Hello,
Sorry for the ignorance, I’ve just had a quote for a new system and the CPU listed is an AMD Athlon 64 3500 (939), does the 3500 indicate the speed?
The reason I ask is that on the companies literature they also show a similar system with an Intel Pentium 4 650 (3. 4GHz) as both are in the same price bracket is one better than the other?
Most of my work is boring office type stuff, CorelDraw and surfing. No games.
Regards….Mike

the 3500 is 2.2Ghz. The number 3500 indicates that it is «comparable» to a 3.5Ghz (or 3.4Ghz) Pentium 4, I believe.
The Athlons are more geared towards gaming, where as the Pentiums are more for the office stuff, and encoding.
If all you’re going to do is normal office stuff (non-demanding work), then I’d suggest you just get whichever has the best price for you. My 2 cents.
EDIT: here’s some info for you on the 3500: http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q3/athlon64-3500/index.x?pg=1

Cores
A large number of cores improves performance in multi-threaded applications.
At the moment, increasing the number of processor cores is one of the priorities for increasing performance.
Level 2 cache
Technological process
Crystal size
Number of transistors
Threads
More threads help the cores process information more efficiently. Real performance will be noticeable in very specific tasks (video editing, databases).
Maximum frequency
Faster clocked processors perform more calculations per second and thus provide better performance.
Level 1 Cache
The fastest level of cache that works directly with the core. The larger the cache, the better the performance.
64 bit support
Max. number of processors in configuration

Power Demand (TDP)
The calculated heat output shows the average heat dissipation in load operation,
the larger the value, the more the requirements for cooling and power consumption increase.
