This tutorial is made for whom it may concern.

Many people have reported many problems with the monitors mentioned, ranging from bad HDR, to washed out colors and crushed black levels, so i’m making this tutorial to help everyone who wants to get the best out of their monitor

DISCLAIMER: Every monitor needs to be calibrated differently, this tutorial was made with what worked for me, the settings i’m using should still be close to what everyone should use, but be sure to experiment yourself with the settings that will be mentioned. Also keep in mind these monitors are known to have a huge difference between each due to screen lottery, you may have a monitor with bad contrast ratio while someone else has one with good contrast ratio, so keep that in mind

First of, i see many people bash these monitors for it’s poor HDR, while it has only a dew dimming zones and only hdr600, the difference between HDR on this monitor vs a SDR monitor are vast in terms of colors and black levels as we can see in these images http://imgur. com/a/gi1yp8u Hdr600 is more then enough for a normal to dim lighted room, id argue that its even too bright. (The display on the left is an ipad 8th gen which is considered to be a very good display, both screen were calibrated around 300 nits for the comparison)

Before setting up your monitor, go to lagom calibration site to make sure your black levels and highlights don’t crush during calibration, if they do change the values i will mention till they no longer crush

To get similar results to these you will need to set up your display by changing the following settings.


-Change your picture mode to «High brightness mode»

-Up the brightness to the max unless you are in the complete dark, which i would recommend around 50 brightness in that case

-Up the contrast to 100 as well, (for some reason while in SDR , upping the contrast to more then 75 crushes the highlights and black levels, but its not the case during HDR)

-Up the black equalizer between 16 and 20, Depending on how bright your room is, 16 if very bright, 20 if very dark, (same as with the contrast, the black levels and highlights usually crush with these settings on SDR, but on HDR , it doesn’t)

-Use gamma mode1 in color settings

And make sure local dimming is on or your monitor will not be able to go to it’s full 600 nits

Now that the screen is calibrated, save up the settings in one of your 3 buttons below your monitor, then its time to set up windows for HDR:

-Right click on your desktop and click nvidia control panel or the same equivalent setting but for AMD

-Go to change resolution and make sure «Use NVIDIA color settings» is checked

-Change «Desktop color depth» to highest (32-bit)

-Change «Output color depth» to 10 bpc

-Change «Output color format» to RGB

-Change «Output dynamic range» to Full

-Save the settings on the bottom right

-Go to «Adjust video color settings» on the left side

-Click on «With the NVIDIA settings»

-Go to «Advanced» and change «Dynamic range» to Full (0-255)

-Once you are done save again!

-Right click on your desktop and click «Display settings»

-Click «Use HDR»

-Click on «Windows HD Color Settings»

-Now Make sure everything is turned on

DISCLAIMER: Do NOT increase the «HDR/SDR brightness balance» slider or you will get washed out reds and broken highlights in some games and media So make sure it is at the minimum value and nothing else

Now that we are done with HDR lets calibrate the monitor to make it look better in SDR

-Change your picture mode to custom as this was the mode they used to calibrate your monitor colors in their report

-Change the brightness to your liking but makes sure to keep the brightness the lowest you can possibly handle as it will slightly affect the black levels in the image, in my case i use 15-20 brightness in a dark room and 50 brightness when there’s light

-Change the contrast to 75 , it is the most commonly used contrast level for this monitor as more then that , will make the black levels of highlights crush as mentioned before, and less then that and the colors will look washed out

-Change the sharpness to 56, as 60 adds sharpness so you are not getting an accurate image and it makes aliasing more visible

-Change your black equalizer to either 8 or 9 as the default 13 crushes black levels in some cases (some games may look washed out at first , so make sure to change their gamma/brightness settings ingame)

-keep the colors and color tone and gamma at their default which is 50/50/50, normal and gamma mode1, unless you don’t like the reds in this monitor, In that case you can slighty lower the reds

(Example: 43,50,51 , this was the setting used in «rtings» calibrations)

Samsung CHG70 Review Introduction

Pretty much a big part of the gaming community will have been waiting for the Samsung CHG70. This is the first gaming monitor of a 144Hz high refresh rate LED LCD panel, a WQHD (2560×1440) resolution, quantum dot technology, Freesync 2, and High Dynamic Range (HDR). The best gaming monitor? At least a great hope, and finally I was able to review the Samsung CHG70 full of anticipation. HDR sounds quite tempting, but I was never convinced that HDR will work properly on a display with a brightness of 500 cd / m2 and a contrast ratio of around 2500:1. But maybe this looks different in monitors? No matter what, with 144 Hz you have a flawlessly smooth gaming experience. Most of the people probably will miss a G-Sync feature on this pc monitor but for those who prefer a backlight strobing feature (equal to ULMB) let me tell you something: On the Samsung CHG70, this works pretty well. The curve of the Samsung works great to avoid color shift limitations on a VA panel. Otherwise, it also generates a bit more issues within the overall homogeneity.


The first HDR gaming monitor was born: Samsung CHG70

You shouldn’t expect too much from the Samsung CHG70s HDR feature simply because of two reasons. First, we cannot compare a VA TV with a VA monitor, simply because you have harsher viewing angles on a pc monitor compared to a tv display. The result out from this is, that the perception of the contrast will decrease the harsher the viewing angles and combined with this the VA glow because blacks, in this case, brighten up and measurements do not include the VA glow in viewing angles. Second, for a really good HDR image on your screen, not only the contrast and brightness is important. As soon as your monitor receives an HDR signal, your blacks usually also brighten up and this only can be compensated with a well-working build in local dimming technology (a direct LED solution would work best for a VA panel type gaming monitor). The Samsung CHG70 unfortunately only does support 8 local dimming zones, which are by far not enough for a gaming monitor with more VA glow than on a TV. I own a Sony XE9305 where HDR works by FAR better (but still not perfect with blooming effects) than on the Samsung CHG70 and when I disable its local dimming feature (64 dimming zones) the HDR image quality instantly drops to around 10 times worse.

Difference between the CHG70 in 27 Inch (C27HG70) and 32 Inch (31.5) (C32HG70) Version

The first difference is of course that the C27HG70 compared to the C32HG70 has a higher PPI (pixels per inch) and combined with this a sharper overall image while the C32HG70 has nearly the same sharpness as a 24″ monitor with a Full HD (1080p) resolution. But there are two minor differences between both models.


First difference

The C27HG70 (CHG70 in 27″) Inch version doesn’t suffer from flickering issues while the C32HG70 (CHG70 in 31.5″) has built-in PWM. This means, that on lower brightness settings the CHG70 in 32″ Inch has flickering issues (as you can see in the video review)


Second difference

The C27HG70 has a much higher lottery in terms of DSE (Dirty Screen Effect) issues and «banding». This means (depending on your individual unit — while you can also get one without or only with a tiny bit banding/DSE issues) that you will observe banding strips on a uniform and mostly darker backgrounds (grey, dark blue, dark green etc.). The bigger problem, however, is, that you will be able to notice something like «shadow strips» or rather called «dirty screen» in moving content. Depending on how much DSE issues your unit has, you can even notice these banding strips on mostly all kind of image content/games when moving in a game or even when watching a movie. However, it’s mostly visible in uniform colors or image content without many structures like skies for example. There are several videos according to the DSE, banding, and homogeneity issues on YouTube.


How does it look like? While I don’t have tested the 27″ Inch version of the Samsung CHG70 you can find photos on the CFG70 in 27″ (Full HD 144Hz version) Inch of my review, which also has a bigger lottery in terms of DSE and homogeneity. You should consider that the amount can vary and from what I saw currently in the C27HG70 it has even more issues than the CFG70 in 27″.
