configuration, it is $ 200 cheaper than a new one, and the performance difference between the M1 and M2 is not so critical. As tests show, the difference is about 10-15%, but for serious tasks like editing video in 8K or processing RAW from medium format cameras, the capabilities of the M1 and M2 are not enough, here give at least M1 Pro or something more powerful.

I am typing this text on my MacBook Air, which I bought last summer. Bought, put and practically did not use until this summer. In the studio, I have a far from new, but perfectly working iMac, and at home I have an MBP 16″ 2019.

The spare laptop turned out to be a great device: it works for a long time, even with the maximum brightness level, it can withstand about 8-9 hours of work on the street. I say this to the fact that think about how you plan to use the laptop. I thought about buying a MacBook Pro 14 for new experiences, but I felt it and got sick of it. It is heavy, lazy to carry it with you. Screen 120Hz? Thank you, but in terms of autonomy it is inferior to Air, it works 1.5 times less, and the increased smoothness of the picture is not as important to me as confidence in a long-lasting battery. Spare power? And I don’t have any particularly demanding tasks. So for people like me, the basic Air on M1, M2 or future M3 or M4 will be the perfect device.

Strange MacBook Pro 13 on M2

This is a strange model. On the one hand, it has a new filling, an active cooling system, but at the same time an old design, and in terms of performance it somehow looks pale compared to the MacBook Pro 14. It is heavier than the new Air, but boasts a Touch Bar — it no longer fashionable, but still effective.

According to Apple, the laptop lasts a little longer than the Air, it has a more powerful charger in the box, but it’s still the same old FaceTime camera, and only two speakers. Now, if it was on the M1 Pro, it would turn out to be a powerful and relatively cheap alternative for the MacBook Pro 14. And so it turns out something strange and I can’t attribute it to real candidates for purchase.

It’s hard to give an unambiguous conclusion, because if you compare Air on M2 and MacBook Pro 14, then completely different users emerge. While the former need a mobile laptop with excellent battery life and quiet operation, the latter require a full range of ports, maximum performance and power headroom for the future. This is a powerful work machine for those who know how to get the most out of this potential.

As for the MacBook Air, it is a universal device where we get everything at once at an adequate price. Excellent autonomy and compact dimensions are the trump cards of the new Apple laptop. And, as usual, there will be competition between the Air on the M1 and M2: the former costs less, but the latter sports a new design and numerous improvements against the background of the old model.

Reviewers note the complete redesign of the MacBook Air. In particular, Apple has abandoned the traditional wedge-shaped case, and now the laptop looks like a 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021. Visually, it looks a little thicker, but in fact, on the contrary, it is thinner than its predecessor. The MacBook Air 2022 measures 30.41 x 21.5 x 1.13 cm and weighs 1.24 kg. The dimensions of the 2020 model were 30.41×21.24×0.41-1.61 cm, and the weight reached 1.29kg.

The MacBook Air 2022 has revived MagSafe magnetic charging. Reviewers noted that this frees up an additional USB-C connector for connecting other devices. The laptop has two USB-C ports on the left side of the case, which is a minus since heavy users will have to use a USB hub.

The keyboard on the MacBook Air is the same as the 14-inch MacBook Pro, with a functional top row and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. There is no Touch Bar. The Verge noted the convenience of the keyboard and less noise compared to the «butterfly». The trackpad has become a little wider.

The 2022 MacBook Air has two tweeters and two woofers with Apple Spatial Audio. Reviewers noted that the sound became richer, especially at full volume. There are no speaker grilles, they are integrated between the keyboard and display.

The laptop also received an updated 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2560×1664 pixels, brightness up to 500 nits, support for P3 wide color gamut and True Tone technology. It does not support ProMotion for smoother scrolling.

The display has been reduced bezels compared to its predecessor and added a notch, similar to the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro. This was called a disadvantage of the laptop, as the frame covers part of the menu in applications. The problem is solved by installing a third-party utility like Bartender.

The 2022 MacBook Air has a built-in 1080p camera that shoots much better than the 720p module of its predecessors.

The Apple M2 processor is 18% faster than the M1 in multi-core mode and 35% faster in graphics processing, according to official specifications. Benchmarks confirmed the superiority of the new chip, but the difference is not always significant.

Laptop slows down in Cinebench 23 30-minute multi-core test. The improved graphics of the Air M2 scores better than the Air M1 in games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but not as good as the Pro M2. At the same time, the MacBook Air 2022 is noticeably slower than the MacBook Pro with an M2 processor and a more efficient cooling system. During synthetic tests, the bottom of the MacBook Air got very hot, so the laptop is not suitable for constant heavy loads.

The base MacBook Air has 256 GB of single-NAND storage, the same as the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro M2. More expensive laptop models have two NAND chips, and the data transfer rate is higher. Apple noted: “The new systems use higher-density NAND memory, which provides 256 GB of memory using a single chip. The performance of these M2-based systems for real-world applications is even higher.” The authors of the Max Tech YouTube channel conducted tests. They showed the following results: MacBook Pro on M1 — 2900 MB/s (read speed) and 2215 MB/s (write speed) MacBook Pro on M2 is 1446 MB/s (read speed) and 1463 MB/s (write speed).

Notebook battery life is 8-10 hours in standard mode with an average display brightness of 200 nits. Engadget noted that with moderate use, the computer was able to work for 16 hours and 30 minutes. TechCrunch said the device lasted over 17 hours of video playback from Apple TV+ at 50 nits. The Verge tested 4K video export on laptops in Premiere Pro and noticed a significant performance regression. The Air M2 took the same amount of time to export video as the Air M1, but both are significantly slower than the Air M1 in Premiere Pro 15.
