Hello, I would be grateful for your opinion. <BR><BR>I just bought ATI All in Wonder 9600XT to upgrade from GF4 Ti 4200.<BR><BR>Why do the current instructions here<BR>http://www.ati.com/support/installation/radeon.html<BR>state that <BR>»… install the appropriate WDM capture drivers PRIOR TO installing the display drivers….»<BR><BR>…when XP drivers appear to include the WDM Capture driver even thorugh it is availabale AS A SEPARATE DOWNLOAD for Windows 98/Me and when you download it from there it says that it is also compatible for Windows XP.<BR><BR><BR>Does this WDM driver have to be installed BEFORE Catalyst 4.11 or not?<BR><BR>Why does ATI say that it does in their current instructions if it does not? It is not included on the XP download page, how can this not confuse new users?

Also, the sticky at this section says <I>»XTs and 5950s are the most idiotic purchases in the high end video card world, because for a bit more money you can get a giant leap in performance. » </I><BR><BR>But I paid $124 after rebate for the AIW 9600XT because I needed a quality capture card and it seemed like an OK upgrade from GF 4200 Ti to boot.<BR><BR>Was this $124 spent as a «most idiotic purchase» for Nov 26, 2004 or does the lower price help it avoid that label?

The installer for the driver package will handle it appropriately, I think that that’s just there to keep you from doing it seperately. As far as confusing new users, I think you’re right and you may want to email them and mention it.<BR><BR>XTs, this is a general rule that I think was mostly meant to apply to the 9800XT which is still close to $300 at most places, which is nearly enough money to get the far superior 6800GT.

The naming and numbering schemes for video cards perpetrated by the innovator companies are even more confusing. A pox on their houses.

There is a separate WDM driver download avilable from 98/Me downloads, (not 2000/XP downloads) but when you download it says that it is alos compatible with XP. <BR><BR>When you say it’s not easy, do you mean this separate download should be installed first on XP, even though it is included in the disaply driver?<BR><BR>That display driver btw has a .net version, what’s that all about, which one do you all use?

Sorry I can’t help more. I don’t mess with this stuff much. I got my AIW working a few months ago and haven’t dared to touch it since.<BR><BR>When it tried to install it would look in the wrong folders and was generally a royal pain.<BR><BR>I don’t understand the 98/XP issue. Might you have a 98 readme that simply states that they support the hardware in XP. Not that that particular download is for XP? Even if you already have a 98 version, just follow the links for XP downloads and get what’s there. Then you don’t have to worry whether it’s right.<BR><BR>Whatever it was I eneded up with used .net framework for database management or something. As I recall I also had to do seperate installs. The display driver alone wasn’t enough.
