Many switches offer advanced management features, enabling network administrators to monitor and control the entire network from a central location. This centralized management simplifies network maintenance and troubleshooting, reducing downtime and boosting productivity.

How do I choose the best network switches for my business?

Choosing the best network switch for your business is crucial to ensure efficient network management, reliable connectivity, and overall improved performance. When making a decision, consider your business needs and budget against types of network switches, performance and speed, and any additional features you need.

Understand your business needs

Take into account the size of your network, the number of devices you need to connect and the level of traffic your network experiences. For small businesses or home offices, an 8- or 16-port unmanaged switch may be sufficient. However, larger businesses or networks with higher traffic may require a more robust solution with a higher port count and advanced management features.

Consider the type of network switch

There are three main types of network switches: unmanaged, managed, and smart (or semi-managed) switches. Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play devices that don’t offer any advanced management features, making them suitable for small networks. Managed switches provide advanced features like VLANs, QoS, and network monitoring, making them suitable for larger networks or those requiring high levels of control. Smart switches offer a middle ground between the two, with some advanced features but at a lower cost than managed switches.

Evaluate performance and speed

Choose a switch that offers sufficient speed and performance to meet your network’s requirements. For most businesses, a Gigabit Ethernet switch will be sufficient, providing fast connectivity for all connected devices. However, if your network requires higher speeds or more advanced features, consider a Multi-Gigabit or even a 10-Gigabit switch.

Assess additional features

Depending on your network requirements, you might need specific features such as PoE, which allows you to power devices like IP cameras or access points through the network cable. Also, consider switches with energy-efficient designs and features such as EEE or Green Ethernet, which can help reduce power consumption and overall operational costs.

Determine your budget

Lastly, determine your budget and consider the long-term costs of ownership. While some switches may be more expensive upfront, they may offer advanced features or better performance that can save you money and time in the long run. Additionally, keep in mind that the prices of these switches listed in this article may vary depending on the seller and location.

Network Switches Buyer Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

Aside from price, other factors need to be considered when you’re looking for a network switch that fits your needs.

  1. Forwarding rates – Look into a network Ethernet switch’s forwarding and processing rates. The lower the number, the slower the forwarding rate. Take a 48-port Gigabit switch for example. At full-wire speed, the switch generates 48 Gbs of traffic. However, if its forwarding rate is 32 Gb/s, its ports can’t operate at a full-wire speed at the same time.
  2. Future growth – Whether you want a switch for your home or your office, one factor you need to consider when making a purchase is future growth. For an increasingly digital space, you might want to buy a switch that can scale. This may also mean investing in a WiFi 6 router, a wired router, or a modem router, depending on your needs. Plus, if you’re planning to invest in a future-proof model, look for options that offer a lifetime warranty.
  3. Set-up – If you want to set up a moderately-sized home network but you aren’t tech-savvy, you can opt for a switch with a plug-and-play design. It requires no configuration and software installation. Examples of this include a Linksys or Belkin brand router. Some of the easiest and finest Belkin routers are simple to set up. However, if you want control over your network, you might want to look for advanced features that let you manage or troubleshoot issues. That said, if you have an old router to toss out, you’ll want to know what to do with that old router and not just junk it.

rating of 2023 and tips for choosing

network switches, unlike hubs, forward packets addressally, being generally more efficient devices .

Thanks to this and the affordable price, the former have practically forced the latter out of the market.

In this review, we will consider what a switch is, the criteria for choosing network equipment of this type, which models are the best on the market today.

Page navigation:

What is a switchboard?

Important! A network switch (switch) is called equipment designed to connect several computer devices within one or more networks.

The switches transmit data directly to recipients, which improves network performance and security.

Switch selection criteria

Network switching equipment of this class is characterized by an impressive number of parameters. Let’s analyze the most important of them:

  • Number of ports.
    Switches with 5 to 48 ports are available on the market.
    Models with a small number of RJ-45 connectors are suitable for small LANs in the home and office.
    It is reasonable to purchase switches for 20 or more ports with serious extensions.
  • Network model.
    Almost all available unmanaged switches are layer 2.
    Level 3 switches have a range of configurable features.
    Expensive transport models belong to the fourth level with the distribution of the data flow, taking into account the intellectual component.
  • MAC address table.
    The capacity of the MAC address table should be calculated in advance, taking into account the potential expansion of the network.
    Lack of entries in the address table slows down data transfer.
  • Baud rate.
    This parameter is the base, and in fact the maximum port speed.
    Some switches have ports with different speed modes or combinations.
  • Internal bandwidth.
    An important characteristic declared by the manufacturer.
    The user is required to compare it with the external bandwidth.
    If the first is less than the second, the equipment may freeze and slow down under loads.

Switch (switch or switch) — a network device for combining network nodes, which transmits data to the recipient. This increases the reliability and speed of the network. They are divided into unmanaged and managed, sometimes custom ones are a separate group. The first ones are the simplest and most inexpensive devices that require a minimum of settings and are easy to maintain. They work at the 2nd OSI layer. Managed function at higher levels, their variety is huge. Consider the best switches based on their cost, features, user reviews and expert opinions.

Switch rating

To compile the rating, we selected more than two dozen models in various price ranges and with different purposes. According to technical characteristics, especially unmanaged models, differ little. To set the final score and build a rating, we focused on the cost in large online stores, the opinions of users and experts in network technologies.

Comprehensive evaluation considered:

  • Ability to supply power to clients (cameras) and peak load: total and per port;
  • Variety of current supported technologies and protocols;
  • MAC address table size;
  • Real external bandwidth;
  • Ability to isolate clients;
  • Easily set up managed models;
  • Port throughput;
  • Placement: stand, wall, table;
  • QoS – option to prioritize traffic by type and port.

The main characteristic that allowed these models to get into the TOP is stability. Even a couple of freezes a year — and the device does not get into the rating.

Best 2-4 Port Switches

After a close study of a dozen contenders for the top network switches, there are only three worthy options left. It has the function of automatic polarity detection. 802.1p prioritization is implemented to ensure smooth 4K streaming. The indicators on the rear panel do not display the link speed.

Advantages:

  • Integrated power supply.
  • Wall mounting.

Drawbacks:

  • Often hangs at temperatures below +100C.

A silent switch without configuration, which can upset the implementation of the indication — the LEDs will not show the connection speed of a particular client. When installed in a narrow space where there is poor free air movement, the processor may overheat.

How to choose a switch

To buy the right switch, you need to know exactly how many and what devices you will connect to it. The number of required ports depends on them. It is desirable to take with a margin for further expansion of the network. Depending on the clients, they may need power. IP cameras and phones need support for PoE + technology — power supply over twisted pair. The characteristics of the devices determine the total maximum power and each line (port). Also consider:

  • Speed and number of ports — Ethernet and 1000Base-X SFP for fiber optic connection.
  • Warranty — at least 2-3 years. A lifetime warranty is desirable, but few manufacturers offer one.
  • Type: managed or unmanaged. For home use and offices where there are no relevant specialists, take the unmanaged model.
  • Switching method: full-duplex — the receiver and transmitter work simultaneously and half-duplex — alternately.
  • Mounting type — please note. There are models for installation in a cabinet, on a table and with a wall mount.
  • PoE support and power specifications: power total and per port.
  • Supported network standards and protocols.
  • Cooling type: active or passive, fan noise level.
  • Software availability and capability.
