«Being a good soldier comes down to one thing. To one single question: What are you prepared to sacrifice? When they came to me with the nanosuit, I sacrificed Laurence Barnes, the man I was, to become Prophet. When my own flesh and blood held me back, I sacrificed that too. Replaced it, like a spare part. Victory costs. Every time, you pay a little more. I saw a glimpse of what’s coming and there was nothing left of me to stop it. When the greatest combat machine fails… what do we do then? What do I do?!«
―Prophet’s narration in the opening scene of Crysis 3.

Major Laurence «Prophet» Barnes is the squad leader of Raptor Team during the events of Crysis on the Lingshan Islands and a major character in both Crysis and Crysis 2. A copy of his personality and memories returns as the protagonist in Crysis 3 within the Nanosuit 2.0.

Background

A seasoned veteran of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom during the War on Terror, he spent years in schooling before joining the US Army. At some point, he took part in a CIA-backed drug raid in which civilians were killed. Angered by the deaths of innocents, he hospitalized his CIA supervisors by beating them to a bloody mess. When he was reprimanded by his superiors, he lashed out at them too. Since he was to be put in Leavenworth federal prison, he figured he should «really earn it» and proceeded to beat up everyone in the room. At the maximum-security prison, he received some documents sent by Jacob Hargreave. Barnes was set free, but in return he had to do a favor for Hargreave; he was the first soldier to try on the Nanosuit 1.0, where he met Nathan Gould.

Later at Lingshan, after he was temporarily MIA, Nomad, being the second-in-command, temporarily took Prophet’s role as squad leader. However, because of Nomad’s rank, Strickland assumed complete mission control.

Prophet leads Raptor Team through their first few objectives, the first being to find Aztec who was separated from the rest of the squad only to be informed by Jester and Nomad that Aztec was torn to shreds (along with a North Korean patrol) by an unknown hostile; he then incinerates his suit via remote and orders the two to stay on mission.

He later regroups with Nomad, Psycho, and Jester, who have made a startling find: a boat completely frozen solid in the middle of the tropical island. He then proceeds to order Psycho to «can it» after he questions their true motives for being on the island and argues that Prophet knows more than he’s telling him. After Prophet and Psycho’s argument, they hear a thunderous roar in the distance; suddenly, an Ceph Scout blasts from the other side of the boat, abducting Jester and dragging him off into the jungle. They finally manage to find him but it is too late as he was nothing more than a mangled corpse on the side of the mysterious mountain. Prophet proceeds to vaporize his suit and continues forward with the mission.

Later he regroups with Nomad, who also begins to question his superiors motives. This startles Prophet as he is used to Nomad taking orders without question and being utterly obedient. He then tells him that he has no idea whats going on and that he was sent to find these people and that’s what he is going to do. Immediately after his debacle with Nomad, he is abducted by a Ceph scout and dragged off into the jungle in the same manner as Jester. After his abduction, Nomad lists him as MIA rather than KIA hoping Prophet may still be alive; Major Strickland assumes mission command after this event.

Prophet miraculously reappears at the point of the story where Nomad exits the Ceph ship and saves him from a squad of Ceph troopers, but exhibiting strange behavior. He has somehow managed to jury-rig a complex alien weapon into operation while in the field, and seems to have a much deeper understanding of the Ceph than anyone else, but his suit’s thermal systems are badly damaged. Nomad then escorts Prophet out of the sphere and escorts him to a VTOL to safety. Once he returned to the USS Constitution, he is seen arguing with Psycho (who also managed to survive) telling him how he’s going to take the fight to the Ceph. Prophet was last seen stealing a VTOL and flying back to the island with the intent of stopping the Ceph forces singlehandedly. Presumed dead after the island is the subject of a nuclear strike, he was last revealed to be alive when Psycho received a radio communication from Prophet on a VTOL with Nomad and Helena Rosenthal after the defeat of the Warrior at the hands of Nomad, whom quickly reacts to this by ordering Psycho to take them back to the island in search of him as thousands of machines pour out of the alien ship.

There are only three references to Prophet during the game. The first one is radio transmission overheard by Psycho as he leaves the USS Maine in Frozen Paradise; Prophet is seemingly in danger of hypothermia since his Nanosuit is malfunctioning (Psycho responds, trying to find out where Prophet is, but Prophet is seemingly unable to hear Psycho, possibly due to radio interference). Later, in the second half of Below the Thunder, Commander Emerson informs Psycho that Prophet had been found alive. The final reference is in the later parts of From Hell’s Heart: Emerson announces that Prophet and Nomad have made it out of the Ice Sphere alive, and are headed to the carrier.

Prophet fought alone against the bipedal aliens until the VTOL arrived. Unfortunately, it was shot down by the Ceph right before it landed. A large bipedal alien then destroyed it, knocking down all the survivors and severely injuring Nomad. Prophet then came to their rescue and defeated the giant Ceph with a Gauss Rifle and grenades. He also defended his would-be saviors from any smaller Ceph as they got up. When they all got to safety, Prophet explained that the mission was nothing more than a cover for Jacob Hargreave’s agenda, to everyone’s shock.

Hargreave contacts Prophet and tells him there is a private vessel docked on the opposite side of the island. Upon hearing this, the survivors attempt to take a shortcut through the alien ship, but they are caught by the Ceph inside and forced to step through a portal, one that Prophet is reluctant to go through.

Prophet reveals that he befriended a North Korean soldier, Pak, some time after he stabbed the Ceph Scout and escaped into the cave. The KPA Nanosuit appears to have been designed separately, contrary to speculation that it was reverse-engineered from American technology. However, they were overwhelmed by the tentacles and Pak sacrificed himself to allow Prophet to escape.

Despite Nomad’s distrust, Prophet leads everyone back out through the portal. Outside, they find that they’ve travelled 18 hours back in time. Prophet reveals that he was surprised the first time, and even saw his old self talking to Pak. At the rendezvous point, Prophet hails the boat before contacting his old self to ensure that events unfold the same way. When the boat arrives, however, they are betrayed by the crew, who shoot them and disable their suits with a powerful EMP.

Once on board, Prophet is exasperated to find that Norman West, the CIA operative that he beat up in Panama, is behind all this. He ridicules West for killing women and children and beating up the immobilized Psycho, but relents when West threatens to kill Nomad. He tells the agent that the CIA has been wrong on multiple accounts, including at Lingshan, but West refuses to believe him. Prophet gives West the coordinates to Hargreave’s bunker in exchange for Nomad receiving medical treatment.

However, Morrison’s nuke hits the island and releases an EMP blast that frees the captives. Prophet and Psycho proceed to kill the crew, but are eventually fired upon with a rocket launcher. Nomad sacrifices himself and allows the two surviving members of Raptor Team to kill the rest of the crew. Prophet terminates West with extreme prejudice and after mourning Nomad’s loss, decides that Hargreave’s the only one that can help them.

At some point after the Lingshan incident, Prophet was promoted to the rank of Commander. It was then revealed that Prophet was under the orders of CryNet Systems CEO Jacob Hargreave, who had him investigate Lingshan to procure knowledge about the aliens, the Ceph. Prophet confronted Hargreave about his knowledge about the Ceph and was angered to learn that his superior actually used him and Raptor Team as mere test subjects to field test the Nanosuits against the Ceph; Hargreave calls Raptor Team’s casualties «a necessary sacrifice. » As a result, Prophet went rogue and stole the Nanosuit 2.0, becoming a wanted man in the process. In the years between 2020 and 2023, Prophet somehow discovered the existence of Ceph ships buried all over the Earth and traveled to New York City to warn the city of his findings. He arrives too late, however, as the invasion has already begun.

Prophet allied with Nathan Gould in finding a way to combat the Cephlapods. At some point, Prophet was infected with the Ceph’s «Manhattan» virus. On August 23, he rescued a dying Alcatraz after a Ceph Gunship destroyed his reinforcement submarine and killed most of the marines on board. He gave Alcatraz his suit before committing suicide so that the Nanosuit would adapt to Alcatraz, leaving behind a video inside the suit for Alcatraz.

Throughout Alcatraz’s journey, he encounters many of Prophet’s memories inside the suit, and the suit itself delivers messages from Prophet; these are possibly programs he instigated before his death. The CELL troopers which hunted Prophet mistook Alcatraz with him, and even after knowing he wasn’t him, continued calling him Prophet anyway.

After Alcatraz’s heroics in halting the Ceph invasion of Manhattan, he encounters a copy of Prophet’s personality stored within the suit itself. Prophet hinted the suit had somehow ‘preserved’ his spirit. He explained things about the Ceph and says that neither he nor Alcatraz could die yet, and the nanosuit bearer awakened. After receiving a radio transmission from Karl Rasch, the other founder of the Hargreave-Rasch Biomedical corporation, Alcatraz reply to him, «They call me…Prophet,» apparently in the latter’s voice.

During the time between Crysis 2 and Crysis 3, Alcatraz’s personality was completely supplanted by Prophet’s. While in Siberia, C.E.L.L. operatives shot and subdued him with K-Volts and imprisoned him in a stasis chamber for two decades. During this time, C.E.L.L. further enhanced him with captured Ceph technology. In 2047, Psycho, Dane, and Bandit, part of the Resistance, rescue him from CELL. Psycho explains that in Prophet’s 20 year absence, CELL used Ceph technology to generate nearly unlimited energy. Eventually, CELL gained a monopoly over the power supply, and used it to drive everyone into debt. Those who could not pay were sent to «volunteer camps.» A resistance movement formed in response to this. The resistance eventually freed Psycho from the skinning labs, and he joined their ranks. Tara Strickland also helps the resistance politically as a senator, but is unable to do much due to CELL’s political dominance. The source of CELL’s power generation for the entire world, called System X, is also located in the abandoned and encased New York, which has grown into a jungle. Psycho wants System X destroyed to free the world from CELL. Prophet, though worried about his visions of the Alpha Ceph showing him the end of the world, agrees.

Psycho and Prophet enter the dome, fighting through CELL forces and feral Ceph Stalkers. They reach the resistance headquarters, where they meet Karl Ernst Rasch and Claire Fontanelli, the commander of the resistance. Rasch tries to convince her that Prophet is what the resistance needs to finally overthrow CELL. Despite affirmations from Psycho, with whom she seems to have a special relationship, Claire is skeptical of Prophet, ostensibly because of the extensive modifications, the integration of Ceph genetic material, and the deep integration with his suit. Grudgingly, she eventually agrees.

Their first target is System X’s outer defenses. Despite CELL’s capacity for infinite power generation, CELL chose to power its defenses with a hydroelectric dam. Prophet hypothesizes that CELL does this because it fears something about System X. Prophet, who continues to have visions, disables the dam and then disables the System X facility. It is revealed that System X is the Alpha Ceph. A system program designed to kill the Alpha Ceph when necessary activates, but fails, and the facility self-destructs. The Alpha Ceph fires a beam into the atmosphere to open a wormhole to the Ceph home world in the M33 Galaxy. Through this wormhole, they plan to send an invasion force to invade the planet, revealing their true motives for inhabiting the planet for millions of years. The Ceph hivemind reactivates, and a coordinated Ceph attack ensues. Prophet resolves to kill the Alpha Ceph and end the threat once and for all.

Prophet learns that he must unlock his suit to defeat the Ceph. Prophet and Psycho head to the skinning laboratory to use the cradle to do this and to find out who was responsible for skinning Psycho. At the facility, they see firsthand the atrocities visited upon the Nanosuit soldiers by CELL. Psycho uses the cradle to remove the neural blocks put in place to prevent the Ceph from taking over Prophet’s mind. It also lifts the restrictions on the nanobots in Prophet, and they are now able to transform. Meanwhile, Psycho does more digging into his past, despite orders from Claire. He discovers that it was Claire who had skinned him and the others at the behest of CELL. Upset, he rebuffs efforts from Claire and Prophet to console him. Claire pleads that he was the reason she joined the resistance, and that she had no other choice. Prophet also claims that he had no other choice, and that he told him what he needed to know at the time of the Lingshan Incident. Psycho finds this unacceptable, as everyone has a choice. He hands Prophet the dogtags of Nomad, Aztec, and Jester, and leaves.

Prophet learns that because the Alpha Ceph is creating a wormhole, the CELL plans to use Archangel, a satellite based energy distribution platform that can draw power from the entire world’s power grid, as a directed energy weapon to destroy all of New York and hopefully the Alpha Ceph. Unfortunately, firing it at the Alpha Ceph would cause a chain reaction that would destroy the whole planet. To make matters worse, the Ceph attack Claire and the resistance. Prophet races to rescue them, but the situation is so dire that Claire tells him to leave them, as they are only holding him back. Psycho shows up with a VTOL and rescues the resistance. They proceed to the Archangel control facility where they shut off the weapon before it unleashes enough energy to set off a chain reaction. Rasch, who had used Ceph DNA to extend his lifespan, is recovered in the facility, but is now under the control of the Ceph. He disables Prophet and tries the same on Psycho, but Claire blocks his attack and Psycho shoots Rasch. No longer under control, Rasch implores the group to leave as the Ceph tentacle renews its attack. Prophet, Psycho, and the injured Claire board the VTOL and engage in a massive air battle, eventually crashing. Claire, succumbing to her injuries, is forgiven by Psycho and dies. Psycho laments to Prophet that he is powerless because he does not posses a Nanosuit. Prophet fights with Psycho, revealing that Rasch had incapacitated Prophet because of his integration with his suit, and that they only survived because of Psycho’s humanity. Psycho, now going by his human name Michael, resolves to do the slaughtering and procures another VTOL to take the battle and Prophet to the Ceph.

Michael and Prophet kill the Alpha Ceph, destroying the wormhole device, but the beam powering the wormhole pulls Prophet into space. Now in orbit, Prophet sees a massive Ceph Ship, similar to the one in Lingshan, coming through the wormhole. His suit heavily damaged, Prophet almost gives up, but instead he pushes on. Recalling Archangel’s immense power, Prophet hacks into the satellite and uses it to destroy the Ceph ship. This collapses the wormhole and ends the threat of invasion. In the explosion, Prophet is knocked off the satellite by debris and falls back to Earth. He impacts the water in Lingshan Island where 27 years ago the Ceph were initially discovered. When Prophet wakes up, he is in a house in Lingshan. In the background, there is a news broadcast of the now Senator Tara Strickland, who announces that the remaining assets of the CELL corporation have been seized as part of the global recovery effort. The Nanosuit, now more symbiotic than ever before, changes its outer layer to resemble Prophet’s original body. He grabs the dogtags of the deceased Raptor Team squad members, thinking how much he sacrificed his humanity and his body in his quest for victory. He walks out to the beach, throws the tags into the water, decides to use the original Prophet’s actual name «Laurence Barnes» from now on, walks back towards the house, and cloaks repeating his famous taglines «They called me Prophet. Remember me.»

In-game Character Information

In 2020, Major Laurence Barnes was equipped with a revolutionary combat system from Hargreave-Rash Biochemical: The nanosuit.

As the suit’s nanites bonded to skin and nerves, Barnes began his transformation into an entity we know as Prophet.

At first, ‘Prophet’ was simply the Major’s codename in the field, but as the suit’s true form became apparent, this began to change. Far from the simple ‘combat exoskeleton’ Hargreave-Rash promised, the nanosuit was actually a volatile cocktail of highly advanced technology and genetically engineered alien DNA.

During Field-testing on Lingshan, direct contact with the aliens caused a disturbing shift in the Major’s suit, bringing him closer in nature to the Ceph. But even as he fought the alien influence clawing at his mind, the suit-bounded soldier discovered that his new body could be adapted, upgraded, and evolved. The nanosuit allowed biological systems to be improved, modified, and even replaced. Each upgrade brought much-needed power to fight the Ceph incursion, but each came at a price:

With each replacement, each modification of his body, the Major became less man and more machine; less human and more Ceph; less Laurence Barnes and more Prophet. One piece at a time, he left his humanity behind.

In New York, Prophet replaced his Ceph-infected flesh altogether with a dying marine named Alcatraz, thus sacrificing the last remnants of the man he was to turn the tide of the war in humanity’s favor.

When the smoke cleared, Alcatraz was lost and Barnes himself was little more than a ghost haunting the machine. What remained to continue the fight, was Prophet.

Prophet — a killing machine holding onto the last treads of its barely-remembered humanity. Prophet — a relentless alien-hunter secretly plagued by unearthly visions and the pull of it’s own Ceph nature. Prophet — a deadly weapon system made from alien upgrades and knotted nano-musclepacks wrapped around a stolen corpse, dreaming it was once a man named Laurence Barnes.

Trivia

  • In a deleted training level in Crysis, Prophet is supposed to accompany Nomad and help him fight in a mock tutorial village.
  • In one of the unlockable flashbacks in Crysis 2, it was revealed that Prophet, like Nomad, visited the alien structure on Lingshan, where he learned of the Ceph locations via a map similar to the one in the ending clip and was contacted by Gould while inside.
  • In Crysis: Legion it is revealed that after the Lingshan incident, Prophet deserted from Delta Force and severed all ties with Hargreave, only contacting Nathan Gould, his ex-handler, occasionally. It is also revealed that he may have visited several other alien structures between the events of the two games, and that shortly prior to Crysis 2 he contacted Gould, wanting to deliver something very important to him (in all likelihood he was referring to the Nanosuit).
  • Prophet is voiced by James Vincent Meredith.
  • The callname Prophet becomes finally appropriate in Crysis 3, for various reasons.
  • Prophet is the only human who is able to use Ceph weaponry.
  • Prophet, Psycho, & Nomad are the only surviving members of Raptor Team.
  • In the end of Crysis 3, Prophet merged with the Nanosuit, existing as a single super-human being with all the powers of the Nanosuit.

Crysis 3 Final Reflection and Review

“A good soldier knows there’s only one thing he can rely on when the chips are down: Not his cutting edge intel, not his state of the art equipment, and not his top of the line weapon. Just himself; it took me a long time to remember that.” —Prophet

Since the events of last time, which were drafted during Thanksgiving, I’ve watched Prophet fight through the CELL’s facilities, blew their dam to pieces, accidentally activated the Alpha Ceph, and fight to stop CELL from activating the Archangel weapons platform, which, if fired, would trigger a chain reaction that would render the planet uninhabitable. Prophet subsequently resolves to kill the Alpha Ceph, who has since opened a wormhole to the Ceph homeworld and is coordinating an all-out assault on Earth. The Alpha Ceph is killed, and Prophet uses Archangel to destroy the first Ceph warship coming through the wormhole, causing it to collapse and ending the Ceph threat for the present. Throughout Crysis 3, themes about what constitutes humanity linger: unlike the previous Crysis installations, there is a single unifying theme in Crysis 3 that is driven home repeatedly. Thus, even though Crysis 3 might be a remarkably shiny title that reclaimed its throne as one of the best-looking games of all time, the presence of a well-defined theme means that Crysis 3 provides the strongest characterisations and narratives of any of the titles (besides Crysis Warhead). This aspect was not unnoticed by more seasoned reviewers, although one must wonder how these elements allowed Crysis 3 to remain compelling throughout the entire game, while maintaining all of the graphical fidelity that Crysis games are generally known for.

The answer to Crysis 3’s enjoyment value lies in the dynamics between Lawrence “Prophet” Barnes and Michael “Psycho” Sykes: in the years since the events of Crysis 2, Prophet was captured by CELL while seeking the Alpha Ceph, and in his opening remarks, suggests that how he had been able to achieve what he had was through sacrificing his humanity. Meanwhile, Michael resents that CELL skinned him of his Nanosuit, and that without it, he is unable to fight CELL or Ceph. The dynamics between Prophet, who regrets discarding his humanity and Michael, who desires the power to protect those around him, allow the two to act as a foil to one another, and after a major battle where Michael’s love interest, Claire Fontanelli, perishes, the two come to realise what it truly means to be human: it was never about their Nanosuits, but the men using them, that made the difference each and every time. This is the main message in Crysis 3, that to be human is simply to express concern for fellow human beings, utilising all of one’s available cunning and resources to protect one another. Thus, while Prophet has physically become more machine than man, his resolve to beat the Alpha Ceph for humanity’s sake ensures that he remains human, and similarly, while Michael may no longer has a Nanosuit, his resolve makes him as effective as Prophet. Watching this unfold, and watching Prophet come to terms with what he’s become, made each level in Crysis 3 enjoyable, adding the reason to empathise with and be concerned with Prophet’s fate as the game progressed.

Screenshots and Commentary

  • The Nanodome is a CELL construct that was designed to allow them to destroy the remaining Ceph and keep the Alpha Ceph subjugated so they could continue harnessing its power. Stepping out here for the reminded me of Crysis‘ first sunset, during which the darkness gives way to light and throws the world into sharp contrast to really showcase the game’s graphical fidelity.
  • The abandoned skyscrapers and rusting train yard satisfactorily captures the post-human environment that Alan Weisman describes in “The World Without Us”: in fact, he uses New York as a primary example in his book, and the first real mission of Crysis 3 has Prophet evading NAX to destroy a defense tower, capitalising on the tall grasses and ruined trains as cover.
  • That Prophet can pick up and use Ceph weaponry in Crysis 3 is amazing. The weapons cause Prophet’s HUD to take on a blue colour, and are incredibly powerful. A handful of shots are enough to take out NAX’s missile systems, but also leaves the weapon’s battery critically low.
  • Crysis 2 had been somewhat underwhelming when it came to graphics, but Crysis 3 takes things through the top. With known specs, I designed my new machine in 2013 to be able to handle Crysis 3 on high settings at 1080p, running at 60 FPS. On the whole, the game was a very smooth experience and there were only some scenes that caused the frame rate to drop to 45 FPS.
  • The hanger housing derelict trains is yet another fine example of how complex the lighting can be in Crysis 3 can be: the environment must be fairly dusty if light rays are visible. Here, I’m using the Mk.60 Mod 0 LMG; its high damage and rate of fire makes it quite effective against the Ceph, but it’s hampered by its reload time and low reserve capacity, which means that I discard the weapon once the Typhoon became available.
  • Even on “merely” high settings, Crysis 3 looks absolutely amazing, besting out most of the games in my library for the title of “Best looking game”. However, Crysis 3 also excels at storytelling in comparison to its predecessor, and here, I’m keeping two eyes out for feral Ceph stalkers, which continue to roam without the Alpha Ceph guiding it.
  • The L-TAG from Crysis 2 also makes a return, although I never really got too much use out of it: its 60mm grenades are quite heavy and fly in an arc, and ammunition for it is uncommon, limiting its usefulness even against tougher enemies.
  • The mission to destroy the CELL dam was quite memorable: skyscrapers and streets are buried under 30 meters of water, and on the dam’s other side, the bare foundations of damaged buildings are exposed, creating a surreal environment. I’m guessing that the Nanodome suppresses cold air and wind, otherwise, the pressure on the exposed foundation would have caused some of the buildings to collapse long ago.
  • While I predominantly play cloak and close-quarters, there were some cases where I merely wished to try the different weapons out, and here, made use of the DSG-1 precision rifle to pick off distance CELL soldiers. While the weapon can be suppressed and equipped with a variety of scopes, the default setup is the most optimal for the weapon’s role as a long-range weapon.
  • This whole scene is quite surreal, illustrating the extent that New York’s decayed since the events of Crysis 2. The Typhoon submachine gun can be found in the dam: chambered for 720 specially-shaped pellets, the weapon is absolutely lethal at close quarters and is said to be able to drop even Ceph dropships owing to its rate of fire. Its overwhelming firing rate makes it an excellent weapon to have, and ammunition for it is surprisingly common.
  • After entering the bowels of the facility regulating the Alpha Ceph, Prophet proceeds to destroy the subsystems in the hopes of crippling the CELL system and killing the Alpha Ceph once and for all. However, the plan backfires, as the Alpha Ceph merely becomes awakened and proceeds to coordinate all of the dormant Ceph in the area for a devastating counterattack.
  • After this point, the Ceph become common enemies, and consequently, it’s time to put the Nanosuit upgrades to good use. I decided to improve my regeneration, obtained the sensor upgrade (which makes hacking a lot easier), added deflection and improved my stealth module. I play with a combination of approaches, utilising both stealth and firepower depending on the environment, hence my choice to upgrade a variety of modes.
  • Because the Predator Bow costs zero energy when fired while the Nanosuit is in cloak mode, it is the perfect choice of stealth weapon: in fact, players going for stealthy tactics can make extensive use of the bow and recover the impact arrows off downed enemies. Special bolts (the explosive, airburst and electric bolts can only be resupplied at special containers, and those are relatively rare). Here, Prophet makes his way through Chinatown.
  • The Scorchers wreck havoc with CELL soldiers to the extent where one might feel sorry for CELL: these bug-like machines can be hacked to temporarily stop them, and they drop the Incinerator, a powerful plasma thrower. While killing them conventionally causes them to explode, they can be stunned using electric arrows or by a well-place melee attack in the right spot. The Incinerator is fun to use against Ceph: the weapon produces temperatures matching those in a nuclear fireball and causes the Ceph to explode, but is balanced by a short range.
  • There’s a dormant Ceph pinger that can be hacked for use against other Ceph forces, creating a convenient distraction that would allow Prophet to get to the next location. Ceph weapons become increasingly common, although the most common Ceph weapon, the Pinch Rifle, deals roughly the same damage as the SCAR and is less versatile.
  • In general, I tend not to use the Pinch Rifle or Reaper cannon from destroyed Ceph units, as the human weapons seem more versatile and adaptive, but for situations where destruction is on the recipe of things needed to complete the mission, the X-PAC mortar and Bolt Sniper are fantastic weapons.
  • The Grendel makes a return: it’s a burst fire weapon similar to Halo 2‘s Battle Rifle, and can be customised with a variety of optics barrels and under-barrel attachments. Because all of my special ammo is reserved for the Typhoon, which I’ve decided to carry throughout the entire game, I usually go with the bayonet for the Grendel and grenade launcher for the SCAR.
  • The Resistance is unable to prevent CELL from firing the Archangel orbital weapons platform, although at less than five percent charge, the shot is enough to destroy the remnants of New York. As the game progresses, the environments become increasingly sinister, and this is captured by all of the lighting effects.
  • The fifth mission is characterised by wide, open expanses that necessitate vehicles to traverse, and while a high speed buggy is available, I prefer the superior firepower that the APC offers. This is the closest to a tank that is in Crysis 3 and although not quite as fun as Crysis‘ Onslaught mission, still provided a fantastic opportunity to use the APC’s cannon to wreck the Ceph Devastator, a massive Ceph that resembles Halo‘s Hunters.
  • The Gauss Sabot Rifle is the superior long-ranged weapon compared to the Precision Rifle, taking out any enemy in a single shot (Devastators require two to three well-placed shots), although ammunition is quite rare for it, and one can only hold onto one spare magazine. As a weapon requiring special ammunition, it’s not a good idea to pair it with the Typhoon.
  • The penultimate mission is set in a water-covered wasteland with the remains of skyscrapers dotting the landscape. New York is barely recognisable now, and there’s a despondent feel in the air, reflecting on Claire’s death as Prophet is tasked with destroying the Ceph anti-air batteries.
  • There is a lot of open space in this mission, and overall, compared to Crysis 2Crysis 3 returns to the open-world layout of Crysis, with a few linear spots every so often to set the stage for some spectacular-looking set pieces.
  • It turns out the Gauss Sabot Rifle is powerful enough to destroy an active Pinger with a full magazine’s worth of shots, although Prophet is also able to tag them and allow an immobilised but otherwise fully functional APC to destroy them.
  • The abundance of Ceph in the penultimate mission makes it possible to continuously use Ceph weapons as primary weapons while carrying the Gauss Sabot Rifle and the Typhoon. Here, I make use of the Incinerator to roast another Ceph solider. There are several side missions that can be undertaken here, and I decided to do them just for exploration’s sake.
  • At the crashed VTOL, I find an FY-71M, a previous-generation assault rifle seen on the Lingshan Islands that was used widely by the KPA. While technically a decent weapon, its specifications are otherwise inferior to the weapons available at this point, so there’s little point in holding on to it.
  • The Ceph Mastermind is the second last boss of Crysis 3, and spawns minions from the parts of destroyed Ceph. The best way to defeat this monstrosity is to grab a Ceph battery to super-charge Prophet’s Nanosuit, and hammer it with the X-PAC until it grabs Prophet, during which Prophet can use the Mastermind’s own energy attack against it. I eventually got to the third phase of the boss fight, and was armed with nothing more than the SCAR (I exhausted the Typhoon), but managed to beat it.
  • The last mission is set in a vast underground cavern filled with Ceph, and although Prophet is only armed with a pistol and the Predator bow, a good bit of stealth and precision shooting will allow Prophet to access the more powerful weapons. After interfacing with the Ceph terminals, the Nanosuit becomes supercharged, so in conjunction with the X-PAC, Prophet becomes a death machine.
  • Here, I find the X-43 MIKE, a microwave-based directed-energy weapon that will boil the Ceph alive from inside their armour, eventually causing them to explode in a shower of alien liquids. Because the Crysis 3 incarnation of the MIKE is reloadable and uses special ammunition, it makes a great weapon to have in conjunction with the Typhoon.
  • With the X-PAC, Ceph Batteries to provide supercharge, the MIKE and Typhoon, the Alpha Ceph becomes a boss that isn’t too difficult to best. Once the vulnerable spots are tagged and destroyed, the Alpha Ceph temporarily retreats and sends regular Ceph units to fight Prophet: these can be defeated with the Typhoon (and the Devastators can be wasted using the MIKE). The process is repeated until all three of the claws are destroyed, after which Prophet will finish off the Alpha Ceph with Crysis 3‘s signature weapon.
  • Destroying the Alpha Ceph does not stop the True Ceph from moving through the wormhole, but now empowered to hack into Archangel, Prophet turns the CELL super weapon into an instrument for saving Humanity. Because the True Ceph warship appears to resist a blast capable of incinerating a planet for a brief moment, this moment might hint at just how advanced the True Ceph are. However, the blast eventually destroys the warship and closes off the wormhole.

With a more cohesive story and superior, tactile gameplay compared to all previous installations, Crysis 3 represents the series at its most evolved stage. Each level accommodates for stealthy and aggressive play-styles: the inclusion of the predator bow and hacking means that one can adopt a truly silent approach to every situation, making use of the environment to move from place to place to complete goals. If one should choose an approach befitting of Rambo, this is also possible, as one can customise their Nanosuit to take more damage and improve firearm handling. The incredibly powerful Ceph weapons are now usable, and the presence of Ceph batteries scattered around the maps mean that Prophet has a chance to stand toe-to-toe with even the toughest of Ceph enemies. In particular, the boss fights were absolutely thrilling: at no point did I ever feel that I was ill-equipped to take on the bosses, making use of the environment and weapons to unleash destruction against the enemy. Crysis 3 also does a phenomenal job of portraying the Ceph, giving their true form as entities beyond human comprehension; it turns out that the forces that have been going to down on humanity are their equivalent of Homo Erectus, merely serving as guardians to a world that humans have since damaged. Beyond messages of what it means to be human, Crysis 3 also suggests that humanity should generally be more cautious about how we treat the Earth. All in all, Crysis 3 is perhaps the strongest installment in the franchise, taking back its title as one of the best-looking games of 2013 and also demonstrating that it’s possible to construct a reasonably compelling narrative in a game that might otherwise be seen purely as a technology demonstration.

Crysis 3 continues the storyline of the Prophet. The game takes place in 2047, the scene is similar to the second part — New York. 24 years have passed since the events of the second part. The city was covered with a special «nano-dome», which was divided into seven areas, called «Seven Wonders», and the city turned into a jungle. Under the dome is a quarantine zone that is inhabited by the remnants of the Ceph alien forces, while the zone is patrolled by CELL personnel studying the activities of the Cephs, and they are countered by the Freedom Dome rebels. The prophet, filled with revenge, wants to end both the Cephs and the CELL fighters.

During the game, the Nanosuit, which is even more modified compared to previous games in the series, and weapons corresponding to the year 2047 are used.

One of the popular game genres is graphic novels or visual novels. They have an interesting plot, they do not require a powerful computer and video card. The most famous representative of the genre is the Endless Summer game.

About the game

Everlasting summer is a graphic novel by Soviet Game released in 2013. It has very low system requirements — a Pentium 4 processor and 512 megabytes of RAM.

The game has 13 alternative endings, which are completely dependent on the decisions made during the game. The passage of the base camp at a measured pace takes 12-16 hours. The Endless Flying Guide will help you reach the right endings.

Walkthrough guide

You need to know, starting the passage of Endless Summer — all endings of the game are divided into two types: good and bad. Moreover, both those and others are possible with any girl. Everything is determined by the number of points that the player will score.

Please note! The guide contains many spoilers.

In the game Endless Summer, the walkthrough begins with meeting the main character — Semyon — a homebody programmer. During a bus ride, he falls asleep, and when he opens his eyes, he realizes that he was a pioneer in the Owlet camp. There he meets girls.

Alisa

Alisa Dvachevskaya is a red-haired girl with two ponytails and the main hooligan of the camp. Seeds’ love interest. To get a good ending with her, you need:

  • Day 1 — do not run away from her near the dining room (+1 point).
  • Day 2 — bet that Semyon will win in card competitions, win them (+4 points).
  • Day 3 — after hearing the guitar, go to the sound, because it is Alice playing. She will offer to come see again and not go to the dance, Semyon should support the idea. Come to her in the evening. When the counselor asks who Semyon was with, do not say that he was with Alice (+3 points).
  • Day 4 is an important place. We need to go to the boat station. When Alice gets sick after the dining room, she will come to the first-aid post, you need to give her coal. Thanks to this, it will be possible to search for Shurik with her (+1 point).
  • Day 5 — need to be careful (+1 point). When the hero sees that Lena and Alice are arguing, you need to try to find out what their argument is about. This choice is critical. The rest of the choices during the game are irrelevant.

Important! In the process of searching for Shurik, you will have to go through the labyrinth in the cave. You can do this according to the scheme:

If all choices are made correctly, then the ending will be good: Semyon confesses his feelings to Alice. He will open his eyes in his world, begin to study music. After a while at the concert, he will meet a girl very similar to Alice.

If there is more than one wrong choice, or the player does not try to find out the reason for the dispute, there will be a bad ending: Semyon will not confess his love to Alice and will not see her in reality.

Lena

Lena is a modest thin girl with purple hair, Semyon’s love interest. Both endings with her participation are not like all the others. Moreover, the rest fade against its background. To reach a good ending, you need to make the following choices in time:

  • The first is when you see Lena reading, you need to praise her book (+1).
  • The second is to refuse to argue with Alice about the results of the tournament, to succumb to Lena in a card game and come to the sports ground after the defeat (+2).
  • Third — when Zhenya invites you to breakfast with her, say that you are already having breakfast with Lena. Don’t go look where the guitar sounds come from. Promise to come help in the first-aid post (+2).
  • Fourth — the card does not matter. You need to tell Lena that the skirt and jacket from the magazine will look good on her. Start searching for Shurik together with the girl, but lie to Olga Dmitrievna that he was alone (+2).
  • Fifth — when you need to split up on the island, go with Lena. During her argument with Alice, find out what’s wrong — this choice critically affects the outcome (+1).
  • Sixth — help to Alice (+1).

With the right choices, there will be a good ending with Lena. The rest of the choices in the story are not important.

Good ending: Semyon will explain to Lena that he is from another time, and she will believe him. They will stay in this world, marry and have children. Semyon will write a book about his adventures.

Bad version: the couple will quarrel at the Owlet. Lena will commit suicide. Semyon wakes up in the real world and also opens his veins due to depression.

Ulyana

Please note! The relationship between Semyon and Ulyana is just friendship, there is no love branch with her.

Ulyana is the youngest and most harmful of all the girls in the «Sovenok». She wears a T-shirt with the flag of the USSR. This is a lively girl 12-14 years old. For a good ending with her, you need to choose the following options:

  • Day 1 — try to take the stolen cutlet from her (+1).
  • Day 2 — go to the canteen for lunch. Lose cards to Ulyana and go to the stage after that (+2).
  • Day 3 — when they offer to help in the first-aid post, you need to refer to the counselor’s order. Do not pay attention to the sounds of the guitar, but go to the aid of the sports club. After the pogrom in the dining room, stay with Ulyana (+2).
  • Day 4 — when Ulyana comes to the nurse, ask if she got food poisoning at lunch. Follow Shurik with her (+1).
  • Day 5 — go to the circles and refuse to help get the wire. Do not find out the reason for the dispute between Lena and Alice, instead you can go to the girl (+1).
  • Day 6 — prevent Ulyana with words (+1).
  • Day 7 — when the guys are found together, take all the blame. Critical decision (+2).

If you use two incorrect options, there will be no good ending.

Good ending: Semyon and Ulyana fall asleep on the bus. He opens his eyes already at home. Semyon decides to study at the university again. A year later, he takes a number from a freshman — grown-up Ulyana.

Bad ending: Illyana is left in the camp. Semyon falls asleep on the bus alone, wakes up at home, and does not meet the girl.

Slavya

This is a girl with a long blonde braid. She loves nature and activity: she participates in everything. Seeds’ love interest. To get a good ending with her you need:

  • Day 1 — answer the girl when she tries to start a conversation (+1).
  • Day 2 — go pick up cards from Slavya. Do not argue with Alice about winning the game. After the competition go to the bus stop (+2).
  • Day 3 — do not go to help Lena with medicines, do not go to the sound of music in the square. Thanks to this, it will be possible to help Slava with cleaning. After the mayhem in the dining room, escape (+2).
  • Day 4 — go to house number 17, do not ask the girl unnecessary questions. If you ask, then you can’t follow Shurik with her (+1).
  • Day 5 – on the island for strawberries go with Slavya. To say that I managed it only with the help of the girls. Not getting involved in Alice and Lena’s quarrel and then going looking for the girl is a critical choice (+2).
  • Day 6 — take Slava’s food from the canteen. Tell Olga Dmitrievna that Semyon has no need to justify himself to her (+2).

If several wrong choices are made or a critical one, the ending will be bad.

Good ending: Semyon tells Slava about his real self and offers to return to his world, but the girl does not believe him. They fall asleep on the bus. The main character will wake up in his own world and will live as before. But one fine day he will meet Slavya, invite her to visit, to which she will agree.

Bad ending: Semyon wakes up at home and never meets a girl.

Miku

Important! The love line will open if the story is completed at least once with a good ending.

Miku is the daughter of a Soviet engineer and a Japanese woman. She loves music, has green hair. Seeds’ love interest. For a good ending with her, you need such choices by day:

  • Prologue — say that Semyon wants to stay.
  • On the first evening, you must take the keys to the dining room for yourself.
  • On the second day, go to the mugs for cards on your own.
  • On the fourth day, go to the dance with Miku, do not eat the presented apple, go down after Shurik on your own.

Only these choices are important. The story with Miku has only one ending: Semyon opens his eyes on the site where a film about camp life is being shot. Miku — Masha is his ex-girlfriend. They reunite and fall asleep after a hard day. Opening his eyes, Semyon realizes that he is again in the camp where Slavya disappeared. The counselor goes in search of the girl, and the camp begins to be stormed by squads of zombies and monsters. The main character wakes up and sees Masha on his lap. Everything that happened is the script for their new film.

Julia

Note! The girl appears in the story only after opening all available endings.

Julia is a cat girl who knows nothing about herself, but is related to mystical events. To get the ending with her, you need:

  • In the prologue, answer that Semyon will follow the voice.
  • Do not take the keys to the canteen on the first day.
  • On the third day, don’t help Lena at the nurse’s, don’t go to listen to the guitar. Go help build robots.
  • On the fourth day, eat the presented apple. Go to the mines for Shurik yourself. You can meet Julia there.
  • If you choose to turn back on the fifth day.

Only one ending with Yulia is available: Semyon, the girl and other pioneers go to the camp. Semyon enters the astral and learns the truth: Yulia was sent to watch him and teach him, he opens his eyes, he is already at home. Nearby lies one of the girls of the camp. Which one is up to the player to choose. In a conversation with a voice in his head, Semyon says that he is finally happy.

Requirements for a good ending

In order to complete the Endless Summer only for a good result, you need to use a certain scheme. With each girl, you need to score at least 9 points and make the right choice, marked as «critical» in the guide. If less than 9 points are scored, the ending will be bad.

Note! Miku and Yulia have no division into endings.

Semyon’s passage option

To leave Semyon alone, you need not get close to any of the girls. To do this, you need to score less than 6 points during your stay at Sovenka. On the evening of the fifth day, you do not need to choose any options, but just sit. In this case, in the last days, Semyon will hear a voice that will call him. If you follow the voice, then there will be an exit to a bad ending. If you stay — good.

Good ending: the hero does not follow the voice, opens his eyes at home and continues his normal life.

Bad ending: Semyon meets an unknown creature, talks to him, after which the credits begin. The developers say that in this version he becomes a black pioneer.

Harem Ending

Harem Ending is another hidden ending that can be reached by going through the routes to all endings and reaching Julia. On the fifth day, when the choice will be given, the hero needs to go ahead.

Refusing to return, Semyon goes to the city with the others. He falls asleep and opens his eyes to his world. After a while, matured girls come to him, who also got into the Owlet, but were able to get out by common efforts. Together they decide to release Yulia.

Additional information. This is the only ending where Semyon ends up in the real world.

Mods

Many different add-ons and mods have been released for the game, which expand the game’s story and change the available endings. With the help of mods, you can add another female character to the game — Creepy-chan in a bloodtrain suit.
