Core i7-4790K vs Core i3-12100F – what is the fastest processor of 2014 capable of in games after 8 years? It was assumed that the core i7-4770K, which had fallen in price, would become the heart, but after a whole month of torment, it was decided to abandon such an expensive idea. I had to wait more than a year, but in this case it does not matter. The bottom line is that at the same time, an even more productive stone went on sale, which was literally overwhelmed with power. Times when Intel released the Core i7-4790K, today are considered one of the best in history, because prices were low, and greed has not yet overshadowed all the feelings of the company’s management.

Sometimes our readers write that they have just such a stone at home, assuring everyone else that the potential of the processor is so huge that today there is no need to update anything at all.

Well, too much time has passed since then, so we can’t even imagine if this processor is still relevant, or some of our readers are a little cunning. Since it is extremely difficult to understand the issue, we decided to study the tests conducted by the Testing Games team. Bloggers took the old flagship from 2014 and compared it with the most budget representative of the Alder Lake line — Core i3-12100F. The GeForce RTX 3080 was used as a video card. Recall, Core i7-4790K had 4 cores and could be overclocked up to 4.4 GHz. At the same time, the Core i3-12100F, released 8 years later, lacks multithreading and accelerates to 4.3 GHz, but has a much more efficient architecture and a 10-nm process technology. Let’s look at the table and draw conclusions.

As you can see, all the words about the relevance of the Core i7-4790K in 2022 are nothing more than an attempt to persuade ourselves. In fact, the old flagship is no longer relevant and can only be used as an undemanding system for the Internet or study. We agree that in the case of overclocking, the performance can increase by 15-20%, but this will not solve the problem of a critical lag behind the budget stone of 2022. If you have something like this on hand, then we strongly recommend that you do not invest in an expensive video card. In this case, the performance loss will be critical.

As for the Core i3-12100F, it proves one simple fact: despite all the criticism, Intel does not stop progress. Perhaps we would like to see more serious results, and instead of the same four cores, at least 40, but so far we have to admit that engineers are not capable of going beyond the laws of physics. The transition to more advanced technological processes in 8 years allowed buyers of a budget stone to bypass those who spent incredible amounts on a flagship in 2014. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the author of this material decided to stop buying expensive processors and motherboards once and for all. Instead, it’s easier to update this kit every 2 years, getting a nice boost without having to change the entire system.

Intel Core i7-4790K Processor Overview

Intel Core i7-4790K base clock speed is 4 GHz, auto-boost is 4400 MHz. Not bad, agree?

Very little time left before the release of new eight-core processors from Intel called Haswell-E, based on the Intel X9 chipset9. However, even before the release, Intel knows how to surprise a multi-million audience of users around the world (although the giant’s main focus is still focused on corporate clients).

This summer will be remembered for the appearance of two central processors (but actually there are three of them, there is also an incredibly budget unlocked dual-core Intel Pentium G3258) codenamed Devil’s Canyon (today’s guest and Intel Core i5-4690K). And it is this couple0034 stones is currently the same fresh , which can be installed in the LGA 1150 socket and Intel Z87 chipsets, as well as the recently released Intel Z97.

In fairness, we note that such a powerful processor is not required for modern games, an Intel Core i5 operating at 3500-4000 MHz is enough.

In this review, we will talk about the top quad-core processor for this socket — Intel Core i7-4790K, a kind of successor to the Intel Core i7-4770K. There are no architectural innovations as such, it is still the same 22 nm Haswell, with four active cores and eight computing threads. The unlocked multiplier, as indicated by the “K” suffix in the name, allows you to conquer unprecedented overclocking frequencies, but we hasten to assure you that it is unlikely that you will be able to achieve even more impressive results compared to the nominal, because the base clock frequency of the Intel Core i7-4790K is 4GHz , in auto boost mode is 4400MHz . Not bad, agree?

In such a situation, it is rather difficult to find an adequate reason for an even greater increase in frequency. The amount of cache in this gem is 8 MB . The TDP level is at 88W . However, this is a somewhat average indicator, because at 4.4 GHz the heat dissipation increases to 102 watts. And this value is at the standard voltage, which the manufacturer had to increase above 1.3 V . In idle (2D mode), the Intel Core i7-4790K generates 20 W heat. At the nominal frequency, the temperature of the Intel Core i7-4790K sometimes reached 74 Degrees . However, we used a Deepcool cooler with only 95W of power dissipation. We admit that it may not be enough for constant peak loads.

After increasing the multiplier by several values, and also the voltage to 1.380 V, we managed to start the Intel Core i7-4790K and at 4600 MHz.

Integrated graphics core former Intel HD Graphics 4600 , with support for three graphic displays. The maximum graphics clock speed is 1250 MHz . This video card is not suitable for anything other than for watching high-definition video and normal displaying an image on the display. Although at low resolution and medium picture quality settings we managed to achieve an acceptable frame / s in the game Tomb Raider, another thing is that the picture quality absolutely did not correspond to the level of 2013-2014.

To test the Intel Core i7-4790K, we used an ASUS Z97-WS motherboard and Kingston HyperX 10th Anniversary Edition (KHX24C11X3K4/16X) RAM, which ran at 2133 MHz.

This motherboard allows you to squeeze a lot out of any processor, but, as mentioned above, Intel engineers have already fired up the monitored processor to the very limit. Still, 4400 MHz is not a joke. Neither for everyday needs, nor for gaming applications, so many megahertz are needed.

After increasing the multiplier by several values, as well as the voltage to 1. 380 V , we managed to run the Intel Core i7-4790K and at 4600 MHz , however, for complete stability and in order to prevent overheating, we dropped to pass the tests up to 4.5 GHz.

The already incredible performance of the Intel Core i7-4790K in the nominal mode has increased even more. In fairness, we note that such a powerful processor is not required for modern games; an Intel Core i5 operating at 3500-4000 MHz is enough. But for rendering, professional graphics, architectural and design calculations, Intel Core i7-4790K will do just fine.

So far we haven’t been able to find Intel Core i7-4790K in our retail, but it is known that the recommended price for this stone will be around 350$ . And in our opinion, this is a more appropriate candidate for installation in a system compared to the second in the Intel Core i7-4770K line, which has become . After all, today’s new product, with an equal selling price, has a nominal frequency of 4400 MHz, and the Intel Core i7-4770K still needs to be configured to work in this mode (although this will not be difficult for computer hardware lovers).
