At present, each consumer of computer technology is looking for something unique that best meets all his requirements. In this article, we want to offer you an overview of the unique Nine Hundred case in the Gamer modification from Antec, which has a specific target audience. To better understand its features, we will look into all the hidden places and find out what the manufacturer hides from the eyes of the consumer and what unique features this case has. You can also compare the ventilation quality in it with other cases and finally decide whether it is suitable for your gaming platform. But first, a few words about the manufacturer.

Antec was founded back in 1986, at the dawn of the computer boom. The company is headquartered in Fremont, California, but has an additional office in the Netherlands (Europe). Antec products can be found in more than 25 countries. The main activities of this company are: cases, power supplies, media components, fans and various accessories. The main features of the products were quality and high performance, but the style and appearance remained extremely conservative. However, one of the offers of this company is building Antec Gamer Nine Hundred stands out from the crowd in design and should be uncompromising in comfort and ventilation efficiency.

Packaging

The Antec Nine Hundred case is packed in a cardboard box without cutouts for transportation, which is not very convenient, considering the dimensions. The packaging design is made in black and gray colors, with the image of the case on one of the sides.

The second side shows the specification of the housing with a picture of its parts. Below is information on transportation methods and much more that will be more useful to carriers.

The manufacturer has placed additional information on the front side of the package. All inscriptions are made in different languages, but there are no Russian and Ukrainian languages. For a consumer who does not speak English, German or French, it will be somewhat difficult to read the inscriptions without using a dictionary or translator.

Exterior

The front panel of the Antec Nine Hundred case is made of black metal mesh to improve ventilation, which is divided into blanks for 5.25-inch bays. All of it is limited by a black ledge that protects the mesh plugs.

Behind the metal mesh at the bottom of the front panel are two 120 mm fans with a built-in speed controller. Also, these fans are equipped with blue illumination.

On the connector panel, which is located on top, which is not always convenient, there are Reset and Power buttons with blue backlighting: a small Reset on the left, and Power on the right. Between them, the manufacturer placed connectors: Audio-out and microphone jack, 1x IEEE 1394 (FireWire, i.Link) and 2x USB 2.0. Behind the connector panel there is a “pocket” for various small gadgets: an mp3 player, a digital camera, flash drives, etc. At the bottom of this “pocket” lies a rubber mat, on which you can put small connected devices and not worry that they can slip off the surface .

In the upper part of the case, in addition to the «pocket» and the connector panel, there is a «highlight» of Antec Nine Hundred — a 200 mm fan to ensure maximum ventilation inside the case, which also has a speed control.

On the back side of the case there is a hole for the motherboard interface panel and 7 expansion slots, and under them the manufacturer placed a hole for the power supply. The Antec Nine Hundred also has holes for liquid cooling pipes, which are located next to the expansion slots.

The entire cabinet rests on small rubber feet that keep the cabinet stable on all surfaces and reduce noise and vibration.

Most of the side panel of the case is made of transparent plastic. The plastic itself is held on fasteners in the form of rivets. The place for a possible installation of a 120 mm fan, which will improve the cooling of devices in the expansion slots, is allocated in a separate area, which is separated from the transparent plastic and covered with a grill.

The fan on the side wall is very tightly fixed with transparent latches without any screws.

Here, a fan in a transparent case with backlight would look very stylish, although the Nanoxia DX12 with a black case and an acid-green impeller fits in quite harmoniously.

Complete set and internal structure

We found an additional complete set in the case itself.

Antec Nine Hundred hull package includes:

  • assembly instructions;
  • package with fixing bolts;
  • 5.25″ to 3.5″ bay adapter;
  • 3.5-inch output plug;
  • support bracket for long graphics cards;
  • rubber mat.

It’s worth noting that these cases do not come with a power supply, leaving the choice of this component to the owner, allowing you to use exactly what best suits your needs.

If you plan to use one of the latest long graphic cards, we recommend that you install the optional support bracket that comes with the case.

As soon as we looked under the side cover, the mount on the basket for a 120 mm fan immediately caught my eye, which is designed to cool 3.5-inch devices and improve ventilation in the area where expansion cards are installed. The entire chassis of the Antec Nine Hundred case is made of 0.8 mm thick steel. Almost all wires are twisted with reusable ties, which will simplify disassembly and assembly of the case.

A pre-installed 120 mm fan is visible on the rear wall, and a large 200 mm fan is located at the top. Both of these fans are designed to accelerate the removal of heated air from the case.

The Antec Nine Hundred PSU is bottom mounted, which immediately requires models with long enough cables to not only reach the motherboard and storage connectors at the top, but also be ergonomically stowable. In addition, the power supply is supposed to be installed with the fan up, because there is no grille for air intake in the bottom of the case. With this position of the power supply, the owner will need to be more careful during assembly and / or upgrades of the system so that a dropped screw does not accidentally fall into the power supply or a dangling cable does not wrap around the fan if the grid cells are large. But there is also a nice feature — the power supply is installed on silicone gaskets, which reduces noise.

The entire rack for 5. 25″ devices and drives is located along the entire length of the case, which will be very convenient, providing freedom of installation. The manufacturer divided the entire rack into 3 parts.

The bottom two sections are occupied by 3.5″ cradles that can be removed or moved higher to free up space for 5.25″ devices or allow longer expansion cards to be more easily installed.

The top of the rack is designed for 5.25″ devices by default, although a 3.5″ wide device basket can be installed here if desired or required.

Both «baskets» are fixed with four screws on each side, so removing them is not entirely easy, since you have to unscrew the eight screws and remove both side panels first.

The entire basket slides forward along with the device inserts, which is quite convenient, especially if you need to replace or add a hard drive to an already assembled system.

To improve the cooling of hard drives, a 120 mm fan is screwed to each basket, which are visible from the front panel. The manufacturer decided to do without dust filters, which improves the appearance, but contributes to the accumulation of dust inside the system unit.

To install hard drives, you will need to remove the «basket» completely. To reduce vibration, there are plastic inserts inside the «basket» case, through which the drives are screwed.

Another very important feature worth noting is that the 5.25” bay blanks on the front panel are fixed with screws, which provides a more secure fastening, but in case of installing devices, it will require the removal of both side panels.

All connectors used to connect the front panel are made in a standard style: buttons and indicators are semi-separate, while Audio, USB and FireWire are solid. It is pleasant to note that the front audio panel allows you to connect both new and old motherboards, supporting AC’97 and HD Audio.

Cooling system

As already noted, all pre-installed fans are equipped with three-position speed controls. Moreover, these controllers are located inside the case on wires from each fan, which does not provide them with high ergonomics of use. However, they allow you to choose the optimal ratio of ventilation efficiency and noise.

The 120x25mm 3-speed fan has a nominal operating voltage of 12V but can be changed using the switches as follows:

Antec Nine Hundred Two — flaws in a perfect body

This material was written by a site visitor and has been rewarded.

For a long time I wanted to change my old box, but no new items touched my soul for any money. And just before the new year, I took the power supply and covered myself, in order to pull it out, I had to remove the motherboard, and I realized: the moment has come, the new case needs to be taken now. On the one hand, the case is just a box where components are shoved. It would seem that the main thing is to look cool. But it’s not so simple.

Here is a small list of features that I think a proper case should have:

— Minimum dimensions without sacrificing capacity. Everything that is needed should fit in, but no more. The case must be in MidiTower format. Surely this statement will cause a wave of protest, but personally I am deeply convinced of this. Monsters aka Fulltower are more suitable for servers with a dozen hard drives. A dozen hard drives are usually needed for a collection of movies, music, and any kind of warez (by the way, think about whether big hard drives are needed if everyone had only licensed everything?). It is extremely rare that someone sits on such collections as Tsar Koschey — they are distributed on the local network, torrents, they are used from laptops, from computers of parents, media streamers or being away from home via the Internet. In general, it turns out a typical file server. Ideally, such a machine should work 24/7, which means it should be quiet and economical. Powerful processors and video cards do not fit into this model in any way, so a separate computer is allocated for the file server and optimized according to completely different criteria. In the main (gaming) computers based on Fulltower, empty spaces are formed for a third of the volume, the mental elimination of which does not affect the functionality in any way, but it happens that in general a motherboard with a high-end video card and a top-end cooler look somehow pathetic in such a huge cabinet — this is just waste of money and room space. In addition, if manufacturers make a case for a file server, and for a gaming computer, and for a home theater, so that it can work with the CBO, and in a passive way, and blown with a bang and be silent at the same time — trying to please everyone means draining everywhere. I’m trying to make a choice of a gaming case, gamers need the most powerful CPUs, the most powerful video cards and a couple of the fastest drives, only air cooling is supposed to be powerful enough, but not roaring louder than other components, the task of sleeping with the case is not set — for all this MidiTower is quite enough.

— The case should not be flimsy, more or less thick steel is needed. Foam / felt insulation on the inner walls is welcome, although not required.

— There is no question of any cuts from sharp edges and breaking out of plugs with a can opener.

— Front must be 5.25″ bays from top to bottom and have a movable HDD cage.

— Absolutely any video cards, present and future, should fit. The implementation of the previous paragraph allows you to do this without an unnecessary increase in the depth of the hull.

— Of course, the case must be wide enough so that there are no problems with installing large coolers.

— Even tricky mounts in 5.25″ bays do not negate the standard 8 screw holes. This is critical for mounting fan controllers and other devices with shallow depth.

— Same goes for expansion card mounts — latches should not override screws.

— Adequate ventilation. Ideally, the hottest components (CPU and graphics cards) should be supplied with fresh air, not heated by someone else. Hot air must be removed from the housing as quickly as possible. Also, there should be no unnecessary obstacles in the way of air flows: the blowing fans should be closed only with dust filters — no fashionable plastic moldings, the rear ones should be closed not with stamped holes in the monolithic wall of the case, but with a wire grill. Ideally, the temperatures of all components should be lower than on an open bench.

— Sufficient cooling of all hard drives.

— It is desirable to have a system for damping the vibration of the discs, while it should not go into minus the strength of the structure. Ideally, the drive system, fan, dust filter, and bezels should be easily separated from each other so as not to create unnecessary difficulties when replacing one of the elements.

— The installation of the PSU should not be hindered by anything (goodbye, my Ascot 6AR2). The disks should also install without problems. Either across the body through the side, or along the body through the front or removable basket.

— All fans are at least 120mm. I hope I don’t need to explain that, in general, a larger diameter fan creates the same airflow at a lower noise level.

— A minimum of non-standard fans that are unlikely to be replaced in the future. Example: Modification of Pro AeroCool cases with their 400mm prop on the side cover.

— Dust filters. All blowers should have filters that are easy to clean.

— The previous paragraph imposes a restriction on the location of the power supply: the newfangled scheme, when the PSU sucks air directly from the floor, is unacceptable.

— USB and headphone sockets on the front panel must be located in adequate places. Most often this is true, but some especially «talented» designers still manage to screw it up. The presence of a front cover that covers all the compartments is rather a minus, although there were some successful implementations (the Thermaltake M9D has a cover that acts as an additional air filter).

— Underpressure must not be created in the case: if the intake flow is weaker than the exhaust one, the difference will be sucked through all the slots (lid gaps, PCI plugs, optical drive) and clog them with dust.

— No extra holes. Fully passive cooling is another story. In normal life, air exchange must be controlled through fans. Due to the additional perforation, the air usually begins to race in a circle through a nearby fan. The perforation on the top of the case is an additional source of dust when the system is turned off (hello Thermaltake Armor). With reduced pressure in the case, any holes are evil.

Oddly enough, there are no cases that satisfy all the points, although I did not even make claims to the exterior. But it was necessary to make a concrete decision here and now. The choice fell on Antec Nine Hundred Two.

I recommend everyone to read the laboratory article
His Air: review and testing of the Antec Nine Hundred hull and
Faster, higher, stronger! Antec Twelve Hundred case review, plus
specifications on the official website of the manufacturer. In short, the second version of the 900 doesn’t bear much resemblance to the first, it’s more like a 1200, having lost one 120mm fan in the back and 3 5. 25″ bays along with a hard drive basket in the front. But it’s too early to put an end to it, I would like to dwell on the features , which were not covered in the above articles, to try to compare Nine Hundred Two, Nine Hundred and Twelve Hundred among themselves, and also to find out if the case suits my requirements.

So, here it is, nine hundred and two:

Antec Nine Hundred Two — appearance

Really very similar to the Twelve Hundred, reduced in height. The only difference is that the protruding part of the top 200mm fan in Nine Hundred Two is wrapped in plastic, while in
Twelve Hundred she was covered in mesh. I like monolithic plastic more.

Top
Nine Hundred of the first version was done in a completely different way. Perhaps someone liked the trash tray and the recessed propeller … a matter of taste.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — front top

Twelve Hundred. From left to right, the Reset button, two USB connectors, eSATA, a dot that looks like a hole in a CD drive, into which a paperclip is usually put for emergency ejection of a disc, this is actually a disk activity indicator (blinks blue), two headphone and microphone jacks ( only a real overclocker can accurately determine which one is which) and the Power button.

Old
The Nine Hundred panel was less well placed, but featured a FireWire connector and color-coded audio outputs.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — top fan

Top fan exactly the same as
Twelve Hundred. The same 200mm in diameter, the same stamped grille (thanks at least for the large cells), the same lack of filters. In general, filters are never installed on the blowing fan, but the top fan is special. When the computer is turned off, reality will be deposited inside the case. There will be much less of it than with active suction, and if the computer is on all the time, it will not be at all, but still I would prefer to have a filter there.

Fan
Nine Hundred was designed slightly differently, but I have already mentioned this above. There are no other differences.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — front

Just like I wanted, the front is a series of five inch bays. Something special about
Twelve Hundred is hard to say. All the same hexagonal honeycombs.

A c
The Nine Hundred holes were round and twice as small — a much more serious obstacle to the airflow.

Antec Nine Hundred Two End Caps

There are three empty bays left in all three housings. The plug of one of them is full of holes, the other two are covered with hard windproof foam rubber. I think it is assumed that the leaky one goes to eternal rest after the installation of the optical drive, others prevent uncontrolled air circulation.

Included with the case is another plug with a cutout for a 3. 5 «device (card reader / drive) + a basket for mounting it in a five-inch bay, but I won’t take pictures — this is in the articles of the laboratory)

Antec Nine Hundred Two — rear

And this is what the back of the case looks like. I apologize for the photo, I forgot to take a picture of this angle in time, so I demonstrate the view of the already assembled system. The bottom line is, the ass looks about the same as
Twelve Hundred minus one fan. An important feature — no more dubious perforations around the holes for the CBO hoses! You can also notice that PCI plugs are placed closer to the power supply — the manufacturer has abandoned the perversion in the form of its own form factor for the PSU (I hope, forever).

By the way,
Nine Hundred had no issues with the installation of the PSU, and not very necessary holes for ventilation, and the holes for the hoses were already in place.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — insides

Twelve Hundred. Minus three 5.25″ bays and minus one basket. I already spoke about the rear fan and the PSU.

Nine Hundred was not black on the inside and had no holes for CBO hoses. But it had normal holes for mounting 5.25 «devices — five pieces for the two lower screws and two strips for arbitrary mounting of the upper ones. The feasibility of the invention, implemented in
Twelve Hundred, when the holes are offset relative to each other, is very doubtful.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — Rear and Top Fan Controller

The back of the case has a rear and top fan control panel. Exactly like the
Twelve Hundred if not for the missing switch for the missing second rear fan. The panel allows you to adjust the speed of rotation of two fans, as well as turn off the backlight of the top one. All comments about noise in the lab article are absolutely accurate. At minimum speed, the fans are almost silent and still create sufficient airflow. At medium speeds, the system is clearly audible and blows very strongly. At high stands a specific howl, the air flow is just huge. I advise you to leave everything at a minimum.

And in Nine Hundred there is no such panel at all.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — fans and controller from the inside

This is what this design looks like inside the case. You can see that the power is connected directly to the fans, plus there are wires from the fans to the control panel. These wires are mounted rigidly, so that the dismantling of native propellers is possible only with the help of wire cutters, and after installing other models, the socket will remain out of work. It’s a pity.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — side cap
Side cap similar to
Nine Hundred, but the latter did not have a dust filter. The new product, like Twelve Hundred, has such a filter.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — filter on the side cover

The filter slides out easily and is easy to clean, although I would like to do otherwise.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — side cover filter large

I’m used to the filter being bluntly vacuumed from the outside. This is easy to do if the filter is located immediately behind the grate, but in this case, it is still about 5 mm before it. Not sure if it will work, but time will tell.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — open right side
The right side is nothing special, only pre-installed reusable cable ties pleased.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — Disc Cage

Disc Cage one to one as in
Twelve Hundred. For comparison, at
The Nine Hundred did not have a fan speed control, which is visible in this photo in the lower right corner, and there was no dust filter.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — drive cage filter

Next I was going to criticize the cage for being a one piece unit that includes the drive cage itself, fan, filter and plugs. If someone read my requirements, I would like to see all these components separate.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — disc basket on the side

But a good friend
Khanyga suggested that the basket can be opened easily, just press a couple of latches.

The fan can be easily accessed this way. Another feature is that the front of the basket can be attached separately, thus freeing up space for extra long graphics cards. For this, special holes are made in the body.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — fan, filter and plug mount without basket

, especially considering that you need to clean the filters regularly. Of course, you can fix everything with one screw, but this is not entirely good. If the basket with hards is fixed only on one side, it can rattle.

But by the way, how did the filter become in just a week of use not around the clock:

Filter clogged with dust

Vacuuming the basket from the front is even more difficult than the side cover — there is a decent distance between the front grill and the filter. Not very good, but not deadly.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — complete system, internals
This is what a complete system looks like. I didn’t lay the cables very carefully, because. computer configuration changes too often
By the way, the distance from the PCI plugs to the disk cage is 30cm. If you want to install a hard drive right in front of the video card, keep in mind that the drive protrudes from the basket by about 3 cm, and another ~ 2 cm should be left for cables going to the hard drive. With the basket removed, from the plugs to the front fan, as much as 42 cm — enough for anything.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — the fan latch on the side cover rests against the cooler stands out, and the latch of the additional fan on the side cover is quite long, and the problem with installing the cooler is very relevant.
Kaa in overview
Twelve Hundred said «shouldn’t get in the way», but the trick is that Twelve Hundred is taller, judging by
photo, in it the side fan is located slightly lower relative to the motherboard and the processor cooler. And in my case, the latch rests on the IFX-14 cooler and the side cover does not close.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — side cover won’t close

Tritely taking the case by the sides, you can break the cooler fasteners. Slightly sad, I took the time-tested wire cutters.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — cutting the latch on the side cover

There is no place for the fan, so it was decided to assemble everything as it is. In general, it’s nonsense that a new case at a price of almost $ 200 needs to be immediately corrected with wire cutters.

Antec Nine Hundred Two — complete system, exterior
This is what the complete system looks like. It seems to be good. It remains to check the last thing, namely the pressure inside the case. There is an assumption that two 120mm fans will not feed a 120mm blower on the back wall, a 140mm (even slow) propeller in the PSU and a 200mm monster on top.

(click on the picture to enlarge)
Antec Nine Hundred Two — low case pressure
It is. Air is drawn in through perforated PCI plugs. This is bad. Perhaps a fan on the side wall would restore balance, but not for me. There is also an option to increase the speed of the front fans, but the noise will become too loud. If you put in a video card that intensively throws all the exhaust air out, the imbalance will be even stronger, and if there are a couple of them, then it’s scary to imagine. It’s a pity.

It’s time to answer all the items listed at the beginning.

— Minimum dimensions without sacrificing capacity. The case should be in the MidiTower format.

Antec Nine Hundred Two is a roomy MidiTower —
all is well .

— The case must not be flimsy. Noise isolation is welcome, but not required.

The case is made strong enough, there is no sound insulation —
all is well .

— No cuts from sharp edges or breakouts of plugs.

The body is solid, there is nothing to cut, there are no breaking plugs —
all is well .

— Front must be 5.25″ bays from top to bottom and have a movable HDD cage.

5. 25″ bays top to bottom + two movable drive cages —
all is well .

— Absolutely any video cards should fit.

Will fit if you unfasten the disk basket. In this case, the fan, filter and plug can be fixed in place —
all is well .

— The case must be wide enough so that there are no problems with installing coolers.

There may be problems due to the latch for the fan on the side cover, you need to break —
unacceptable for a case in this price category.

— Mounts in 5.25″ bays do not override the standard 8 screw holes.

There is a screw fastening, but for some reason the holes are displaced. It is impossible to fix all 8 at the same time.

— Expansion card latches must not override screws.

Expansion cards are screw-on only —
all is well .

— Adequate ventilation. The rear fans should be covered by a wire grill.

The ventilation is excellent, the case does not lose to an open stand even in quiet mode. There is no grill grate, but the stamped one is blown easily —
all is well .

— Sufficient cooling of all hard drives.

Hard drives cool perfectly —
all is well .

— Availability of disc vibration dampening system without sacrificing structural strength. Drive mounting system, fan, dust filter and bezels must be separable.

Robust construction, no vibration dampening system (apart from the thin plastic spacers on the mounting screws). The fan, filter and plugs are a monolithic unit, but the disk basket can be separated.

— The installation of the PSU and hard drives should not be hindered by anything

PSU is installed without problems, to install disks you need to unscrew the basket and pull it out through the front —
everything is fine .

— A minimum of non-standard fans that are unlikely to be replaced in the future.

120mm fan on the rear wall can be replaced, but you will have to abandon the built-in fan controller, the top 200mm fan is unique, it is not realistic to replace.

— All blowers should have filters that are easy to clean.

Filters are present on all blowers and are not always easy to clean. I would like to see a filter on the top fan.

The newfangled scheme, when the PSU sucks air directly from the floor, is unacceptable.

PSU is located very well — at the bottom, with the fan up. Does not try to cool with hot air from the CPU cooler and does not suck dust from the floor —
all is well .

— USB and headphone sockets on the front panel must be located in adequate places. The presence of a front cover is not desirable.

The connectors are well placed, there is no front cover. But the color marking of the audio outputs would not hurt.

— The casing must not be underpressured.

There is low pressure in the case and it is almost impossible to correct the situation —
very bad.

— No extra holes.

Excess holes only in expansion card blanks. The main air exchange passes through fans —
all is well .

What is the result? A specific blunder with a latch on the side cover, which can rest against the cooler and reduced pressure in the case, but this drawback is inherent in absolutely all cases that I have seen.
