Yup, you read it correctly! AMD is releasing a «new» 90nm X2! Like the lower powered X4 9950, this one goes from 125W down to 89W. And, it goes 2MB L2 cache! I wasn’t aware that AMD was still producing these fast chips on 90nm.

Bahhh when i read athlon 64 x2….i thought yess 6500+! but no….
i´m disappointed,90 nm are not worth it,amd needs to release denebs and the 6500+ soon,can´t wait any longer…

Unfortunately we are gonna have to wait a little more for it…i really like amd but they´ve saying that deneb´s would be out this month and i still haven´t seen anything…and i read about the 6500+ like 5 or more months ago…

Yes. To be fair the 120w Windsor was better then the 6000+ Brisbane too. Windsor is just a better core.

The Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is based on the Windsor 90 nm family and is part of the Athlon 64 X2 series.
AMD’s K8 series has entered the market, upping the ante to Intel in its high-stakes game for desktop market dominance with a well-thought-out lineup of new chips that are pushing mainstream platforms to higher core counts and more raw computing than we’ve ever been before. or seen. As a result, Intel’s dominance of the enthusiast community is under threat in a way we haven’t seen in over a decade.
this is something Athlon 64 X2 6000+. AMD spins the tdp dial up to 125w on this 2-core 2-thread chip, making it a high performance counterpart to the 89w Athlon 64 X2 5600+ which is essentially the same 90nm chip built with the K8 microarchitecture but with a lower tdp rating. this chip comes from our first look at the Editors’ Choice K8 series, came close to the Intel Pentium D 960, so it’s fair to say we have high hopes for a higher performance model. AMD still hasn’t provided a printable sample of the chip, so we bought it at retail and put it under a microscope.
Like the more expensive Athlon 64 X2 5600+, the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ has higher base and boost frequencies of 3.1 and 3.1 GHz, respectively. it’s an increase in base frequency and an increase in clock frequency, but the real benefit should be a higher packet power tracking (ppt) envelope, which is a measure of the maximum amount of power delivered to a socket. The Athlon 64 X2 5600+ maxes out at 89W, while the motherboard can pump up to 142W to the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at peak performance. This opens up much more aggressive acceleration behavior on both single and multiple cores, which could widen the performance gap beyond what we see in the spec.
As we’ve seen, gaming remains an advantage for Intel, so if you need to squeeze every last frame, Intel processors are a good choice. Most of this performance advantage will be less noticeable when playing games at higher resolutions or if you pair the processors with a weaker graphics card.
Value seekers who aren’t afraid to hit the precision overclock button and have adequate cooling should look to the Athlon 64 X2 5600+, which delivers roughly equivalent performance to the Athlon 64 X2 6000+, especially if the buying decision is heavily game-driven. if advanced overclocking and overclocking are trivial to you, AMD also offers the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ for $150. it still features 2-cores and 2-threads, but runs at a slower 2.9GHz and only peaks at 2.9GHz.
