Pressing the joystick brings up the full OSD. Additional keys provide direct access to GameVisual (picture modes) and GamePlus. A cancel button will remove not only the menu but any reticles, timers, FPS counters, or the alignment guide if you have them up.

GameVisual has the same six picture modes we’ve seen on other Asus gaming monitors. Racing is the default, and it isn’t too bad in terms of accuracy, but our measurements showed sRGB to be the better choice. That mode is locked at around 195cd/m² and can’t be adjusted, but it has the lowest grayscale, gamma, and color errors of all the presets.

The VG245H has a Blue Light Filter like most modern screens. Setting zero means it’s off and each level, 1-4, increases the amount of compensation. It works well at reducing fatigue when working in apps that have white backgrounds like a word processor or spreadsheet. You’ll want to turn it off for games and video though.

The Color menu has a decent set of calibration controls, though they’re not all available in all modes. Racing offers everything except Saturation, which is fine for our purposes. sRGB grays out all image options including brightness.

The Color Temp sub-menu has three presets plus a user mode, which works with good precision. We were able to reduce grayscale errors to a very low level. There is no gamma control so we had to fix a few issues using the contrast control, which is set too high by default. We’ll explain this in more detail on page four.

The Image menu offers a few picture tweaks like Trace Free (overdrive) and VividPixel, which adds some edge enhancement. Trace Free has five levels of operation of which 80 (out of 100) represents the sweet spot between blur reduction and ghosting. You’ll need to scroll down to the second portion of this menu to find the FreeSync control, which is turned off by default. You won’t get any other indication of its status either by an OSD message or the color of the power LED. Turn it on here, reboot the monitor, then enable it in AMD Catalyst to complete the process. It works over a range of 40-75Hz.

Remaining system options cover things like OSD language and timeout, DDC/CI, power LED, and factory reset. Signal info is limited to resolution and refresh rate. You also get the current picture mode and input in every screen. It would be really helpful to know when FreeSync is enabled and that info is missing.

Finally, the VG245H offers four settings memory slots. This is a feature that should be on every computer monitor regardless of price or purpose. We’re glad to see it included on this value-oriented display.

Calibration

Racing mode provides a good starting point for calibration. However, if you don’t plan to make adjustments, choose the sRGB mode instead. It locks out all image controls and fixes output at 195cd/m² but it is fairly accurate. For our tests, we calibrated the Racing mode and achieved good results after reducing the contrast slider and tweaking the RGB controls. Here are the settings we used for our review.

The VG245H includes the same GamePlus features we saw on the PG248Q. You get a selection of reticles, four countdown timers, an FPS counter and an alignment guide. None of the features can be used together. You have to choose one. Once activated, the different elements can be moved around with the joystick. To cancel, just press the key below the stick. The FPS counter is always a small black box with white text, so you’ll probably want to relegate it to a corner. The alignment guide is helpful for both horizontal and vertical multi-screen installations.

More and more computer monitors have started using FreeSync technology over the past few years, but it takes more than variable refresh rates to make a good gaming monitor. The Asus VG245H seems to have several features that provide next level gaming experience. I tested the VG245H, evaluating its design, image quality and more to see how it performs as a budget gaming monitor. nine0003

Design: Ergonomic and VESA compliant

VG245 black with slight blue highlights on base. There is a line pattern on the back of the monitor that gives the VG245 a spaceship feel. The base design is exceptional and it connects to a long arm which in turn connects to a monitor.

Ergonomics are important for the best computer monitors, the VG245 is height adjustable and you can raise or lower it by about five inches (130mm). The kickstand swivels, making it easy to point the screen towards another player if you’re swapping the controller back and forth with someone sitting next to you. One of the best features of the design is its ability to rotate, which allows you to completely change the orientation of the monitor between landscape and portrait. Plus, despite all these tweaks, the monitor never feels wobbly or unstable—its plastic base and base are very solid. The stand even has a cut out section where you can tweak the cables for a neat look. However, once you tuck all those cables into the stand, it becomes increasingly difficult to pivot between portrait and landscape. The monitor’s bezel isn’t as thin as some more expensive monitors, but it doesn’t protrude either. Even though it’s not very thin, the VG245H doesn’t feel bulky or intrusive. Its stand is about eight inches deep, so it takes up a lot of desk space, but you need to have enough wiggle room. You can also mount the monitor on the wall if you want to completely free up desktop space as it has mounting holes. nine0003

There is a joystick on the back of the monitor that controls the main menu functions. The menu controls are very intuitive and there is a hard button right below the joystick that you press to exit the menu. Below the exit button, you’ll find three more controls that manage the power and gaming functions.

Installation process: plug and play

Setting up the monitor is easy, it is very plug and play. The bracket comes pre-attached so you only need to attach the base by simply placing it on the end and screwing in. The screw even has a handle on the end so you can tighten it without a screwdriver. The package includes one HDMI, one VGA and one audio cable — everything you need to get started. nine0003

Picture Quality: Vibrant HD Picture on Console

Like the best 24″ gaming monitors, the VG245H offers a stellar picture when playing console titles. Its maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 and refresh rate of 75 Hz are average to slightly above average for a monitor in this price range, but this doesn’t affect the monitor’s performance when gaming on consoles.

The monitor is FreeSync compatible so if you use the VG245 for PC gaming it will adjust its speed to stay in sync with a compatible graphics card, but it is still maxed out at 75Hz via HDMI. The 1ms response time means there is absolutely no perceptible input lag when playing. nine0003

Adjusting the settings makes a huge difference to image quality. The monitor’s 250-nit brightness, combined with Asus’ Smart Contrast Ratio (dynamic contrast ratio), makes colors pop. It also has several modes besides the base game mode, including special modes for scenery, racing, cinema, RTS/RTG, FPS, and sRPG. You can also adjust the blue light filter level (zero to level four) to give your eyes some rest. nine0003

There are many other adjustment options — brightness, contrast, color temperature and even skin tone. You can take advantage of settings such as Bright Pixel, which helps sharpen outlines and reduce blur, leave no trace, which can help reduce ghosting, or Smart View, which adjusts brightness based on the content on the screen.

The VG245H offers a stellar image when playing console titles.

If you like to create your own custom settings, you can save up to four profiles. This way you can quickly adjust the image for the games you play the most. I’ve used this monitor mainly for console gaming, and I’ve created various custom settings for dark, harder-to-view games like Injustice 2, Diablo 3, and Arkham Knight. I could clearly see white highlights on Batman’s suit, as well as clouds in the night sky and details on city building windows. nine0003

Audio: Decent but not amazing

The VG245 has two separate 2-watt stereo speakers that don’t actually sound that bad. The highs and lows are much richer than the lows, but speech sounds very clear and the speakers are absolutely adequate for a standalone game console. If you want to play music or watch movies on the monitor, you can connect an external speaker using the audio output jack.

Software: Asus Multiframe and GamePlus

Asus Multiframe software is available for compatible Asus monitors such as the VG245. This is free software that makes it easy to organize multiple open windows on your desktop. Asus Multiframe is relatively easy to use and allows you to tidy up your desktop in just a few minutes. The

VG245 also includes GamePlus in its OSD, which sets the monitor apart from other gaming monitors in its price range. GamePlus has crosshairs, screen timers, a fps counter, and screen leveling. There are only four crosshairs (well, two in two different colors) and the FPS counter can definitely be distracting after a while, but I did find the timer feature really useful. Games tend to make time move at a different pace — five hours can easily feel like five minutes. Since it is possible to set the timer between 30 and 90 minutes when you say «I’m going to play for 30 minutes and then get back to work» you can actually do it. Time still flies though.

Compatibility: No DisplayPort or USB

The VG245H does not have a DP connection option and also does not have a USB port. It has two HDMI ports and you can connect via VGA. The two HDMI ports are a nice feature because you can connect your console and PC to the VG245H at the same time and switch between devices without having to change cables. nine0003

Price: pay a little, get a lot

The VG245 usually sells for under $200, which is a very fair price. The design (especially the ergonomic stand), customization options, and extra features give the monitor a high-end look that easily justifies the price.

Asus VG245H vs. Acer XFA240

The Acer XFA240, another 24-inch budget gaming monitor, has a similar swivel stand that allows you to switch between landscape and portrait modes, and many of the specs are similar. However, the Acer XFA240 is FreeSync and G-Sync compatible. Also, unlike the Asus VG245H (viewed on Amazon), the Acer XFA240 has display port connectivity and an extremely fast refresh rate (144Hz) for this price range. The Acer monitor has only one HMDI port, while the Asus VG245H has two. nine0003
